Are we too left-brained for our own good? In one of the most powerful conversations ever on The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, John Eldredge unpacks how modern life has stripped us of mystery, beauty, and true refuge. We are being discipled—not by faith, but by the internet—trained to expect instant answers while losing our ability to linger, wonder, and believe. Eldredge shares how our screens shape our souls, why beauty is an essential balm for the weary, and the surprising reason why children instinctively build forts. This episode is an invitation to step away from the digital chaos and rediscover what truly restores. ** Get your copy of Experience Jesus Really here Learn more about John and what he has to offer here ** Download your free 1000 Hours Outside tracker here >> https://www.1000hoursoutside.com/trackers Find everything you need to kick off your 1000 Hours Outside Journey here >> https://www.1000hoursoutside.com/blog/allthethings Order of copy of Ginny's newest book, Until the Streetlights Come On here >> https://amzn.to/3RXjBlN Learn more about your ad choices. We all have our own perspectives that help shape our worldview and how we navigate this life. And sometimes that it okay. But othertimes they can keep us from doing what is of utmost importance, which is letting God have full reign of our lives. We will discuss the potential danger of staying too safe in this life instead of doing whatever necessary to be near the True Refuge of Jesus. Many blessings!

After his wife died, Fred felt he could endure the pain as long as he had his Monday breakfasts with his buddies. His fellow retirees lifted his spirits. Whenever sadness came, Fred would think about the next time he’d enjoy their company again. Their corner table was Fred’s safe place from grief. Over time, however, the gatherings ended. Some friends became ill; others passed away. The emptiness led Fred to seek solace in the God he’d met in his youth. “I have breakfast by myself now,” he says, “but I remember to hold on to the truth that Jesus is with me. And when I leave the diner, I don’t leave to face the rest of my days alone.” Like the psalmist, Fred discovered the safety and comfort of God’s presence: “He is my refuge . . . in whom I trust” (Psalm 91:2). Fred came to know safety not as a physical place to hide, but as the steadfast presence of God we can trust and rest in (v. 1). Both Fred and the psalmist found that they didn’t have to face difficult days alone. We too can be assured of God’s protection and help. When we turn to Him in trust, He promises to respond and be with us (vv. 14-16). Do we have our safe place, a “corner table” we go to when life is hard? It won’t last but God will. He waits for us to go to Him, our true refuge.

Finding True Refuge in This Living Dying World - Part 1 - This week, I began a two-part series inspired by Pema Chödron's newest offering, How We Live is How We Die. In these talks, we'll explore the ways we habitually try to control our lives, and the practices of presence that allow us to cherish this living world and find freedom in the midst of change and loss.

This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens and ButcherBox. Experiencing feelings of grief is a natural part of the human experience. While it can be difficult to sit with hard feelings such as grief, avoiding our emotions only makes them louder. Through practice, we can learn to accept our feelings in the moment. We can work to break the pattern of being at war with the present moment and let our feelings come and go as needed. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Joan Rosenberg, Susan David, and Tara Brach about situations that prompt grief, why facing our emotions is healthier than bottling them up, and how to accept difficult emotions. Dr. Joan Rosenberg is a cutting-edge psychologist who is known as an innovative thinker, acclaimed speaker, and trainer. Reesie Sims was still a college student when she began working with trauma victims at the Ohio State organization It's Abuse. She decided to make it her life's work by moving to Washington D.C. to work at the https://www.rainn.org (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and becoming a licensed therapist before starting her current role at https://www.nvrdc.org/ (Network for Victim Recovery of DC (NVRDC)). On this week's episode of TraumaTies, host Bridgette Stumpf, Executive Director at https://www.nvrdc.org/ (NVRDC), discusses trauma and recovery with Reesie, who serves as the Therapeutic Services Manager at NVRDC. Reesie is responsible for leading support groups for trauma survivors and works individually with crisis and short-term clients. This episode explores the power of therapy, the importance of differentiating between stress and trauma, and the need for more compassion. Featured GuestName: https://www.nvrdc.org/bios/#reesie (Reesie Sims) What she does: As the Therapeutic Services Manager at NVRDC, Reesie is in charge of daily operations and activities for the Therapeutic Services Program. Reesie manages a caseload of crisis and short-term therapy clients, runs support groups for survivors, and gives clients the tools they need to make the best decisions for their own mental health. Company: https://www.nvrdc.org/ (Network for Victim Recovery of DC) Episode Highlights[07:14] Individual realities: Reesie explains that two people might respond to an event very differently because everyone's ability to manage emotional responses is unique, just like any other aspect of their personality. [13:10] Brain function: Traumatic experiences can change the brain, overwhelming its ability to process information, which can cause the traumatic memory to get “stuck” at the forefront of the brain, says Reesie. [18:24] Long-term implications: Reesie affirms that the lasting effects of traumatic experiences can present themselves both psychologically and physically. [22:03] Knowing the signs: Being compassionate with everyone in our daily lives is essential, especially if the person is a trauma survivor. To gauge whether someone is experiencing a past or perceived trauma in the moment, Reesie says to pay attention to body language and focus on “listening to hear and not listening to respond.” [23:34] Stress v. trauma: According to Reesie, stress is more of an immediate response, while the long-term stress of responding to a disturbing event can mutate into trauma. [33:50] Empowerment: Reesie strives to help the survivors she works with feel as empowered as possible. This is partially achieved by creating a safe space to share about their experience if and when they want. [38:34] Book recs: Reesie recommends a few books — “https://www.routledge.com/The-Body-Bears-the-Burden-Trauma-Dissociation-and-Disease/Scaer/p/book/9780415641524 (The Body Bears the Burden),” “https://www.besselvanderkolk.com/resources/the-body-keeps-the-score (The Body Keeps Score),” and “https://www.tarabrach.com/truerefuge/ (True Refuge)” — for people wishing to become more informed about their own trauma or that of a loved one. Finding True Refuge: Pathways of Remembering - This talk explores the three archetypal refuges of awareness (Buddha-nature), truth (Dharma) and love (Sangha) through stories, illustrations and reflections. We end with a Refuge ceremony that can be done by anyone who feels drawn (to participate you will need a 20” red string.) A verse from Ryokan, an eighteenth-century Zen poet, came to mind: “To find the Buddhist law, drift east and west, come and go, entrusting yourself to the waves.”
Tara Brach has been practicing and teaching meditation since 1975, as well as leading workshops and meditation retreats throughout North America and Europe. She has a PhD in clinical psychology, is the founder of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington (IMCW), and is the author of Radical Acceptance, True Refuge, Radical Compassion, and most recently, Trusting the Gold. In this podcast, Tara Brach speaks with Sounds True founder Tami Simon about rediscovering the inner “gold” of our intrinsic goodness, love, and purity. In addition, they discuss Tara's teachings on the “trance of unworthiness” and how we can break free from it; recognizing the secret beauty in others and mirroring it back; relaxation for the go-getters; working with difficult emotions; how shame can become a portal to freedom; the RAIN practice for self-compassion; the power of the phrase “this belongs”; the practice of “softening” in response to contractions of fear or anger; and seeing the sacredness in all things.

How To Practice Radical Acceptance In All Areas Of Life | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, MitoPure, and Athletic GreensIt can be really scary to be alone with ourselves and our thoughts. The stories that keep us suffering can sometimes get louder than ever when we aren't embracing distraction, and we usually try to push them away. But what can help break this pattern is to stop being at war with the moment, just letting our feelings be without buying into the beliefs that come with them. This is one part of the process of radical acceptance, a topic I was excited to dive into today with the one and only Tara Brach. Tara Brach holds a PhD in clinical psychology and teaches meditation internationally. This evening (7/27/21 at YBT) we began our inquiry into the halachos of tikun ha'guf (loosely translated as "bodily posture") in tefilah. After reading the halacha in the Rambam, I shared two quick insights: the first was a technique for maintaining kavanah (which I wrote about in my article entitled, Bodily Posture as a Sensory Anchor for Kavanah in Tefilah) and the second was a possible insight into the general reason for tikun ha'guf. We then read the Rashba's explanation for why we place our feet next to each other and clasp our hands. We ended by taking a quick look at how we paskin.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר אהבה, הלכות תפילה ה:דTara Brach, "True Refuge" pp.31-32Bessel van der Kolk, "The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma," Ch18חידושי הרשב"א על ההגדות - ברכות דף י עמוד אערוך השולחן - אורח חיים צה:ה----------This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Sol and Chummie Azose, in honor of the upcoming 81st birthday of the Rosh ha'Yeshiva, Rabbi Yisroel Chait, and the 91st birthday of Sol's father, Hazzan Isaac Azose.----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! For episode 156 of the Metta Hour Podcast, Sharon speaks with friend and colleague Tara Brach, PhD.Tara has been practicing and teaching meditation since 1975, as well as leading workshops and meditation retreats at centers throughout North America and Europe. She has a PhD in clinical psychology, is the founder of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and is the author of several beloved books: Radical Acceptance, True Refuge, and Radical Compassion. Her most recent book, Trusting the Gold: Uncovering Your Natural Goodness, has just been released by Sounds True in June of 2021.In the conversation, Sharon and Tara speak about the inspiration for Tara's new book, Trusting the Gold, and how it came into form as an illustrated project. They discuss the Buddhist concept of Basic Goodness, and how controversial this idea can be in the West. Tara shares about her early years as a practitioner living in an Ashram, and how she struggled to be a perfect student while slowly opening to the truth of her own basic goodness. They discuss many different aspects of Basic Goodness, from the personal level, relational and communal levels, and how it is even more relevant as an antidote for isolation from the pandemic. Tara shares a breakdown of the practice of RAIN as a tool for when we're triggered, and they both share different tactics for working with the feeling of powerlessness in the pandemic. To close the conversation, Tara leads a seven-minute guided meditation on Basic Goodness.
In this episode, we discuss why awareness is so fundamentally important to your inner safety, freedom, and fulfillment. To join the upcoming retreat, visit www.corymuscara.com/retreat

This week I look at the practice of taking refuge in the Triple Gem, the Buddha, the Dharma, and the sangha. I share ways that we can search for refuge that don't always work, and how the Triple Gem can guide us to a true sense of safety and peace. I reference the book, True Refuge, by Tara Brach

"Our fear is great, but greater yet is the truth of our belonging. And if we can remember to take refuge in that, there is room for fear." - Tara Brach, 2020 Psychotherapy Networker Virtual Symposium Keynote. For more than 30 years, Tara Brach, internationally renowned mindfulness teacher and psychologist, has offered distinctive trainings for therapists that blend the traditions of Eastern meditation and Western clinical practice, integrating both emotional healing and spiritual awakening. Through her bestselling books, including Radical Acceptance and True Refuge, as well as her podcast, which receives over a million and a half downloads each month, her unique voice as a spiritual teacher has enhanced the capacity of people all over the world to bring fuller and more caring attention to issues of violence and hatred, racial injustice, equity and inclusivity, and environmental sustainability. In a culture of contempt that continuously reinforces our evolutionary tendency to create bad others, she’s dedicated her life to showing how deliberate training and practice can provide a pathway toward greater compassion and awareness. She can be found at TaraBrach.com. In this address, she’ll explore how the weave of mindfulness and compassion can undo our primitive, fear-based reactivity, reveal our mutual belonging, and awaken our hearts. This talk was originally delivered live at the 2020 Virtual Psychotherapy Networker Symposium. Registration for next year's Symposium, the most celebrated gathering of therapists in the world, is now open. One-fourth of the earth will be affected by the grim reapers - the four horsemen of the Apocalypse (Revelation 6:1-8). This lesson on 6:9-17 is broken into two halves: I. True Refuge in the Rock (verses 9 to 11) and II. False Refuge in the Rocks (verses 12-17). The true refuge is about slain Tribulation saints in Heaven and their response to the first four seal judgments: prayer. The false refuge is by the ungodly on earth and their response to the first four seal judgments: fear.
From this videoconference talk from 13 March 2020, Ajahn Anan discusses metta and giving, what our true refuge is, and the Covid-19 virus. An excerpt: "May you take refuge in the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha as the highest refuge in our hearts, as our highest jewel and highest wealth. It is a noble wealth in our hearts. Each of us that has metta and self-sacrifice, then spread this heart of metta to ourselves and to all living beings, to all the people in the world. May all beings be free from dangers, and free from sickness." Hebrews 6:13-20 - For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, "I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU." 15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. 19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. **1) Is Christ enough?** Heb 6:13-16 - For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, "I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU." 15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. Heb 11:17-19 - By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; 18 it was he to whom it was said, "IN ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS SHALL BE CALLED." 19 He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type. Rev 22:13 - "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." b. He cannot change his promise Num 23:19 - "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Rom 8:32 - He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 2 Cor 1:20 - For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us. **3) Two implications** Heb 6:18 - so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. a. We can take refuge in Him Ps 46:1-3 1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; 3 Though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. (Gary Valenciano—Warrior is a Child, sung by Twila Parris) Lately I've been winning battles left to right But even winners can get wounded in the fight People say that I'm amazing I'm strong beyond my years But they don't see inside of me I'm hiding all the tears [Chorus] They don't know That I come running home when I fall down They don't know Who picks me up when no one is around I drop my sword and cry for just a while Cuz deep inside this armor The warrior is a child Unafraid because his armor is the best But even soldiers need a quiet place to rest People say that I'm amazing I never face retreat But they don't see the enemies That lay me at his feet [Chorus] They don't know That I come running home when I fall down They don't know Who picks me up when no one is around I drop my sword and cry for just a while Cuz deep inside this armor The warrior is a child Matt 12:20-21 20 "A BATTERED REED HE WILL NOT BREAK OFF, AND A SMOLDERING WICK HE WILL NOT PUT OUT, UNTIL HE LEADS JUSTICE TO VICTORY. 21 "AND IN HIS NAME THE GENTILES WILL HOPE." b. We can take hold of the hope set before us. Hab 3:17-18 - Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls, 18 Yet I will exult in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' name. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand. When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil. His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.

Finally, they talk about the need for mental health professionals to understand contemplative practices such as mindfulness. (56 minutes)

Awareness can be understood as an objective state of mind that simply knows things as they are. Ajahn Viradhammo stresses how to recognize, in our day to day life, that our experiences (of pleasure, pain, various moods) are constantly changing. But if we look deeper at the awareness behind it all, we can see that awareness is unchanging. It becomes a center grounding point, a true refuge. (Talk recorded at Tisarana on 1 September 2018. “Trust your capacity to change” - Tara Brach Interview I am thrilled and honored to share with you an interview I did with my absolute idol, Tara Brach. If you don’t know who Tara Brach is, let me introduce to you an amazing and inspirational human. Tara Brach is a leading Western teacher of Buddhist Meditation, emotional healing and spiritual awakening. Tara is a Clinical Psychologist, meditation teacher and Author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge, two of my favorite books. In addition, Tara Brach, along side Jack Kornfield, co-founded the Awareness Training Institute (ATI) and the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP). For me, Tara’s podcast (tarabrach.com) was (and is) one of the most important parts of my own personal development and growth. For hours I would (and still do) walk the neighborhood while listening to her podcast. Tara helped me through some of the hardest times in my life and allowed me to access her tools and wisdom through a freely offered podcast and streaming service that inspired me to create CBTschool.com. Tara taught me to be a fearless mental health advocate, so you may see that much of CBT School follows her goal of offering skillful and generous work. While I was in Washington, DC for the International OCD Foundation conference, I was lucky enough to meet with Tara in person before her Wednesdays with Tara Meditation Talk and ask her some questions about anxiety and mindfulness. I am still freaking out with excitement that I had the opportunity to meet her in person and then get to interview her for the Your Anxiety Toolkit Podcast. My goal for this podcast episode was to zero in to the questions I often get asked and see what Tara’s response would be. True to form, Tara gives us some BEAUTIFUL responses that are easy to understand and apply. In this interview, we talk specifically about how uncertainty can be one of the hardest and most challenging parts of anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic attacks and depression. Tara gives some amazing mindfulness tools to help us approach uncertainty. We also talked about her book, Radical Acceptance and what some of the road blocks are to radically accepting our discomforts or fears. If you haven’t read her books, I strongly encourage you to. Tara has a way of bringing compassion into the room, even if she isn’t physically there. Tara gives us tips on how to implement Mindfulness practices into our everyday life and normalizes the struggles we all have with this. One of the questions I was most interested in asking Tara was her advice for those who are deeply suffering with mental health right now. She so beautifully responded with compassion and deep knowledge of mindfulness practice. This answer brought me to tears and I am so grateful for having this experience with her. And, last of all, I just had to ask Tara about why she uses humor in her meditation talks and Tara kindly shared with us one of her favorite jokes. Tara used humor a lot to help us understand our own reactivity or idiosyncrasies and I just loved having a little chuckle with her. So, as you can see, I am just a teeny bit in love with Tara (wink, wink). I really hope you get as much as I did out of this episode. Thank you so much Tara for your kindness and generosity. Ok folks! DO NOT FORGET to stay til the end of the episode because Tara so kindly gives an AMAZING GIFT at the end of the interview for our wonderful CBT School community.
050703AM Hebrews 6:18-20 COR-05 For centuries an archaic Old Testament system of justice laid in the dust of the past. Then Jesus stepped onto the planet. The One who was promised arrived, and the True Refuge that these temporal, insufficient refuges has heralded was visible and available. In the Old Testament a fearful fleeing Jew [...] The post Christ – Refuge for the Unclean appeared first on Discover the Book Ministries.

Suzanne Scurlock-Durana is the author of Reclaiming Your Body and Full Body Presence. She is one of the world’s leading authorities on conscious awareness and its transformational impact on the healing process. Her Healing from the Core curriculum combined with CranioSacral therapy and other bodywork modalities creates a complete, body-centered guide to awareness, healing, and joy. Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge, has this to say about Suzanne’s book: “A master teacher and healer, Suzanne Scurlock-Durana draws on her decades of work facilitating profound transformation in people suffering from a range of physical and emotional dis-ease. The result is a brilliant and compelling guide to the deepest freedom — living from awake, vibrant, loving presence.” Reclaiming Your Body empowers readers to reconnect with their body’s inherent guidance system. The book explains how unresolved trauma becomes lodged in our bodies, blocking the ability of its communication system to share its wisdom and strategies. This can cause us to flounder when making decisions, remain in less-than-ideal or unsafe situations, and/or end up living a life that truly isn’t ours — while the whole time our body is madly signaling us with the answers and solutions we seek. Suzanne, who has spent thirty years studying the gifts of the body and teaching thousands how to reclaim them, sets the stage for experiencing full body presence by offering ways to experience direct sensation, since developing this skill is necessary to be able to hear the body’s messages.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
