We study one of the greatest military commanders of all time. The son of an artillery general, he was adopted by General Georg von Manstein after the untimely death of his parents. Manstein began his active career as an officer in 1906 and served in World War I on both the Western and Russian fronts. Rising through the ranks, he was promoted to major general in 1936 and to lieutenant general in 1938. At the start of World War II, he served as chief of staff to General Gerd von Rundstedt in the invasion of Poland (1939). Manstein had in the meantime devised a daring plan to invade France by means of a concentrated armoured thrust through the Ardennes Forest. Though this plan was rejected by the German High Command, Manstein managed to bring it to the personal attention of Adolf Hitler, who enthusiastically adopted it. After leading an infantry corps in the assault on France in June 1940, Manstein was promoted to general that month. He commanded the 56th Panzer Corps in the invasion of the Soviet Union (1941), and nearly captured Leningrad. Promoted to command of the 11th Army on the southern front (September 1941), Manstein managed to take 430,000 Soviet prisoners, after which he withstood the Soviet counteroffensive that winter and went on to capture Sevastopol in July 1942. Soon after, he was promoted to field marshal. He almost succeeded in relieving the beleaguered 6th Army in Stalingrad in December 1942–January 1943, and in February 1943 his forces recaptured Kharkov, in the most successful German counteroffensive of the war. Thereafter he was driven into retreat, and in March 1944 he was dismissed by Hitler. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-kaires/support
The struggle by the Sixth Army to take the remnants of the Russian 62nd Army clinging onto the banks of the Volga river is about to take another turn with General Paulus ordering a further assault starting the 11th November. This followed the German High Command's realization that they had to do something urgently to beef up Paulus' exposed flanks. The German's had formed a salient or wedge as they pushed towards Stalingrad and it was ripe for the plucking. The 48th Panzer Corps had been based 50 miles south west of the ominous bridgeheads at Kletskaya and Serafimovich on the Don River when it's commander Lieutenant General Ferdinand Heim received orders to move up to the threatened sector. That was to the North East and the unit duly clanked onto the road. But only a few miles after starting out major problems emerged and it involved mice. The column had ground to a halt and some of the tanks actually caught fire. In others, their engines were misfiring and many then failed to run at all. Mechanics swarmed over the vehicles and discovered that field mice had nested inside the vehicles and gnawed away at the insulation covering the electrical systems. It was days later that they limped on the way again eventually the 48th arrived at its new quarters. But it was virtually crippled. Out of 104 tanks in the 22nd Panzer Division for example, only 42 were ready for combat. And no-one notified the high command or Hitler – he would have had a fit. So on the 11th with their flank bolstered, the Germans attacked. I began just before dawn led by newly organized battle groups from the 71st, 79th, 100th, 295th, 305th and 389th infantry divisions, reinforced with four fresh pioneer of specialist engineers. They were aiming to dislodge the pockets of resistance or as the German's put it – the rectangles. And above, Freihrer von Richthofen's Luftwaffe prepared the way. The general had lost almost all patience with what he regarded as army conventionality – or in another word – slowness. He had complained repeatedly about the artillery failing to fire and the infantry not making use of bombing attacks. It was easy for him to say, his men were all hundreds of feet above Stalingrad – hardly feeling the pain of the most dramatic battle in history. The Russians had a big plan of their own, Operation Uranus. Stalin thought it was a bad plan initially – but soon realized that a large scale gamble was far better than piecemeal offensives. They'd tried the latter repeatedly and it had failed repeatedly. And of course, his great military advantage over Adolf Hitler was his lack of ideological shame. He was not embarrassed in the slightest to reinstate the military thinking of the 30's he'd had Soviet officers executed for even suggesting some of the methods he was now signing off.

The Historical Gamer (Matt) and the Strategy Wargamer (Jean) return to talk about Slitherine's newest title, March to Glory and an upcoming game (Panzer Corps 2) as well as Jeans usual tangent on mobile gaming and the future of Wargaming on Mobile.
In the beginning, there was Panzer General and it was good. Soon after that came Panzer General 2 and it was even better. After that was another game we don't talk about. Fast forward a decade or so to Panzer Corps and things were back to good, unless you asked Troy, and some time after that we reach this week's topic of Panzer Boat. Rob, Tom, Bruce, and Troy "HMCS Uganda" Goodfellow get together to talk about Order of Battle: Pacific, a game that superficially shares a lineage with the venerable Panzer Corps and other Slitherine games. Rob and Troy took a shine to it while Tom and Bruce decide that they've sung this song, danced this dance, and sunk that carrier before. Hello Kitty is invoked, JRPGs are explained, and the Pacific Theater in general is likened to Warhammer 40K.
Klei's Nels Anderson and Firaxis' Scott Lewis join Rob and Troy to talk about fog of war and hidden information in game design. They talk about Mark of the Ninja and how information-gathering becomes a key game phase, and how games like Civilization use fog of war as a way to keep the player focused on a small, manageable area at the start of the game. The group discuss other ways to represent information-gathering, touching on games like Wargame, XCOM, Panzer Corps, and even 2006's Chromehounds. Apologies for any audio issues. We lost Scott Lewis's audio track to a software glitch.
Rob and Troy talk about 2x2's new entry-level wargame, Unity of Command, and why it is such a huge success. How does it stack up against Panzer Corps, and why is it more a wargame than a puzzle game? Why is its treatment of supply so important? Can you make a really challenging wargame without implying puzzle-like solutions?
Freelance writer Phill Cameron joins Rob and Troy for a discussion of the games they've been playing that haven't quite fit into recent writings or podcasts. New Men of War DLC, Troy and Rob's changing views on Panzer Corps, RTS time-traveler Achron, high-level Blood Bowl, Out of the Park 11, and racing games all come up for discussion in this open-ended discussion.
GWJ's Cory Banks finally dips his toes in the waters of turn-based wargaming with Matrix / Slitherine's new Panzer General remake, Panzer Corps. He joins Julian and Rob to talk about wargaming-lite, whether this really improves on Panzer General, and Panzer Corps' puzzle-based approach to scenario design. Rob realizes a newfound appreciation for daunting complexity.
