In this message, we continue to study Jesus' last words from the cross, this time focusing in on His conversation with the criminal on the cross next to Him. A man that had previously mocked Jesus, had never read the Bible, gone to church, been baptized, or done any of the other religious 'works' we often think are necessary to be right with God. However, Jesus told this man that he would be with him in paradise that day, not because of this man had done, but because of Jesus did for him.
In this sermon we continue our series looking at the seven things Jesus says from the cross before he dies. We consider a passage from Wendell Berry's book Jayber Crow, how people used to keep memory, what's been lost of memory in the modern world, how that affects us, a poem by Mary Oliver who gives us an image of God's lively memory, and what it means to be remembered by God.
Today we will reflect on Luke 23:39-43; Romans 8:1-4; 33-39, Today You Will be With Me in Paradise. The thief on the cross asks Jesus to remember him. There is no fear quite like the fear of being forgotten. The beauty of Jesus is that he doesn't forget us and because he doesn't forget us, we have salvation, a place with Jesus, even after death. The Bible gives us different images of what Paradise is like, the one thing that connects them all is that this is where we find Jesus and that even after death we will be with Jesus. As Paul writes, “nothing can separate us from the love of Christ,” not even death !

Ever just pass a test? Or how about just qualifying for a tournament? Just getting the project done right before deadline? Well that last one, we here at Thrive might know a thing or two about. Jesus was not alone on that hill, and not the only one being crucified that day. One was a thief, who should that he believed that Jesus was the way, and Jesus replied, "Today you will be with me in paradise." His faith saved him, he passed the test. But barely. Death Cannot Hold Him focused on the Lord Jesus' victory over hell and death as laid out in Peter's sermon on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2:22-28. Peter quotes from Psalm 16:10, and we explored the question: Did Jesus descend into hell?We discovered that Jesus descended into Sheol, שְׁאוֹל/Hades, ᾅδης, which contained both the righteous and unrighteous dead, as can be demonstrated in Jesus' parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:22-25). The righteous dead did not suffer in this place, that is also called Paradise (Luke 23:42-43). The unrighteous dead suffered there without their bodies, awaiting their bodies and to be cast into the Lake of Fire, Gehenna (géenna, γέεννα), the Valley of the sons of Hinnom (גֵּ֣י בֶן־הִנֹּ֔ם) that became the garbage dump of Jerusalem in the time Jesus. Jesus used Gehenna to describe eternal hell (Mark 9:42-48), a place of unending torment for both body and soul (Revelation 14:9-11).The Lord Jesus did not descend into Gehenna.
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34).“You will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).“Woman, behold your son! ” (John 19:26-27).“Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46).“I am thirsty!” (John 19:28).“It is finished!” (John 19:30).“Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit'” (Luke 23:46).
Jesus told the repentant thief that he was forgiven and would be with Him in paradise, as Pastor Cameron describes today. Even on the cross, Jesus offered forgiveness to others!

This is the message from our Sunday morning service on 7/10/2022 titled "Today You Will be with Me in Paradise" on Luke 23:43 with Pastor Jeff Gill.
A divine pardon removes you from the penalty of going to hell. It is available to you, to all mankind, based on the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Simply “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Jesus Christ granted a divine pardon to a criminal being crucified next to Him on the cross who recognized He was his Lord and Savior. Our Lord told this criminal, “Assuredly I say unto you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). It is at this point Christ granted a divine pardon. The criminal had simply believed in the true identity of the Savior. 1 John 5:1 verifies this fact, “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.” Click for Full Transcript: https://rhem.pub/divine-pardon-cb7ec1 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rick-hughes/message
Teachings from Pastor John Mottley at a joint Good Friday service with Trinity United Methodist Church and Messiah Lutheran Church 4/15/22. Recorded at Trinity United Methodist Church First Teaching: "Today you will be with me in Paradise" Luke 23:43 Second Teaching: "It is Finished" John 19:30
Luke 23:39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don't you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
“And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched him there…” Today is Good Friday! It is the day that we remember the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ on an old rugged cross just outside the city walls of Jerusalem. For our Pastor's Chat today, we want to take a break from Revelation 7 and meditate for a few minutes on the Seven Sayings of Jesus on the Cross. All four Gospels record the death of Jesus. When you look at four of them together you find that Jesus made at least seven different sayings as He was dying. Matthew tells us that when they crucified Jesus, that “they sit down and watched Him there.” We want to take a few minutes to listen to Him as He makes these final statements. According to the commonly accepted timetable, our Lord was placed on the cross on an April Friday at 9 a.m. Here he suffered for some six hours and gave up his spirit at 3:00 in the afternoon. Surely these were the most important six hours of all human history. The first saying: "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). Most Bible students would accept the word "forgive" at face value and interpret his prayer as a request for God not to add this horrible crime of regicide (the killing of one's own king) to the personal accounts of those individuals who killed him. Peter and Paul would amplify on this in later sermons (Acts 3:14, 15, 17): The second saying: "Verily, I say to you, today shall you be with me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43). Two thieves were crucified with him but only one repented of his terrible deeds and ask for Jesus to remember him in His Kingdom. Because of his repentance and faith, Jesus assured him that he would be with Him later that day in heaven. The third saying: "Woman, behold thy Son! Behold thy mother!" (John 19:26, 27). Even on the cross in terrible suffering, Jesus is thinking of His mother Mary and her future care. He asked His disciple John to take care of her. The fourth saying: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46). I believe this saying happened at 12:00 noon when the sun went dark and refused to shine for the next three hours. God turned His back on His own Son as Jesus took the full weight of our sins upon Himself. “He was made sin Who knew no sin” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The fifth saying: "I Thirst" (John 19:28). This saying fulfilled the great Messianic prophecy in Psalm 22:15. The sixth saying: "It is finished" (John 19:30). The sixth statement of Jesus is actually one word in the original Greek. It is tetelestai, meaning, "It was finished, and as a result it is forever done." Jesus was proclaiming that the eternal work of salvation for mankind was forever finished. Jesus paid the complete price for our redemption to satisfy the law of the penalty of death for sin (Romans 6:23). Jesus suffered our hell for us as the eternal wrath of God was poured out on Him as He bore our sins! “Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24) The seventh saying: "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit" (Luke 23:46). The Roman soldiers did not kill Jesus. The Jews did not kill Jesus. Jesus voluntarily laid down His life for my sins and your sins! He chose the exact moment that He would die as our substitute in our place. “… I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again…” (John 10:17-18). Hallelujah!!!! What a Savior!!!

Luke 23:39-43 - - Mar 26, 2017
There is a reality of Hell and there is a reality of Heaven. Is Heaven too good to be true? Have you lost your hope? Have you lost the JOY of your SALVATION? Pastor Vlad shares a powerful message of the hope that we have in Heaven - this sermon will encourage you and will give you fresh insight on what awaits us as believers. Rejoice in the Lord always! Notes: Everyone wants to go to heaven but no one wants to die! 1. THERE IS MORE THAN ONE HEAVEN! God is the Creator of the heavens. The first heaven is our atmosphere. The second heaven is the invisible realm, where demons and angels are at. The third heaven is where God lives. Heaven is called: - The Father's house (John 14:2) - A city designed and built by God (Hebrews 11:10) - A better country (Hebrews 11:16) - Paradise (Luke 23:43) 2. HEAVEN IS OUR FUTURE HOME AND OUR PRESENT HOPE. God commands us to be heavenly minded (Philippians 3:19; Colossians 3:2) 3. WHERE CHRISTIANS GO WHEN THEY DIE IT'S NOT WHERE THEY WILL SPEND ETERNITY! Revelation 21:1,2 What will not be in heaven: 1. No tears. 2. No pain. 3. No cemetery. 4. No hospitals. 5. No police. 6. No locks or alarms. 7. No jail. 8. No orphanages. 4. HEAVEN IS AN UNKNOWN REGION WITH A WELL-KNOWN INHABITANT. Revelation 21:3 “My knowledge of that life is small, the eye of faith is dim, but it's enough that Christ knows all, and I shall be with him.” Richard Baxter 5. THIS WORLD IS NOT YOUR HOME, IT'S YOUR HOTEL! Life is as fast as wind, as temporal as grass, as lasting as flower, as passing as shadow, vanishes as vapor), death as water spilled. To gain this life is to lose it. This world is not our home, we are just passing through! HEAVEN IS A PREPARED PLACE FOR A PREPARED PEOPLE.
In today’s Sunday morning episode, you can discover what Easter means to you. Listen for a hope-filled gospel message from Pastor Greg Laurie from Luke 23 and John 20. Because of Easter, we have all God's promises! Notes Easter is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34) Forgiven people should be forgiving people. “The first to apologize is the bravest, the first to forgive is the strongest, and the first to forget is the happiest.” “Truly, truly I say to you today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). “Woman, behold your son.” “Son, behold your mother” (John 19:26). “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Mark 15:33–34). At the cross, even God the Father turned His face away from God the Son; because God, in all His holiness could not look at sin. Jesus entered the darkness that we might walk in the light. “I thirst!” “It is finished!” or “Tetelestai!” “Into Your hands I commit My spirit” (Luke 23:46). On the cross, Jesus addressed the Father at the beginning, middle, and end. We should do the same in life. 1. The resurrection of Jesus assures me that I am accepted by God. “On the cross, God treated Jesus as if he had lived your life, so that He could treat you as if you had lived His life.” 2. The resurrection of Jesus assures me that I have all the power I need to live the Christian life. 3. The resurrection of Jesus assures me that I too will live forever in Heaven. At the cross, Jesus took the stinger out of death. 4. The resurrection of Jesus assures me that I will receive a new body just like His. These are all promises for the Christian. Yours in Christ: Pastoral Letters from Resurrection, State College
Welcome to Yours in Christ, Pastoral Letters from Resurrection in State College, Pennsylvania. I'm Pastor Zach Simmons, and this is letter number 10, “Today, You Will Be with Me in Paradise,” the second in a series of five letters about Jesus' words from the cross. For more, visit resurrectionopc.org/letters. Dear Resurrection, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). Jesus spoke these words from the cross to one of the two criminals who were crucified with him. One of them had started railing at Jesus, saying that if He really was the Christ, He should save himself and the two of them. The other criminal admitted that he had been justly condemned, that he was receiving what his crimes deserved, but that for Jesus it was different—Jesus had done nothing wrong. Then he turned to Jesus and said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus' reply tells us five very important things. First, it tells us that there is life after death. Death is not the end of anyone's conscious existence. Death rends the soul from the body, but your soul will then experience immediately either the glory of Christ's gracious presence or the torment of His just judgment. What Jesus promised this man is inconsistent, for example, with the Adventist doctrine of “soul sleep”; “today,” Jesus said, “you will be with me in Paradise.” Second, this episode illustrates what makes the difference in this life between a future in heaven or hell. It's the same for you as for those two criminals: your attitude towards Christ. The first criminal was selfish, arrogant, and defiant. The second was humble, trusting, and repentant. And humble, trusting repentance is what Jesus still is looking for today. Third, Jesus' promise tells us that there is hope for the worst of sinners. The sin of the repenting criminal did not disqualify him from the grace of Jesus. Jesus underwent the most debasing kind of death alongside the most contemptible of felons so that no sinner might ever be driven to despair, thinking, “My sin is too bad or too big for Jesus to forgive.” The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day and there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away. (William Cowper, “There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood,” TPH #340) Fourth, Jesus' reply tells us that on the cross, Jesus' heart was tender toward sinners—ready to forgive, ready to receive, ready to welcome sinners to join with Him in the glory He was about to enjoy. Jesus' suffering did not embitter Him towards sinners like that man. It did not embitter Him towards you. It only deepened His love for you. Finally, this scene reminds us the best part of heaven is being with Jesus. The best part of the promise Jesus gave that man was not that “today you will be in paradise,” but that “today you will be with me.” Grace-Based Action Point Sometimes people use the story of the thief on the cross as an excuse to put off trusting in Christ. You must never do that. Death comes suddenly, and if you're counting on getting serious about turning to Christ later, you almost certainly never will. Today is not too late for you, but tomorrow may be. Now is the time to humble yourself in trusting repentance, and embrace in faith the hope that for those who die in Christ, death is the gateway to being “with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). Yours in Christ, Pastor Simmons
God the Holy Spirit works only through "The Office of the Keys" to apply the salvation that Christ won for us on Calvary to us sinners here in time. He works through the "Means of Grace" - Baptism, Confession, Office of the Keys, and the Sacrament of the Altar to bring, strengthen, and keep us in His Word and faith until we die. Sermon series: "Cross+Connections" based on Luke 23:39-43 - "What is the Office of the Keys?" preached for the 3rd midweek Lenten Service, 10-March-2021 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Tell City, Indiana by Rev. In Christ, we have rock-solid, death-defying confidence that when we breathe our last in this life, we will be with Him in paradise.
Happy Easter from Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church! He is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!
On Good Friday, the Rev. Nick Lannon preaches a sermon on Jesus' comforting words to the thief on the cross: "Today, you will be with me in paradise." What Good News this is to those of us who, like that thief, are justly accused.
"YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE Mar 31 Today we read of Jesus on the Cross. “The chief priests and the rulers and the people” [Luke 23 v.13] opposed Pilate’s decision to release him so he gave in and “delivered Jesus over to their will.” He is crucified between two criminals and one of these derides him saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us,” but the other rebukes him and says, “we are receiving the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong” [v.39,41] Then he makes a request to Jesus which, together with Jesus’ answer, is widely misunderstood. He says, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom’. And Jesus says to him, ‘Truly I say to you today, you will be with me in paradise.’ “[v.42,43] We have quoted exactly as in the Bible (ESV) with one little exception, we have put the comma afterthe word ‘today’ instead of before it. The original Greek has no punctuation so translators use their own judgement as to how to punctuate the text when rendering it in English – or any other language - and nearly all of them get it wrong in this verse. The question the criminal asked indicates he knew the teachings of Jesus but had turned to bad ways: maybe he learnt the prayer Jesus taught, ”Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth …” [Matt.6 v.10].The word ‘paradise’ means a garden, a park – the Garden of Eden was a paradise. The whole world will become the Garden of Eden when Jesus sets up God’s kingdom’. Jesus promised, “to the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” [Rev. 2 v,7]. It is obvious that Jesus is not referring to heaven when he made this promise. After he came out of the tomb he said to Mary Magdalene, “I have not yet ascended to the Father” [John 20 v.17]. The criminal re-established his relationship with Jesus because of his faith – and for that reason he received this promise of a place in the paradise of God’s kingdom. He had remarkable faith in the future that awaited Jesus when the disciples had lost theirs! A closing thought is to note the mistake some make in saying that since this repentant criminal was not baptised – baptism is not essential. They forget that baptism is a symbol of the death and resurrection of Jesus as Paul makes plain in Romans 6 v. 3-8. Baptism became essential after the resurrection of Jesus. Those who only knew the baptism of John had to be rebaptised (see Acts 19 v.3-5) The whole world is to become a paradise! What wonders await all who will be with Jesus then! Will you be with him in paradise?.

March 24, 2019. The Point Church, Perdido Key, FL. Pastor Tim continuesa sermon series, Last Words, that will lead us towards Easter.
This week Dr. Steven Paulson joins the podcast to talk about Jesus on the cross in Luke 23: 33-43. Some of the things we talk about include:How Martin Luther talks about this passage including how we need to hear the harshness that our sin put Jesus on the cross. Everyone was doing their jobs resulting in Jesus' crucifixion. The Roman soldiers. The Jewish authorities. Even the disciples running away. The criminal next to Jesus asking him to save yourself and him. Luke 23:33-43 33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide his clothing. (Isaiah 53:12) 35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!" 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" 38 There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." 39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong." 42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." 43 He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise." "Have you ever wondered when can death be a good thing? Have you ever wondered when a funeral can be really and truly a celebration for real?" Family Discussion: What does it mean to you that that thief heard those words from Jesus the savior? Transcription: 00:13 Have you ever wondered when can death be a good thing? Have you ever wondered when a funeral can be really and truly a celebration for real? Well, today's passage will help you understand that. It's in Luke chapter 23 verse 43 and if you've ever lost a loved one, or if there's someone in your life now that you love a lot, who you feel like is on the brink of death, hopefully today's devotional will be comforting to you as it is to me. Jesus is on the cross. There's a thief beside him and the thief sees Jesus and he recognizes who he is. And he puts this tiny seed of faith in the heart of the only one that can save him. And the thief says, Jesus, will you remember me when you come into your kingdom? And Luke 23:43 says, "and Jesus said to him, truly, truly, I say to you today, you shall be with me in paradise." 01:08 You know, I watched my daddy die and I watched my daddy go to heaven and I hated to see my daddy die. But Oh, how that man wanted to be with Jesus. It was time for him to go. One of our great counselors here at Kanakuk worked at a wilderness kamp we have called K-Wet on the edge of the Lake where kids go out and they camp out for a night or two and do wakeboarding and barefoot skiing and doing fun things with sailboats. But this guy had a granddad who loved Jesus. I mean, he'd love Jesus with everything that was with him. And on his death bed in the hospital, the granddad had a chair next to his bed and people would come to visit the granddad all the time, but they couldn't sit in that chair because in a very kind, polite way, he would say, please don't sit there. That's where Jesus is sitting. And one night, the family was out of the room getting something to eat. And when they came back in, the man was dead, but his head wouldn't laying on the pillow where he'd been laying for several weeks. His head was laying in the chair. His head was laying in Jesus's lap. Be assured, if you have faith in Jesus, that's where your head will lay. And that's where you'll breathe your last breath. It won't be on a pillow, it won't be in a chair, but your head will be in Jesus's lap because just as it was to the thief, when you place the tiny seed of faith that you have, and if you're like me, sometimes you feel like that's all you have to offer. But he says, if you place that tiny seed of faith in him that to be absent from the body, scripture says, we'll be present with the Lord. That you'll only blink your eyes one time and you'll open your eyes again and the presence of God. 02:53 And so let me ask you this, as you feel some days as I do, like you're the thief on the cross with nothing to offer at all. What does it mean to you that that thief heard those words from Jesus the savior? When he put his faith in him today, you shall be with me in paradise. You're my son now after this ordeals over today on this cross. You're going home with me now. Take that truth and go hug somebody today.
We cannot stand before God in and of ourselves, but we rejoice that we have been saved completely by Jesus and His finished work.
Series: The Extent of Grace Date: April 7, 2019 About this series Our series in Luke will take us through the end of 2018 and well into 2019 as we look at the many parables, teachings, miracles, and events that are recorded only in Luke's gospel. In these passages, we'll find that Luke brings to light again and again the fact that Jesus was spending time with outcasts. Luke makes sure we know that Christ's gospel message and miraculous deeds extended to the poor, the broken, the prostitutes, the tax-collectors, women, children, and Gentiles. Walking through this book we'll behold and be reminded of the extent of God's glorious grace! About Stonehouse Church We are Christ followers devoted to making much of Jesus and welcoming all into true community as we extend the love of God to a broken world. No matter who you are or where you've been you are welcome here with your faith, your fears, your doubts, and your questions. As a church we want nothing more than to repeat the call of Jesus for all to come and know him. The reason we want to go the 2nd mile in our lives is because Jesus went the 2nd mile in his death. It's time to consider how Jesus went the 2nd mile to secure our forgiveness. 7 Quotes from the Cross "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). "This day you will be with me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43). "Woman, behold your son" (John 19:26-27). "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Mark 15:34; Matt. 27:46). "I thirst" (John 19:28). "It is finished" (John 19:30). "Into your hands I commit my spirit" (Luke 23:46).
St. Dismas is the good thief who hung next to Christ during the crucifixion, and in my opinion, there’s no better saint to think about in times of suffering. In the middle of Dismas’ agony, he recognizes Jesus as his savior, and asks to enter the kingdom of heaven alongside him, and Christ himself canonizes him as a saint when he says, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). We can follow St. Dismas’ example and invite Jesus into our suffering, not to ease the pain, but to find meaning by uniting it to the cross of Christ. Snippet from the Show “No matter what your suffering is, you can take a cue from St. Dismas, and as you hang on your cross, know you do not hang alone. Christ is right there next to you.” “One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, ‘Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!’ But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingly power.’ And he said to him, ‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise”’ (Luke 23:39-43).
The gospel is good news about a change in government for the whole world. In other words, the gospel is about a kingdom. But that is not how I thought of it for many years. I used to think that the gospel was about avoiding Hell and gaining Paradise, but I have since discovered that Jesus did NOT come to show us the way to heaven. Jesus came to bring heaven to earth. In this week's podcast, I am going to be taking a closer look at Jesus' last conversation with a brigand about "paradise" and the Kingdom of God in Luke 23. In the second part of our podcast, we will be sharing the testimony of Bobby Morrison who was an addict to drugs and alcohol from the age of 15. Bobby struggled unsuccessfully to be free of his addictions until God touched him through the ministry of a humble pastor. This is the story of how Jesus set Bobby free.Contact:https://www.karlgessler.com/contactShow Your Love!
