Your Body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit – Lesson 13 (1 Corinthians 6:12-20)In today's teaching, we examine Paul's exhortation in 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, where he warns against abusing Christian freedom and engaging in immorality. While we are justified by faith, we are still called to live righteously and honor God with our bodies. Paul reminds believers that their bodies are not their own but are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We also address a common theological misconception: Many claim the Mosaic Law is abolished, yet Jesus (Matthew 5:17-19) and Paul (Romans 3:31, 7:12) affirm the continued importance of God's commandments. Our viewpoint needs to align more closely with biblical truth over common theological belief if, when testing against scripture, we are brought to recognize that the New Covenant writes God's law on our hearts (Jeremiah 31:31-33) rather than removing it.• Freedom in Christ is not a license to sin.• Jesus and Paul uphold the Torah as relevant for believers today.• The body is sacred and must be kept pure as the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.• The New Covenant calls us to holiness, not lawlessness. 1 Corinthians 6:12-20Are you honoring God with your body? In "Loving the Lost Like Paul" (Romans 9:1-5), Pastor Bob highlighted Paul's deep compassion and commitment to spreading the Gospel, challenging us to examine our own burden for the lost. He emphasized Paul's willingness to sacrifice everything for his people's salvation, urging us to seek a God-given burden that fuels impactful evangelism. Understanding cultural context is key, as seen in past revivals, to strategically share the Gospel today. Let's pray for hearts like Paul's—deeply moved for the lost and ready to share Christ's love in our communities.

Fighting in a relationship The “problem” usually isn't the “problem” Is a symptom of a Deeper issue Deeper Issue: Selfish Hurt Bitterness Anger In order for the relationship to FLOURISH, you have to get to the ROOT CAUSE This makes the relationship healthy Something we all know… Healthy Things grow Fruit trees produce fruit Also… When we are healthy, the important things in our lives grow fruit Relationships People/Kids Ideas Actions Etc… It is the time of year when we all take stock of where we are Health Finances Friendships What is important to us Do more of Do less of As Christians, we ask different questions What does God's Word say about being healthy? Takes clues from Paul… Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. To be spiritually healthy, we must grow by the “Making New” of our minds The important question is… HOW How is our Mind renewed?   What is our MIND? The way we… Think Feel Act React WHY behind the WHAT The reason this is important is because our culture has answers for this… Manifesting/Visualizing what you want Manifestation is the idea that you can bring a positive outcome into your life by simply “claiming” it as your own and believing it will happen   Scripture has another answer Let's look at a parable Jesus told What is a parable? Parable = A short moral story that tells of a spiritual and theological truth   Also found in: Mark 4 & Matthew 18 Luke 8 4 As a large crowd was gathering, and people were coming to Jesus from every town, he said in a parable, 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some seed fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky devoured it. 6 Other seed fell on the rock; when it grew up, it withered away, since it lacked moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8 Still other seed fell on good ground; when it grew up, it produced fruit: a hundred times what was sown.” As he said this, he called out, “Let anyone who has ears to hear listen.”   Find there are 3 possible outcomes/responses: 1: NO GROWTH (Unhealthy) 2: SOME GROWTH – NO FRUIT (Sick/Diseased) 3: HEALTHY GROWTH WITH FRUIT   Jesus tells the meaning of His parable… Luke 8 11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. The learned truth and revelation of God to us, His people This Truth is Spoken, read, heard, learned 2 Timothy 3 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you, 15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. Back to Jesus' Parable… Luke 8 12 The seed along the path are those who have heard and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.   1: NO GROWTH (Unhealthy) Not those that “have believed and lost their salvation” These are those who have HEARD TRUTH — and REJECTED IT Our culture They are “HARDENED” by sin/disbelief Hard Heart Rather believe the lie than receive truth OUR RESPONSE: Pray for the hard hearts to soften to God's truth and salvation Luke 8 13 And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and fall away in a time of testing. 14 As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit.   2: SOME GROWTH – NO FRUIT (Sick/Diseased) Both show a different side of… SHALLOW FAITH Seed on the rock – Shallow when Hard time Come There is no strength to stand strong Wise and foolish man Seed in the thorns – Shallow when Temptation comes The Child who chooses the easy things NOW over better things to come Prodigal son Pay close attention here… This is the category of MANY CHRISTIANS Don't see any fruit in their life because their faith is SICK/DISEASED OUR RESPONSE: What's your fruit? Are you? Jealous or Content Complainer or Thankful Bitter or Forgiving Impatient or Steadfast Proud or Humble Finally… Luke 8 15 But the seed in the good ground—these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, produce fruit. 3: HEALTHY GROWTH WITH FRUIT Healthy things grow… We established that… To be spiritually healthy, we must grow by the “Making New” of our minds   Our minds are made new through… Faith – Trusting (Hearing the word with an honest and good heart) Faithfulness – Persevering (Enduring to produce fruit) Final Challenge: Determine the Atmosphere of your heart/mind The Atmosphere is the… Patterns Processes Environments That you live in regularly   What you: See Hear Consume   Who you are: Surrounded by Influenced by Lead by   Jesus' Warning Luke 8 16 “No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light. 17 For nothing is concealed that won't be revealed, and nothing hidden that won't be made known and brought to light. 18 Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” Start Strong! Paul does not define. Any other scriptures about hair length? None OT or NT What is 1 Corinthians about? Troubled Church in need of correction. The pagan culture of Corinth was effecting the Church. Chapter 11 is about headship.  The head of Christ is God… The head of man is Christ… the head of the wife is her husband.  Distinct relationship difference between men and women. So what do these verses mean? Because there is no other teaching about hair, it leads me to believe Paul is addressing the culture of Corinth.  Hippocrates (Greek Physician 400-300BC) believed hair had to do with fertility.

Trinity Evangel Church
1: A Prophetic Complaint

Trinity Evangel Church

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2024 73:39

One of the most frequent questions asked by God's people is, "How long?" It's more than a question, it's a complaint, and yet it is *a complaint of faith*. The complaint has no teeth if there is no God to answer the question. And that God must have power and be righteous and have already revealed enough for people with faith to see that how it should be isn't how it is. How long until God makes things *right*?This question opens the burden of the prophet Habakkuk. And while the LORD gave this vision with particular people/nations in mind, and while the first level fulfillments have already taken place, the situation in Habakkuk's day bears much similarity to our own. The realities of God's sovereignty, justice, and salvation are very much still at stake. At least four parts of this three chapter minor prophet are familiar to us. The last few verses (3:17-19) are often quoted at weddings, fitting with a “for better or worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health" vibe. We also sing about all the earth in silence (2:20). We long for the earth to be “filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (2:14). And especially because that is what we want, Habakkuk 2:4 resonates the most: “the righteous shall live by his faith.”This was the whole theme of Romans according to Paul (Romans 1:16-17). The gospel saves believers, and saved believers keep on believing. Faith is life, from start to finish. The author of Hebrews also quotes Habakkuk 2:4 in terms of our confidence and courage and not being cowards (Hebrews 10:38). Faith was necessary for Habakkuk and any of the righteous. Faith isn't only the first breath, it is the blood and bones of our life. The book has two main divisions, both of which name "Habakkuk the prophet." In 1:1 the prophet has an "oracle" and in 3:1 he has a “prayer.” The oracle includes two complaints, the second caused by the Lord's answer to the first, and the second answer includes five woes. The dialogue between Habakkuk and the Lord take up the first two chapters. The entire last chapter was Habakkuk's submission to the Lord and was intended to be sung, as shown by the final words. This morning we'll meet the prophet and consider his problem in context. It's more than facts of history, it is food for hope.# The Prophet's Burden (verse 1)There is not much of an intro or background on Habakkuk.> The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw. (Habakkuk 1:1 ESV)Habakkuk is the name of **the prophet**, and all we get is his title. There's nothing else about this prophet in the Old Testament, though based on the content of this book he must have been a contemporary of Nahum and Zephaniah (the books before and after Habakkuk), as well as Jeremiah. This puts him in Israel when Josiah was King of Judah, near the last half of the 7th century BC. **Oracle** is a typical word from the Lord, a message, a “prophecy” (NIV), a “pronouncement” (CSB). Sometimes translated "burden" (KJV); it's a heavy/hard message. It came in the form of a vision because it was something Habakkuk **saw**. These are small but vital details because it might seem as if Habakkuk's questions are personal. And they are. But the observations Habakkuk makes about Israel and Babylon and the future, as well as the responses from the Lord, are all revelation Habakkuk *received*. The prophecy is God's Word, and so profitable for *us* as well.# The (First) Complaint (verses 2-4)Here is Habakkuk's complaint of faith. Two questions make up the prophets cries. > O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, > and you will not hear? > Or cry to you “Violence!” > and you will not save? > (Habakkuk 1:2 ESV)Habakkuk calls on the **LORD**, *Yahweh*, the name God gave to Israel when He made covenant with them. The prophet has been praying, this is not his first prayer. He's wondering **how long shall I cry...or cry**, because it seems that the Lord is not replying. Things are *bad*, and we'll see more specifics in verses 3-4, but there is **Violence!** (a key word in Habakkuk, used here, the next verse, 1:9, 2:8 and twice in 2:17), such that God is needed for salvation. Why isn't the Lord answering and stopping the damage and destruction?> Why do you make me see iniquity, > and why do you idly look at wrong? > Destruction and violence are before me; > strife and contention arise. > (Habakkuk 1:3 ESV) > Three pairs of problems that are Habakkuk's face. Can the Lord not see? Or does He see and **idly look**, doing nothing about it? **Why** is God just standing by?**Iniquity** and **wrong**. The first word also has the idea of injustice, which, we only know about justice because of God to begin with. And so the second word relates to unjust actions, the consequences of violating the standard. **Destruction** and **violence** are filling up his news feed, they are **before me**, all he can see. Violence is what he's been crying out about (see verse 2), and the results are damaging beyond repair, ravaging and ruinous. The third pair are **strife** and **contention**. Broken standards break society. It's obvious, but sin makes stupid sinners. Ethics and morality are *relational*, before God, yes, but between one another. We can't violate what is right toward another person and think that won't start unraveling the whole into a mess, especially when no one stops it. Why does the Lord “tolerate” (NIV) any of this? > So the law is paralyzed, > and justice never goes forth. > For the wicked surround the righteous; > so justice goes forth perverted. > (Habakkuk 1:4 ESV)Four lines of results. First, **law is paralyzed**, and this is fine translation, but the Hebrew verb carries the idea of making something cold, like one's hand, so *numbed*, and ineffective, useless, or paralyzed. The law was supposed to *hold back* the violence and bring forth justice. While many cultures/nations had some sort of laws, using the word Hebrew word *torah* for **law** shows that the corruption is in *Judah*. This is *internal* fraud, dishonesty, lawbreaking by judges. So “justice is never upheld” (NASB), no one seems to be getting what they deserve. That leaves nowhere to go for the righteous, **the wicked surround** them, or “hem in” (NIV). When things are working, the righteous could appeal to the authorities and those who disobeyed would be punished, property could be restored. The process provides no protection anymore. And **justice** is **perverted**, twisted; order becomes chaos. Justice comes out *crooked*. # ConclusionThough Habakkuk complains that the LORD was inattentive, He was actually already lining up world powers. Judgment was coming, which, turns out, would be even less comfortable than the injustice. God's answer is that Judah *will be* punished. God is going to send the Babylonians (Chaldeans) per verse 6. It would be a surprise, and this helps us date Habakkuk itself. Manasseh was king in Judah for 55 years, the most evil and idolatrous king of Judah, and then his son Amon ruled for two years following in Manasseh's sins. But Assyria was the superpower in the Middle East during their reigns; so Habakkuk's burden must come later. Josiah became king of Judah around 640 BC when he was only 8 years old. During Josiah's rule righteousness was restored. He was already reforming the nation, and when workers repairing the temple found a copy of the Book of the Law, Josiah humbled himself and even more so and sought to lead for the Lord. Josiah died in 609. Babylon rose under Nabopolassar and defeated Assyria at Nineveh, just before Josiah's death, in 612. Then his son Nebuchadnezzar marched on Jerusalem three times: 605 - when Daniel was taken captive, again in 597 when King Jehoiakim was taken captive, and finally conquering Judah and taking even more captives. So the cultural wickedness got bad *quickly*, shortly after 609, and Habakkuk could see the anxiety and agitation. The consequences were coming. This leads to Habakkuk's “wait a second, though, how can an even *more* wicked people punish this (less) wicked, covenant people?” The oracle of Habakkuk has *happened*; it's history. Corruption for the covenant community (Judah) had catastrophic consequences. God will judge the wicked, and He will even use other wicked peoples to do it, as He determines is right. The United States are not Israel/Judah. But, by way of application, our nation did know better, it's in our books. We cannot claim ignorance of God or His standards. With Habakkuk we are allowed to cry for God's justice. We should want the glory of the Lord to fill the earth. And as Christians we should remember that judgment begins with the household of God (1 Peter 4:17). With Habakkuk, the righteous shall live by faith. ----------## ChargeWhen the foundations crumble, that is not the time to abandon hope, that's when hope is potent. When the windows are broken, that's not time to leave your trash on the floor. In other words, what should you do when so many things aren't right? By faith YOU do what is right.## Benediction:> For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And> “If the righteous is scarcely saved,> what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”> Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. Who wrote the Book of Romans in the Bible? Some say Paul (Romans 1:1) and others say Tertius (Roman 16:22). Why does it matter? How can the misreading of any text lead you down the wrong path?In order to have No Superficial Study of the Bible you need to follow the plan laid out in the very Bible itself: Use the Bible to study the Bible. That's why Jesus could sum up all the law and the prophets with the two greatest commands and in fulfilling the second command The Holy Spirit guided men to write all the "one anothers." For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website.1 We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us— 3 we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.John the apostle is confronting the false system of Docetism, as we learned yesterday. The docetic Christ wasn't physical -- hence John's emphasis that Jesus was tangible.According to verse 2, eternal life is available to all through Jesus Christ. This suggests that none of us possesses it innately. Romans 6:23 tells us that eternal life is a gift we receive through Christ. This implies that no one will truly live eternally who has not come through Jesus Christ. And yet what an incredible gift for those willing to receive it!Following the teachings of Docetism removed one from the fellowship.John has joy when the members in his sphere of influence (his ministry, here specifically in Asia Minor) are on track spiritually. It is deeply burdensome, for a leader, especially, when Christians are struggling with their faith and commitment (2 Cor 11:28-29).5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; 7 but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.Is light perfection? No, light (John 3:19-21) is characteristic of God, his word and his people. In other words, judge these false Christians not just by their theology, but also by their morality.God is light -- and light has a strong moral component (Eph 4:17-19; 5:8-14).Other chapters with the darkness-light theme are found in the letters of Paul (Romans 13, 2 Corinthians 6, Ephesians 5, 1 Thessalonians 5, etc), the letters of Peter (1 Peter 2), and especially in the four gospels.Light and darkness don't mix (vv.5-7), and woe to those who confuse the two (Isaiah 5:20)!“Walking in the light”—is this possible for a mere human?Absolutely yes!The Greek of v.6 has an interesting phrase: "do what is true."Walking in the light does not mean perfection, but an eagerness to obey Christ's commands, especially (in 1 John) the command to love one another (2:6, 2:10). If it is impossible to walk in the light, then we are all lost, because walking as Jesus walked and walking in the light are one and the same. The opponents of John's churches claimed to be in the light, but they were not, for two reasons:They did not walk in the light; they did not walk as followers of Christ. (See 1 John 2:3-6.)They were not in fellowship with other Christians. In fact they stood in opposition to the true disciples. (See 1 John 4:5-6.)8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.The Gnostics did not admit to wrong and claimed to be without sin (1:8-10).Walking in the light is not only not perfection; it is a lifestyle where there is the open admission of imperfection. It is parallel to “confessing our sins,” that is, being open about our lives and refusing to hide in the darkness (John 3:19-21).We are purified from sin even while we are sinning (vv.7-9), because (in our attitude) we are walking in the light.Christians don't go back and forth from darkness to light unless they leave the Lord completely. We have crossed from death to life; that's settled. Once the bill is paid, we don't go back to the cash register and “settle up” again! It's paid. Some Christians falsely imagine that when they sin they go back to the darkness, and when they confess they are forgiven again and come back into the light. What agony! What insecurity! What error! What a misunderstanding of grace -- a lapse into Galatians 3:3 theology!Confession is vital (v.9).It needs to be a part of our lifestyle. It is part of walking in the light. However, a Christian who fails to confess every sin is not going to be condemned. Imagine the scene at Judgment Day. Baptism and subsequent confession have been described as “a bath and a shower in the blood of Jesus."We as Christians don't need the bath again, but it sure feels good to “shower off' the unrighteousness in the presence of God.Recall Jesus' conversation with Peter in John 13.Why pray for forgiveness when our relationship with God is secure? As an illustration, take marriage. When we sin against our spouse, we need to ask for forgiveness. For what purpose? To become married again, or to mend the relationship?Christians ask for God's forgiveness not that they might be spared from going to hell (that was taken care of in baptism), but that the personal relationship with God might be healed.Salvation is no excuse for not asking for forgiveness when we have hurt God.Thought questions:  When is the last time you faced temptation and said, “No, I am not going to give in, because that is darkness”? What things have you decided not to allow in your life because they belong to the darkness, and not to the light?Do you enjoy walking in the light, or does guilt prevent you?How free do you feel to confess your sins to other people? How have you seen that confession truly brings you into deeper fellowship with God and with others?

Introduction to PaulRomans • May 22, 2022Teacher: Adam Barnett--Our desire is that you would read the designated section for yourself in Scripture first, and then read the three entries that correspond to that Scripture—theological, pastoral, and devotional. At the end of the three entries is space for you to write any reflections, questions, or thoughts you had on the text.  Acts 9:1-22 NIVMeanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priestand asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him,“Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.“Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone.Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn't he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?”Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.Raymond Brown“Paul was an itinerant artisan who would have had to struggle to get money for food. Horseback travel was difficult. And Paul would not even have been able or willing to spend money for a donkey to carry his baggage. So we have to picture Paul trudging along the roads, carrying his limited possessions in a sack, at the maximum covering twenty miles a day. Often, he had to sleep somewhere near the road, amidst the cold, rain, and snow. As a poor man he would have been easily victimized by bandits, especially in country areas that were less efficiently controlled by police. Sea journeys were not much safer.”2 Corinthians 6:4-10 NIVRather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.Romans 1:1-6 NIVPaul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name's sake. And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
