The Bible Provocateur
Essential Resurrection (Part 4 of 4)

The Bible Provocateur

Send us a textWhat happens when we die? More importantly, what happens after that? These questions lie at the heart of Christian theology, yet misconceptions abound even among devoted believers. Diving deep into passages like John 5:25-29, we uncover the biblical teaching on resurrection—both spiritual and physical. The spiritual resurrection happens now when dead souls come alive through faith in Christ. This "first resurrection" is our regeneration, protecting us from the second death. But there's also a future bodily resurrection where all humanity will stand before one throne. Many have been taught that Christians will be raptured in a separate resurrection event, with unbelievers facing judgment 1,000+ years later. Scripture tells a different story. From Daniel 12:2 to Acts 24:15, the Bible consistently describes one general resurrection where both righteous and unrighteous rise together—but with dramatically different outcomes. The Great White Throne judgment isn't a separate event from the Bema Seat of Christ—they're the same judgment viewed from different perspectives. Like at Pentecost where some heard clear gospel proclamation while others heard only "babbling," judgment day will be experienced differently depending on which side you're on.Perhaps most sobering is the truth about eternal separation. Biblical "death" never means non-existence—it means separation. Just as physical death separates body and soul temporarily, eternal death means permanent separation from God's goodness while continuing to exist forever. There's no annihilation, no eventual reprieve, not even a moment's respite from divine judgment. These aren't abstract theological concepts but urgent realities that should provoke us to action. Christ's resurrection guarantees our own—either to glory or condemnation. Which will it be for you?Support the show

This Palm Sunday, Pastor Adam dives into one of the most profound identities of Jesus—the Son of Man. As the final week of Jesus' life begins, we reflect not only on His divinity but on His full humanity. Why did Jesus refer to Himself as the Son of Man more than any other title? What does that mean for us today? From Daniel's prophecy to the cross at Calvary, this message explores how Jesus embraced self-denial, chose servanthood, and endured suffering to restore a relationship between God and humanity. You'll be challenged to step away from a self-centered culture and embrace a life of daily surrender and service.

In October, we will celebrate National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. You should observe it all year round, of course. My guest today has a lot of great insight into risk frameworks. He is Daniel Eliot, the Lead for Small Business Engagement in the Applied Cybersecurity Division of The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). [3:48] NIST is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Today, we will discuss some of the publicly available risk management frameworks and how they've evolved through the years and the new frameworks that address AI, as well. [4:05] You may remember Daniel from his appearance on an episode in April 2020, when he was with the National Cybersecurity Alliance. He is back to provide some new tips for the global risk management community. [4:18] Daniel Eliot, welcome back to RIMScast! [4:42] Justin and Daniel comment on some things that have changed since April 2020. Daniel was at the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA). [5:50] Now Daniel is the Lead for Small Business Engagement in the Applied Cybersecurity Division of The NIST. He shares his journey from NCA to NIST via the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, a NIST facility operated by Mitre. [6:52] Daniel is happy to be back supporting the small business community. [7:04] Daniel had worked in a small tech startup for almost seven years. He helped them scale the business and manage the development of their product. Next, Daniel joined the University of Delaware's Small Business Development Center, helping tech businesses start and scale. [8:16] Daniel applied for an SBA grant to help small businesses with cybersecurity. This was in 2014. The Cybersecurity Framework was published in 2014. Daniel applied the Cybersecurity Framework to small businesses. That started Daniel's career in small business cybersecurity. [9:32] There's a new NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF) Small Enterprise Quick Start Guide. Daniel's role at NIST is to coordinate across NIST, government, and the private sector, to create opportunities for the small business community to engage with NIST expertise. [10:19] The RMF Small Enterprise Quick Start Guide is a product of that coordination across NIST, government, and the private sector community. In February, NIST produced the Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 Small Business Quick Start Guide. [10:44] NIST decided to do a Quick Start Guide for a risk management framework for small to medium enterprises. The Risk Management Framework is a process. It's a holistic and repeatable seven-step process for managing security and privacy risks. [11:23] The NIST RMF Quick Start Guide provides an overview of the seven steps of the process, the foundational tasks for each step, tips for getting started with each step, a sample planning table, key terminology and definitions, questions to consider, and related resources. [11:53] It's RIMS plug time! Webinars! All RIMS Webinar registration pages are available at RIMS/org/Webinars. On August 27th, Riskonnect returns to discuss How To Successfully Deploy AI in Risk Management. [12:12] On September 5th, Merrill Herzog makes their RIMS Webinars debut with the Role of Insurance in Building Resilience Against an Active Assailant Attack. On September 19th, Origami Risk returns to deliver Leveraging Integrated Risk Management For Strategic Advantage. [12:28] Justin jumped ahead a bit. On September 12th, HUB International returns to deliver the third part of their Ready for Tomorrow series, Pivot and Swerve: Staying Agile During Shifting Market Dynamics. [12:44] Justin is delighted to be joined by the moderator for that session, the Chief Marketing Officer for Canada at HUB International, Linda Regner Dykeman. Justin welcomes Linda to RIMScast! [13:13] The webinar will be at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on September 12th. Linda says they will be discussing current market trends and challenges. The industry has been able to produce some very strong profits over the last few years. [13:29] The market needed correction after many years of unprofitability driven by weather events in the property line where rates seemed to be unsustainable. Casualty also had its issues, particularly with Directors and Officers Liability. [13:47] As a result of the profitability the industry was able to achieve over the last few years, most carriers have become more competitive in growing their books of business. This competition is not being seen in all lines, segments, or geographies. [14:04] Some catastrophe-prone zones such as BC and Alberta have not seen the same level of competition across the board. As the market transitions from a hard market to a competitive environment, there is some unusual and inconsistent behavior. [14:21] Carriers in Canada are being more flexible with their appetite. London is looking to grow significantly over the next couple of years with goals of hitting $100 billion by 2025. Add to that NGAs who are seeing their market share change as local carriers become more competitive. [14:39] As we transition out of what was considered to be a hard market, we see a lot of inconsistency in this market. [14:48] Add to this the supply chain issues, which are not what they once were, the economy is flat with spending, once normalized for an increase in population, it reflects that of a market in a recession. [15:02] We, as brokers are finding competitive solutions to protect our clients. We have to pivot and swerve to discover the right opportunities. [15:13] We had a significant rain event in Toronto, followed by one of the worst wildfires Jasper has ever seen, seemingly a once-in-a-hundred-year event; weather catastrophes are more severe and more frequent. [15:27] How is this going to change the availability of capacity and pricing? Time will tell, as insurers try to figure out if their pricing models included the right loadings for these events. [15:49] Being informed by what is happening in the market; the trends, the opportunities, what's available, and partnering with the right broker, will help a risk manager make an informed decision, appropriate for their business. [16:11] The panelists have decades of experience and expertise across North America. They work with clients, markets, and other experts and bring a much broader perspective and experience to this session. [16:26] Steve Pottle is the risk manager on the panel. He's been omnipresent in RIMS Canada for years. He's a former RIMS VP and is currently the Director for Risk and Safety Services at Thompson Rivers University. Justin says he's one of the best and Linda agrees. [16:57] Linda will moderate. She'll ask the panelists questions HUB International has received from its clients, based on what they are seeing happening in the environment around them. She would also like the audience to pose some questions. Audience participation is encouraged. [17:21] Justin thanks Linda Regner Dykeman of HUB International, and will see her again on September 12th, 2024 for the third installment of HUB's Ready for Tomorrow series, Pivot and Swerve: Staying Agile During Shifting Market Dynamics. [17:37] Let's return to today's interview with Daniel Eliot from NIST. [17:53] Daniel states that the Risk Management Framework is a repeatable seven-step process for managing security and privacy risks. It starts with preparation, categorizing, and understanding the information that your organization processes, stores, and transmits.  [18:20] Then you select controls, and implement those controls to protect the security and privacy of the systems. Then you assess, authorize, and monitor the controls. Are the selected controls producing the desired results? Are there changes to the organization that require new controls? [18:45] You follow the seven steps of the framework in order and repeat them in a cycle. Keep going through it. Every organization regularly changes. Technologies change. People change. That's why the framework has to be repeatable and flexible. [19:05] NIST published this Risk Management Framework Smal Enterprise Quick Start Guide as a tool to raise awareness within the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Community about what the Risk Management Framework is and how to get started with it. [19:26] This Quick Start Guide is not intended to guide you on your journey from start to finish for a comprehensive risk management implementation. It is a starting point. [19:41] The Guide has an overview of the steps of the Risk Management Framework, some foundational tasks for each of the RMF steps, some tips for getting started, some sample planning tables, and graphics to help people understand concepts that might be new to them. [20:02] NIST spent a lot of time defining key terminology, extracting terms out of the Risk Management Framework, and highlighting them in this Quick Start Guide. There are phrases and terms in the Risk Management Framework that some people new to it might not understand. [20:24] For example, “authorization boundary.” The Guide highlights and illustrates what these terms mean in the Risk Management Framework and adds questions for organizations to consider and use internally for discussion. The answers may be different for every organization. [21:12] This Guide is a derivative tool from the existing publication that went out for public comment. The Quick Start Guide did not go out for public comment but NIST has circulated Quick Start Guides to some small businesses they know to make sure it's hitting the right note. [21:56] Daniel monitors commentary and looks at how the Guide is received out in the world once it's published. In every Quick Start Guide, there is an opportunity for people to contact NIST if they have questions or if there is an error. NIST is always open to feedback. [23:03] In small businesses, Daniel finds the owner or operator is the Chief Risk Officer, the Janitor, the CISO, and the Chief Marketing Officer. Anyone can use the Risk Management Framework. It's a process. [23:25] Federal agencies, contractors to the federal government, and other sources that use or operate a federal information system typically use the suite of NIST Risk Management Standards and Guidelines to develop and implement a risk-based approach. [23:48] A lot of the audience for this Small Enterprise Quick Start Guide might be small universities, small municipalities, or small federal agencies implementing this Risk Management Framework. [24:27] We have time for one more break! The Spencer Educational Foundation's goal is to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals. That is achieved, in part, by a collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the U.S. and Canada. [24:45] Whether you want to apply for a grant, participate in the Risk Manager on Campus program, or just learn more about Spencer, visit SpencerEd.org. [24:55] On September 12th, 2024, we look forward to seeing you at the Spencer Funding Their Future Gala at The Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Our recent guest from Episode 293, Lilian Vanvieldt-Gray, will be our honoree. [25:11] Lilian is the Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at Alliant Insurance Services and she will be honored for her valuable contributions to supporting the future of risk management and insurance. [25:28] That was a great episode, so after you finish this one, please go back and listen to Episode 293. [25:34] Let's conclude our interview with Daniel Eliot of NIST. [26:10] Daniel introduces the U.S. AI Safety Institute, housed within NIST. It's tasked with advancing the science, practice, and adoption of AI safety across the spectrum of risks, including those to national security, public safety, and individual rights. [26:39] The efforts of the U.S. AI Safety Institute initially focused on the priorities assigned to NIST under President Biden's Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. [26:51] On July 26th, 2024, they released resources for a variety of aspects of AI technology. Two are new to the public. The first is an initial public draft of a guidance document intended to help software developers mitigate the risks of generative AI and dual-use foundation models. [27:19] The other is a testing platform intended to help AI system users and developers measure how certain types of attacks can degrade the performance of an AI system. These are two opportunities for the public to provide comments on these publications and tools. [27:49] There is a link to the call for comments in this episode's show notes. [28:03] At NIST, foundational publications go out for public comment. NIST wants to hear from U.S. citizens and people all over the world to get their perspectives on NIST's approach to what they're addressing. This is a community effort. Comment periods are important. [28:37] From Daniel's perspective of small business, he seeks the comments of small businesses on these publications. Authors need to hear from organizations, large and small. [28:53] These two new publications are open for public comment. [28:59] three releases are final publications. One is The AI Risk Management Framework Generative AI Profile, which helps organizations identify unique risks posed by generative AI. It includes actions for generative AI risk management. [29:34] A second publication is the Secure Software Development Practices for Generative AI and Dual Use Foundation Models. It addresses concerns about Generative AI systems being compromised with malicious training data that would adversely affect system performance. [30:16] The third publication is A Plan for Global Engagement on AI Standards. It's intended to drive worldwide development and implementation of AI-related consensus standards. Standards require global input from businesses, governments, non-profits, and academia. [30:57] These three final publications have been informed by public comment periods. They're ready to hit the ground running and people can put them into action. [31:15] Daniel is part of the Applied Cybersecurity Division of NIST. The U.S. AI Safety Institute is a different part of NIST. [31:44] Every once in a while, public comments receive spammy messages. [32:23] Daniel says all cybersecurity and privacy risk management comes back to governance and having policies and procedures in place, knowing your contractual and legal responsibilities. Organizations need policies that guide behavior for the appropriate use of AI in their business. [32:59] Individuals in companies have pasted confidential company information into publicly available AI systems. That creates a vulnerability. Have a policy around the use of these tools. [33:31] Criminals have used AI to upgrade phishing scams, reduce grammatical errors, and craft more convincing appeals. [35:00] NIST is raising awareness of different ways of identifying phishing attacks besides looking for grammatical errors, such as looking at the links and the calls to action and other factors that show it is a phishing scam. AI is contributing to their increasing sophistication. [35:43] Daniel shares his tip for new risk professionals. Familiarize yourselves with the suite of resources that NIST has available for cybersecurity and privacy risk management. They have a broad variety of risk management frameworks and resources, like the Quick Start Guide. [36:42] There are online courses, extensive FAQs with answers, and archived talks from SMEs. Take advantage of these resources. Also, let NIST know what other resources might be helpful to you. The core of NIST guidance for any framework is good governance. [37:21] Understand your mission and requirements. Create and maintain policies for good behavior. Understand your supply chain dependencies and vulnerabilities. Good governance sets your organization up for success when implementing and monitoring risk-mitigating controls. [37:56] NIST offers consistent, clear, concise, and actionable resources to small businesses. Since 2018, they have maintained a website, NIST Small Business Cybersecurity Corner, with over 70 resources on the site, all tailored to small businesses. The Quick Start Guides are there. [38:32] The resources include short videos, tip sheets, case studies, and guidance organized by both topic and industry. All the resources are free and produced by federal agencies, such as NIST, FBI, CISA, as well as nonprofit organizations. It's a one-stop shop for this information. [39:04] The resources are regularly updated and expanded to keep the content fresh and relevant. The resource library has the Cybersecurity Basics Section, with eight basic steps businesses can inexpensively implement to reduce cybersecurity risks. [39:28] The Cybersecurity Framework Page highlights the CSF and small business resources related to the CSF. There is topical guidance on Multi-Factor Authentication, Ransomware, Phishing, Government Contracting Requirements, and Choosing a Vendor or Service Provider. [39:53] All the resources are available at NIST.gov/ITL/SmallBusinessCyber. The link is in this episode's show notes. The resources are there for you to use in your organization. [40:30] Justin says, “It has been such a pleasure to reconnect with you here on RIMScast! I always love it when you post on LinkedIn! I think you're great! You're keeping me informed. Happy National Cybersecurity Awareness Month to you!” [40:55] With developments in tech and AI, cybersecurity has taken a back seat, but Justin says it will come back pretty hard. Justin feels it will be sooner than four-and-a-half years for Daniel to return to RIMScast. [41:23] Whatever new technology comes out, cybercriminals are looking at it to see how they can exploit it. There will always be a cybersecurity component to it. [42:05] Daniel Eliot, thank you so much for rejoining us here on RIMScast! Can the ancient prophecies of Daniel shed light on our modern world? Join us as we unpack the final chapter of the book of Daniel and its striking relevance to today. From Daniel 12:4-12, we discuss why Daniel was told to seal up his visions until the end times, and how our current era's knowledge explosion fits into this prophecy. You'll hear a comparison between the natural human understanding of God and the deeper spiritual insights granted to Christians. Our discussion highlights the severe end-time tribulations, the purification of the faithful, and the prophetic timeline of three and a half years of intense persecution. Discover how the wickedness of those following the Antichrist grows, while true spiritual comprehension is granted to those who are born again.Shifting gears, we delve into Matthew 24 to clarify its focus on the great tribulation, distinguishing it from the rapture discussed in 1 Thessalonians 4. We'll explore the purification process of the Jewish people during this tumultuous period, the separation of the righteous from the wicked, and the resurrection promise given to Daniel. Learn about the four distinct parts of the resurrection and the contrasting promises given to Old Testament and tribulation saints compared to today's believers in Jesus Christ. Stick around for a sneak peek at our upcoming discussions, where we'll share unique biblical insights drawn from experiences in the medical field. From Daniel who continued to pray openly to David who ran toward Goliath, Scripture gives many examples of those who lived boldly and confidently in the midst of fearful circumstances! The strength that these men demonstrated in the face of fear was because they kept the gaze of their soul on God and Him alone. If we as believers walk in the fear of the Lord, our lives will not only be free from compromise, but we will also embolden other believers to fear God and stand for the truth. In a day of political correctness and pressure to conform, we need more than ever to be free from fear of man. But how? By fearing God! What we fear becomes our focus. It is our focus that determines the direction our life takes and the fruit it bears. If you see negative fruits of fear in your life, ask yourself this question, “What has my focus?” As we take the gaze of our soul and place it on Christ, we will experience freedom from the fear of man as well as the peace that comes from fearing God alone!  Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? Daniel is now an old man and seasoned after many decades of service to Babylonians kings. However, the new king is not a fan. He only turns to Daniel for help in interpreting the handwriting on the wall as a last resort. Daniel never misses an opportunity to be a testimony for God in the court and this is no exception. Who do you belong to? This is an important question because who you are is defined by whose you are. We have forgotten who we are because we have forgotten who God is! God made us, and He has authority over us – He alone defines us. From Daniel's captivity in 605 B.C. to the 21st century, a distorted identity will always lead to death and captivity. Our Babylonian civilization is in open rebellion against God's image and kingdom. If you're a parent, it's vitally important to be proactive in teaching your child whose they are, raising them in biblical community, and training them personally to put God in His rightful place in their lives.

There is a dirty four-letter word that many feel is an evil necessity or a means to an end - WORK. Did you know that God created us to work? As a matter of fact, Genesis tells us that God, who is the author of everything, worked six days and then rested. That means we are like God when we work. But for many of us, we hate work because it can be a pit of difficult circumstances and destructive coworkers. Daniel's work was the same, but his work was a testimony beyond reproach. From Daniel's example, we can ask ourselves four key questions regarding work, and invite God to turn our pit into a platform!

Hi friend, I'm so glad you're listening to this update. I will share a very useful tip today. Before I tell you about that, I want to ask for your help: Are you one who made a New-Year's resolution last year to read the whole Bible? Well, how did that go for you? Would you be willing to share a word of testimony from your year reading the Bible to encourage others? If so, please use your voice memo app on your cell phone to record your message. You might share a verse that meant a lot to you this year, or share some way God used his Word in your life. I will post your comments at the dailybiblereading.info website. I will tell you how to make and send your audio file to me at the end of this episode. If you are one of those who made that decision a year ago and have kept up your reading since January 1, you know that we are now in the big Prophecy binge-reading time at the end of the year, reading minor prophets, Isaiah, and Revelation. The possibility of seeing correspondences between your three daily readings goes up to about 95%. Some people find the prophetic genre difficult. Recently I had a conversation with one of our church's elders. He had undertaken to do a thorough study through the book of Jeremiah, and found it very difficult. More than that, he complained about his frustration in understanding the book of Revelation. I want to offer a little help in this area that I re-discovered recently. Here's the tip I mentioned: Dr. Bob Utley's Free Bible Commentary (http://www.freebiblecommentary.org/) Note the word Free! What you get in Utley's commentary is expert information that is gleaned from a lifetime of research. Dr. Utley has dedicated himself to making a high-quality commentary on every book in the Bible. His work is scholarly, yet written so that it is easy to understand. So, in view of our current prophecy-reading binge, I would like to share some thoughts on the prophetic genre, which is also called the Apocalyptic genre. Many of us recently read the book of Daniel. You may recall that chapter 11 is filled with incredible details prophesied to Daniel by an awesome angelic messenger. I am not going to go into any of the details now. What I will do is to give you some introductory material from Bob Utley's commentary on Daniel 11. I will summarizing some general points about the prophetic genre that Bob Utley quoted from D. Brent Sandy's book Plowshares and Pruning Hooks: Rethinking the Language of Biblical Prophecy and Apocalyptic. From Daniel 2, "What Makes Prophecy Problematic?" "the question is whether emotional language is necessarily exact language," p. 41 "hyperboles, in effect, stretch the truth in order to increase the impact of the words," p. 41 "a prophet's intent may be to express emotion more than exactness," p. 41 "at what level are readers supposed to understand the prophetic visions—every detail? The overall picture?" p. 48 From Daniel 3, "How Does the Language of Prophecy Work?" "if we fail to grasp the inherent metaphorical nature of language, we fail to understand prophecy," p. 59 From Daniel 5, "How Does the Language of Apocalyptic Work?" Are the details in the vision allusive and symbolic or precise and explicit? Generally, the images lack precision," p. 117 "anticipating the details of political events of the fourth through the second centuries raises the issue whether the point of the vision is the details or the overall impact," p. 119 "but we must not begin with the specific lest we fail to grasp the global!" p. 122 "it is also expected with the nature of apocalyptic language that some details may simply be for effect; stated another way, some details may be make-believe," p. 124 "details may have no particular significance other than to give the account more emotive power," p. 126 "there is a certain amount of futility; therefore, in trying to determine the significance of all the details of apocalyptic visions," p. 126 "to read the Apocalypse with a microscope, even striving to decipher the significance of the most minute detail, defrauds the genre of it intended function," p. 127 "understanding the orality of the Apocalypse underscores the point that correct interpretation pays more attention to the overall impression of the visions than to the individual details," p. 127 "from the vision in Daniel 8 we learn that while apocalyptic may seem on the surface to describe the future in detail, in point of fact, it does not. Some details may in the end match up with a precise event, but it would have been impossible to see that in advance," p. 128   From Daniel 6, "How Have Prophecies Been Fulfilled?" "the already fulfilled prophecies demonstrate a pattern of translucence rather than transparency. The intent was apparently not to give specific information about the future," p. 146 "figures of speech abound in the poetry of prophecy. That should suggest that correct understanding of prophetic poetry is often not possible until after the fulfillment," p. 150 "if we grasp the intent of prophecy as primarily prosecution and persuasion, we will not expect it to reveal details of the future," p. 154   Daniel 7, "How Will Prophecies Be Fulfilled?" "because prophecy is poetic, it is inherently ambiguous and in some ways less precise," p. 158 "given the nature of prophecy, we should probably deduce that it offers panorama, not close-up details," p. 163 "prophecy and apocalyptic: it is a stained-glass window, not a crystal ball," p. 184 "the function of the prophets' language was to draw attention to basic ideas about the future, not to reveal precisely what will happen and when it will happen," p. 184   Conclusion "the fundamental question is, does the language of prophecy intend to give us details from which we can preconstruct how the future will unfold?" p. 206 "biblical prophecies were generally not understood before they were fulfilled," p. 199 This perspective has helped me as I struggled with Dan. 9:24-27. It is less helpful with chapter 11 because there are so many corroborated historical details from Dan. 11:2 to 11:35. Daniel 11:36-45 parallel Dan. 7:7-8,11,24-25 and 9:24-27. These seem to fit into Jesus' words in Matthew 24; Mark 13; Luke 21; Paul's words in 1 and 2 Thessalonians; and John's words in the Revelation. However, as the NT authors saw fulfilled OT prophecy only after Jesus' life, these end-time events are not all literal, historical predictions. Only time will tell. But for those last generation of hurting and dying believers, many (but not all) of them may be very literal to encourage them to faith and hope (which is the purpose of all apocalyptic literature). It was actually my Bible translation team in Indonesia who re-introduced me to the Free Bible Commentary series. They described the commentaries like this: “Utley doesn't promote only his own interpretation of a passage. Instead he equips the reader with all the information needed to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of differing opinions, giving you the tools needed to make good interpretive decisions.” My wife, Gale, has been leading two groups of women at our church every week in studying Isaiah 40-66. It used to be that I would find post-it notes on the dining room table with questions for me to answer. Ever since I showed her Bob Utley's commentary, I seldom find post-it notes on the breakfast table. Now, to let Bob Utley help us with the book of Revelation, I would like to read a couple of paragraphs from his Introduction to that book: Most of my adult academic/theological life I have had the presupposition that those who believe the Bible take it "literally" (and that is surely true for historical narrative). However, it has become more and more obvious to me that to take prophecy, poetry, parables, and apocalyptic literature literally is to miss the point of the inspired text. The author's intent, not literalness, is the key to a proper understanding of the Bible. To make the Bible say more [than the original writer intended] (doctrinal specificity) is as dangerous and misleading as to interpret it in such a way as to make it say less than was intended by the original, inspired writer. The focus must be the larger context, the historical setting, and the intention the author expressed in the text itself and in his choice of genre. Genre is a literary contract between the author and the reader. To miss this clue is surely to lead to misinterpretation! The book of Revelation is surely true, but not historical narrative, not meant to be taken literally. The genre itself is screaming this point to us if we will only hear it. This does not mean that it is not inspired, or not true; it is just figurative, cryptic, symbolic, metaphorical, and imaginative. The first century Jews and Christians were familiar with this type of literature, but we are not! The Christian symbolism in The Lord of the Rings or the Chronicles of Narnia might possibly be modern parallels. … These apocalyptic works were never presented orally; they were always written. They are highly structured, literary works. The structure is crucial to a proper interpretation. A major part of the planned structure of the book of Revelation is seven literary units, which parallel each other to some extent (e.g., the seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven bowls). With each cycle the judgment increases: seals, 1/4 destruction; trumpets, 1/3 destruction; bowls, total destruction. Within each literary unit the Second Coming of Christ or some eschatological event occurs: (1) sixth seal, Rev. 6:12-17; (2) seventh trumpet, Rev. 11:15-18; an end-time angel judgment in Rev. 14:14-20; (3) seventh bowl, Rev. 16:17-21 and again in Rev. 19:11-21 and still again in Rev. 22:6-16 (also note the three-fold title for God in Rev. 1:4,8 and Christ in Rev. 1:17,18, "who is, who was, and who is to come," notice the future aspect is left out in Rev. 11:17 and Rev. 16:5 which means the future has come [i.e. second coming]). This shows that the book is not chronologically sequential, but a drama in several acts which foresees the same period of time [expressed] in progressively violent OT judgment motifs (cf. James Blevins, Revelation as Drama and "The Genre of Revelation" in Review and Expositor, Sept. 1980, pp. 393-408). There is so very much more that I could share. The Bible speaks of fire as baptizing in relation to the Holy Spirit, but also as destructive as a tool of God. This occurs in nature, too, particularly natural wildfires that precede a forest's rebirth and growth. Fires can be caused by man for reasons that are both politically negligent and socially irresponsible, making Smokey very upset. Fire can also be seen as consciousness and will. Traditionally, the wand represents the will and air; the chalice or cup represents intuition and water; the sword represents mind and fire; and the pentacle represents the bodily temple or earth. Other traditions assign the wand to fire and sword to air. This wand of association with fire is the direction of will which is itself an expression of fiery consciousness. Fire can be as destructive as it is necessary to creation and life. From Daniel in the den of solar creatures - lions - to the concept of the magi, fire is a driving elemental force. Salamanders are elementals of fire. Commonly referred to as genies, and especially prevalent in Persian belief such as the cults of Zoroastrianism and Mithraism, they provided a framework for the formation of demons in Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Pastor Daniel preaches from Daniel 9:20-27 Jesus Christ, the Greatest Answer to Prayer Daniel 9:20-27 Exegetical Main Point: God answers Daniel’s prayer for mercy and deliverance and sends a helper, Gabriel, to show him what’s to come. Main Point of the Sermon: God answers your prayers because you are dearly loved by him. The greatest answer is Christ. Introduction Many times in my life I’ve prayed for specific things that God closed the door on, only to open a much better door later on. My wife is a perfect example of that! In the waiting, it is so hard to understand why God doesn’t give what we want. But isn’t it true that as we look back we come to see the incredible wisdom of God in his timing? This is a tension God’s people have faced for millennia. Many generations of faithful people have prayed fervently only to see partial answers to their prayers. But history has shown and God’s Word teaches that his ways are higher than our ways. His plan is always bigger, fuller, richer, better. Today is Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week, and the day that the church throughout history has celebrated Jesus’s triumphal entry as king into Jerusalem, as we read earlier. But even that triumphant moment left the disciples wondering at God, as all their hopes and prayers seemed dashed as Jesus hung on a cross later that week. This day is worth celebrating for many reasons. But I want to focus on three today from our text. We’ll see, first, that God answers prayer and that Jesus is the greatest answer to our prayer. We’ll see that Jesus’s coming to Jerusalem to die was prophesied long ago. Finally, we’ll see that the cross, where Jesus was headed, was exactly where he would fulfill all that was promised to Daniel hundreds of years earlier. There is GOOD NEWS for us in this text today! Let’s see. God Context: Daniel’s Prayer If you’ve been tracking with us in this sermon series, you’ll know that Daniel has been exiled with his people in Babylon for right around 70 years as a result of Israel’s sin, and as we heard last week, it is at this point that Daniel has an epiphany moment as he’s reading the prophet Jeremiah (29:1-5), and understands that the exile period of 70 years that Jeremiah prophesied was almost up. This drove Daniel to prayer. What did he pray? [concise] Confession of sin (vs. 16): Daniel confessed his sin and the sins of the people and that God was a righteous judge for punishing them in the way that he had. The covenant promised in Lev. 26:14-45 that faithfulness to God would result in life, but unfaithfulness would result in destruction and exile from the Promised Land. Plea for mercy (v. 19): Though Daniel knew that his people deserved such a judgment, he also knew that God’s judgment had a timeline, 70 years, so Daniel began to plead with God to honor his word according to his merciful character. Because your name is at stake (v. 19): But Daniel’s prayer was not like many of our prayers. At the center of his prayer was a concern for God’s reputation and honor. Daniel understood that as long as Yahweh’s people and place were defamed by the surrounding nations, so was the name of Yahweh. So he called on God to forgive and act for his own name’s sake. This leads us to the second half of chapter 9 starting in verse 20. 20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for the holy hill of my God, 21 while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice. Point 1: God answers prayer Twice Daniel mentions that Gabriel came to him “While [he] was praying”. This is amazing. Daniel doesn’t have to wait. He’s still praying when God gives an answer to his prayer. How? The angel Gabriel, the same angel who had shown up before in Daniel’s vision, shows up in “swift flight”. He was in a hurry to bring God’s answer to Daniel. We’ve said before that the unseen world is just as real as the world we see, where God and his heavenly hosts dwell. And when we pray in faith our prayers move outside the realm of what we see into God’s presence by the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s from that realm that God heard Daniel’s prayer and sent his angel Gabriel to help Daniel. What was his message? Verse 22: 22 He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you insight and understanding. Daniel said, “he made me understand”. Daniel’s prayer was answered partially as Gabriel comes to show Daniel what God was up to. One of the things Gabriel helped Daniel understand was simply that God heard his prayers. But not only heard them, God answered. He acted immediately as a result of his prayers. Vs. 23 “At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, and I have come to tell it to you, for you are greatly loved. “At the beginning” of Daniel’s prayers God began to act. From Daniel’s mouth to God in the heavens, in an instant God begins to work, like a Father who hears his child’s cry and moves quickly to the need. In fact, the very year Daniel made this request was the year Cyrus made a decree that allowed for God’s people to return to Israel. The desolations of Jerusalem were already being brought to an end. Why all this movement in the heavens? Why angels dispatched. Gabriel says, “For you are greatly loved.” Because you are greatly loved! Wow, what a statement. One man out of millions of people and God pays attention to him and loves him greatly. Remember, Daniel is about 80 years old at this point. He’s experienced great pain and loss, forced from his home country, castrated and forced serve his enemies for nearly his entire life, yet God says, you are greatly loved. Friends, your circumstances don’t prove whether God favors you or loves you. Not your health, wealth, or anything else. It’s not even proven by angels showing up for you! What determines God’s love for you is simply your relationship with him. If you are in relationship with God through Christ, then you are greatly loved! In fact, the Apostle John who was called “the disciple whom Jesus loved” wrote several letters to the church in which he addressed its members “beloved”, or greatly loved (Driscoll). Why did the eternal God move and speak a word in the heavens? Why were God’s angels dispatched. Because one of God’s beloved prayed to him. Why can you be sure that God answers your prayers when you call? Because you are greatly loved in Christ. This is one of the clearest pictures in Scripture of God moving in history at the prayers of his people. And dare I say that this scenario is being played out daily, even moment by moment, as God’s people petition him. Even if you don’t see an angel or hear God’s audible voice this doesn’t mean that God is not responding to your prayers. You know, I think we will be surprised when we get to heaven and learn how often our Father dispatched angels to our side in times of need. You have God’s ear! He moves when you call. Transition Yet sometimes the answer to our prayers is different than we expect, like is was for Daniel. Gabriel says, Therefore consider the word and understand the vision.” Let’s see what he showed Daniel. Verse 24: A Savior Prophesied 24 “Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. Even though Daniel perceived rightly that the seventy years of judgment was about to come to an end, there was more to come. There were more trials ahead. More time before the complete salvation. God had a bigger redemption plan than simply bringing Israel out of exile and back to Jerusalem. Yes, God was going to answer Daniel’s prayer for Israel’s salvation, but so much more. Before I say more I need you to know that this section of Scripture is one of the most debated texts in Daniel and perhaps in the Bible. So it’s important to keep in mind what we’ve said before that there are closed handed issues as we interpret Scripture – Jesus is God, Jesus died on behalf of us for our sin – and there are open handed issues as we interpret Scripture – we think this is what this means but there is room for disagreement. “Seventy weeks are decreed. Most scholars understand the 70 weeks or more literally 70 “sevens” to be made up of seventy times seven years, or 490 years, but they apply these years to different periods of time (ESV Study Bible, 1607). I’m going to try to keep this simple here and lay out some interpretive possibilities as well as what I think is clear, and I encourage you, if you want to dig deeper into these numbers and try to get some more questions answered, grab a good study Bible or commentary (I’m happy to share with you some of my favorites) and let me know what you find. [read this] There are three main views: This passage refers to events surrounding Antiochus IV Epiphanies. This is known as the Maccabean view. Verse 25 points to an anointed one who will restore and build Jerusalem. So these interpreters hold that Judas Maccabeus who cleansed the temple in 164 B.C. around the time of the death of Antiochus was the fulfillment of this prophecy. But this view only seems to partially fulfill the purpose of the seventy weeks, such as “put an end to transgression”, “make an end to sin”, and “bring in everlasting righteousness”. Some hold that the seventy sevens or seventy weeks are to be understood figuratively to show completion kind of like Jesus’s command to forgive “70x7 times”. These interpreters point to the connection of “seven” with the “seventy” years of captivity, with the weekly Sabbath (Lev. 23:3), to the feast of weeks (Lev. 23:11-16), to the Sabbath year (Lev. 25:3-4), or to the Jubilee year (Lev. 25:8). So these numbers, therefore, symbolize God’s perfect appointment of time, which leaves no more need for specificity around the dates. Now, there is no doubt in my mind that “seven” is intended to point symbolically to completion. In fact, the seventy years in exile corresponds perfectly to the number of years Israel failed to keep the Sabbath year of rest – 490 years of disobedience divided by 7 is 70 years. So God let the land rest the 70 years Israel had failed to do so while they were exiled. Even though taken figuratively, these “complete” periods of time, most believe, end in the first century A.D. Thirdly, interpreters view the seventy weeks more literally as specific periods of time leading up to specific events around the time of Christ. But the biggest challenge these interpreters face is which dates to start with. Do the dates start with Cyrus in 538 B.C. when he gave permission to the Jews to return and rebuild the temple? If so, 490 years from this date would land us at 48 B.C., a date with little significance. Or was it the decree of Artaxerxes in Ezra 7:12-26, which happened in 458 B.C.? This decree mostly dealt with provisions for the temple but also with magistrates and judges, assuming the rebuilding of the city. 490 years from this date interestingly lands on 33 A.D., which many scholars believe is the date Jesus was crucified and rose again. Or some interpreters believe you should subtract the final week described in verse 27 from the seventy, leaving you still at 26 A.D. around the time of the Jesus’s baptism and the beginning of his ministry. No matter which angle you take, you are still left with some challenging interpretive questions. While I believe there are likely both literal and figurative elements to the times described, what is clear to me is that the time mentioned here is all leading up to the coming of Christ. And this shouldn’t be a surprise. Jesus is the center of history! This is why our calendar is labeled marked B.C – before Christ, and A.D. – in the year of our Lord. The book of Daniel prophesies over and over of one who would come and would crush the serpent and bring restoration to the land and people. We read in Daniel 2 about the little stone who would crush the fourth kingdom and grow to rule and reign over all the earth. We read of the Son of Man in Daniel 7 who was given all the kingdoms of the world, and here we will read about an “anointed one” who will be cut off and bring an end to sin. Church, this prophesy is an amazing description in the Old Testament of the work of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Let’s dive a little deeper and try make sense of how we see Christ so clearly in this text. Christ’s work on the cross Look at verse 24 again with me. “Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. Decreed by who? God. God was showing Daniel that there is a specific time set in history when God would answer Daniel’s prayer. God was answering Daniel’s core issues in what he promises to accomplish. But it was coming in a much different time and way than Daniel expected. Friends, Jesus accomplished everything promised here in verse 24. How? Through his atoning death on the cross. What does that mean? Atoning. Just as Adam’s sin drove him out of God’s presence to the east, Israel’s sin, even mankind’s sin, drives us out of God’s presence and favor into a foreign and deadly place. The penalty of sin is death. The only way for Israel to be brought back into relationship with the source of life was through a sacrifice as instructed by God. An innocent lamb’s blood had to be shed as a substitute for a man. Otherwise, God required the blood of the sinner. In this way, through the sacrifice of the lamb, the penalty was covered or atoned for by the lamb so that God’s wrath could be turned away and the sinner could be brought back into relationship with God. In the same way Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God, who willingly rode into Jerusalem knowing that it was the place of his death, came to atone for Israel’s sins – for my sins, your sins, the sins of the world. At the cross as he died, Jesus shouted, “It is finished”. Jesus “[finished] the transgression, Jesus put an end to sin, and Jesus [atoned] for iniquity” at the cross. Furthermore, were told that God would “bring in everlasting righteousness”. Not only did he cleanse his people from their sin, he made us holy. God doesn’t just see his people as forgiven, but also as clean. He doesn’t see your sin anymore. No, God has clothed you newly in Christ with white garments. We’re also told that God would “seal both vision and prophet”. Again Christ did this by accomplishing and fulfilling all that God promised through his prophets. Further, he would “anoint a most holy place”. Yes, God would provide Israel with a restored place of worship at the rebuilt temple, which we’ll see in a minute, but this vision points to a much greater fulfillment – Jesus’s shed blood cleansed God’s heavenly temple so that heaven and earth could ultimately become one again like Eden. This is what the author of Hebrews describes in chapter 9 when he says: “11 So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come.[e] He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. 12 With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever. 13 Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. 14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds[f] so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus came to earth to die. He cleansed God’s temple on behalf of mankind so that we could enter into his presence again. He came to atone for our sins and prepare the way for the New Jerusalem, where every people, had access to God through him. Friends, Daniel didn’t know it, but Jesus was the fuller answer to his prayers. Friends, Jesus is always the fullest answer to our prayers. If we get more of him, surely, we have everything we need. Let’s continue in verse 25: 25 Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. This is the first of three time periods described, seven sevens, or 49 years. I believe this most likely refers to Artaxerxes decree that Israel could return and rebuild Jerusalem, and that it also refers to Nehemiah, the anointed ruler who headed up that project. Let’s keep going: Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. This is the second of three time periods described, sixty-two sevens, or 434 years. I believe this refers to the time between Nehemiah and Christ. Even though Jerusalem was rebuilt, it was built “in a troubled time”. The city and people faced major persecution and suffering at the hands of the Greeks during that time. If we are right about the dates of these time periods, 49 years plus 434 years leads us to A.D. 26, right around the time scholars believe Jesus was baptized and began his ministry. Then, verse 26 tells us that “after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing.” Jesus’s ministry lasted around three years, leading us to right around 30 A.D., another strong possibility for the date of Christ’s crucifixion. Verse 26 continues: And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed. Even as Daniel’s prayer was answered in a much fuller way than he expected, Jesus’s disciples’ prayers were answered in a surprising and fuller way. The temple would be destroyed. The Messiah didn’t make everything right in the first coming as they expected. Jesus shows us that there is more before the end. Another prince would come. We know from history that the Romans were ruling at the time of Jesus’s death, and that the temple and Jerusalem were destroyed just as Jesus prophesied about 40 years later in 70 A.D. by Titus, a Roman ruler. Gabriel says the city and temple’s end will come with a flood, symbolizing the swift and sudden destruction. Desolations are decreed. Titus also desolates the sanctuary by offering an unclean sacrifice like Antiochus did a century and a half earlier. 27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. This is maybe the most difficult interpretive piece of this text. Verse 27 describes the final period of time, the seventieth seven. We’re told he, presumably Titus, would make a “strong covenant with many” for one week. Titus, in fact, deceived many Jews and put an end to sacrifice when he destroyed the temple. So what’s the other half of the week? Ross and I disagree on this, but I tend to see this entire last week as a longer figurative period of time that refers to the present age – or church age. “Half” of that time was fulfilled partially in 70 A.D. by Titus’s destruction of Jerusalem. Half would be fulfilled in a similar manner by another evil leader who would seek to deceive God’s people. In the second half of verse 27 we learn of another to come “on the wing of abominations” who would make desolate. Again, I believe this points beyond Titus to another Anti-Christ figure. This ruler, coming “on the wing of abominations”, seems to be empowered by the Serpent, Satan. Just as Antiochus and Titus desolated the temple and deceived many, Jesus and Paul foretell another ruler called the abomination of desolation (Mt 24:15; 2 Thess. 2:4) who would seek to deceive God’s people. But again, just as God wiped out Antiochus, Titus, and other desolator’s suddenly through history, the end of verse 27 shows us that God promises to wipe out this final desolator at an appointed time. Which I believe will happen when Jesus returns. When he comes all that he accomplished at the cross will be completely fulfilled. The seventy sevens point to final completion. And Why is God waiting to do this? So that you and me and our children’s children and all the peoples of the earth can put their faith in Christ the King before he comes. His waiting is patience. It’s mercy to us all. YOU If this is confusing to you like it is to me, I need you to hear this: the main point God has for Daniel and for us today in this prophecy is that he has and he will fulfill his promises and bring salvation in Jesus. He has a specific time allotted for all of these events. The one who writes history is revealing the future in his Word, to help us hope in him in the midst of every crazy and unclear situation. Even more, this text teaches us that we have a strong anchor in the midst of every crazy circumstance: we have God’s ear; and if we have his ear than we know that he will answer us and lead us in our time of need. If you are struggling and suffering and doubting God as you wait on him to answer your prayer, I need you to know that the same God who fulfilled his promises to Daniel and the prophets to bring the Savior will surely meet you in your time of need. The answer to your prayer will often be different than you expect. But it will always be good. It will be fuller and richer than you can imagine. Our greatest need is a Savior and God has surely given him to us in Jesus who surprisingly rode into Jerusalem humbly on a donkey as he prepared to die for your sins and mine. If your health is failing, know that in Jesus you will be healed. If your bank accounts are empty, in Jesus you are and will be richly provided for. If you are depressed, in Jesus your joy will be restored. If you are lonely, in Jesus you will find friendship. If you are anxious, in Jesus you will find rest. No matter your need, Christ fills that longing and will fill that longing ultimately in his return. We So as we pray and worship now and during this holy week leading up to easter Sunday let us remember that Christ is the greatest answer to our prayers. So let’s ask God to give us more of Jesus. Because when we see him and know him more, our vision of the future gets clearer and brighter, fuller and richer. If you don’t know Jesus and have that hope I’m talking about, I invite you to turn to him now in simple faith and ask him to save you from your sins. He will surely do it and do far more for you than you could ask or think.

We saw last time the unfulfilled prophecy of the coming Antichrist (11:36-45). From Daniel’s point of view he could not see the gap of time in the ultimate fulfillment of this prophecy. Even from our time this fulfillment is yet in the future at some point. How all the unfulfilled prophecy will play out we cannot know until it occurs. We do know that our world is headed for the very worst of times. Our world is headed for an unprecedented time of trouble. Scripture: Daniel 12

King Nebuchadnezzar learned from Daniel that his God-sent dream of a huge image represented successive kingdoms, beginning with him (Babylon, the head of gold).  The various body parts and metallic substances perfectly symbolized each of the four Gentile kingdoms directly involved with Israel in the period of time known as "The Times of the Gentiles".  From Daniel's time in the Sixth Century B.C., all the kingdoms of the image except Babylon were yet-future; from our time in history, there is only one kingdom represented on the statue (by the feet and toes) that yet awaits fulfillment - that final Gentile kingdom is the subject of this lesson on Daniel 2:41-44. We discuss some very interesting things in this lesson, such as the connection between the ancient Roman Empire and a Revived form of it in the days of the Antichrist (the most dreadful beast this world will have ever seen).  We discuss the push today for A New World Order (by such global think-tanks as the Club of Rome, the Trilateral Commission, the Committe of 300, the Bilderberg Gruop, the European Union), which is why there is such a demand for globalism and a growing disdain for nationalism (nations with border).

Are Christians so individually viewed by God that there is no connection between the sins of our ancestors and us living today? These questions are all in play as we approach a portion of the story from that Old Testament great, Daniel. As Israel had been suffering for their sins for nearly seven full decades, Daniel, a devout and faithful servant of God, did something peculiar. He confessed the sins of his ancestors as if they were his own, and he repented on behalf of generations who went before him. From Daniel’s example we need to consider if our own families, churches, cities or nation might be missing God’s very best for the present hour, simply because nobody has ever owned the sins of our forefathers. Daniel’s honesty, humility and thirst for righteousness compelled him to leave no sinful stone unturned as he went before his God with an unusual, unpopular confession." Partner With Us! Daniel Lewis is a Melbourne-based writer, dad of three and co-founder and editor of The Dad Website. He was born 41 years ago in Edenhope. As his dad was a bank manager he schooled in several locations across country Victoria: Mildura, Nhill, Swan Hill and Wangaratta before settling in Cobram for most of his high school years. At the end of year 12 he had no idea what he wanted to do with himself so he worked at the local dairy factory for 18 months, saving money before taking two years off to backpack around the UK and Europe. During this time he met an Irish girl and after six months back home working with his dad he headed back over to Ireland for 18 months. During this time he completed a diploma of journalism by night course, a qualification he wouldn't use for close to 10 years. He then settled in Melbourne. After spending most of his 20s and early 30s in "party mode" and doing very unstimulating finance work, he went back to school, professional writing and editing at RMIT. The eight-year relationship with the Irish girl ended but he met Tash, the future mother of his children, in 2007.He quit the office job at the start of 2009 while Tash supported him as he wrote his first (and still unpublished, and very clunky) novel and he resumed the RMIT writing course. He started freelance writing too, contributing music and bar reviews to the M Magazine lifestyle supplement ofThe Sunday Age before progressing to feature stories for M, while occasionally contributing elsewhere.2009 was a magical year on many fronts, not because it was a year in which he became a dad for the first time - to Edith, who is now eight. Two other daughters - Avie, now 6, and Bonnie, 4 - followed in a whirlwind four-year period. In 2014, after quite a bit of correspondence with one publisher, he self-published on Amazon a book about the nine-month lead-up to Edith being born and his efforts at being ready mentally for such a change, entitled X Years, 9 Months. In mid-2016 he and two dad mates launched The Dad Website. From Daniel's perspective, the idea for the site came from frustration, anxiety and uncertainty he felt as a dad. Additionally, he'd always wanted to edit and manage his own publication, and his lecturers had always said "write about what you know", so given the immersive nature of parenting, he did. The Dad Website has grown quickly, with a large social following and more than 70 contributors on board from all over the world.Today he works as a copywriter for an ASX-listed company in the city. He still contributes bits and pieces to Fairfax while maintaining The Dad Website and trying to keep his head above water in the parenting stakes. He regularly attends the Important men's Business pub nights with local Flem-Ken dads and, as an avid runner (2 x marathoner), regularly turns out at Maribyrnong Parkrun. He loves his family, mates, running, beer and still wants to write something great one day.

The account of Daniels punishment in the lions den is well know. In this message Pastor Jamie revisits this account and explore how Christians are to respond if the law changes to require of us things that are unbiblical. From Daniel we see a faithfulness in life which is rooted in prayer and we are reminded again that Jesus is our great rescuer already, which is why we are called to be faithful to Him.

Over the past few years Daniel has specialized in helping busy executives and high performers who tend to have a tough time prioritizing their health over their jobs, businesses, careers, and families. And here’s the kicker…he’s figured out how to make the process fun so that it lasts forever. Every week, tens of thousands of people read Daniel’s material to learn how to use psychology, mindset and healthy habits to live a more meaningful life. Welcome Daniel to the show! In this episode, we discuss: -Evolution Eat: how to proactively take control over your lifestyle -Daniel’s food and exercise journey -Developing the right mindset for change -How to set-up a morning routine that powers the rest of your day -And so much more!   Daniel encourages you to jump at new opportunities and overcome natural feelings of hesitation and fear. From Daniel’s experience, he stresses, “It’s often when you lean into that edge that the most extraordinary things occur simply because you don’t know how to predict for them.”   To reach your full potential you cannot neglect your basic needs as Daniel believes, “Your health is baseline.”   A sustainable healthy lifestyle over the long-term is achieved with healthy habits. Daniel has found that, “It’s a skill you develop and practice over time versus a goal that you accomplish.” Ultimately, it is not the end goal that counts but the process you develop to get there as, “Goals are a place to come from not a place to get to.”   For more information on Daniel: Daniel Thomas Hind is the founder of EvolutionEat, a transformational weight loss and lifestyle company designed to help overwhelmed folks solve their eating, food and weight problems.   Over the past few years Daniel has specialized in helping busy executives and high performers who tend to have a tough time prioritizing their health over their jobs, businesses, careers, and families. (Sound familiar?) And here’s the kicker…he’s figured out how to make the process fun so that it lasts forever. “Most people know what’s healthy for them, you don’t need another diet guy on the internet to tell you what to eat,” Daniel says. “When it comes to emotional eating, stress eating and all kinds of habitual overeating, you can’t just give someone a diet and say, ‘Here, good luck!’ There’s a lot more going on under the hood that influences our decision-making, and there’s a key distinction between someone trying a new diet for a few months and fully adopting a lifestyle as a way of being. That’s what I’m here to uncover and teach. Because your health is baseline.” Every week, tens of thousands of people read Daniel’s material to learn how to use psychology, mindset and healthy habits to live a more meaningful life.   Resources discussed on this show: Free Gift: EvolutionEat Starter Pack Evolution Eat Website Evolution Eat Instagram Evolution Eat Twitter Daniel Thomas Hind LinkedIn Email: Daniel@evolutioneat.com   Thanks for listening and subscribing to the podcast! Host Scott Bourne: @ScottBourne Co-Host Rick Sammon: @ricksammon Rick’s website: www.ricksammon.com B&H link: bit.ly/bhphotodeals   Here are the questions that Scott and Rick answer on this episode:   My internal drive is nearly full and I want to run my Lightroom catalog from an external drive. Do you have any tips or recommendations? From Steve, Mary and Todd   LR is turtle slow..time to jump to another program? Is Adobe doing anything about it? From Daniel in Brasil   Also, can you suggest any free or inexpensive one-time cost replacement software for iPhoto? From Steve in Pennsylvania   I am trying to understand why so many cameras come with high-quality video. I think that it makes sense to shoot video on a dedicated video camera and stills on a dedicated stills camera. Am I crazy? From Ted in Seattle, WA   With the advent of such high-quality image stabilization on some cameras and lenses, are tripods as valuable or as necessary as they used to be? From Helen in San Rafael, CA   I would like to photograph race cars at an Indycar event. What shutter speed should I use to freeze the action? From Theron in Washington, D.C.   I hear Scott say you sometimes need to “bump the focus” when photographing birds in flight and trying to get the most out of the autofocus. I think I understand but could you please explain? From Jay in Anchorage, AK   I want to save my photos for uploading to portfolio web sites but all my images are too big and get rejected or take too long to upload. I am new to photography and want to find out what the best practice is for Web image optimization. From Jarred in Ocean Shores, WA   I know that Rick Sammon travels all over the world and I love his portraits of people in their native lands. My question is how do you approach people from other cultures to get permission to make their portrait? I am always too shy to do that. From Jessica in Center Valley, PA   I am photographing by a lake near my home and there are lots of commercial buildings that I do not want to reflect in the lake. Short of learning how to remove these reflections in post, is there something I can do to remove the reflections in-camera? Is that what an ND filter does? From Cathy in Inver Grove Heights, MN   I’ve seen people on camera forums talking about super fast lenses - in the f/1.2 to f/1.8 range. Is it possible to use lenses like this wide open? Wouldn’t the depth-of-field be too narrow to accomplish much? From Butch in Nashville, TN   I want to photograph planes taking off and landing at my local airport. Do I need special permission from anyone to do that? From Alex in Gilbert, AZ   Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) that will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H without our link. The “Are You Being Present?” podcast series welcomes back guest host Daniel Hirtz who joins Paul Kerzner for another thought provoking episode.  The title and topic for podcast 26 is "Awakening to Truth With Presence" and it explores and examines the awakening taking place in society today. Daniel was asked to come back on the podcast because we wanted a chance to interview him in a live interactive format.  The conversation that took place provided the audience with a wealth of valuable and relevant information in regards to the amazing transformation that's currently underway. In the beginning of the podcast Daniel shares his perspectives on presence and explains how important it is not to exclude the body.  Often time, people can get lost in their thoughts excluding the body and all the sensations that exist within it. From Daniel's perspective the body is the miracle, it is the true definition and reflection of presence.  The body is the perfect access point to the 'now' because it is always present; it cannot go into the future or the past. Daniel is a breath work facilitator so he discussed how breathing is a bridge to the present moment.  He explained that by adding breath work to whatever you are currently involved in will provide for greater intimacy and presence in that moment. Later in the podcast Paul addresses the awakening that's currently being experienced by large portions of society.  People are becoming aware of their thought-stream, the importance of being mindful and living in the present moment.  Since there is a lot subjectivity to the life we live Daniel and Paul explore their perceptions of truth and discuss the amazing consciousness shift in the 21st century. We thank Daniel for returning to the podcast and sharing his knowledge, passions and experiences with the audience. The three Hebrew boys hanging out in the fire with Jesus; rescued and called out, clothes not touched, the evil king repents, happy ending! But what happens when there's no happy ending in sight? What about the first deacon, young Stephen, whose powerful ministry was cut short by a hail of stones and his broken lifeless body left on the street? Was his faith any less than Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego? In spite of many false teachings and misunderstandings of scripture; God never promised he would get us out of the fire, but rather through the fire! Sometimes he does; there's a divine healing,a deliverance, supernatural miracles - but more times than not, the world presses in on top of us. Making it out is not where faith is involved; it is found in God's promise that we can make it through the fire (or the stones, or the bad doctor's report, or disease, or the trials and sufferings of this world). Join us for this timely message that discovers hope and peace in the midst of our "fires". From Daniel 3 and Acts 6-7.
