As a former multi-time world champion in cyclocross, Erwin is pretty adept at riding off-road on a dropbar bike. It would be fair to say that gravel racing since the arrival of the UCI into the gravel racing scene, has seen stratospheric growth. Today we're going to be chatting to Erwin about the UCI's plans for gravel racing in 2025 and beyond... What's cooking on Gravel Union website:Armchair Adventure - Across the AndesUltra-distance gravel event riders seem to be a different breed to mere mortals, riding incredible distances in short periods of time and surviving on tiny levels of sleep, unimaginable to ‘normal' riders. But is there a point where the safety of riders is being overlooked in the pursuit of ever greater challenges? When he took part in this year's Across Andes, Mark Livesey was pushed to his absolute limit and wonders whether the spirit of gravel is being lost somewhere out there in the wilderness? Gravel Adventure - Canyon's gravel review of 2024It's that time of year where we all probably start thinking about what the future might bring, but also reviewing how this year went. What went well? What do we need to work on? What shall we just gloss over and pretend never happened? It's not just Joe Public who do this of course, the cycling industry having been doing it too. Canyon sent over their version of a “year in gravel” featuring two of their sponsored riders, former Unbound winner Carolin Schiff and ‘the original gravel privateer” Pete Stetina. We've cherry picked some of the highlights from their year to share with you. Armchair Adventure - Getting cross in Antwerp“Do you fancy going to see one of the rounds of the cyclocross world cup later in the year? We could take our gravel bikes and make a long weekend of it?” As a veteran of numerous CX world cup and world championship viewing weekends over the past twenty years, Olly thought he knew how to make a mixed CX/gravel weekend fun. Despite the fact that only one of his regular gravel riding buddies actually ride or race CX, everyone else were keen televised CX racing fans and jumped at the chance to see it in real life. Plans were made, tickets booked and the #fridaygravelgang were soon on their way to Antwerp. Read on to find out how they got on.

What a fun time we had with an absolute pioneer of gravel racing, Mr. Pete Stetina. He joins us after just wrapping up Unbound Gravel in Emporia Kansas. He shares with us how he manages his wild schedule while helping raise two twins and what he sees happening at the pointy end of the Lifetime race series.
This year's Unbound was one of the most dynamic and exciting in the event's history, featuring two new winners, separate starts for the elite men and women, and a nine-up sprint at the women's finish. Payson caught up with two of the top riders to get the lowdown from inside the men's and women's fields. We also hear from some of the riders across the other categories, from 50-milers to the Unbound XL.Payson and Pete Stetina discuss how the men's race played out, including Lachlan Morton's crowd-pleaser of a win, how Gravel World Champ Matej Mohorič ended up being less of a threat than expected, and why starting separately from the amateurs and elite women actually impacted the race in a big way. Lauren De Crescenzo joins Payson to talk about her ill-fated solo breakaway, why the new rules for the women's race didn't go far enough, and which Grand Prix riders over and under-performed. Pete Stetina grew up in a famous cycling family and became a highly accomplished pro road racer who raced the Giro D'Italia four times, the Tour de France twice and the Vuelta Espana twice. When he started dabbling in gravel racing, in 2019, he was still doing 80 race days a year in the World Tour while winning iconic events like the original recipe Belgian Waffle Ride. That's when he pulled the ripcord on what most cyclists would consider a dream career to pursue new frontiers on the dirt full time. Pete is a big character in the grand story of gravel racing and has animated the many conversations about the present and future of the sport while nabbing top results. Pete has been interviewed and written about ad infinitum and there's a lot more to his story than what you've heard so far and have seen on social media. I caught up with Pete a few days after the first ever Gravel National Championship, which he crashed out of early on. I'm excited to bring this conversation to you. It covers a lot of new ground and I hope it gives you a more dimensionalized look at Pete as a human being, parent and competitor. You can find Pete on Instagram @pstetina. A Fathers Day episode with Pete Stetina and Kiel Reijnen, talking about the balance of fatherhood and sport.
Maghalie and David walk around the expo and question their friends about how they prepare for a race like Unbound. What kind of food they bring? What is the logistics like for the support crew? What kind of special prep goes on for the mechanics? What does the gravel look like? We also assist to the start of the Unbound XL. Hear from: Payson McElveen, Meredith Miller, Haley Smith and Andrew Lesperance, Pete Stetina and his mechanic Wayne, Jeremiah Bishop, Tiffany Cromwell, the Canyon support crews, my friends from Quebec, and way more!
Pete stepped away from the World Tour and planted his flag as a pro's pro, using professional road techniques to highlight speed and results. Gravel is a fluid sport and Pete's come to recognize the importance of some not so tangible aspects of gravel, such as chivalry, a moral code, unwritten rules, and more. As gravel takes a look into the mirror, so do Pete and I as we dive into this conversation. Enjoy! Don't miss out on a chance to start your day better. Back to August 2020. Laurens and Stefan continue their journey. And as we are used to, they are not alone. Former professional cyclist Pete Stetina joins the podcast from America. Since Lau still wants to win Dirty Kanza one day (and Stefan wants to finish it), they're listening to the men and women who know all about this epic race. Stetina and Lau are in this together. From pro on the road to freebooter on gravel, but what is the biggest difference? And what is Pete missing most from the peloton? And what is it like to share a room with Bauke Mollema? You can hear it all in this Coastin' episode. Wasn't it Joop, that said: “The bike the bike, that all I like”. Well, not for us. We cover life on, and off the bike. In the final episode of 2021, Ian catches up with Amity Rockwell, Sarah Sturm, Pete Stetina and Colin Strickland to reflect and look ahead.
Pete Stetina left the world of pro racing to go gravel in 2020, opting for the freedom of a solitary project over the support and constraints of a WorldTour team. Then Covid hit and Stetina, like people the world over, had to adjust. Thus, this season was his first full year of racing gravel. On this podcast, he reflects on the highlights and lowlights of traveling the United States by van, engaging with the cycling world on social media, and how having one mid-race beer proved more popular than winning a big race. Stetina won 15 gravel races in 2021, with 10 one-day or overall wins and 5 stage victories. His season ran from Shasta Gravel on March 6 to Big Sugar on October 23. The 25,000 road miles took a toll on his van and his energy. But after some time off, he's raring to go again. Before we talk to Stetina, we check in with Jim Cotton in England, who gets us up to speed with World Cup cyclocross racing. The weekly VeloNews Podcast brings you inside bike racing, allowing you to hear from athletes, coaches, bike companies, and VeloNews' own team of journalists from around the world. Be sure to subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, Google, or wherever you get your podcasts.
In this episode i'm joined by former Garmin, BMC and Trek pro tour rider Pete Stetina to talk about his recent transition from pro tour racer to gravel privateer. We talk in depth about the state of the booming US gravel race scene and how Pete successfully switched from the pro tour to building his own privateer gravel program. This is a fascinating insight into what it takes to strike out on your own as a gravel pro, building a commercially viable set up from scratch without the support of a pro team. Making things even more challenging Pete achieved all of this during COVID and has still gone on to dominate the US gravel scene so far this season. After two and a half years, Barry-Roubaix, the popular gravel road race out of Hastings, MI, is back! Trevor and Brady give an extensive recap of their Psycho Killer 100 race, and gravel pro, Pete Stetina, shares about his first Barry experience.
Pete Stetina raced in the WorldTour for ten years before transitioning to gravel racing in 2019. During that time, he raced in the Tour De France, the Giro D'Italia, and the Vuelta Espana. Since moving to gravel, he has featured on the podium at many races, including winning the Belgian Waffle Ride during his first year on the gravel scene. More recently, he won the inaugural Leadboat, a two day challenge that combines the Leadville 100 and Steamboat Gravel. In this conversation, he and Payson talk about how he fits into the gravel scene, the work that goes on off the bike now that he's a privateer, and why he's happier now than he was in the WorldTour. They also address the current controversy in gravel racing surrounding the use of male domestiques by some of the top female riders, and how he's hoping to level the playing field at his own race, Stetina's Paydirt next month. He also talks about the crash he suffered in 2015 at the Tour of the Basque Country, which threw his future into doubt and nearly led to a leg amputation. He tells about the four day ordeal of returning to the US after leaving the Spanish hospital, the grueling rehab process, and his triumphant return to the WorldTour that same year.
Pete Stetina and Matt Stephens shoot the breeze about gravel, beer, and Boulder. A former World Tour road racer turned Privateer, Pete is now one of the most successful gravel racers in the world, accrediting the switch to gravel grinding as the best career decision of his life. Find out why he loves it so dearly, and how his passion for craft beer is somewhat complementary to the carnival feeling you only get in the American gravel scene. Having come back from a potentially career-ending injury, Pete's professional focus on returning to health provides a hint toward his ability to suffer, and how that brings him success. There's a stewards inquiry on the Boulder quiz, and if you're wondering what Peter would print with a magic printer, you've come to the right place.
The Blackdog Cast is back after a few months, and in this episode I talk to former Garmin, BMC and Trek pro tour rider Pete Stetina on his recent transition from pro tour racer to gravel privateer. We talk in depth about some of the challenges he faced within the pro peloton including coming back from a career threatening injury and the murky world of rider deals and contracts. Pete also talks in depth about what it's taken for him to strike out on his own to build a privateer gravel racing program in the US during COVID and why every gravel racer needs to fear Belgian breakaway specialist Thomas De Gendt taking up gravel racing!

Bobby Julich and Jens Voigt catch up with former road pro and current gravel maverick Pete Stetina. In this week's episode he updates the boys on everything from rider safety to his favourite tipple. You won't want to miss this one! This episode is a Velonews production in association with Shocked Giraffe. The episode was produced by Mark Payne and edited by Tim Mossa.
After years of being in the biggest road cycling races in the world a devastating and life-altering injury left Pete’s career path felt shaken up and in need of more stability. Growing up in Colorado and now residing in the Tahoe area, the outdoors were the places he felt at home and at peace. That’s when Pete started to explore the idea of leaving the world of road cycling for the up-and-coming gravel scene. It was a place that accepted newcomers, valued community and good beer, but also gave the edge to not just the fastest riders, but the toughest. An unlikely full recovery is what even made this dream of going gravel possible. In today’s episode, we’re hearing a story of endurance, optimism, and the power of betting on yourself.
