In October of last year, over 100 workers represented by five labor unions—including production, distribution, advertising, and accounts receivable staff—walked off the job on an unfair labor practice strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The strike began after the newspaper's management, Block Communications, which is owned by the Block family, cut off health insurance for employees on Oct. 1. As Michael Sainato reports at The Guardian, "The strike is unfolding in a US media industry that has seen widespread layoffs over the past decade with newspapers hit especially hard. Workers at the Post-Gazette have been working without a union contract since March 2017, claiming they haven't received any pay raises in 16 years." Workers are approaching their sixth month on strike, and it has been a long, ugly fight. This past weekend, according to a press release from The Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh, "A Pittsburgh Post-Gazette scab truck driver assaulted two striking workers at a South Side picket line late Saturday night. The unprovoked assault sent one striker to the hospital with a broken jaw, which required surgery. Both workers were stripped of their health insurance by actions of the PG." Shawn surprises Lisa with a brilliant idea for an art world reality show: it seems fabulous because it would challenge the art world collector/gallery/curator/artist hierarchy. Also, Shawn and Dr. Lisa explore Shawn's relationship with his mother for signs of intimacy resistance, since Shawn is single. Why?? More about Shawn HERE: And here: Shawn Wickens (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Mr. Robot, Blue Bloods) is an award-winning comedian and co-founder of NYC's ironically-titled Bad Theater Fest and Bad Film Fest. When not performing in and around New York City he has performed in New Orleans, Baltimore, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Hartford and more. His first comedy album is available on Spotify and iTunes. Episode 152 : Snacks and Stuff Nick and Alex are back. Nick springs a topic on Alex to start. We debate what snack food is the equivalent to the beer you're drinking. We kind of snake draft this one and it's a bit all over the place, but we have good insights. We cover flavored chips, beef jerky, and pretzels to name a few. Please let us know what your beer/snack equivalents are in the comments! Nick plugs the Pittsburgh City Paper's Best Podcast voting! After the opening, Nick re-caps his visit to Two Frays with @pghbeerdouche and @pghbeerdad. Alex talks about Picklesburgh and Little Italy Days. Nick talks about his weekend, hanging out at Lawrenceville Distillery and Old Thunder and the Lukr tap pour. From there he talks about meeting @slimathee and @ewesandbrews and this leads to us discussing Barrel and Flow fest again and being super pumped about the @tavour box. We wrap up this episode with a shout to all our friends and a reminder to be good to each other! Cheers! Ep. 15 - Kim Gordon “Is Art Really All Design Now?”   Very happy to bring you another interview in a different kitchen - this time, the mighty Kim Gordon's (kitchen) (and interview)! I fairly idolized Kim for her presence in Sonic Youth, but I see her more now as an inspiration in how to live a creative life when life keeps getting longer.  I was privileged to attend the opening of her Wreaths show in LA a couple of years ago, not long after Aimee and I were lucky to catch an early live set of Body/Head, right around the time Kim was beginning to write her BOOK, etc., etc., you get the picture.  And I have trouble sticking to a podcast schedule. Anyway, Kim's a legend for good reason, and I thank her for sitting down with us and I'm glad we DIDN'T talk a ton about music, but more about life and her return to her first love, the visual arts. Some links:   An example of the wreath art (that you can *purchase*) on Artsy.com: “Wreath Painting Northampton Blue” 2011   An article in the Pittsburgh City Paper about the Warhol museum exhibit, which, in classic timing for this podcast, as of the moment I'm writing this, literally closed two days ago: “Kim Gordon's Lo-Fi Glamour exhibit at The Andy Warhol Museum is bold, crude, and dangerous”   Great footage of early-ish Sonic Youth (1983), live in Poitiers, Fr., with Kim on vocals.   Letterman performance of “Bull in the Heather”    Free Kitten's “What's Fair” live at CB's in 1994    Body/Head live & P'fork interview, St. Vitus, NYC 2013 (This is the show Aimee and I happened to be at, coincidentally)   And one of my all-time favorite's of Kim's, “Shadow of a Doubt”   Find us: @KimletGordon  @AimeeMann @TedLeo @artofprocesspod @MaxFunHQ
