The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss what a modern back to Hogwarts would look like. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 2:19 Self-stirring cauldrons. Potions class is a staple of Hogwarts, so why should wizards and witches have to stir their own cauldrons? The value of the class is gaining an understanding of what potions do and which ones to use in different situations. It is that knowledge that gave Harry the best help, not actually how to make them. And if you find yourself in a situation in which you need to make a potion, the cauldron is probably going to be self-stirring anyway. · 8:21 A gossip device. The DA uses gold coins to get in touch with all their members, so why wouldn't such a device exist for the public to talk without having to send an owl? Something like the mirrors that Harry and Sirius used to communicate could be a very useful product for the Hogwarts market. · 15:40 Super quills. Even back in Harry's day, there were self-spelling quills. Now, there are quills that could probably do something similar but much better. I could take my quill and ask it to write an essay or draw an advanced diagram without having to touch it once.· 21:59 Safety measures. From classes to quidditch, there is no end ot the number of dangers at Hogwarts. Putting a limit to how close the students can get to dangerous creatures and making sure that the professor is the only one to handle dangerous potions or plants are great ways of making this better. Additionally, putting some kind of safety net for quidditch or making sure bludgers don't kill are also great ways of making it safer. Having anything you want to hear or say? My Wirehaired Pointing Griffon worked the cover 50 yards ahead of me, his bell sounding gently in the warm, opening day of the ruffed grouse season in New Hampshire. We had hiked a mile and a half to get to a section of early successional growth that we had mapped out months before this moment of enjoyment squeezed between meetings on a busy Thursday schedule. My peaceful wait for the silence of his bell was shattered by the sudden eruption of yelping. I sprinted forward through the thick grouse habitat to get to him, my first thought being that he may be caught in a trap, and he could hurt his leg trying to get free. To my greater frustration, my path was intercepted, face to face, by a porcupine. I would love to say this was the first encounter with those needle pigs but I should have added my dog's nickname is “porcospino.” It may be a curse of “versatile” gun dogs, but in his defense, he is usually steady on porcupines. Despite how prepared I felt myself to be for pulling those quills one by one from my dog's face and mouth, this day rocked my worldview.
This week we have a two-for-one episode reviewing two 1700's period pieces set in France - A Little Chaos (2014) and Quills (2000). A Little Chaos was directed by and stars the late and great Alan Rickman alongside Kate Winslet. Quills co-stars a Girl Crush Pod co-star favorite, Joquin Phoenix, and the incredible Geoffrey Rush - both of which received accolades for their performances. We (unexpectedly) enjoyed both of these movies, for different reasons. If you've listened to our show long enough you would know that it's Kenny versus Fred and Ryan when it comes to coffee. Kenny isn't not much of a coffee drinker but those guys can't live without. But I'm sure there are lots of other coffee and bourbon drinkers out there and you see things like "barrel aged" coffee and immediately gravitate towards it. I mean, how could you not? We should be barrel-aging everything! But there are more correlations between coffee and bourbon that I never knew of so that's why we invited Brian Beyke on the show. He's the Director of Coffee for Quills in Louisville and has been all-in on coffee and bourbon for a long time. In this episode, we scratch an itch to ask all the questions about coffee that we've always wanted to know such as the difference in beans from small versus large scale producers, the "rare" coffee scene, buzzwords to watch out for, and Brian gives us the low-down if barrel-aging is a gimmick. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about palette fatigue. How did you find your path into coffee? Do you need to spit coffee while tasting? What notes in coffee are you looking for when tasting? Is there a three-tier system with coffee? What's the difference in the beans that you get versus the big name brands? Is there a "rare" coffee scene? What are the buzzwords in coffee that you need to watch out for? If bourbon is synonymous to Kentucky then what is the coffee equivalent? What's the professional consensus of Keurig? Does roasting line up with toasting or charring of barrels? What's best method for barrel-aging coffee? How do you adapt the coffee for a cold brew or nitro? Is there a secondary market for rare coffee? Is the coffee flavor wheel different than the bourbon flavor wheel? @abandoncoffee @abandonbourbon Support this podcast on Patreon
