Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 17, 2025 is: limerick • LIM-uh-rik • noun A limerick is a humorous rhyming poem of five lines. // My limerick received a prize for the funniest poem at the open mic night. See the entry > Examples: "… the play is silly, purposefully stupid and tough for even [Cole] Escola to categorize: 'If I were to call it a farce or a screwball comedy, I feel like actual scholars of comedy would be like, "There's not a single door slam, you idiot!" I would call it … a dirty limerick,' they joked to Variety earlier this fall." — Rebecca Rubin, Variety, 25 Nov. 2024 Did you know? A limerick is a short, humorous (and frequently bawdy) five-line poem with a rhyme scheme of aabba. While the origins of this type of verse are unknown, some believe that the poem owes its name to a group of poets from Limerick, a port city in west-central Ireland, who wrote such verses. Others point to a parlor game in which players sang the chorus of an old soldiers' song with the phrase "will you come up to Limerick?" and then added impromptu verses. Regardless, a limerick's characteristic rhythm comes from its uses of anapests, metrical feet consisting of two short syllables followed by one long syllable or two unstressed syllables followed by one stressed syllable (as in "unaware"). Hannah Solow is probably one of the funniest people on the planet. She creates hysterical characters on social media, is a stand up comic, and musical theatre performer. In this very funny episode, we dive into specific social media practices, grabbing control of your career, how getting cast in Broadway's hit OH, MARY! came to be, and brilliant gems of stories from being in the industry – including what it was like to tour the country in Daniel Fish's OKLAHOMA!, for instance.  Hannah Solow is currently understudy to Mary Todd Lincoln and Mary's Chaperone/Bill in Oh, Mary!, written by Cole Escola and directed by Sam Pinkleton, at The Lyceum Theatre on Broadway.  She received her BFA in drama from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and has performed everywhere from The Kennedy Center to a hostel in Chinatown. She traveled to over 20 cities across the country performing as “Gertie Cummings” in Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Oklahoma!” directed by Daniel Fish. She performed on Broadway at The Cort Theatre as the “understudy” to Mike Birbiglia in his show, The New One.  For many years she performed weekly at the Upright Citizen's Brigade with musical improv team, Rumpleteaser, and monthly with house sketch teams. It's rare for a piece of theater to become such a cult hit that it moves from downtown to Broadway, but that's exactly what's happening with Cole Escola's ‘Oh, Mary!' For Escola, who previously was best known for their YouTube sketches and collaborations with Amy Sedaris, "it feels like I scored a goal for the home team." Oh, Mary! is an absurd comedic send up on Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham's assassination. "It's about her hopes and dreams of being a cabaret star. It's a very stupid comedy. It's essentially a sitcom." The show has made Escola a bona fide star—they recently attended the Met Gala—something that doesn't sit well with the young playwright and actor, saying that "I don't even want to be minutely known. I don't have the constitution for it." And that's partly because this is all new to them. "This play is the first thing I've ever had produced of my first work. I'm trying to enjoy it, but it is a wild peek into a completely different level and world of the entertainment industry." Considering Oh, Mary! will run on Broadway until September, Escola's got a few months of notoriety to contend with.
