Hi, I'm Amy. I hijacked the GMologist! I solicited a lot of calls from friends & family to get out this feature-length podcast Just a quick thank you to all those that helped me hijack the GMologist's podcast and I wanted to say to each one of you that I could not have done this without your assistance. I encourage each and every one of you to schedule a family/friend game night and even maybe think about being a GM for those persons that are in a rehab, retirement or long term care facility. Thank you very much: Anne Freitas, Arlen Walker (Live From Pellam's Wasteland; https://www.youtube.com/@LivefromPellamsWasteland), Joe Salvador (https://ravengodgames.blogspot.com/), Connie Stump, Joe Jungers, BJ Boyd (Arcane Alienist;https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanealienist) , Jason Connerrly (Nerd's RPG Variety Cast), Joshua Harper (The Hard Light Dynamic; https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joshwuah/hard-light-dynamics-a-cy-borg-zine/description), Vince Cardenas, Jason Hobbs (Hobbs & Friends, Random Screed; https://hobbsnfriends.com/, https://open.spotify.com/show/0yqtTfxYKD1ap7X39InSFa), and all you listeners that I know are calling in now. This episode has quite a title, doesn't it? It's not hyperbole, but you may have to check out Umbramancer's series on YouTube for the complete picture. With luck, and your kindness, the parts in this episode will make sense. SEGMENTS: [one] an exploratory conversation About lethality As a feature versus story as a feature. Eloy Cintron, known on YouTube as Umbramancer, shares his practical application of all of this theory talk to D&D as we explore the metric by which he assessed my ideas on Layers of and Approaches to Play: Dungeon Crawl Mode vs Story Mode in Dungeons & Dragons. This episode is filled to the brim with words. With luck, and your kindness, those words will make sense. SEGMENTS: [1] The episode begins with the promised reply to Che Webster's epic call-in from the previous episode (Exploring the Experience of Play). To hear that message in its entirety, please refer to that episode. It's right at the beginning so you won't have to search for it; just press play and relax. In this episode, a short and directly relevant section of his call is presented for context but that wee snippet o' Che pales in comparison to the full expression of his ideas. Don't cheat yourself. Go back and revel in the full message. The context of the tiny morsel of Che in this episode reveals the semantic nuance of Frames that were obvious to Che but not to me, and the understanding of switching costs in cognition when "multitasking" or alternating between two tasks - an idea upon which we are in full agreement: at least for certain tasks. [2] We then move into what might be the meat or might be the side dish of this meal, practical examples of using understanding of layers to inform how we play. [3] The last main segment of the episode is a recap of ideas I have expressed about a lexicon of useful terms, jargon, and techniques for roleplaying games. Today's episode is a Transition - a shift from one place towards another, the ending of one chapter and the opening of another. In part, this is a reflection upon the journey so far. It's also a reorientation towards what I want for my future with roleplaying games. But the episode is also a sharing, both of my own thoughts and ideas but also those from the community which have gathered over the past few weeks.Big thank you to Hobbs from Random Screed for inspiring this episode and giving me his generous feedback. One of the most overlooked aspects of running a roleplaying games campaign is the question of what you and your players want from such a game. We tend to assume that other people come to the table for the same reasons that we do. We also tend towards diving in head-first to getting a game up and running, keen to play, without considering how we want to the game to feel. There's also a tendency to not consider the outcomes we might seek from a new campaign - and I'm not talking about the inevitable defeat of the Big Bad or returning home victorious from the quest. Over the past few years, I've had many conversations with fellow gamers and thought deeply about what it is that I want to offer at the table. I think these issues are important and ultimately play the largest factor in whether a game can stand the test of time. Inspired by some episodes of Random Screed by Jason Hobbs - a ramble about moderation in setting design and an example from Wasteland Wanderers.
This interview was recorded a little under a month ago and was LOADS of fun to record. Jason Hobbs is the Host and Creator of the Tabletop RPG podcast, Hobbs & Friends, and also host of his personal journal podcast, Random Screed. In addition to podcasting, he has started streaming his tabletop role-playing games on Twitch. He is famed for, among other games, his Kalmatta campaign and a recent foray into playing the RPG Low Fantasy Gaming in the Midlands setting. Hobbs is a regular convention gamer and an all-round good egg, hailing as he does from the American Mid-west.
