A few months ago, I had the honor of appearing on AADYA Geo Talks, the podcast series launched by Bharti Sharma and the organization she founded – AADYA, whose name means “origin” in Hindi. As a geologist and world-traveller, Sharma launched this organization to promote knowledge about planetary and geoscience and create opportunities for collaborative research to address critical global challenges. During the interview, we talked about how I got into science journalism, my podcast series, and my science fiction writing. The interview lasted for more than an hour because she asked great questions about a range of wonderful topics!

A recent study proposes a new model for the evolution of intelligent life, which challenges the long-standing "hard steps" theory that the emergence of intelligent life is an exceedingly rare event due to a series of improbable evolutionary milestones. A team led by postdoctoral researcher Dan Mills from the University of Munich suggests that the development of intelligent life is a natural outcome of planetary evolution. They argue that Earth's environment underwent sequential "windows of habitability," periods when conditions became favorable for complex life to emerge. (Past Drake Award winner Jason Wright is a co-author on the study.) The study emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between astrophysics and geobiology to understand the evolution of life. Join planetary astronomer Franck Marchis in an in-depth discussion with Dr. Mills about why intelligent life may be common and how this could affect our search for life beyond Earth. (Recorded live 24 April 2025.)

The guests today are co-authors of a new paper in Science Advances titled: “A reassessment of the ‘hard-steps' model for the evolution of intelligent life.” Jennifer Macalady is a Professor of Geosciences at the Pennsylvania State University. Her research is focused on microbial ecology and evolution, and interactions between microorganisms and Earth materials like minerals and water through geologic time. Daniel B. Mills is a postdoctoral researcher in the Orsi Geomicrobiology Lab at The University of Munich in Germany. His research focuses on the co-evolutionary history of Earth's surface environment and eukaryotic life—a topic he approaches by studying modern marine organisms and environments. He also applies this research to the ongoing search for exoplanetary biosignatures and technosignatures. Shermer, Mills, and Macalady discuss the Hard Steps model of the evolution of intelligent life, the Drake Equation, the Fermi Paradox, the Great Filter, and the Great Silence. They also cover the Rare Earth hypothesis, major transitions in evolution, the uniqueness of humans, and the search for biosignatures and technosignatures.
We're experimenting and would love to hear from you!In this episode of ‘Discover Daily', we explore groundbreaking developments across finance, international relations, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. We begin with the remarkable story of Minotaur Capital, a Sydney-based hedge fund achieving an 18.7% return through innovative AI-driven investment strategies, showcasing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in financial markets. We then delve into an unprecedented diplomatic dispute between Mexico and Google over the digital renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" for US users, following a recent executive order. This controversy highlights the complex intersection of technology, territorial sovereignty, and international relations in our increasingly digital world. Our main story examines a revolutionary study from Penn State and University of Munich researchers that challenges long-held beliefs about intelligent life in the universe. The research suggests that human-like intelligence might be a natural outcome of planetary evolution rather than a series of improbable events, potentially transforming our approach to the search for extraterrestrial life and our understanding of humanity's place in the cosmos. From Perplexity's Discover Feed:https://www.perplexity.ai/page/ai-hedge-fund-beats-market-eC6zLLp0StGVEtZh79gPTQ https://www.perplexity.ai/page/mexico-threatens-google-over-g-Hv6QT9FuSBOsq342XnaBZw https://www.perplexity.ai/page/model-suggests-intelligent-lif-YwaqBI0KQKufX9kXZKvVrwIntroducing Perplexity Deep Research:https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-perplexity-deep-research Perplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. In this episode, Jonathan and James tackle life's most pressing questions with their usual mix of humor, skepticism, and existential dread. Why do people trust AI to make decisions for them, even when it's clearly wrong? How is it possible that intelligent life should be everywhere in the universe, yet we've found nothing? And in perhaps the most unsettling discovery of the week—Egyptian mummies actually smell amazing. They also go on wild detours about the global chicken census (which James wildly overestimates), reminisce about pandemic-era absurdities, and consider whether aliens are just watching us like a cosmic reality show. Oh, and if you're wondering what a 2 AM walk with a dog and zero signs of human life feels like—it might just be the start of an alien abduction. Come for the thought-provoking discussion, stay for the revelation that maybe—just maybe—you should save a horse and bang a mummy.
Happy New Year! We are back! In this episode Erin asks Pastor Matt about the parallels between the spiritual and physical realms, if there is sleep in heaven, and what kind of life there may be on other planets.

Have you ever wanted to meet someone from a galaxy far, far away to hang out with? Sadly, we haven't found any evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth, but AI has some answers and ideas. It believes we may not have searched enough. Experts say that we've only explored only 4% of the apparent space. One more idea AI suggested is that intelligence is rare. Intelligent life on our planet arrived relatively late on a geological timescale, but why did life take so long to evolve and how have major catastrophic events, such as meteorite impacts, shaped the evolution of complex life? In this episode, Elyse Airey, a biology undergraduate at Queen's College, speaks to Mike Bonsall, Professor of Mathematical Biology and Fellow at St. Peter's College, to learn more about the emergence of complex life on Earth and why life appears to be so rare in the observable universe. Aliens are back on the radar after a US Congressional hearing in the summer that featured former intelligence officer, David Grusch. The US Air Force veteran was once part of a task force created to look into what used to be called UFOs. Mr Grusch gave evidence that caused a sensation in America, claiming that the US military had, for decades, been in possession of crashed UFOs and 'non-human biologics'. His shocking claims were evidence that, whatever their accuracy, both created and reflected a growing and serious debate - from astrophysicists and astrobiologists to policymakers about what if anything, is out there. Anything alive and anything civilised. So, as 2023 turns into 2024, what is the state of our understanding about whether or not we are alone in space? David Aaronovitch explores the history of UFOs stretching back to the 1940s and discusses whether intelligent life exists beyond Earth. When looking at the world around us, from our interpersonal relationships to business enterprises to sociopolitical groups, it often seems that conflict and competition are inevitable. But what if greater harmony and collaboration were possible – and the keys for accessing this higher state of being were already ingrained in each of us? According to Jeddah Mali, our guest in Episode 169 of The MINDSet Game® podcast, tapping into a source called natural intelligence can provide a pathway to greater peace, joy, and lightness, from the individual to the global level. As an internationally recognized visionary and change agent, as well as the creator of the Intelligent Life model and mapping system, Jeddah's body of work provides a completely new approach to understanding human behavior and how individuals positively impact the collective and the wider environment. Jeddah is a TEDx speaker and has been mentoring and consulting for CEOs, as well as advising and guiding global thought leaders and changemakers from over 60 countries, for the last 35 years. She is on the Board of the HeartMath Institute and on the steering committee of the Global Coherence Initiative. In this week's episode, Jeddah discusses the following: The meaning of natural intelligence, which essentially functions like a hidden code that orchestrates the various elements of life to work as one harmonious unit Tips for directing your conscious attention toward the energy of your natural intelligence and tapping into its power in order to bring about greater well-being for yourself, those around you, and the world at large What leaders should know about natural intelligence, and how it can help them to not only build more effective teams, but also leave a broader positive impact 'How to shift the inclination to protect your own interests toward a higher yearning for harmony and collaboration Jeddah then guides us through an exercise to help us harness the power of our own natural intelligence. (Hollywood, CA) On June 13, 2023, the classic American radio show gets a modern twist, as TV, Broadway and Rock stars join forces for the new musical: A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST. Non-profit radio theatre company OPEN-DOOR PLAYHOUSE -- a 501c3 giving voice to new writers and actors -- proudly premieres this show, sponsored in part byShure Audio International and produced by Stage For A New Age (in cooperation with We Make Movies Productions). A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST is the tale of a microphone, a meteorite and true love that transcends time! The story is set in a combination drive in/diner in Sylacauga, Alabama that famously shows the worst sci-fi movies ever made and boasts a small piece of a meteorite that historically fell on Anne Hodges in 1954. When Gabby's best friend Mo brings her Hollywood band The Flutterbyes to town, they plug in a vintage microphone once used by Elvis that mysteriously opens a wormhole in space and transports the cast back in time. Will Gabby learn hidden secrets of her family's past? Will Mo find love at first sight? How will Gabby, Mo and The Flutterbyes find their way back home to 2023? How did real life suddenly become another bad sci-fi movie? Running just under 90 minutes, A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST, is divided into four episodes (with ridiculous commercials) to allow fans to listen wherever and whenever they can.THE CAST:• Comedy greats Dave Foley (KIDS IN THE HALL, NEWS RADIO, YOUNG SHELDON) and Gary Anthony Williams (RENO 911, THE OUTLAW JOHNNY BLACK, BOONDOCKS);• TV bad boy/hearthrob Antonio Jaramillo (MAYANS M.C., SHADES OF BLUE);• Broadway actresses Crissy Guerrero (IN THE HEIGHTS), Kacee Clanton (A NIGHT WITH JANIS) and Maureen Davis (INTO THE WOODS)• LA theatre royalty, Aaron Lyons (PULP SHAKESPEARE);• Newly-infamous all girl, all star sextet THE FLUTTERBYES (Maureen Davis, Sonia Sanchez, Claire Gohst, Paula Keane,Emi Desire, Roni Lee) whose collective concert credits include DICK DALE, BERLIN, VAN HALEN, JOAN JETT, BIG BADVOODOO DADDY, DEKE DICKERSON, JAMES INTVELD and BIG SANDY.A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST was recorded at Studiopolis in Los Angeles by acclaimed voiceover engineerBryan Showalter and veteran voiceover artist and director Richard Malmos. Natasha Yvette Williams is currently originating the role of Sweet Sue in the brand new production of “Some Like It Hot” on Broadway. She gets real as she opens up about why she doesn't consider herself a singer, admitting that she's still a little insecure about her singing, but despite dealing with imposter syndrome, Natasha remains positive by constantly reminding herself that everything is a challenge, a lesson, and a blessing. She also shares where she used to get validation and why all the validation she needs now comes from her. Being a part of “Some Like It Hot”, she continues her goal to develop a great relationship with each and every other cast member and see how it unfolds on stage. Natasha recalls watching Lily Tomlin in “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” which sparked something in her to join the musical theatre, and why she wants to have the same impact on other people whenever she performs. Natasha Yvette Williams is an actress who has starred in Broadway shows, including “The Color Purple”, “A Night with Janice Joplin”, “Waitress”, “Chicago”, “Chicken and Biscuits”, and “Porgy and Bess”. What happens if we think for ourselves, instead of taking things on faith from ancient texts? Peter Blackaby teaches what he calls “humanistic yoga”, based on “modern understandings of neurology, psychology and biomechanics.” This includes "stripping away the culturally specific aspects of yoga that might not be useful or relevant,” such as many of the theories of Indian philosophy. In which case, why call it yoga? Our conversation considers the basis for this, noting overlaps between his ideas and traditional teachings. The search for intelligence beyond Earth has long entranced humans. According to Jon Gertner, a regular contributor to The New York Times Magazine, this search has been defined “by an assumption that extraterrestrials would have developed radio technologies akin to what humans have created.”However, Mr. Gertner writes, “rather than looking for direct calls to Earth, telescopes now sweep the sky, searching billions of frequencies simultaneously, for electronic signals whose origins can't be explained by celestial phenomena.”What scientists are most excited about is the prospect of other planets' civilizations being able to create the same “telltale chemical and electromagnetic signs,” or, as they are now called, “technosignatures.”This story was written by Jon Gertner and recorded by Audm. “So natural intelligence has this ability to bring order when we allow it to. The reason that we don't see it so often in operation in human systems is because we are constantly interrupting those patterns. So that human intervention is constantly getting in the way of and disrupting the natural order. Therefore, every time it tries to express itself or reveal itself, we come in again and we see that most clearly, you know, during the pandemic, here, I think many places around the world, it happened here in the UK that how nature was able to establish itself very, very quickly within a week of the first lockdown. You know, we were seeing dolphins in the Thames.” So says Jeddah Mali, the founder and director of Intelligent Life, which is a model and mapping system for understanding our own lives as well as the larger universe. If it sounds heady that's because it is—but it's also a stunning articulation of collective human values and the ways that we each show up, as well as the gap between how we live, and how we profess to want to live. What Jeddah's map reveals, is the way we can be more conscious in all of our actions, as we move from survival to unity. MORE FROM JEDDAH MALI: Intelligent Life Learn more about your ad choices. Species Unite will be back on June 2nd with a brand new season. Until then, we are re-sharing some of our favorite episodes. This week's is a conversation with Lori Marino. “In a natural setting, these animals would be swimming maybe a hundred miles a day, diving deep. They have their social lives, their social networks, roles to play in very tightly-knit family groups. They raise their children. They have cultures, different ways of doing things in different populations. They can explore and play and come together. None of that is available in the concrete tank. None of it. They don't have any place to go. They don't have any place to dive… what you see is a lot of mortality, a lot of sickness, a lot of behavioral abnormalities. Everything that makes life worth living for a dolphin or whale is absent in marine parks and concrete tanks. None of it is available.” – Lori Marino Lori Marino is a neuroscientist and an expert in animal behavior and intelligence. Much of her work is focused on whales and dolphins. She's currently the president of the Whale Sanctuary Project, which will be a seaside sanctuary for former performing orcas and belugas that have spent their entire lives in concrete tanks. Lori is also the founder and Executive Director of the Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy, an organization that bridges the gap between academic research and on the ground animal advocacy efforts. She has appeared in several films and television programs, including the documentaries Blackfish, Unlocking the Cage, and Long Gone Wild, which is a 2019 documentary that picks up where Black Fish left off, and is also where the Whale Sanctuary Project begins. The Whale Sanctuary Project is going to change the world for the lucky orcas and belugas that will end up there. They will also be a model for future sanctuaries for cetaceans – as we need a ton of them, there are way too many of these animals living in captivity. It stuns me that even after documentaries like Blackfish, people all over the world (including many in the US) still visit marine mammal parks. Mostly, people go because they don't know. They don't know how miserable life is for the whales and dolphins and they don't know how intelligent and emotionally complex these animals are. Keeping them in tanks is cruel, inhumane, unjust, and it needs to stop. Lori has made it her life's work to not only study their intelligence but to advocate and fight for their lives. This conversation is an important one, after listening to Lori, I think it'd be very difficult for anyone to give another dollar to a marine park anywhere on Earth. I hope that you learn as much as I did.
