Something I am so grateful for is the leadership experience I received growing up in the church. From a young age, I got involved in worship teams. I led small groups. I developed skills. I was put on stages I had no business being on. Church wasn't just a weekly service we attended. It was a leadership incubator. L. Michelle Smith has written a new book called Call And Response: 10 Leadership Lessons From the Black Church. In it she discusses how the Black Church has historically developed high level business leaders. The book borrows from culture, neuroscience, and positive psychology to describe the power of the Black Church and why it has produced so many high level leaders . Whether you've grown up in the Black Church or have never even visited, we all have something to learn here. Because if the church stops developing leaders in favor of merely hiring out a professional, performative workforce, we could be in some trouble. This is David Santistevan. You can organize your ministries and keep everyone on your team communicating and aligned around what's going on. As a worship leader, good communication is key to building a strong worship team. You can cultivate relationships while ensuring everyone has what they need to successfully prep for your services. But why not take it up a notch using the chat feature? Built right into the Services mobile app—which, by the way, you should totally download if you haven't already—chat helps you coordinate all the service details with your team. Plus, you can have fun while doing it! No more juggling emails, group texts, and multiple apps to ensure your whole team is aligned. Chat will simplify your communication in one convenient place through the Services mobile app. And everyone can ask questions, request prayer, or join the banter in real-time with one another. The really cool part about chatting with your teams? Team members are dynamically added or removed from conversations as availability changes! So if your original bass player suddenly declines (why is it so hard to find a bass player, anyway?), your newly scheduled bass player is automatically added to the chat conversation. All of your chat conversations stay in sync. No more outdated group threads or irrelevant messages! So what are you waiting for? Download the Services app and start chatting! This powerful Advent message invites us into Mary's extraordinary story from Luke 1, where an ordinary young woman receives an extraordinary calling. We encounter Mary in her humble circumstances—young, unwed, from an insignificant town—yet God chooses her for the most significant role in salvation history. The angel Gabriel's words 'Do not be afraid' echo through her story and into our own lives, challenging us to examine what fears hold us back from saying yes to God's purposes. What makes Mary's response so profound is not that she had no questions or doubts, but that she chose faithful trust despite them. Her simple yet powerful surrender—'Here I am, let it be'—demonstrates that peace comes not from having all the answers, but from aligning our lives with God's design. We're reminded that God doesn't call the equipped; God equips the called. Mary's journey wasn't easy—she faced judgment, difficult travels, and ultimately watched her son's crucifixion—yet her yes changed everything. This Advent, we're confronted with the same question: What would we do if we weren't afraid? What step of faith is God asking us to take? The message challenges us to stop listening to voices of fear and inadequacy, and instead embrace the truth that we are loved, valued, and equipped by God's Spirit to fulfill our calling.
This week we are concluding our series in the book of Acts as Pastor Alex preaches a sermon centered on Acts 28:11-31. In his sermon, Pastor Alex shows us how, like the Apostle Paul, we too must be faithful to proclaim the gospel to the world. Regardless of how others respond to our gospel call, we must remain steadfast, trusting God for the results.

We often speak of our “calling,” but what does that really mean? Mordecai exemplifies the model of where we find our identity, because that is where we will find our favor. We must know the caller before we can know how to respond.=============================Reflection:=============================✅ What would you name as your “calling” other than following Christ?✅ If it's true that humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less, how often do conversations and actions revolve around you? Do you model self-forgetfulness?✅ “What if you were created for such a time as this?” - What does that mean to you, personally?✅ Who is the “caller” in your life, or who consumes your thoughts? In other words, who has your attention?=============================Scripture Reading:=============================

Sermon preached by Dr. B.J. Hutto at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
As we journey through Virgo season and prepare to enter Libra season this September, we find ourselves in a space of discernment and refinement. The universe invites us to listen for the calls that echo through our lives this month, so we can learn to respond with clarity, purpose, and virtue. Before diving into the month's major astrology transits, we begin with a deep dive of the Virgo zodiac sign and archetype. We discover why Virgo wants us to master the art of separation and purification. Drawing inspiration from the myth of Echo and Narcissus, we examine what happens when calls go unanswered or are met with misunderstanding, highlighting the importance of self-awareness and self-refinement before engaging with the world. Through this lens, we explore Virgo's role as the cosmic mediator between the self-focused energy of Leo and the relational focus of Libra. Understanding Virgo is a crucial step in our personal and spiritual evolution. Each celestial event this months presents a unique "calling" — a cosmic invitation we're meant to "respond" to with discernment, adaptability, and insight. Important questions, or callings, are being asked of you: What can you purify in your life? How can you prepare yourself to respond to the calls that matter most? And how do you know the difference between the noise of the world and the true calling of your soul?Themes and transits discussed in this episode include:The symbolism of "call and response" as an overall theme for the monthVirgo's crucial role as the sign between Leo and LibraVirgo as the Maiden and the BirdThe myth of Echo & NarcissusThe New Moon in Virgo (Sept. 2)The Full Moon Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces (Sept. 17)Mars enters Cancer (Sept. 4)Mercury enters Virgo (Sept. 8)Sun enters Libra - Fall Equinox (Sept. 22)Venus enters Scorpio (Sept. 22)Mercury enters Libra (Sept. 26)Uranus turns Retrograde and Pluto Retrograde re-enters Capricorn (Sept. 1)Mercury follows the Sun's footsteps all month longMercury Cazimi in Libra (Sept. 30)Extra Days of Caution (Sept. 15 and 22)Extra Days of Opportunity (Sept. 3, 11, 14, and 29)******************Resources Mentioned in this Episode:Article: The Myth of Echo & Narcissus Article: Speech Acts******************Podcast & Host Links:Clairannoyance InstagramClairannoyance TikTokClairannoyance WebsiteMegan's InstagramMegan's TikTokMegan's WebsiteRyan's InstagramRyan's TikTokRyan's Website

In data as in dating, the proper response can make all the difference. Nonresponse, and the bias it may create, remains a challenge for state staff charged with gathering reliable survey data with generalizable results. That's the call. What's the response? On this episode of A Date with Data, host Amy Bitterman will find out as she sits down with Heather Dunphy, Lead Education Program Specialist from the Arizona Department of Education, and IDC TA specialist Tamara Nimkoff to learn more about the persistent challenge of identifying and analyzing nonresponse bias and some of the tools available to help address it (Hint: Tamara may have written one!).

It's Matthew's version of the call of the first disciples this week. But more than that, we are diving into a theological meditation on what calling means...that it is for all of us, that it is about journey, that "even Jesus" was called, and mentored, and knew what it was to follow. A few short verses, a whole lot of meaning.
