We're toasting the twentieth anniversary of a film about wine, friendship, and love among the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley, California. Directed by Alexander Payne and based on the novel by Rex Pickett, this 2004 hangout/road comedy from Fox Searchlight became a critic's darling, sweeping the “Big Four” critics' awards and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, WGA, and Critic's Choice awards for Payne and co-writer Jim Taylor. The movie also marked breakthrough performances for its entire lead cast: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, and Sandra Oh. The corky, uh, quirky comedy even affected wine sales, causing a spike in pinot noir sales and a dip in merlot sales. But will praise of this film die on the vine with our three hosts, or will we find that it goes down easy despite its vintage? 20 years after the release of the award-winning book, Sideaways, author Rex Pickett reflects on its film adaptation and poignant statement against Merlot producers. Like Miles Raymond, the main character in the book and film, Pickett was an unpublished author living in L.A. and a devoted disciple of Pinot (which he spent hours talking about with Richard Sanford). Listen as he shares how the success of Sideways launched an unexpected journey into the wine world and the creation of a beloved cinema classic. Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streams Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Two hosts. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Sideways is a 2004 American comedy-drama road film directed by Alexander Payne and written by Jim Taylor and Payne. A film adaptation of Rex Pickett's 2004 novel of the same name, Sideways follows two men in their forties, Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti), a depressed teacher and unsuccessful writer, and Jack Cole (Thomas Haden Church), a past-his-prime actor, who take a week-long road trip to Santa Barbara County wine country to celebrate Jack's upcoming wedding. Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen also star as women they encounter during their trip. The Holdovers is a 2023 American comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne, written by David Hemingson, and starring Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. Set in 1970, it follows a curmudgeonly history teacher at a New England boarding school who is forced to chaperone the handful of students with nowhere to go over Christmas break.

It's the age-old question: was the book really better than the movie? For the last however many millennia, the book has been the unrivalled compendium of human knowledge. However, since the turn of the last century, there's been a new kid on the proverbial block: the movie. Today I got to speak to Tom Williams, a film producer based out of LA, whose 25 year film industry tenure has given us a brief window into the glitz, glamour, and (perhaps) practical realities of working in the biz. In this episode we cover a wide range of topics, and have a go at recontextualising the historic chasm between cinema and literature – not a brutal clash of deadly foes, but actually something rather symbiotic. Find some of the books mentioned in the episode below: His favourite book I've never heard of was The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll, Alvaro Mutis (1992) His favourite book from the last 12 months was Seven Empty Houses, Samanta Schweblin (2022) A book he found disappointing was The Archivist by Rex Pickett (2021) The book he would bring to a desert island was Foucault's Pendulum, by Umberto Eco (1988)  The book that changed his mind was The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand (1943) Lit with Charles loves reviews. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode, I have the absolute pleasure of talking to the immensely talented dancer, circus artist, aerialist and teacher Natalie Nicole James, Natalie shares her remarkable journey: from how at an early age she used dance to help her process the trauma of losing her mother, to her escape from domestic violence, and her ensuing fight for justice and a better life. We also discuss Natalie's experience of balancing the demands of career and motherhood, first as an emerging artist of just 18 and then again as an established performer of 35. Please join me as we look a life through a different lens. KEY TAKEAWAYS Natalie used dance as an emotional outlet after losing her mother at a young age, discovering it helped her process trauma. Escaping domestic violence, Natalie moved cities to protect herself and her young daughter, beginning the fight for justice. While pursuing her arts degree, Natalie simultaneously battled housing issues, a legal case, and raising her child alone. Natalie advocates for organisational learning to better support marginalized students with empathy. Returning to perform in her hometown years later, Natalie inspired the next generation, seeing her success. Natalie emphasises that healing takes time, learning to let go of resentment and focus inward is part of the healing process. Having a second child in a secure relationship makes Natalie feel positive but she still recognises that she is evolving in her identity. BEST MOMENTS "I just decided that my daughter's watching me. Like she's pretty close to my age. And so at times when I didn't see a certain value in my own self or life, I would look at her." "You are a woman of iron! You're a woman of, you're a woman of, Mental! You're breath taking courage, honestly." "To have come full circle, actually, you know, to come full circle and to come back and to kind of go, here I am in all my amazing power is so incredible." "I took, I basically, I pursued a case against the council whilst I pursued a case against my daughter's dad, whilst doing my degree, whilst raising my daughter, and I was knackered." "I remember one of my feedback was ‘shouldn't be able to get away with things just because she's talented' this was like one of the teachers. But I'm thinking, and my perception, so this is the perception that I had coming towards me from others." We caught up with Rex in Napa Valley recently to find out what he had up his sleeve and to recapture some of the great moments in the movie. Rex explained the complicated relationship between the author and screen writer and more importantly tells us of the new stuff coming down the pike. I, for one, am anxious to read the next story. This is the fifth episode in Series 2. Rex has done his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). Rex is madly typing away and averaging 2,000 words a day and just hit 50,000 words. He's based at Prophet's Rock near Lake Dunstan. This is, potentially, a controversial episode. It's always dangerous to trade and discuss generalisms, but Rex and Youie push the boat out there to get a discussion going on Rex's and occasionally Youie's take on the differences between living in the USA and in NZ. Rex has been in NZ for five months and has lived in and visited a number of cities around NZ so has formed an early view. The topics covered off include the differences between the people as observed by Rex, his comments on rugby (versus American football), the airports and planes, hotel rooms, food and shopping, driving in NZ, and finally the cost of living, in particular, the cost of rent and living. During this podcast, Rex shares an almost unbelievable story about how the local police responded to his missing surfing board. You've got to hear it to believe it. Rex would love to hear your thoughts on his views, from both sides, an American or a New Zealander. This is the fourth episode in Series 2. Rex has done his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). Rex is madly typing away and averaging 2,000 words a day and just hit 40,000 words. He's based at Prophet's Rock near Lake Dunstan. We're back in Sideways territory in a very strong way. In this episode, Rex allows Youie to put on his best fanboy suit and ask questions about the new book  - still not completed, of course - without any notice to Rex. The ensuing conversation covers off all sorts of questions and points including whether both Miles and Jack make a comeback; whether there any new characters in the book; whether something happened between Miles and Maya in the end; to what extent much of the new book is based on real events in Napier, Featherston, Wellington, Central Otago, Christchurch and Oamaru; whether there are any big comedic moments in the new novel; the trajectory of relationships in this novel between Miles and the other characters; and what's the overall psychological mood of the new novel. Discussions touch on the Cougars of Christchurch and the Tough Guys of Oamaru. Along the way, Rex makes some exclusive revelations on an attempt by others to make a TV series based on Sideways which Rex is clearly still bitter about. Things get a little edgy between Rex and Youie for the first time in the podcasts when discussing this topic. Rex and Youie then talk about the role of the haka and the powhiri and Rex's desire to set a scene in a high school (known as college in New Zealand). Rex and Youie have always welcomed questions to the show but this is the first and possibly last time Rex is inviting ideas and suggestions as to what you'd love to see in the new novel. This is pretty special, so if you are motivated by this, then make sure you send the message to wine@158.co.nz.   Have you got a question to ask Rex about wine, all things Sideways (the books, the movie, the musical, the podcast, or the play)? Hello everyone and welcome to Series 2. There's been a long break between episodes to allow Rex to do his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). We've also given Rex a break as he commences writing Sideways NZ: The Road Back (still a working title) and he's been doing it at a rate of 2,000 words per day. In this new episode to kick of Series 2, Rex talks to Youie about an assortment of topics almost too numerous to mention. He talks about how NZ has changed him, his views of New Zealand compared to the USA, the many examples of honesty he has been witness and party to, the performance of the All Blacks (the NZ Rugby Team), his views on NZ in Winter, his experiences so far on his research trip in the Campervan, his experiences with the bookclubs along the way, but most excitingly of all he reveals a fair bit of the plot of the new book without giving away clues as to the overall story. He's holed up at Prophet's Rock winery with the guesthouse all to himself. There is no doubt that the ideation required to write the new book is definitely in train and Rex continues to throw out some mysterious titbits and teasers about the plot and the characters. A thousand apologies from Rex and I for the back and forth as to what this episode should be titled and what content it should have in it. We started out with best intentions to talk about the wines, wineries, and winemakers of Central Otago but we thought we'd start with talking about the physical make up and the beauty of Central Otago. Rex takes us on a journey through the aspects of Central Otago that make it unique and special for the growing of pinot noir grapes and the making of wine. He talks about the climate, the make-up of the soil, and the incredible talents of two of the people who set up the wine industry in Central Otago, Alan Brady & Rolfe Mills. We then realised we'd reached 20 odd minutes and hadn't even begun to talk about any of the winemakers in any detail, so decided to pivot and keep talking about the physical beauty of Central Otago and Rex shared more anecdotes appropriate to that theme, simply, the fact that Central Otago is BEAUTIFUL! So, forgive us our sins and please look out for the next episode where we definitely will be talking wines, wineries, and winemakers. If you're in Wellington, why not come out and meet Rex? All these questions and many more get answered by Rex. Rex shares with Youie his experience so far at Prophet's Rock, a gorgeous winery at Lake Dunstan in Bendigo near Cromwell, and much more. An example is when Rex and Youie talk about lamb, yes, you know, the animal and the meat. Youie suspects Rex has an inordinate level of interest in lamb and sheep and Rex explains it away. Rex and Youie turn their attentions to the female leads in the book, the movie, the play, and the musical. It's a little confusing but in all mediums it's Maya and Terra, but only in the movie it's Maya and Stephanie. Youie asks Rex why Terra's name was changed to Stephanie and the clue to the answer lies with Sandra Oh, the well-known Korean-Canadian actress who starred in Grey's Anatomy following her break in the movie Sideways. Youie asks Rex about why he came up with the names ‘Maya' and ‘Terra' and then Rex goes onto explain their psychology as characters, again referencing Jung (I don't know about you, but I'm starting to think I need to read all 20 volumes of Jung's work!). Rex then explains how the roles of Maya and Terra were shrunk a little for the movie from the book but then how he chose to expand and deepen their roles in the play and then subsequently the Musical (out soon!). We then deal with our first two questions from our readers, including one that leaves Rex stumped. He actually gets lost for words, for real! Youie wants to know why Rex writes in this episode. The inspiration for this episode is Youie's re-reading of George Orwell's famous essay ‘Why I Write' (you can find the pdf easily on the web). Rex explains his younger days and shares with us at what point in his life he decided to become a writer. He shares the impact DH Lawrence had on his writing and gets deeply personal explaining how the way he was brought up influenced his career. Along the way, we learn about Pickett's Pocket Rockets, his School Principal's unhelpful feedback, birth order, Carl Jung, George Lucas and Star Wars, Joseph Campbell, atheism, agnosticism, and Freud. Youie then shares with Rex the list of reasons why George Orwell wrote according to the list and Rex responds to each in his typically open and honest style. Incredibly, this episode is still related to Sideways but in a more sideways way if that makes sense. Rex discusses with Youie how he needed to replace one of the songs from the Sideways Musical and how it led to one of his female friends providing him with a list of the worst things about men. You will need to prepare yourself for a long list! This list provided the spark for Rex to write the replacement song, Without a Man, and he explains on this episode how he did it. Rex reads out the list and along with Youie they discuss this list with reflections on the characters of Mile and Jack from the Sideways movie and book. Rex seems to be at peace with list whereas it irks Youie a bit more. Rex then invites his male and female listeners, in particular, to write in and share their reactions and thoughts on this long list of male ills. In this episode, Rex delves deeply into the psyche of Miles and Jack. Referencing Carl Jung, Star Wars, and the use of ‘conflict' in the cinema – creating drama, bringing in comedy and then squaring it away with resolution - Rex then discusses both sides of the Miles and Jack coin and reveals on whom these characters are based. The discussion then heads into a chat about introversion and extroversion and the way that these concepts may have influenced the development of the characters. Rex goes deeper into the different functions of introversion and extroversion, namely 'thinking' and 'feeling' explains Miles and Jack's behaviours. Rex then explains the differences in the characters between the book, the movie, the play, and the musical. He shares some of the byplay between him and Alexander Payne, the director of the movie, about the characterisation of Miles and Jack including references to porn and school teaching. Rex then turns the conversation back to Miles and Jack and they interact more deeply with Maya and Terra in the book, the play, and the musical. Towards the end of the conversation, with a bit of prompting from Youie, Rex reveals more about the depth of relationship between Miles and Jack and how the book is able to express it with more nuance than the movie can allow because of its time restrictions. Rex and Youie decide it's time to tackle the 'elephant in the room' which in the world of wine is wine snobbery. This is a tricky topic that Rex neatly guides Youie through. This episode starts off with Rex and Youie working out that their lucky number is 11 and then quickly turns to focusing on sommeliers (including how the word is properly pronounced) and Rex helps demystify their role and defuse any concern that Youie experiences when in the company of a sommelier in a restaurant. Rex is clear that he is not a wine snob and helps deconstruct what snobbery is about and how people become snobs in other areas and then returns to explaining it in the context of wine. He admits that wine lends itself to snobbery but that it needs to be resisted. The talk turns to the original location where Rex had his 'conversion' to Pinot Noir in Santa Monica and a discussion about epicureanism. Rex and Youie then start discussing strategies for buying wine at the restaurant table and how restaurants price their wine and then they finish off on the topic of which country produces the best wine and how would you rank the order of the others particularly when there appears to be a lot of wine snobbery attached to French wine. The word of the podcast is recondite and Rex easily explains what that word means (you'll get the joke if you know what the word means). All in all, a wonderful and varied episode where somehow War & Peace, Fellini's 8 1/2 and James Bond are all discussed in this episode to illustrate the democratisation of access to things that we love and like. Võtame veinikoolis lähema uurimise alla ühe šikima viinamarjade hulgast, Pinot Noiri. Sel teekonnal on Martinile ja Keiule abiks Pinot Noiri austaja, Eesti Sommeljeede Assotsiatsiooni sommeljee Igor Sööt. Pinot Noir kipub olema mari, millest tehtud veine hakatakse hindama ja mõistma, kui ollakse juba arenenud veinitundja. “Sex in the glass” on üks väljendeid, mida selle puhul kasutatakse. Aga alustame ikka algusest - kolm fakti Pinot Noiri kohta: Pinot Noir on üks tähtsamaid vahuveinide tooraineid. Kõige kuulsam neist on šampanja. 38% Champagne piirkonnas kasvavatest viinapuudest on just Pinot Noir. Enamasti on need vahuveinid valged. “Cabernet Sauvignon on loodud jumala poolt, Pinot Noir on loodud saatana poolt.” Mujal maailmas on Pinot Noir enamasti uhkusega sildil. Kasvatatakse lisaks Prantsusmaale veel peamiselt Šveitsis, Luksemburgis, Saksamaal, Austrias, Ungaris, Bulgaarias, Itaalias, Hispaanias (enamasti cava valmistamiseks), Moldaavias, Venemaal, Uus-Meremaal (seal on ta enimkasvatatud punane sort), Austraalias, USAs, Tšiilis, Argentiinas, Lõuna-Aafrika Vabariigis. Pinot Noiriga seostub populaarkultuuris nn Sideways Effect. Have wine scores gotten out of control, with higher numbers across the board? Are we oversimplifying wine when we talk and write about it? Is it possible to determine your wine taste by taking an online quiz that asks you about coffee, tea and other things you consume? And should you trust the algorithm that recommends wine to you based on your quiz results? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Paul K, host of the podcast Wine Talks with Paul K. You can find the wines we discussed at www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Highlights What was Paul surprised to learn about Sideways from his interview with Rex Pickett? How did President Eisenhower inspire Paul’s father’s love for wine? How was Paul’s family connected to The Paris Wine Tasting of 1976? What led Paul’s father to the innovative idea to send wine through the mail? Why did Paul decide to join the family business? Which 15th-century piece of art inspired the Original Wine Club of the Month logo? How does Paul score wine differently? What type of conversations does Paul have on his podcast? Why shouldn’t you use online quizzes to select your wines? What do you miss by relying on algorithms to choose wine for you? How did Paul become fascinated with Burgundy wines? Why are grapes and wine deeply expressive of where they’re from? Which wine gadgets does Paul use and love? What should you be aware of when using a Coravin? Which wine gadgets should you be wary of? Why does Paul believe you shouldn’t try to simplify wine?   Key Takeaways Paul’s right that wine scores have got out of hand, with grade inflation across the board. I like the way he approaches tasting wines - it’s much more grounded for wine drinkers, especially when he factors in the price of the wine. I agree with Paul that there’s something so ethereal, so magical about the grape, among all agricultural products, that it does take you home, that can say this is who we are. To that end, I think there’s been an oversimplification of wine, as he says. It’s worth learning about. We don’t need to make it intimidating, but we do need to acknowledge its wonderful complexity and diversity.   About Paul Kalemkiarian Paul Kalemkiarian is the host of the podcast Wine Talks with Paul K on which he interviews wine industry royalty as well as Michelin starred chefs. Rex has written and directed two independent feature films, California Without End and From Hollywood to Deadwood (Island Pictures).  He wrote the 2000 Academy Award-winning Best Live Action Short My Mother Dreams the Satan’s Disciples in New York. His Sideways sequel Vertical won the Gold Medal for Fiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards in 2012. His Sideways 3 Chile forms the final leg of the trilogy. In 2012, Rex adapted his novel into Sideways: the Play.  He staged four record-breaking runs, first at Ruskin Group Theatre in Santa Monica where it ran for 6 months, then the La Jolla Playhouse, where it broke all attendance records for a non-musical in their 35-year history, with 3-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff directing. In 2017, in collaboration with composer Anthony Adams, Rex turned his attention to the musical version of Sideways.  Two years later the Book for the musical is finished, half the songs are composed and recorded, and a 3-time Tony Award-winning musical theater director (to be announced soon) has come on board.  There is every likelihood that the “workshop” (or premiere) production will happen in the latter part of 2020. Rex grew up in southern California, matriculated from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD).  He was a Special Projects major, specializing in literary and film criticism, and creative writing.  A member of the Writers Guild of America, the Dramatists Guild, and now ASCAP, Rex has enjoyed success in long-form fiction, screenwriting, independent film, and now stage.  The Rex Pickett Papers are now enshrined at his alma mater UCSD in Geisel Library’s Special Collections & Archives.     To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the https://www.nataliemaclean.com/85.

It really can be very difficult, if not impossible to predict just how bountiful a particular vintage is likely to be this early in the year, but Host David Wilson likes to think he has his finger on the pulse and is looking at a few subtle clues to help him make a long-shot prediction for the 2020 vintage. One thing is certain; the past decade has produced more than its fair share of bumper crops, and while that might seem like an awesome thing, it does make it hard for grape growers because too much juice can lower both prices and demand. For most wine consumers, where all that wine juice winds up may be something of a mystery… and that is completely understandable given the fact that the grapes harvested off of a single vineyard could end up in several different wines of significantly varying quality and price. That’s a very good reason to listen to this week’s edition of Grape Encounters Radio. That’s what you’ll hear in the first half of the show. In the second half, David will share an increasingly popular way to ferment and age wine that isn’t on most people’s radar: amphoras and concrete tanks. In a way, it’s a case of high tech getting low tech, and the result is some pretty awesome wines where the grapes express themselves in new and exciting ways. The show concludes with a news item related to the wine cult film classic Sideways. Well, actually, it’s not really about the film but rather a full-emersion Off-Broadway stage play being produced by Rex Pickett, the author of the book that led to the film. There’s just one peculiar thing about this food, wine and entertainment event that has David scratching his head. Odds are, so will you! This week’s edition of Grape Encounters Radio is brought to you buy your ultimate wine retail resource; Total Wine & More. Total Wine has been David’s hands-down favorite brick and mortar wine shopping experience for more than a dozen years, but they also have plenty for those of you who love to shop, learn and explore from your computer or personal device. (This week CWC is off due to a live Golden State Warriors basketball game on our home station KSRO in Santa Rosa. For the podcast, here is a reprise of our  Aug. 9, 2017 show featuring Rex Pickett, author of Sideways, and Trevor Durling, winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard.) Today’s pre-show guest is Rex Pickett, author of Sideways. The main show guest is Trevor Durling, Winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard. In the live segment before CWC begins at the top of the hour, Steve and Dan visit with Rex Pickett, author of Sideways, the book, movie and now stage play. Then after the main show, we will hear more of Steve’s interview with Rex Pickett. First, Dan tells that somebody called him on the telephone way back in the ‘90s when he was writing at the LA Times, to ask him about Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez, the area where the book is set. Dan never got his name, and after the movie came out, Dan always assumed the call had come from Rex, but Rex says he wasn’t the caller. (The stage adaptation played at the Left Edge Theater in Santa Rosa at the Luther Burbank Center in Aug. 2017.) The movie Sideways was not really about Merlot, it was more about Pinot Noir, or people, really. The situation of the market for Merlot changed as a consequence of the movie. The book was about Pinot Noir, not about Merlot. Dan says that Rex put his finger on the pulse of the industry at the time, what people were talking about in the industry then, which was that Pinot Noir was starting to take off in the US and particularly in cooler regions, Santa Barbara and Sonoma Counties in particular. But it was a book about personalities and people, and only incidentally about wine. In Dan’s opinion, it was a great book and movie but it really tapped into something that was more wine-related than what Rex was hoping for. Rex tells that he was starting to go to wine tastings and loved the lyricism and poetry about describing wine, (apart from some pretentiousness). Rex didn’t know that the wine tasting scene would become so important in the movie. Merlot had been “overcropped” at the time and the movie thinned out the herd, as a lot of poor Merlot producers no longer make it. They agree that the movie did a lot for Pinot Noir and at that time we were starting to get away from the routine Cabernet-Chardonnay and into other wines and Pinot Noir was the one that first broke through, and that the movie picked up on that momentary market trend. Dan points out that in 1992 California had 8,000 acres of Merlot. In 1995, there were 58,000 acres of Merlot. Rex says they were mechanized-farming it and Steve says it just wasn’t that good. Dan says there is good Merlot all over the place now but you have to be very careful what you buy because we’re down to about 29,000 arcres now, which is way too much, and planted in the wrong places. Steve tells that his friend Jim from BV is there and he talks about when they were in DC, in April. Jim was there, he started singing and Steve was playing piano. Later we will hear a musical excerpt. At the intro to the main show, Steve re-introduces Rex Pickett, author of the book, screenplay and the new stage adaptation of Sideways). Dan introduces Trevor Durling, winemaker at BV, which has been around since 1900. It was the home of the great André Tchelistcheff, starting in the 1930s up to around 1973. The BV style of the wines had been formed and it’s not easy to shift. It’s like turning an ocean liner. The problem always had been to use French oak versus American oak. BV started using American oak, for Cabernet. The fact is that BV didn’t make certain grapes that had become popular, such as Zinfandel. Dan talked to André about that and André said he would not know how to make Zinfandel, as he didn’t know it. BV is a historic property and makes more varieties now. The flagship is still the BV Private Reserve. Trevor tells that was born and raised in Santa Rosa and had wine at the dinner table from...

‘Sideways' was an enjoyable script to discuss, because it is a comedy with many tragic elements that always stays rooted in reality and its flawed characters. Based on the novel by Rex Pickett and adapted for the screen by director Alexander Payne and writer Jim Taylor, it's a tale of debauchery, adventure, love and friendship set in California's Santa Barbara wine valley. *** Want to comment, get news and join episode discussions? Two shows hit North Bay stages whose titles audiences may recognize from their somewhat better-known film adaptations. First up is Santa Rosa’s Left Edge Theatre’s presentation of Sideways, author Rex Pickett’s re-working of his 2004 novel which was adapted by filmmaker Alexander Payne into the multi award-winning film. Adapting Pickett’s tale of a weeklong road trip/bachelor party through Central California wine country to a small, intimate stage would seem to be a bit of a challenge, but director/set designer Argo Thompson and his Left Edge team – in collaboration with Pickett – make it work. It’s well cast with Ron Severdia as Miles, a frustrated, unpublished author who’s sunk so low as to steal money from his mother to pay the rent and Chris Ginesi as Jack, Miles’ best friend and groom-to-be who’s a whirling dervish of positivity and testosterone. Jack sees the trip as his last chance to score before settling down. Miles just wants to get out of LA and escape into his own viticulturally-devised world. Their plans go a bit awry after meeting a couple of tasting room managers. Maya (Maureen O’Neill) seems to have an interest in Miles while Terra (Jazmine Pierce) has Jack thinking his upcoming nuptials may be a mistake. If you know the film or novel, then you know the play. If you’re wondering how a story set in so many places can be fit onto a small stage, Thompson has designed a multi-functional set that easily transforms from a dingy apartment bathroom to a classy tasting room to a cheap motel room to a restaurant dining room, and all with minimal transition time. Which is good, because the show feels a bit long. The pace should pick up a bit as the run gets rolling but the show could be streamlined a bit. Pickett has retained all the best scenes and lines of dialogue and there are plenty of laughs, but some scenes ran on and others seemed extraneous or repetitive. Payne changed the ending a bit in his Oscar-winning film script, but the play retains Pickett’s original conclusion. I think Payne was right. The ending as written seems a bit too pat with everything tidily wrapped up with a tone that is very different from the rest of the story. Ah, but the rest of the story is so well done with the cast doing wonders with Pickett’s characters. Severdia and Ginesi are excellent in capturing the essence of male friendship and fraternal love when you can go from hugging your best friend one minute to punching him in the mouth in the next. O’Neill is quite effective as a weary divorcee whose scabs from marital wounds are picked fresh by Miles’ and Jack’s behaviors. Pierce does well as a free spirit who does not respond well to Jack’s machinations. Even the ensemble (Kimberly Kalember, Angela Squire and Mark Bradbury) get their moments as they take on all the other characters whose paths Jack and Miles cross from Miles’s mom to an effete tasting room manager. One needn’t be a student of oenology to enjoy the Left Edge Theatre production of Sideways, but a glass or two of the stuff in the lobby beforehand (and at intermission) wouldn’t hurt – just don’t try to match the amount of drinking that seems to be going on on-stage. In the vernacular of the Sommelier, it’s a full-bodied show that induces sufficient laughter to allow for proper aeration of its complex properties. This critic found Sideways well-balanced with just the right blend of humor and heart but with a finish that’s just slightly off. Sideways plays through October 1st at Santa Rosa’s Left Edge Theatre in the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 8 pm, Sunday at 2pm.
