Today's pre-show guest is Rex Pickett, author of Sideways. The main show guest is Trevor Durling, Winemaker from BV, Beaulieu Vineyard. This show was recorded on August 9, 2017 eight years ago. Due to a technical glitch, there is no recording of the live show recorded today, August 1, 2025. So for our podcast listeners, we offer this jewel of a Highlight show, in its place. Enjoy! In the live segment before CWC begins at the top of the hour, Steve and Dan visit with Rex Pickett, author of Sideways, the book, movie and now stage play. Then after the main show, we will hear more of Steve's interview with Rex Pickett. Rex Pickett, author of Sideways. First, Dan tells that somebody called him on the telephone way back in the ‘90s when he was writing at the LA Times, to ask him about Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez, the area where the book is set. Dan never got his name, and after the movie came out, Dan always assumed the call had come from Rex, but Rex says he wasn't the caller. The movie Sideways was not really about Merlot, it was more about Pinot Noir, or people, really. The situation of the market for Merlot changed as a consequence of the movie. The book was about Pinot Noir, not about Merlot. Dan says that Rex put his finger on the pulse of the industry at the time, what people were talking about in the industry then, which was that Pinot Noir was starting to take off in the US and particularly in cooler regions, Santa Barbara and Sonoma Counties in particular. A story about people, that happened to have wine in it. But it was a book about personalities and people, and only incidentally about wine. In Dan's opinion, it was a great book and movie but it really tapped into something that was more wine-related than what Rex was hoping for. Rex tells that he was starting to go to wine tastings and loved the lyricism and poetry about describing wine, (apart from some pretentiousness). Rex didn't know that the wine tasting scene would become so important in the movie. Merlot and the Cinema Merlot had been “overcropped” at the time and the movie thinned out the herd, as a lot of poor Merlot producers no longer make it. They agree that the movie did a lot for Pinot Noir and at that time we were starting to get away from the routine Cabernet-Chardonnay and into other wines and Pinot Noir was the one that first broke through, and that the movie picked up on that momentary market trend. Dan points out that in 1992 California had 8,000 acres of Merlot. In 1995, there were 58,000 acres of Merlot. Rex says they were mechanized-farming it and Steve says it just wasn't that good. Dan says there is good Merlot all over the place now but you have to be very careful what you buy because we're down to about 29,000 arcres now, which is way too much, and planted in the wrong places. Steve tells that his friend Jim from BV is there and he talks about when they were in DC, in April. Jim was there, he started singing and Steve was playing piano. Later we will hear a musical excerpt. At the intro to the main show, Steve re-introduces Rex Pickett, author of the book, screenplay and the new stage adaptation of Sideways which will be on stage in Santa Rosa from September 8 through October 1 (2017). Dan introduces Trevor Durling, winemaker at BV, which has been around since 1900. It was the home of the great André Tchelistcheff, starting in the 1930s up to around 1973. The BV style of the wines had been formed and it's not easy to shift. It's like turning an ocean liner. The problem always had been to use French oak versus American oak. BV started using American oak, for Cabernet. The fact is that BV didn't make certain grapes that had become popular, such as Zinfandel. Dan talked to André about that and André said he would not know how to make Zinfandel, as he didn't know it. Beaulieu Vineyards BV is a historic property and makes more varieties now. The flagship is still the BV Private Reserve.

We're toasting the twentieth anniversary of a film about wine, friendship, and love among the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley, California. Directed by Alexander Payne and based on the novel by Rex Pickett, this 2004 hangout/road comedy from Fox Searchlight became a critic's darling, sweeping the “Big Four” critics' awards and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, WGA, and Critic's Choice awards for Payne and co-writer Jim Taylor. The movie also marked breakthrough performances for its entire lead cast: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, and Sandra Oh. The corky, uh, quirky comedy even affected wine sales, causing a spike in pinot noir sales and a dip in merlot sales. But will praise of this film die on the vine with our three hosts, or will we find that it goes down easy despite its vintage? Join us as we give you the straight story on Sideways! 20 years after the release of the award-winning book, Sideaways, author Rex Pickett reflects on its film adaptation and poignant statement against Merlot producers. Like Miles Raymond, the main character in the book and film, Pickett was an unpublished author living in L.A. and a devoted disciple of Pinot (which he spent hours talking about with Richard Sanford). Listen as he shares how the success of Sideways launched an unexpected journey into the wine world and the creation of a beloved cinema classic. And before you ask: No Merlot was consumed in the making of this episode. Shop Pickett's new release, Sideways: New Zealand, and the complete Sideways collection here. Cade and Diane discuss two films starring Paul Giamatti and directed by Alexander Payne: Sideways (2004) and The Holdovers (2023). Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streams Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Two hosts. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Sideways is a 2004 American comedy-drama road film directed by Alexander Payne and written by Jim Taylor and Payne. A film adaptation of Rex Pickett's 2004 novel of the same name, Sideways follows two men in their forties, Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti), a depressed teacher and unsuccessful writer, and Jack Cole (Thomas Haden Church), a past-his-prime actor, who take a week-long road trip to Santa Barbara County wine country to celebrate Jack's upcoming wedding. Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen also star as women they encounter during their trip. The Holdovers is a 2023 American comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne, written by David Hemingson, and starring Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. Set in 1970, it follows a curmudgeonly history teacher at a New England boarding school who is forced to chaperone the handful of students with nowhere to go over Christmas break.
It's the age-old question: was the book really better than the movie? For the last however many millennia, the book has been the unrivalled compendium of human knowledge. However, since the turn of the last century, there's been a new kid on the proverbial block: the movie. Today I got to speak to Tom Williams, a film producer based out of LA, whose 25 year film industry tenure has given us a brief window into the glitz, glamour, and (perhaps) practical realities of working in the biz. In this episode we cover a wide range of topics, and have a go at recontextualising the historic chasm between cinema and literature – not a brutal clash of deadly foes, but actually something rather symbiotic. Find some of the books mentioned in the episode below: His favourite book I've never heard of was The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll, Alvaro Mutis (1992) His favourite book from the last 12 months was Seven Empty Houses, Samanta Schweblin (2022) A book he found disappointing was The Archivist by Rex Pickett (2021) The book he would bring to a desert island was Foucault's Pendulum, by Umberto Eco (1988) The book that changed his mind was The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand (1943) Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading!
Gas up the Saab, load the trunk with Pinot Noir, and prepare your mental thesaurus of olfactory terminology. This is the hero's journey of Sideways. Hosted by writers Jeff Garvin and Dan Zarzana.
On this week's episode of Excelsior Journeys, host George Sirois sits down with accomplished novelist / screenwriter / director / playwright Rex Pickett! 20 years after the release of his novel Sideways, which introduced the world to the antics of Miles and Jack, Rex is preparing for the launch of the hardcover edition of the noel in true fashion: two different signings with plenty of wine amongst them. Wine Talks first sat with Rex in 2021 as he was pondering a Sideways musical. In just a few years, the musical is touring Spain to sold-out crowds and he is holding Sideways concerts in Napa Valley. We caught up with Rex in Napa Valley recently to find out what he had up his sleeve and to recapture some of the great moments in the movie. Rex explained the complicated relationship between the author and screen writer and more importantly tells us of the new stuff coming down the pike. I, for one, am anxious to read the next story. Have a listen.

This is the fifth episode in Series 2. Rex has done his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). Rex is madly typing away and averaging 2,000 words a day and just hit 50,000 words. He's based at Prophet's Rock near Lake Dunstan. This is, potentially, a controversial episode. It's always dangerous to trade and discuss generalisms, but Rex and Youie push the boat out there to get a discussion going on Rex's and occasionally Youie's take on the differences between living in the USA and in NZ. Rex has been in NZ for five months and has lived in and visited a number of cities around NZ so has formed an early view. The topics covered off include the differences between the people as observed by Rex, his comments on rugby (versus American football), the airports and planes, hotel rooms, food and shopping, driving in NZ, and finally the cost of living, in particular, the cost of rent and living. During this podcast, Rex shares an almost unbelievable story about how the local police responded to his missing surfing board. You've got to hear it to believe it. Rex would love to hear your thoughts on his views, from both sides, an American or a New Zealander. Have you got a question to ask Rex about wine, all things Sideways (the books, the movie, the musical, the podcast, or the play)? Then please write to him on wine@158.co.nz. You'll get your question read out and you'll be famous for 15 seconds. If you're in Auckland in October 2022, why not come out and meet Rex? He'll be at Winetopia on Friday October 28 and Saturday October 29 at Shed 10 in Auckland. Check out the details on (https://www.winetopia.co.nz/auckland-2022) . Come along and taste the range of Sideways wines too! We'd love to see you there and Rex would love it if you were there to talk movies, books, and anything else. Why not subscribe to the podcast? This is the fourth episode in Series 2. Rex has done his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). Rex is madly typing away and averaging 2,000 words a day and just hit 40,000 words. He's based at Prophet's Rock near Lake Dunstan. We're back in Sideways territory in a very strong way. In this episode, Rex allows Youie to put on his best fanboy suit and ask questions about the new book - still not completed, of course - without any notice to Rex. The ensuing conversation covers off all sorts of questions and points including whether both Miles and Jack make a comeback; whether there any new characters in the book; whether something happened between Miles and Maya in the end; to what extent much of the new book is based on real events in Napier, Featherston, Wellington, Central Otago, Christchurch and Oamaru; whether there are any big comedic moments in the new novel; the trajectory of relationships in this novel between Miles and the other characters; and what's the overall psychological mood of the new novel. Discussions touch on the Cougars of Christchurch and the Tough Guys of Oamaru. Along the way, Rex makes some exclusive revelations on an attempt by others to make a TV series based on Sideways which Rex is clearly still bitter about. Things get a little edgy between Rex and Youie for the first time in the podcasts when discussing this topic. Rex and Youie then talk about the role of the haka and the powhiri and Rex's desire to set a scene in a high school (known as college in New Zealand). Rex and Youie have always welcomed questions to the show but this is the first and possibly last time Rex is inviting ideas and suggestions as to what you'd love to see in the new novel. This is pretty special, so if you are motivated by this, then make sure you send the message to wine@158.co.nz. Have you got a question to ask Rex about wine, all things Sideways (the books, the movie, the musical, the podcast, or the play)? Then please write to him on wine@158.co.nz. This is the third episode in Series 2. Rex has done his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). Rex is madly typing away and averaging 2,000 words a day and just hit 35,000 words. He's based at Prophet's Rock near Lake Dunstan. This is a 'sideways' movement to the left where we talk to Rex about his latest novel 'The Archivist' (get it now online or ask for it at your favourite bookstore). Rex talks to Youie about how the plot and storyline on the book, how it's based on real events and set in a real library (the Geisel in San Diego), his views on reading and its possible decline, the reaction he's received to the book, a random comment about cheesecake (!), and most interestingly, the recent well timed release of the book onto American politics. The AOTUS (The Archivist of the United States) even gets a mention. So, listen this podcast and then buy and read the book or buy and read the book and then listen to the podcast, you choose. This is the second episode in Series 2. Rex has done his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). Rex is madly typing away and averaging 2,000 words a day! He's now based at Prophet's Rock near Lake Dunstan. In this second half episode to Part 1 released last week, Rex continues to talk to Youie about an assortment of topics and in this half of the discussion, we talk about independent book stores, a book club on Mt. Pleasant, book signings, some dramatic journeys Rex has had in NZ, smuggling drugs, lots about Featherston and the Booktown concept, Emma Patene, some important news about Jack (!), Rex's views on Ben Hurley - a well known NZ comedian, Christchurch Winetopia, some big news on the new book, Sideways NZ, and finally the word of the podcast 'pulchritude'. From here, we should be able to get out a new podcast slightly more frequently than 1 a week. Hello everyone and welcome to Series 2. There's been a long break between episodes to allow Rex to do his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). We've also given Rex a break as he commences writing Sideways NZ: The Road Back (still a working title) and he's been doing it at a rate of 2,000 words per day. In this new episode to kick of Series 2, Rex talks to Youie about an assortment of topics almost too numerous to mention. He talks about how NZ has changed him, his views of New Zealand compared to the USA, the many examples of honesty he has been witness and party to, the performance of the All Blacks (the NZ Rugby Team), his views on NZ in Winter, his experiences so far on his research trip in the Campervan, his experiences with the bookclubs along the way, but most excitingly of all he reveals a fair bit of the plot of the new book without giving away clues as to the overall story. And the best thing is it's only half the recording! Look out for Part 2 very soon. If you're in Auckland, why not come out and meet Rex? You will know by now that Rex Pickett, author of the book 'Sideways' on which the Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe winning movie was based, is in New Zealand writing Sideways NZ: The Road Back - note the subtle change in the name of the new book. He's holed up at Prophet's Rock winery with the guesthouse all to himself. There is no doubt that the ideation required to write the new book is definitely in train and Rex continues to throw out some mysterious titbits and teasers about the plot and the characters. The conversation covers so many topics that it's impossible to summarise in this episode's description. We promise to do a better job for the next episode. If you're in Wellington, why not come out and meet Rex? He'll be at Winetopia on Friday July 1 and Saturday July 2 at the TSB arena in downtown Wellington. Come along and taste the range of Sideways wines too! We'd love to see you there and Rex would love it if you were there too to talk movies, books, and anything else. A thousand apologies from Rex and I for the back and forth as to what this episode should be titled and what content it should have in it. We started out with best intentions to talk about the wines, wineries, and winemakers of Central Otago but we thought we'd start with talking about the physical make up and the beauty of Central Otago. Rex takes us on a journey through the aspects of Central Otago that make it unique and special for the growing of pinot noir grapes and the making of wine. He talks about the climate, the make-up of the soil, and the incredible talents of two of the people who set up the wine industry in Central Otago, Alan Brady & Rolfe Mills. We then realised we'd reached 20 odd minutes and hadn't even begun to talk about any of the winemakers in any detail, so decided to pivot and keep talking about the physical beauty of Central Otago and Rex shared more anecdotes appropriate to that theme, simply, the fact that Central Otago is BEAUTIFUL! So, forgive us our sins and please look out for the next episode where we definitely will be talking wines, wineries, and winemakers. If you're in Wellington, why not come out and meet Rex? He'll be at Winetopia on Friday July 1 and Saturday July 2 at the TSB arena in downtown Wellington. Come along and taste the range of Sideways wines too! Includes an interview with Alien 3 screenwriter Rex Pickett. Presented by Corporal Hicks and RidgeTop.
Rex is in New Zealand writing Sideways New Zealand! What's he been up to after his first few days? Who is he hanging with? What's he been doing? What's he think of Central Otago and the region? All these questions and many more get answered by Rex. Rex shares with Youie his experience so far at Prophet's Rock, a gorgeous winery at Lake Dunstan in Bendigo near Cromwell, and much more. An example is when Rex and Youie talk about lamb, yes, you know, the animal and the meat. Youie suspects Rex has an inordinate level of interest in lamb and sheep and Rex explains it away. The biggest news is that Rex has started writing the book it seems. He explains what's going on and it's very exciting to think that already, the environment around him is starting to shape the ideation and development of the book. He's quite excited about it! In 2004, the indie flick Sideways was released in just four theaters, but it had a big impact, earning five Oscar nominations and $110 million worldwide. “I thought it was just going to be a nice little comedy,” filmmaker Alexander Payne tells us. Instead, the movie became known for something else so notable that it has a name: The Sideways Effect. In this episode, we explore all the outsized effects of this one little movie on the huge wine industry. Did a single line of dialogue really tank merlot sales for decades? Did an ode to pinot noir jumpstart demand for this expensive grape? Did Paul Giamatti's sad sack character change our relationship to yet another wine, one that was barely mentioned in the film? Today on Decoder Ring, all of these questions and this one: Is it long past time to start drinking merlot? Some of the voices in this episode include Laura Lippmann, crime novelist; Tim Farrell, wine buyer for Brooklyn Wine Exchange; Rex Pickett, novelist and author of ‘Sideways,' Alexander Payne, director, screenwriter, and producer; Jeff Bundschu, owner of Gundlach Bundschu; Steve Cuellar, professor of economics at Sonoma State University; and Kathy Joseph, owner of Fiddlehead Cellars. We also mention Travis Lybbert's paper corroborating the “Sideways Effect,” which you can find here. Decoder Ring is written and produced by Willa Paskin. In this episode, Rex takes us through his mildly traumatic journey all the way from a drive from Del Mar to Los Angeles Airport to landing at Auckland Airport on Thursday. Rex and Youie then discuss what has happened since in our road trip right up to just before lunch on Sunday 15th of May. You'll hear about Rex's views of his appearance on live national show The Project on TV3 in New Zealand went down. You'll also hear Rex describe how the first three days have unfolded. You'll get some insights into his views on food and wine consumed thus far into the trip and lots of other stuff that takes the conversation occasionally ‘sideways'. You'll hear talk about book clubs, both men and women only, campervans, book tours, winetasting, sheep, lamb, all the things you'd expect from a podcast recorded for the first time with Rex and Youie in the same room. This is the fifth of short duration and quick to release News Flashes that we intend to share with you on the progress of various Sideways projects - the new book, the musical, the new movie, and all other Sideways related activities. This News Flash is focused on building on the exciting news that Rex is coming to New Zealand. In this episode, Rex and Youie chat through the itinerary and invite those living in Auckland, Gisborne, Napier and the Wairarapa to reach out to them and suggest people they should meet, places they should go during the mini 'roadtrip' that will start in Auckland on Thursday May 12, then go to Gisborne on Friday May 13, Saturday May 14, then Napier on Saturday May 14 and Sunday May 15. Then, it's off to Martinborough and the Wairarapa on Sunday May 15 ending up in Wellington on Sunday May 15 and Monday Tuesday 16. So, if you wish to meet Rex and buy him a drink or a coffee, then write to wine@158.co.nz and we'll see if he can catch up with you this time around or when he repeats the journey more slowly in July/August in his campervan. Also, a big call out for any book groups anywhere in the country who may wish to have Rex appear in person, please let us know. You're also invited to write to Rex on wine@158.co.nz and share with him some ideas that you may have as to what you'd like 'Miles' to do in the fourth book and hopefully, ultimately, the movie sequel!! The word of the podcast is antinomial. The most obscure one so far, we reckon. The Sideways wine collection (handpicked by Rex Pickett) is now on sale, so please head to https://www.blackmarket.co.nz/promo/sideways-wines-feature or www.158.co.nz and taste the movie! In this episode, Rex shares his views on the four phases or stages of drinking wine. He also announces an upcoming new Audio Commentary of his favourite movie – a well known British cult classic. For the rest of the episode, Rex explains each of the phases of drinking, what tends to happen in that phase, and how you can recognise it. He shares with us how in the movie Sideways, all the phases are on show and how the movie almost showed Miles and Jack reach that 4thphase, but in fact they pull back (unlike in the book where Miles goes all the way to the fourth stage). There is a number of ‘words of the podcast' including annealed, evanesce, and titrate to deal with. So, for those of you who like new words, this is a veritable feast and each word is explained in the podcast. Remember, you'll always learn something new on these podcasts. This is the third of short duration and quick to release News Flashes that we intend to share with you on the progress of various Sideways projects - the new book, the musical, the new movie, and all other Sideways related activities. This News Flash is focused on recent news once again emphasising Sideways' role in making Pinot Noir a famous grape around the world and the negative effect it had on Merlot sales too. This time the evidence comes from University of California Davis via a professor led research project and to that end, Rex is interviewed by NPR (the ‘BBC' equivalent in the US). In this episode Rex is keen to share with us what Sideways the Book contains which was missed out from the movie. Rex reveals the unusual sequence in the genesis of Sideways involving a screenplay, a book, and a short story. Rex also shares the strategy behind Miles and Jack's adventures and its connection with Murphy's Law (or Sod's Law) is revealed. Youie then finds out from Rex what he left out of the final version of the book/screenplay and then Rex reveals the bits from the book that were left out of the movie including the amazingly funny sequence involving gunshots and wild boars. We also get an answer from Rex on that tricky question he was asked in episode 17 and we get a question from another listener that makes Rex have to delicately tip toe in order to answer it. The word of the podcast is alchemisation and it's explained in the podcast. Remember, you'll always learn something new on these podcasts. So, why not subscribe to the podcast? Rex and Youie turn their attentions to the female leads in the book, the movie, the play, and the musical. It's a little confusing but in all mediums it's Maya and Terra, but only in the movie it's Maya and Stephanie. Youie asks Rex why Terra's name was changed to Stephanie and the clue to the answer lies with Sandra Oh, the well-known Korean-Canadian actress who starred in Grey's Anatomy following her break in the movie Sideways. Youie asks Rex about why he came up with the names ‘Maya' and ‘Terra' and then Rex goes onto explain their psychology as characters, again referencing Jung (I don't know about you, but I'm starting to think I need to read all 20 volumes of Jung's work!). Rex then explains how the roles of Maya and Terra were shrunk a little for the movie from the book but then how he chose to expand and deepen their roles in the play and then subsequently the Musical (out soon!). We then deal with our first two questions from our readers, including one that leaves Rex stumped. He actually gets lost for words, for real! The other letter has led Rex and I to create a very special project that we can't wait to tell you about. The word of the podcast is an almost unpronounceable 'enantiodromia'. This News Flash is the latest update on Sideways projects along with the big reveal of the new song – Without a Man - for Sideways – The Musical. Youie wants to know why Rex writes in this episode. The inspiration for this episode is Youie's re-reading of George Orwell's famous essay ‘Why I Write' (you can find the pdf easily on the web). Rex explains his younger days and shares with us at what point in his life he decided to become a writer. He shares the impact DH Lawrence had on his writing and gets deeply personal explaining how the way he was brought up influenced his career. Along the way, we learn about Pickett's Pocket Rockets, his School Principal's unhelpful feedback, birth order, Carl Jung, George Lucas and Star Wars, Joseph Campbell, atheism, agnosticism, and Freud. Youie then shares with Rex the list of reasons why George Orwell wrote according to the list and Rex responds to each in his typically open and honest style. Youie struggles to keep up with Rex in this episode as it truly is ‘Rex unleashed' and at his best. The words of the podcast are ‘via regia' and ‘diaphanous'. Incredibly, this episode is still related to Sideways but in a more sideways way if that makes sense. Rex discusses with Youie how he needed to replace one of the songs from the Sideways Musical and how it led to one of his female friends providing him with a list of the worst things about men. You will need to prepare yourself for a long list! This list provided the spark for Rex to write the replacement song, Without a Man, and he explains on this episode how he did it. Rex reads out the list and along with Youie they discuss this list with reflections on the characters of Mile and Jack from the Sideways movie and book. Rex seems to be at peace with list whereas it irks Youie a bit more. Rex then invites his male and female listeners, in particular, to write in and share their reactions and thoughts on this long list of male ills. Don't forget to ask Rex any question you like on wine@158.co.nz Rex then shares with us the full lyrics of the song and we have our first two letters from listeners including a question that leaves Rex stumped requiring him to do some homework which we're sure he'll share the results of on a future podcast. The word of the podcast is speciousness which pops in the conversation. Don't forget to listen to all the episodes, why not go back and listen to them all from the start. In this episode, Rex delves deeply into the psyche of Miles and Jack. Referencing Carl Jung, Star Wars, and the use of ‘conflict' in the cinema – creating drama, bringing in comedy and then squaring it away with resolution - Rex then discusses both sides of the Miles and Jack coin and reveals on whom these characters are based. The discussion then heads into a chat about introversion and extroversion and the way that these concepts may have influenced the development of the characters. Rex goes deeper into the different functions of introversion and extroversion, namely 'thinking' and 'feeling' explains Miles and Jack's behaviours. Rex then explains the differences in the characters between the book, the movie, the play, and the musical. He shares some of the byplay between him and Alexander Payne, the director of the movie, about the characterisation of Miles and Jack including references to porn and school teaching. Rex then turns the conversation back to Miles and Jack and they interact more deeply with Maya and Terra in the book, the play, and the musical. Towards the end of the conversation, with a bit of prompting from Youie, Rex reveals more about the depth of relationship between Miles and Jack and how the book is able to express it with more nuance than the movie can allow because of its time restrictions. The word of the podcast is archetypal which Rex attaches to Miles and Jack's characters. Remember, you'll always learn something new on these podcasts. Rex takes us through the world of Sideways and how it's grown from a book and become the basis for the movie and the play and now the Musical. You will find out how with each of these iterations, the characters begin to develop, and the plot lines are altered slightly to get the best out of each of these iterations or mediums. During the discussion of the Musical and how it came to be, you will be treated to two snippets of more songs from the Musical. Now, don't forget each episode begins with a great track ‘Life of Wine' and ends with an even greater track ‘No Fucking Merlot', so the two snippets are well overdue for listening and enjoyment. Rex also gives us an update on how the Play is going in Spain and for the record, it's doing a 30 date run just in Madrid let alone everywhere else it's been and where it's going. Youie teases Rex about how he is always up for a suggestion, so maybe you have a suggestion for Rex? Don't forget to write to him at wine@158.co.nz. We discuss the plans for staging the Musical in New Zealand and Australia as a precursor to a Broadways and West End runs in the future. The words of the podcast are Rex (as a Latin word) and the marvellous ‘efflorescence'. Remember, you'll always learn something new on these podcasts. Rex and Youie decide it's time to tackle the 'elephant in the room' which in the world of wine is wine snobbery. This is a tricky topic that Rex neatly guides Youie through. This episode starts off with Rex and Youie working out that their lucky number is 11 and then quickly turns to focusing on sommeliers (including how the word is properly pronounced) and Rex helps demystify their role and defuse any concern that Youie experiences when in the company of a sommelier in a restaurant. Rex is clear that he is not a wine snob and helps deconstruct what snobbery is about and how people become snobs in other areas and then returns to explaining it in the context of wine. He admits that wine lends itself to snobbery but that it needs to be resisted. The talk turns to the original location where Rex had his 'conversion' to Pinot Noir in Santa Monica and a discussion about epicureanism. Rex and Youie then start discussing strategies for buying wine at the restaurant table and how restaurants price their wine and then they finish off on the topic of which country produces the best wine and how would you rank the order of the others particularly when there appears to be a lot of wine snobbery attached to French wine. The word of the podcast is recondite and Rex easily explains what that word means (you'll get the joke if you know what the word means). All in all, a wonderful and varied episode where somehow War & Peace, Fellini's 8 1/2 and James Bond are all discussed in this episode to illustrate the democratisation of access to things that we love and like.
