American writer
POPULARITY
For more than five decades, Trent Angers has dedicated his life to journalism, publishing, and preserving the stories that define Louisiana and its people. As founder, editor, and publisher of Acadian House Publishing, Trent has edited and published 126 books over a 45-year career while also authoring six books of his own. His work has ranged from Cajun history and Louisiana political figures to military ethics, faith, and inspirational storytelling. A graduate of LSU’s School of Journalism, where he was named Outstanding Graduating Senior and received the Hodding Carter Award for Responsible Journalism, Trent followed in the footsteps of his father, Bob Angers, founder of Acadiana Profile magazine. Trent would eventually spend 36 years as editor and publisher of Acadiana Profile, helping build it into one of the longest-running regional magazines in America before selling the publication in 2010 to focus full-time on book publishing with Acadian House Publishing. During our conversation, Trent reflects on a life immersed in words, ideas, and the people behind them. “Born with printer’s ink in my blood” Trent jokes that journalism was his destiny. “You could say I was born with printer’s ink in the blood.” His father purchased the Franklin Banner-Tribune in 1953, and Trent grew up watching the realities of community journalism firsthand. When Bob Angers launched Acadiana Profile in 1968, regional magazines were virtually unheard of. “I thought he had lost his mind because there was almost no such thing as a city or regional magazine in this country at the time.” Instead, Bob Angers proved to be a visionary. More than fifty years later, the publication remains an important voice for South Louisiana. Acadian House Publishing: More Than Books Today, Acadian House Publishing is one of Louisiana’s most respected independent publishers. Its catalog includes biographies, history, cookbooks, inspirational works, faith-based books, and regional classics. Trent describes publishing as far more than simply printing books. “Publishing involves careful acquisition of titles, careful editing, fact-checking, correcting, perfecting, marketing, warehousing, accounting, and distribution.” Acadian House receives approximately 150 manuscript proposals each year but publishes only three or four books annually. “No is the most powerful word in the English language.” With limited capacity, Trent looks for books that move people, educate readers, and inspire meaningful reflection. Dispelling Myths About Cajun Culture At age 40, Trent wrote his first book, The Truth About the Cajuns, a work designed to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about Acadian people. “The first book I actually wrote is when I turned 40. The book was titled The Truth About the Cajuns. The book was designed to dispel the myths and stereotypes about the Acadian people. We’re very proud of our Acadian heritage. We’re not simple minded people who aren’t so bright. We don’t all dwell in the swamp. Our lives do not revolve around eating, drinking and dancing Trent wanted readers to understand that Cajun identity extends far beyond the caricatures often portrayed in popular culture. The book remains one of the most thoughtful examinations of Cajun identity and heritage. Dudley LeBlanc: The Original Champion of Cajun Pride Another of Trent’s works is Dudley LeBlanc: A Biography, which chronicles the life of the legendary founder of Hadacol and one of Louisiana’s most colorful political figures. “Dudley LeBlanc, who founded Hadacol, was also known as the political and almost spiritual leader of the Acadian people. He had a French language radio show emanating from from Abbeville. The truth is, Dudley started the French Renaissance movement before Jimmy Domengeaux formalized it through CODIFIL. Dudley LeBlanc would bring it up and say, ‘Let’s stand up for our Acadian heritage and be proud and not ashamed of who we are, not ashamed of our heritage and culture.” While many remember LeBlanc for his wildly successful patent medicine business, Trent argues that his greatest contribution was cultural. Long before organizations formalized the movement to preserve Cajun culture, LeBlanc encouraged Acadians to embrace their language, traditions, and identity. According to Trent, both Dudley LeBlanc and James Domengeaux deserve tremendous credit for preserving and advancing Acadian culture in Louisiana. The Forgotten Hero of the My Lai Massacre Perhaps no project has shaped Trent’s career more than The Forgotten Hero of My Lai: The Hugh Thompson Story. The book tells the story of Hugh Thompson Jr., the American helicopter pilot credited with stopping the My Lai Massacre during the Vietnam War. “I became Thompson’s biographer and spent lots and lots of time with him in Vietnam, in Norway, and throughout the United States, in Washington, D.C., etc. I wrote his speech when he received the soldier’s medal in Washington at the Vietnam Wall, which is the highest award a soldier can earn for anything other than direct combat with the enemy,” Trent said. Trent devoted more than 3,000 hours of research across three continents to tell Thompson’s story. “That book was my opus.” The defining moment came when Thompson landed his helicopter between fleeing Vietnamese civilians and advancing American soldiers. “Not on my watch,” he said. Thompson ordered his gunner to protect the civilians, even if it meant turning their weapons on fellow Americans. His actions saved lives and ultimately helped bring the massacre to an end. Trent explains why Thompson’s story continues to resonate: “They were willing to give up their lives just because it was the right thing to do.” The book has since been placed on the reading list of the Joint Chiefs of Staff because of its lessons on leadership, battlefield ethics, and moral courage. Publishing Louisiana’s Most Influential Voices Over the years, Acadian House has published works by an extraordinary range of Louisiana authors and leaders. Among them are books by: Dale Brown Lt. General Russel L. Honoré Marcelle Bienvenu Camille Pavy Claiborne Brian Sibley Chad Judice Trent speaks admiringly of each, emphasizing not only their accomplishments but also their character, intellect, and ability to inspire others. Dale Brown and Human Dignity One of Trent’s most meaningful publishing relationships has been with legendary LSU basketball coach Dale Brown. Acadian House published Brown’s Getting Over the Four Hurdles of Life, and Trent later authored Dale Brown: Caught in the Battle for Human Dignity. He also played a significant role, along with Lafayette attorney Glenn Armentor, in the effort to have LSU’s basketball court named in Brown’s honor. “Every generation needs role models.” For Trent, Brown represents integrity, courage, compassion, and leadership. “Dale Brown is a role model of integrity, courage, bravery, intelligence.” Those qualities made him not only a successful coach but also one of America’s most sought-after motivational speakers. The Secret Life of an Editor One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation centered on the editor-author relationship. After working closely with writers for months or years, Trent says editors often develop a deep understanding of how authors think. “We call that mind meld.” His philosophy is simple: “The job of an editor is to make the writer look like a genius.” That requires more than correcting grammar. It involves improving structure, strengthening logic, checking facts, and helping authors communicate their ideas as clearly as possible. Cookbooks Outsell Almost Everything Despite publishing biographies, history, and inspirational works, Trent admits one category consistently surprises him: Cookbooks. Acadian House’s most successful title is Marcelle Bienvenu’s iconic cookbook Who’s Your Mama, Are You Catholic, and Can You Make a Roux? The book has sold approximately 200,000 copies. “That book is in the top one percentile of books ever published in America.” For Trent, the success is both gratifying and humbling. “You do a cookbook and you sell the heck out of it.” The enduring popularity of Louisiana food culture continues to introduce readers around the world to Acadiana traditions. Freedom of the Press As a lifelong journalist, Trent remains deeply passionate about the First Amendment. “Freedom of the press is the hill I would die on. This country is free, in part because of the free press. Because of the free flow of information. It’s the press’s job to educate, to inform, to entertain. We serve the public, not the government. The press exists to serve the public.” He argues that a free society depends upon the free flow of information and a press willing to challenge power when necessary. “The press exists to serve the public, not the government.” Regardless of political affiliation, Trent believes journalism’s highest calling remains informing citizens and protecting democratic accountability. What’s Next: Orphan Train to Louisiana Among Acadian House’s upcoming projects is Orphan Train to Louisiana, a book examining the little-known story of thousands of orphaned children transported from New York City to families across America. The project was inspired by a staggering historical reality. “At one point in New York City there were 30,000 babies and children on the street, homeless.” The book explores the efforts of religious organizations and charitable groups that worked to place children with loving families, including many in Louisiana. For Trent, it is exactly the kind of story Acadian House loves to tell: forgotten history that reveals the best of humanity. Faith, Service, and Gratitude Outside of publishing, Trent is active in the Secular Franciscan Order, whose members seek to live according to the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi through service, humility, and care for others. Reflecting on his blessings, he says: “We’re among the luckiest people in the world, in the history of civilization.” That perspective of gratitude, combined with a lifelong commitment to storytelling, continues to shape his work today. Whether preserving Cajun history, documenting battlefield courage, promoting faith-filled voices, or introducing readers to remarkable Louisianans, Trent Angers remains one of Acadiana’s most important cultural storytellers. Which Phoenix nonprofit executives are making the most money? You may be familiar with some of these companies they run and Dale Brown, director of research at the Phoenix Business Journal joins the show to break down the list.
It’s official! Former LSU men’s basketball coach Will Wade is returning to Baton Rouge to coach the Tigers again next season. The 43-year old Wade coached the LSU basketball team from 2017-2022 until he was fired following an NCAA probe into improper payments being offered to certain LSU basketball recruits. Back then, the NCAA did not allow schools to pay their players. Yet. Ironically, Will Wade’s dismissal by LSU in 2022 happened right as the NCAA’s new rules (such as they are) were being implemented to allow college athletes to receive compensation for their name, image, and likeness (NIL). Wade was simply ahead of his time. LSU was slapped with five NCAA sanctions and sent the basketball coach to the unemployment line. Will Wade re-emerged at McNeese State University in Lake Charles a year later in 2023. He led the Cowboys into their first-ever NCAA March Madness tournament in 2024 and, again, in 2025. Wade was then hired to become the head coach at North Carolina State this past season. His NC State Wolfpack team was selected to participate in the NCAA “First Four” round. They lost to Texas in that game to finish the year at 20-14. While that was happening in the life of Will Wade, LSU’s then-Athletics Director Scott Woodward hired former Murray State basketball coach Matt McMahon to run the men’s program in the spring of 2022. The Murray State Racers qualified for the NCAA March Madness tournament three times in five seasons under Coach McMahon before he left for LSU. Four years later, coach Matt McMahon’s LSU teams had won only 17 SEC games against 55 conference losses (23.6%). This season’s Tigers finished dead last in the league with a woeful 3-15 record. Matt McMahon was dismissed this week, but he won’t go away empty handed The ex-LSU basketball coach will receive nearly $8 million as part of his contract buyout provisions. He joined a growing number of former LSU sports leaders who were fired in recent years but received lucrative going-away presents upon their exit. Former LSU head football coaches Brian Kelly ($54 million – 2025) and Ed Orgeron ($17 million – 2021) along with former AD Scott Woodward ($6 million – 2025) have been paid handsomely to hit the road. When added to Matt McMahon’s $8 million buyout, that is $85 million which LSU’s wealthiest athletics backers have been asked to cover. In exchange, the school’s financial backers demand winners (sooner than later) in return for being asked to pay for so many expensive changes in Baton Rouge. Speaking of money, basketball coach Will Wade’s former school at North Carolina State will receive $4 million as compensation after his abrupt exit following season #1 in Raleigh. NC State Athletic Director Boo Corrigan was understandably miffed at coach Will Wade’s decision to leave his program after just one year. “As far as the resignation letter, it was an email that we received from his agent,” said Corrigan. “I’m disappointed at how it went down.” Is the LSU basketball job actually better than North Carolina State? LSU has zero NCAA men’s basketball tournament titles. Long-time coach and fan favorite Dale Brown’s Tigers played in two Final Four appearances (1981 and 1986), but his teams lost in the national semifinals both years. Brown’s successor, John Brady, led LSU to another Final Four appearance in 2006. Same result. Over the past twenty years, LSU was selected for the NCAA post-season tournament just five times. Three of those occurred during coach Will Wade’s five seasons with the Tigers (2019, 2021, and 2022). After being fired by LSU, Will Wade rebuilt his credibility by turning the McNeese State Cowboys of the Southland Conference into a basketball powerhouse during his two years in Lake Charles. The Pokes went 30-4 and 28-7, won the Southland Conference title both years, and made two consecutive March Madness post-season appearances. Wade left after two seasons to take the job at North Carolina State of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack already had two national championship trophies in Raleigh. Coach Norm Sloan’s 1973-74 team featured dynamic high-flying forward David Thompson, 7’4” center Tom Burleson and diminutive 5’7” point guard Monty Towe. NC State defeated legendary coach John Wooden’s mighty UCLA Bruins in overtime in the semifinals and then polished-off Marquette to win the school’s first basketball title. Coach Jim Valvano’s 1983 North Carolina State team won the ACC Tournament and barely qualified for the NCAA March Madness field as a lowly #6 regional seed. His “Cardiac Pack” thrilled the nation by defeating a series of top teams on their way to the title game against heavily favored Houston. Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and Houston’s Phi Slamma Jamma team lost to NC State on a stunning last second put-back for the Wolfpack’s second national championship. Given North Carolina State’s national stature in basketball, the job in Raleigh seems to be slightly higher in prestige than the men’s head coaching job at LSU. Since the turn of the century, the ACC was won ten national titles versus four by the SEC. Coach Will Wade’s first year at North Carolina State improved the Wolfpack from 12-19 last year to 20-14 in 2026. However… North Carolina State recently announced that it is having athletic budget issues A February report indicated that North Carolina State’s athletics department ran a $18.5 deficit over the past 12 months. The school’s athletic revenues of $126 million did not cover the expenses of $144 million. The report cited increased costs due to revenue sharing with the athletes. In fact, $18 million was shared by NC State’s athletes over in the past year. The school (like so many others) is now looking at raising ticket prices, holding large concerts on-campus, and other measures aimed to increase revenues without trimming athletic costs. Perhaps Will Wade saw the handwriting on the wall at NC State. He has moved to a school which has been spending money on athletics like the proverbial drunken sailor. Is LSU becoming McNeese State University – East campus? In the past six months, LSU has looked 130 miles to the west to hire two of its key leaders from McNeese State University in Lake Charles. McNeese President Wade Rousse accepted the vacant top position at LSU in November, 2025. The new LSU President was rumored to be the top choice of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. Yesterday (Thursday), McNeese State University Athletics Director Heath Schroyer announced his departure for LSU as well. He was named “Senior Deputy AD/Executive Director of External Relations” for the LSU system. Translation – Heath Schroyer will be tasked with raising more money for sports (particularly men’s basketball) while hovering over the shoulders of current LSU Director of Athletics Verge Ausberry. Schroyer had been a long-time college basketball coach. After becoming the McNeese State University Athletics Director, he brought Will Wade to coach the men’s basketball team in 2023. The program quickly blossomed into a Southland Conference dynamo. As the week draws to a close, the 2023-2025 era McNeese State University posse of President Wade Rousse, AD Heath Schroyer, and men’s basketball coach Will Wade has been reunited again in Baton Rouge. LSU’s athletics budget was already huge. What’s a few more million dollars to bring in a new men’s basketball coach and his good buddy, right? Men’s basketball at LSU has been in significant decline in recent years. However, the men’s basketball team financial income statement is, somehow, still profitable. LSU’s 2025 annual report to the NCAA showed that men’s basketball turned a profit of around $2.5 million despite declining home game attendance. Meanwhile, Coach Kim Mulkey’s very popular women’s basketball team at LSU averaged 10,707 fans per game vs. 7,147 for the men. The LSU women won the 2023 national championship and earned a #2 regional seed in the Women’s March Madness tournament this year. LSU fans are very proud of Kim Mulkey and the school’s women’s basketball program. Would you believe that the LSU women’s program posted an $8 million loss in 2025? How is that even possible? The compensation (salary, bonus, and benefits) for the LSU men’s and women’s basketball coaches and staff are fairly equal. In case you were wondering, Kim Mulkey earned $500,000 more than men’s coach Matt McMahon’s $3 million last year. Total expenses for the men’s team last year were $11.1 million. The LSU women’s basketball team spent $12.1 million in 2025. However, the LSU women’s basketball program produced total revenues of just $4.137 million (tickets, program donations, and about $500,000 from NCAA post-season tournament revenues). The women’s team had zero media income from the SEC and other media sources, though. The LSU’s men’s basketball team posted revenues of $13.625 million! The Tigers benefited from a $2 million check from the massive NCAA’s men’s March Madness TV contract plus another $7 million received from the SEC and others for media rights. That incremental $9 million for LSU men’s basketball from SEC media sources and NCAA tournament revenues makes a world of difference! From LSU’s perspective, there is still upside potential to increase men’s basketball ticket sales, merchandising, and, of course, NIL fundraising as coach Will Wade returns to the school next year. Ride ’em, ex-Cowboys! Expect the former McNeese State Cowboys’ dynamic duo of Will Wade and cohort Heath Schroyer to join forces to shake every possible money tree in Louisiana on behalf of the LSU men’s basketball program. Will Wade wants more money to buy better basketball players. LSU’s athletics budget of more than $200 million annually dwarfs the $146 million (and its $18 million annual loss) at North Carolina State. Coach Wade envisions LSU’s bigger pie and more to share with his players. The increased interest in men’s basketball around Baton Rouge resulting from Will Wade’s return should provide a reasonable boost to season ticket sales revenue. If Coach Wade is able to transform LSU’s men’s basketball team into an March Madness contender soon, the funding from basketball donors will grow as well. Time to giddy-up and Geaux Tigers! The post Will Wade and the McNeese State Posse Rides into Baton Rouge appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.
Between 1972 and 1997 the Southeastern Conference in basketball grew in stature from just being a premier football conference. During that time of conference growth of both prominence and popularity, the team most emblematic of that growth in national prestige was located in -- of all places-- Baton Rouge Louisiana. And the leader of this team from the sidelines hailed from the hinterlands of North Dakota. In his episode of the Historically Speaking Sports Podcast, Co-hosts Dana Auguster and Charles Combs highlight the era of LSU Tigers basketball under the direction of Head Coach Dale Brown. During his tenure with the Tigers, Brown didn't just coach basketball at LSU, he made it matter in a football crazed state and made it a national brand. He took a program that had flashes of relevance and turned into a powerhouse that would go toe-to-toe with anyone in the country. This was the era of superstars such as Chris Jackson who would later become Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, whose scoring brilliance electrified the country and garnered comparisons to Pete Maravich. It was also the era of the unstoppable force of Shaquille O'Neal, a once in a generation talent who turned LSU into must see TV. And before them there was Rudy Macklin leading the Tigers to the final four, for the first time since the early 1950s But the Dale Brown era wasn't just about wins and NBA draft picks .It was about personality, passion and conviction. Brown was outspoken, emotional, sometimes controversial -- a coach who wore his heart on his sleeve and fought fiercely for his players. He believed LSU could compete with the blue bloods of college basketball and for stretches from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s ... it absolutely did. Kids today don't just need places to play — they need positive environments where they can learn, compete, and grow. That's what the National Academy of Athletics is trying to restore. In this episode, CEO Aaron Locks and Area Captain Marcus Tolibas break down how their talk.teach.PLAY!® method gives kids the same lessons many adults learned growing up on playgrounds, parks, driveways, and neighborhood courts — life skills like confidence, teamwork, communication, sportsmanship, and effort. Aaron shares how legendary coaches like John Wooden and Dale Brown shaped the method he now teaches to coaches across the country. Marcus brings the local perspective — showing how Sacramento communities are rebuilding youth sports by focusing on fun, fundamentals, and character over trophies. Together, they explain why kids quit sports, how to keep them engaged, and why parents should be asking more questions about how their kids are being coached, not just what sport they're playing.

LSU football returns starting QB Jayden Daniels, leading receiver Malik Nabers, and leading sacker Harold Perkins next season. Compared to Alabama who is losing its starting quarterback Bryce Young and leading sacker Will Anderson to the NFL Draft, LSU has a gift of consistency next season. But compared to the rest of college football, where does LSU rank in terms of returning production from 2022 to next season? ESPN's Bill Connelly broke down and calculated the percentage of returning production for every team in college football. Where does LSU rank? In what ways are Connelly's rankings inaccurate and not representative of projected performance for next season? Plus, the LSU Board of Supervisors plans to meet Friday to vote on whether or not Dale Brown Court at the PMAC should be renamed in honor of Sue Gunter, former LSU women's basketball coach that lead the Tigers to nearly 450 wins and fourteen tournament appearances in her tenure as head coach. Dale Brown also made his mark on the LSU basketball program as the winningest coach in that team's history. What is the right move for the LSU Board of Supervisors to make for the dedication of the basketball court? If Dale Brown deserved the honor years ago and did nothing to have that honor revoked, why should it be? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! This week Jason and Matt had the pleasure of talking to the Godfather of the libertarian police accountability movement and co-founder of Cop Block, Pete Eyre. Pete's name is well known in liberty circles far and wide. For years Pete lived in Keene, New Hampshire with the Free State Project, in the late 2000's Pete worked with Bureaucrash, and around that same time, he interviewed Dr. Ron Paul in 2009 with the motorhome diaries. He later spent months on the road with 'Liberty on tour," and did at least one tour promoting Cop Block. Pete also had a short stint living in Acapulco with other abolitionists while involving himself in the crypto scene working with DASH and other crypto entities. During our conversation, we talked to Pete about the mission and focus of his new project called "Duty To Protect" which Pete explained in detail. We discussed how police employees have no legal obligation to protect the public. We also discussed being proactive versus reactive, the power of the individual versus collectively shared objectives, why changing the system from the inside isn't a logical approach, what the best path forward for the police accountability movement could be, private security companies like Dale Brown's Threat Management Center in Detroit, and solutions that transcend current authoritarian paradigms.
