How can we break barriers for women in God's service? In this episode, host Tina Yeager sits down with husband-and-wife co-authors Amy and Rob Dixon to explore the important topic of breaking gender barriers in church leadership and service. Drawing from their experiences, latest picture book Penny Preaches, and years of ministry, Amy and Rob share compelling stories and practical insights about empowering both women and men to use their God-given gifts fully within the church. Together, they discuss the power of seeing role models, the impact of tradition and history on church culture, and how to have healthy, grace-filled conversations around challenging topics. Whether you're a church leader, parent, or someone wanting to better understand the value of egalitarianism in faith, this episode will encourage you to rethink how we can all flourish by embracing the diverse callings God places on each of our lives. Key Takeaways from the Conversation: The Power of Models: Amy and Rob remind us how critical it is for children—especially girls—to see women in leadership roles within their faith communities. “It's hard to be what you can't see,” Rob shares, highlighting how exposure and representation fuel confidence and ambition. Gifts Without Gender Limits: The church thrives when everyone is able to use their God-given gifts freely, regardless of gender. Amy notes, “God has gifted us each individually with good gifts, and they're not sectioned off by gender.” Imagine the impact if the whole team was on the field, not just half! Moving Beyond Fear: The resistance to women in leadership often stems from fear—fear of change, of lost power, or simply the unknown. Rob reflects on how churches can move forward together and men can serve as allies, supporting rather than fearing women stepping into their callings. Healing from Past Wounds: Amy's openness about her own wounds from the church is a powerful reminder that you're not alone—and that healing comes, in part, from supportive communities and looking at the “fruits” of service. Creating Space for Dialogue: These conversations aren't always easy, but the key is humility and honest, scripture-centered discussion. The church has a unique opportunity to model healthy disagreement and mutual respect to the wider world. For Parents and Leaders:Penny Preaches isn't just for girls—it's for every child (and parent) eager to see what happens when everyone is empowered to serve God. Boys, too, benefit from seeing strong, Spirit-led women in their midst. Ready to Get Involved? Grab a copy of Penny Preaches at IVPress.com, AmyDixonBooks.com, or wherever books are sold. Today is National Picture Book Day, so we celebrate by bringing the voices of Rob and Amy Dixon to the table. In this episode, I speak with Amy and Rob Dixon about their new picture book, Penny Preaches, which helps normalize girls in church leadership roles. We:• Explore the theological frameworks of complementarianism versus egalitarianism in church settings.• Understand how women's leadership gifts remain untapped – "the church has been trying to fulfill the Great Commission with half the team on the bench."• Discuss the importance of representation and modeling in helping children envision possibilities: "It's hard to be what you can't see."• Look at how to raise children with an egalitarian mindset through transparency and collaboration.• Respond to resistance with "convictions held with humility" rather than combativeness.• Unleash the powerful message that "God gives good gifts to everyone" regardless of gender.Order this powerful children's book: Penny PreachesLearn more abut Rob's books: Dr. Rob DixonLearn more about Amy's other children's books: Amy Dixon BooksSupport the showBegin Your Heartlifter's Journey: Visit and subscribe to Heartlift Central on Substack. Listen to a conversation with Wynton Marsalis, a world-renowned trumpet player, composer, and educator whose artistry and influence span the worlds of jazz and classical music. Marsalis was Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1961. He grew up immersed in the jazz legacy of his hometown. His father, Ellis Marsalis Jr., was a legendary pianist and educator, and his brothers Branford, Delfeayo, and Jason are also acclaimed musicians. A virtuoso in both jazz and classical music, Marsalis was the first musician to win Grammy Awards in both fields in the same year, a feat he achieved in 1984. Marsalis was also the first jazz musician to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Music, for his oratorio Blood on the Fields. Marsalis has become a global ambassador for jazz, and since 1991, he's served as the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Also, hear an interview with the acclaimed Indianapolis jazz saxophonist Rob Dixon. He'll discuss his upcoming tribute to jazz legend John Coltrane “A Love Supreme: 60th Anniversary Tribute”. For Indianapolis music fans, Rob Dixon needs no introduction. He's been called the “musical mayor of Indianapolis”, a reference to his prominent role in the city's music scene. Dixon has worked with many jazz luminaries, including Illinois Jacquet, Mike Clark, and Charlie Hunter. Dixon is also the artistic director of the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation.

David Allee wears many hats: club owner, musician, music producer, and community non-profit leader, to name a few. As the owner of the Jazz Kitchen for nearly 30 years and as the Director of Indy Jazz Fest for over a decade, David has helped to curate literally thousands of jazz performances in Indianapolis by national and regional artists. The Jazz Kitchen has received multiple “Best 100 Jazz Clubs in the World” by Downbeat Magazine, and its sonics and ambience have inspired dozens of artists to record live albums in the venue. David, along with jazz artist/community leader Rob Dixon, re-energized the Indy Jazz Fest over a decade ago, and has continued to grow the Fest and the Indy Jazz Foundation, “to preserve the legacy and promote the future of jazz in Indianapolis.” David and I had a conversation in 2022 about his life, what inspired him to start the Jazz Kitchen, and his vision for preserving and growing Indianapolis' rich jazz history.

If we view the Church as we do a theater or a restaurant, then we are going to view and interact with it like it's just an organization. Celebrated jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery was born 100 years ago in Indianapolis and spent much of his career here, recording and performing on Indiana Avenue, sometimes with his brothers and often with some of the greatest jazz, soul and even pop musicians of his generation. Montgomery died in 1968 at just 45 years old. But during his relatively short career, he won two Grammy Awards and was routinely selected as the top guitarist in Down Beat magazine polls, five times by critics in the 1960s and four times by readers. We're turning today's episode of the podcast over to IBJ arts writer Dave Lindquist for an exploration of the ways that Wes Montgomery was an innovator of jazz guitar, why fellow guitarists continue to find inspiration in his playing 55 years after his death and how he was one of many world-class musicians to emerge from the Indiana Avenue jazz scene in the 1940s and '50s. Joining Dave for the conversation are Rob Dixon, a saxophone player and artistic director of the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation. And Lasana Kazembe, a poet, teaching artist and assistant professor of education at IUPUI. Rob and Lasana will celebrate Montgomery's legacy during a May 13 special event at The Cabaret, where Kazembe serves as the venue's first artist in residence. The event is titled “In Our Own Sweet Way: Honoring the Artistic Legacy of Wes Montgomery.” The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.
The Florida reef lights date back to 1852 when Carysfort Reef Lighthouse was completed under the direction of Lt. George Meade of the Army Corps of Engineers. Sombrero Key Lighthouse was built a few years later, and then Alligator Reef was built as the third of the reef lights in 1873. Alligator Reef Lighthouse is about four nautical miles offshore from the village of Islamorada. The reef is named for the U.S. Navy schooner Alligator, which was launched at Boston in 1820. Alligator Reef Lighthouse, courtesy of Friends of the Pool, Inc. The lighthouse was established on the northeast end of the reef in 1873, with a light 136 feet above the water. The iron skeletal tower stands on pilings that are driven 10 feet into the coral. The cost of construction was $185,000, making it a very expensive project at the time. The light was automated and de-staffed in 1963. In 2021, under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the lighthouse was deeded to Friends of the Pool, Inc., a local nonprofit organization that has held an annual eight-mile round-trip swimming race to the lighthouse. Rob Dixon, left, and Larry Herlth There are two guests in this episode, and both are leaders of the effort to preserve Alligator Reef Lighthouse. Rob Dixon is a longtime charter fishing boat operator and open water swimmer based in Islamorada, and he's the president of Friends of the Pool. Larry Herlth is a metal artisan specializing in incredibly detailed replicas of the Florida Keys Lighthouses, and he's also a swimmer who inaugurated the Swim for Alligator Lighthouse. He's known widely as Lighthouse Larry.

Rob Dixon (DIS, Fuller Theological Seminary) is an associate regional ministry director with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA and senior fellow for gender partnership with the InterVarsity Institute. He is an adjunct professor at Fresno Pacific University and Fuller Theological Seminary and provides training on flourishing mixed-gender ministry partnerships for numerous organizations around the country. He is also the author of Together in Ministry: Women and Men in Flourishing Partnerships.
Women and men are designed to work together in fulfilling God’s mission on earth. Yet God’s original intent for equal partnership has been so distorted that churches and organizations continually struggle to foster healthy mixed-gender ministry collaboration. Today I'm talking with Rob Dixon about ten attributes that create flourishing relationships between men and women.Rob had identified ten attributes that cultivate flourishing partnerships, which means both people experience personal satisfaction and missional effectiveness. He then breaks those ten attributes into the inner life, community culture, and intentional practices. Each chapter details a specific attribute, what it is, how it looks, where it shows up in Scripture, its benefits, the barriers, and how to develop it—practical stuff. Rob's work speaks specifically to mixed-gender relationships in ministry and the workplace, but I have to tell you, I highlighted some things for Steve and me to discuss when he gets home from Africa.

All Shall Be Well: Conversations with Women in the Academy and Beyond
How can women and men flourish in their working relationships? Join our conversation with Rob Dixon about his forthcoming book on mixed gender ministry partnerships. "For centuries, the church has been trying to fulfill the Great Commission with half of the team largely relegated to the bench. Let's try something different." — Dr. Rob Dixon Let me invite you into a conversation I had with Dr. Rob Dixon, author of the forthcoming book Together in Ministry: Women and Men in Flourishing Partnerships. Rob's book puts forth a bold vision for mixed gender ministry partnerships that I found deeply moving. Through his research, Rob uncovers a comprehensive model for flourishing partnerships that inspires action. I'm still wrestling with it, honestly, and wondering how to create space for more flourishing in the partnerships in my own church community and work space. It's just the kind of good work that a book can do in a person and I'm so glad that Rob is sharing this book — and this vision — with the world. So have a listen! We're so glad you're here. — Ann Boyd For show notes or more information please visit our article at The Well. Rob Dixon, the Musical Mayor of Indianapolis, is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and community leader, who is the most-recognized figure of Indianapolis’ jazz scene for the past 20 years, when he returned to Indy after many years living and playing in New York City. Rob plays multiple nights a week in Indianapolis, when he’s not touring with national artists including 8-string guitarist Charlie Hunter and The Headhunters (members of Herbie Hancock’s 1970’s jazz fusion band). Rob and I talk about his early life and formative experiences that took him from the East Coast to Indiana University, to New York, and back to Indianapolis. Rob also talks about the need to recapture Indianapolis’ jazz heritage and why he is encouraged by a new generation of Indianapolis jazz musicians.
On August 26th, 1920, the 19th amendment was officially ratified, giving women the vote. Today is the 100th anniversary of that historic day. That amendment's fate lay in the hands of a 24-year-old young man. Often women need men to step up if we are going to enjoy the blessed alliance, which is why we are talking with Dr. Rob Dixon today. We have many listeners who want to know how we get men to support women? Listen to Rob and learn.

Mike Jeffers and special guest Brandon Meeks talking about his music, recordings, acting and much more. About Brandon Meeks Brandon Meeks is seeking to redefine how Gary, Indiana is only known as the home of the Jackson Family. The independent bassist, producer, arranger, and beatmaker is gaining steam in the crowded world of Jazz, Hip-Hop and R&B by choosing to follow his own path and ignoring the allure of popular trends. Meeks’ professionalism and dedication to the craft of making music brought him to the attention of Don Cheadle. Brandon was cast in Cheadle’s 2016 directorial debut film, Miles Ahead—a movie about iconic musician Miles Davis. Brandon worked directly with both Cheadle and jazz artist Robert Glasper during the film’s production. He was chosen to play the character of legendary bassist, Ron Carter. Brandon’s skill as a jazz bassist was a major reason he was chosen to be in the film and this has allowed him to reach an entirely new fanbase. He is now taking full advantage of his good fortune and capitalizing on this moment by introducing people to all of the work he has done that allowed him to gain ground in the industry. Before Brandon was featured in Miles Ahead, he’s held the role of primary producer for the Indianapolis based Hip-Hop band Native Sun. Native Sun has been compared to The Legendary Roots Crew due to their use of live instruments in their performances and recordings. During his time with the band, Brandon has created 2 magnetically soulful albums plus a series of sharp, compelling videos that have earned the attention of influential cultural tastemakers such as AFROPUNK and Team Backpack. His efforts to share Native Sun’s music and build his audience has resulted in over 500 thousand views, 10 thousand shares and over 1 million people reached around the globe. What’s more amazing is that he has done this while also managing the band’s social media, his own social media and website and the creation of content that has made his website one of the more active and engaging platforms in indie music. Brandon’s work with Native Sun is bolstered by his work with noteworthy jazz and soul artists. He regularly plays bass with Rob Dixon, The JD Allen Trio, Zo! of The Foreign Exchange, Sy Smith, Nicole Henry and is a part of The William Menefield Trio. Meeks also holds residencies at famed and historic jazz clubs such as The Chatterbox (Indianapolis) and Greenwich Jazz Club (Cincinnati).

Research has shown that utilising exposed timber increases our connection with nature is one of the major elements of biophilic design with proven benefits in well-being and productivity. It also is commonly desired by architects for the beautiful finish, and by developers for market differentiation. The performance solution and engagement of fire engineers allows designers to utilise a much higher proportion of exposed timber structure. Today we speak with Rob Dixon and Travis Stirling, Senior Fire Engineers from Arup on their perspective on how to achieve the performance solution. In this episode we discuss all the risks and the solutions for exposing timber in mid-rise timber buildings. Cowboy, Dougy Fresh, and Paulie Gee(e's are silent) are back one again to graciously cover this amazing two-day music festival and benefit. The event that started back in 2004 for one very special girl is now bringing families and friends from across America and beyond for a weekend of celebration and to bring awareness and more support for those affected by 4p-, also known as Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome (WHS), an extremely rare chromosome disorder. As always, the Pigs bring their own brand of silly, laid back fun to cover Kammy's Kause, without forgetting the heartfelt reason why they are there. Helping to co-host the event is the beautiful Sara Bishop and the Pigs' personal bodyguard, Griswold Stout. Tune in to Part One as they are joined by numerous band members and friends who come out each year to play music and give their time throughout the year to support Kammy and the 4p- Support Group. A big thanks for those who jumped on a mic to talk about why this event is so special to them as well as what's going on with their respective bands, Mr. Zach Garner, Chris Sarber and David Charles Bailey of Pinky and The Basterds, and Ben Jarvis of Audiodacity. The boys had a great time, once again, being part of the Kammy's Kause family and talking to friends and supporters and they give a shout out and request to their fans in Lebanon. Be sure to stay tuned for the release of Part Two when they are joined by more band members and the very busy, father and Kammy's Kause founder, Mr. Jared Hiner. The summer is almost over and the pace at which new albums are being released is picking up... … and so we kick over into a new year, 2015. I keep a black moleskin with all of my various projects, initiatives, goals, and hair-brained schemes in it. I'd say we got through quite a few last year, from a revamped website to some new equipment, and finally to building a makeshift stage and video studio down in the secret underground bunker we call "Indy In-Tune Studio B." This year, the goals are fewer, and possibly less-ambitious. Put simply, my goal this year is to be as busy as humanly possile. Specifically, I want to be at 250 podcasts, 50 mini concerts, and as much archived on-air fun as I can accumulate under the belt by this time next year. Why? Because it has not escape my attention that after 9 years, I should be coming up on episode #450, and in the past two years that veritable conucopia of weelkly shows that have popped up (Free Beer Express, Brother Brother, Chris Brake Show, DoIt Indy, et al.), and some of them are already approaching their 100th episode. That part of my brain that's ruled by numbers tells me that this is unacceptable. I am the longest-standing podcaster in Central Indiana, I should have an episode count that inspires awe. So if anything, as I've always said, I love the fact that shows like those come along, since they make me step up my game. 2015 kicks off with our third visit from the great Bashiri Asad, this time in support of his brand new release, "Bashiri Asad Presents the Gil Suite: A Toast to Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson." This is an amazing album he has put together as part of his "Year of Tributes" (more on that during the interview) and features some top-notch talent from around our scene including, but not limited to, Brandon Meeks, Devon Ashley, Justin Brewer, Rob Dixon, Nick Gerlach, Max Allen, Phil Geyer, and Ashton Kleeman. He joined us in the studio with guitarist John Fell where he gave an impromptu acoustic set of numbers spaning all of his releases. How's that for kicking the year off with a bang? Links referenced in the show: Bashiri Asad can be found here: | | The first three tracks were recorded live on the air in the studio and are presented in their original raw format, just they way they aired -- mostly because I'm not a producer. Bashiri is accompanied by on guitar for these tracks. Apologies for the webcam blips, beer bottle clanks, and awe-inspired whispering in the background. This week features the long-promised interview with Tish Lyndsey, an exciting performer in the local scene who blends pop, soul, and jazz with an angelic voice and a stage presence that can only be described as electrifying. Tish gives us four great tracks that show off her dynamic range as a singer/songwriter, along with a fantastic interview where she discusses her history, her family, her loves, and her drives. All of this is neatly packaged with her personable charm, humor, and uncanny ability -- as the photo above indicates -- to maintain her glamour, even when donning a space-cadet headset and "playing geek" with me for forty-five minutes. Both on-stage and off, Tish is a tireless worker for human rights, both at home and abroad, working for various charities and causes, including my own band's very successful -- a woman whom, at the time, Tish had only known for a few minutes before graciously volunteering her time, talents, and loyal fan base to our cause. In all, she is a superlative woman and humanitarian that I am proud to call my friend. Side note: It is my practice as of late to dub the guest artist's music underneath the interview to cover up edits, line noise, and other undesirable audio elements inherent with location recording. In the case of this week's show -- recorded live in a very crowded -- I discovered that the band playing in the next room during the recording was clearly audible and prominent enough that it couldn't be EQed or filtered out of the mix without distraction. Therefore it is important to note that the "bed music" you hear during the interview is not Tish Lyndsey's, but is actually the normal ambience of the venue and, to the best of my knoweldge, should be credited to Rob Dixon's group, . If I am mistaken in my identification/recollection, please correct me and I will give proper attribution. Links referenced in the show: Tish Lyndsey can be found here: / For more information about relief efforts in Darfur, check out 's web site. To read more about efforts to aid the children of Uganda, visit . Tish recently put on the benefit she mentioned for , surpassing her own goals, and raising over $1500 for the organization, which supports women in war-torn regions with financial and emotional aid, job-skills training, rights education and small business assistance so they can rebuild their lives. Tish is also affiliated with , a great promotional group that showcases little-known local artists. To continue with the activist theme of this episode, we also feature a promo for , which provides a somewhat different, often irreverent look at the news. Definitely worth checking out. And finally, once again we put the call out for supporters of Internet-based radio stations to visit and ask their congressmen to support bill HR2060, which will set webcaster licensing fees the same as sattellite radio licensing fees and will allow them to continue supporting artists by continuing to bring us great music that is ignored by most terrestrial radio stations.
Women and men are designed to work together in fulfilling God's mission on earth. Yet God's original intent for equal partnership has been so distorted that churches and organizations continually struggle to foster healthy mixed-gender ministry collaboration. Is it even possible to return to the Genesis ideal of co-laborers in today's contexts? Longtime ministry leader […] The post Rob Dixon: Women and Men Flourishing Together appeared first on Gravity Leadership.
