California-native Benny Madrigal describes his childhood in one word: active. He played nearly every sport imaginable, and by high school, he focused exclusively on running, both on the track and cross-country. Benny earned all-American honors and went on to attend Fresno Pacific University where he continued running and earned all-conference honors. Following graduation, Benny began coaching fellow runners and took a position as a long-term substitute teacher in a special education classroom. As he was adjusting to professional life, the then 22-year-old was blindsided by a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Fortunately, Benny didn't lose his competitive nature and soon found a supportive health care provider that helped him to manage his diabetes properly. He began training again and his career continued to advance. When it came to competing, Madrigal knew he needed to take it slowly and focused on setting realistic goals and taking small steps.

Rev. Dr. Kenda Creasy Dean reminds us in her new book, Innovating for Love, that we don't create new things for the sake of change, for innovation's sake, but rather so that we can love better. We are always finding new ways to love our neighbors in the ways Jesus calls us to love. Carlos Huerta, the Executive Director of the Center for Community Transformation in Fresno, certainly embodies Kenda's notion. A California-based entrepreneur who turned his attention and life's work to loving people well – listening to their stories and sharing his own, giving space for building connections, community, and voice. Carlos reminds us that innovation begins with paying attention. Wow! Could it be that simple? What might that look like in our own congregations, families, neighborhoods? What are we paying attention to? What are we noticing? Who might we partner with in our community to love better? We hope Carlos' story sparks a new conversation and perhaps a new idea for you as you lean into God's call for this season of your life and ministry. Please share with friends and colleagues and leave us a review. Since they started their positions around the same time and their schools are similar in many ways, these men are often linked together as leaders of our MB education initiatives. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. Both presidents share encouraging updates about the spiritual climates on their campuses, plus what they're currently working on to prepare future leaders of the church. Issues surrounding the cost of college and student loan debt are also high on their minds, and they share how both Fresno and Tabor are actually more affordable than you might think. Preparing young Christian leaders should be a crucial goal for all of us in the MB family, so be encouraged by these stories and remember to pray for Dr. Stephens and Dr. Janzen as they lead our education institutions.

Guests Ariel Serkin Ariel Serkin has been teaching since 2001, most recently as chemistry teacher at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. When Ariel started teaching chemistry after a decade as a history teacher, she looked for ways to take her skills as a historian and bring chemistry alive. She has been one of the lead contributors in the development of curriculum materials for Modeling Instruction in chemistry. Highlights [4:16] Brenda Royce: "students, if you ask them, how does this compare to that? They will always subtract the two values, just about 90% of the time" [4:33] Brenda Royce: "When they wanna know if they know something, they look to see if they got the right answer, but not the reasons behind it. Whereas of course, scientific community is the why. And ...what caused it to be that way. That's our definition of knowing." [9:58] Brenda Royce "we're distinguishing quantities that are single measurements and relationships that have two different measurements that are intricately linked to one another. " [14:52] Ariel Serkin "So our goal here is to take these abstract concepts and to make them a little more concrete and to put back these diagrams and actual manipulatives, ... to help build their conceptual understanding. As we take another step into the New Testament we come today to the gospel according to Mark. At first glance it may seem not that different than the account by which it was preceded—same song, different verse. However, that conclusion would be a huge mistake. One author introduces the second gospel this way: "Mark betrays great interest in what the historical Jesus actually said and did, what he suffered, and how he was vindicated by God. It is fair for us to assume that Mark had faithful traditions to rely on and that he preserved them with care. Yet Mark is much more than a historian; he is also a great storyteller. Taking up reliable traditions, Mark has creatively shaped them into a gripping short story, a mini-historical novel, a closet drama, a sermon, a crafted proclamation. Mark's Gospel tells God's good news (1:14–15). It does so with vividly portrayed characters, a fascinating plot, artfully employed literary devices (such as deliberate ambiguity, irony, foreshadowing, and paradox), and a powerful life-changing message" (Geddert, Mark, 16). The same author that wrote the above comments joins us today to help us understand Mark as a whole. Dr. Tim Geddert currently serves as professor in and director of the New Testament program and interim academic dean at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California.

All the way from California, Rob interviews Koach Karl Dewazien, a well known coach and celebrated author of the world famous ‘FUNdamental Soccer' series of books, a cornerstone for all youth based and small sided games. Highly educated and informed in his field, Koach Karl is the go-to professional for all things youth soccer.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Karls choice of career stems from his childhood as the son of a Polish mother, a nazi concentration camp survivor and a Lithuanian farmer father, captured by the Russians and the Nazis. He does not have a memory of his childhood, thus his impetus to provide children with a fulfilled, enjoyable youth. Aided by teachers and coaches Karl escaped a troubled youth and got successfully involved with sports. Sport holds lessons about responsibility that both Rob and Karl have experienced. Karl has played all the American sports, football, baseball, basketball and track and got a scholarship to Fresno Pacific as a soccer player.   Karls first memory is of his father weeping on board a battleship from Germany to New York as he arrived with the Statue of Liberty behind him.  Karl has written many soccer manuals on how to coach children in football including ‘FUNdamental Soccer' and ‘Miles and Miles of Soccer Smiles', co wrote with special needs children in mind.  Unless a child is allowed to practice, experiment and fail, there will be no innovation or development in sport. Karls coaching methods allow for children to express themselves in a less controlled, more fun manner.    BEST MOMENTS   ‘My wife calls me an ‘over worker'. It seems that all I do is try to focus on the children.' – Karl ‘I don't know if the English know what a punk is, but it's a teenager who's totally lost. Has no idea what to do with his life. I ended up being arrested quite a few times and, quite honestly, if it hadn't of been for sports I think I would have either ended up in jail, or as a very young dead individual.' – Karl ‘What you just said is littered with life lessons. The adversity that you suffered as a child, never mind your parents. Wow. The thing about sport, particularly for young men..' - Rob  ‘I'm not sure if you're going to believe me, but my earliest memory is where my parents had tried for the United States to come here thirteen times.' - Karl ‘Where do the best players come from in all sports? It's the kids that aren't being organised who come up with the unique way of running the sport just a little bit different. There's no one way of hitting a tennis ball or throwing a basketball or kicking a soccer ball.' – Karl ‘Here in the United States we've got child obesity. Children that are overweight. This purpose was birthed as a result of the devastating pains after the sudden loss of her mother. One of the lowest valley experiences and challenge Bridgette faced was the lonely road to grief recovery. Her World change in January 1995 when her mother (her best friend), went to be with the Lord. She relied on God who sustained her in this unfamiliar season as a newlywed in a new city. The loss of her Mother caused devastating emotional pain and depression, not knowing how she’d survive; but God. It was only by God’s Grace and Mercy that carried her through this dark and challenging time. As God continues to heal and restore her, Bridgette desires to provide a support group to others that share similar losses. She is passionate about using her experience to help share and inform every motherless daughter that they are not alone. Bridgette attended the College of Pasadena; Pasadena, CA where she obtained her Registered Nursing Degree. She currently attends Fresno Pacific University; Fresno, CA, pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing and Masters Public Health Administration and a current member of the Central Valley Black Nurses Association. Bridgette has always had a passion for serving others which is why Nursing came natural. She has worked as a nurse for over 20 years and currently employed as a Travel Nurse, bringing medical assistance to those who have limited mobility and transportation. She has a huge heart, a big smile and a love for God, her family and friends that is undeniably unconditional.

In this conversation with Brenda Royce, we hear about the things she learned while going through two summer workshops in modeling instruction and then teaching physics and later chemistry using modeling methods. Brenda talks about becoming aware of student misconceptions as well as learning to help students think through the observations they are making. Finally, she shares feedback she has received from students about how their own thinking and approach to school is changed after taking her class. Guest BioBrenda Royce has her B.A. in Chemistry from California State University, Fresno and M.A. in Education from Fresno Pacific University. She has taught high school physical sciences for 25 years after a 14-year career as an environmental analytical chemist and research assistant. She has been using Modeling Instruction in her classes since 1998. Brenda has conducted numerous training workshops in the practices of Modeling Instruction for pre-service and in-service teachers since 2000 in California, Arizona, Texas, and Pennsylvania as well as made presentations about Modeling Instruction at NSTA, WRNC, ChemEd, and BCCE conferences. She has been one of the lead contributors to the curriculum materials used in Modeling Instruction in chemistry since the project began in 2004. Highlights[3:15]: Brenda Royce, describing a workshop experience, “In the workshop we got a chance to see the method in action with the way that our workshop leaders interacted with us experience what the students who would be experiencing here, what the big ideas are that are being emphasized.” [6:07] Brenda Royce: “one of the things that modeling did for me was give me ideas about what students might not understand, the way they would misunderstand it, competing ideas they may have. And then tools for finding those and helping me hear them and helping the students recognize that there is a better way to think about it than what they were thinking.” [8:11] Brenda Royce: “And there it was — all of a sudden I was being fulfilled as a teacher. It’s like there’s no turning back from that once you know what that’s like.” [13:26] Brenda Royce: “I want a method of teaching and helping them that actually produces deep enduring understanding. And I found the tools to move that direction with modeling instruction.” Resources Brenda Royce transcription (https://sciencemodelingtalks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Brenda-Royce-transcription.pdf)

In this episode, Nathan Smith discusses the economics and history of migration and migration restrictions. Nathan is an Assistant Professor of Business Administration: Finance and Economics at Fresno Pacific University and regular blogger at Open Borders: The Case. We start the episode by discussing the economic impacts of Nathan’s own migration to Fresno. Students gain, as he adds to the supply of economics professors, other economists might lose from his competition in labour markets, people looking for parking near the University might lose, as he slightly reduces the supply of available parking spaces, and property owners gain from his demand for housing. In general, anyone Nathan transacts with gains from the transaction, while those who he competes with may suffer some slight loss. The big slogan among open borders advocates is that a significant reduction in migration restrictions could “double world GDP.” Nathan’s own most recent estimates show about a 91% increase world GDP, mainly because people would move from places where they can earn very little (e.g. places with dysfunctional institutions) to places where they can earn quite a bit more (e.g. places with well-functioning  institutions, complementary factors of production, highly developed networks of specialization and exchange, etc.). There are complementarities between human capital and unskilled labour. For instance, great managers are more productive when there are many workers to manage, and the workers are more productive where there are great managers. Nathan’s estimates indicate that as much as 44% of the world’s population could migrate under open borders. This may seem high, but even conservative estimates would put the number of migrants in the billions. While migration would be hard for the first few migrants, diaspora effects would start to make the process smoother and more desirable. In the 19th century, when international migration was less restricted and more common, migrants would form communities within their new countries: there would be a Polish neighbourhood, an Irish neighbourhood, an Italian neighbourhood, etc. These diaspora communities would function as gateways to the new culture, giving people a place to settle while they adjusted to the language and culture of their new country. Today, with the exception of migration within the EU, there are no countries with open borders. While migration is somewhat easier for high-skilled workers, there are still many barriers. People call high-skilled migration “brain drain,” but that is really a perverse way of characterizing it. Are workers’ “brains” their countries’ property? Are they to be kept as forced labourers for their countries’ benefit? In addition, the idea of brain drain is empirically questionable. If getting high skills is a ticket to a better life in a different country, the possibility of migrating increases the incentive to gain high skills, thus offsetting the loss of those who eventually emigrate. When people can migrate, or “vote with their feet,” this puts competitive pressure on governments. For instance, governments’ ability to institute very progressive taxation is curtailed by high earners’ ability to move elsewhere. That the Soviets had to build a Berlin Wall to keep their citizens from leaving shows that the possibility of exit was threatening to the Soviet government. Some restrictionists compare immigrants to the Visigoths in the Western Roman Empire. That is a poor analogy to modern migration, as the Visigoths migrated as a complete political entity. Not only do immigrants assimilate into the existing industries, they are disproportionately entrepreneurial, founding new industries wherever they go. Nikola Tesla, Andrew Carnegie, Sergey Brin, and Elon Musk were all immigrants. During the era of open borders, many of the innovations (such as Henry Ford’s assembly line) were designed to be complementary with all the low-skilled labour made available by migrants. Much of our modern technological development is focused on economizing on low-skilled labour, but low-skilled labour is only artificially scarce in wealthy countries. Many basic tasks that high earners do for themselves could be contracted out to low-skilled migrants. Childcare, for instance, could be very inexpensive under open borders; skilled parents would not need to leave the workforce to raise their children. Nathan sees hope for more open borders in the future. Migration restrictions are contrary to people’s consciences, which makes them difficult to enforce. This may slowly erode the restrictions. Furthermore, Christian churches are essentially supportive of open borders. There is hope for the world in moving towards open borders, but it will require moral will.
