This week, the great Justin Stillmaker returns to the show to close out our look at Colin's run of prestige projects in 2017 with the misbegotten but still Oscar nominated legal drama Roman J. Israel, Esq. The sophomore film from Nightcrawler writer/director Dan Gilroy, the film stars the god Denzel Washington as the titular lawyer, a civil rights activist struggling with a crisis of faith, and Colin the corporate lawyer he inspires to action. We get into Colin's penchant for taking unremarkable supporting roles in higher profiles of this ilk and his difficulties connecting with strong directors, and discuss the film's well intentioned but misguided politics, its muddled narrative resulting from post-production woes, and its frankly shameless similarities to Michael Clayton, a film originally pitched to Washington and written and directed by Gilroy's older brother. But mostly, we are here to valorize Denzel, the man all three of us think might just be the best movie star of all time. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Roman J. Israel (Denzel Washington) is an idealistic defense attorney whose life gets upended when his boss and mentor -- the legendary civil rights icon William Henry Jackson -- dies unexpectedly. He's then recruited to join a law firm led by George Pierce (Colin Farrell), an ambitious lawyer who was one of Jackson's former students. Israel's legacy of activism soon gets put to the test when he takes on the case of Langston Bailey, a young man accused of murdering a convenience store clerk. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the guys return to discuss "Roman J. Israel Esq." The legal drama starring Denzel Washington as Roman J. Israel Esq., a lawyer who has spent his career as the man behind the curtain so to speak. An eccentric legal savant, Israel must confront his hardline views of helping the poor and the disaffected when he is thrust into a world of money and power that he's only seen from a safe distance. When an opportunity for a different life comes into conflict with one's beliefs, this is where the character must decide if his lifelong held convictions are truly worth the sacrifices that he has made. Titus & Carl Eric Scott discuss Roman J. Israel, Esq., the movie that earned Denzel Washington his newest Oscar nomination, written & directed by Dan Gilroy (who was nominated as writer for Nightcrawler). This is the best film on civil rights & the question of justice in America's criminal defense law (plea bargaining is the central & symbolic issue)since at least Separate but equal (the Thurgood Marshall movie starring Sidney Poitier, writtern & directed by George Stevens Jr. in 1991). It is also an investigation in the sources of law & the yearning for divine justice. Critics have maligned the movie, misunderstanding it, but here's hoping the Oscars are going to give it a new life!
After some discussion of weather, moods, and major singing in the cold open, the guys get down to tha movies. ROMAN J. Note: Paul Rudd is the heavy in this one. Lastly, Kris and Dave talk about RED SPARROW (27:30), the new Jennifer Lawrence/Francis Lawrence collaboration with an ending you should see coming, but the preview audience was totes surprised.

Here's a nice high concept one for you. Annihilation will be just the second film ever directed by screenwriter-novelist Alex Garland, after 2015's Ex Machina. Which is almost enough to get us excited, but second features tend to be difficult: for every one that lives up to the promise of the maker's debut, there are a dozen sodden misfires. Hear us discuss our picks for the best directorial sophomore efforts ever. In Worth Mentioning, we catch up with Early Man, Black Panther and Roman J. Israel Esq.
RIP Johann Johannson. Dave and Jim review Phantom Thread, Kong: Skull Island, Logan, The Square, Roman J Israel Esq. and I, Tonya. Also generally buzz about life imitating art, hating on trump (standard) and an unsung hero who has dedicated his life into being a monkey.

Mike No. 1 has the intro flow of his life, and then we dive right into some big questions. Does Armie Hammerās snubbing help or hurt Chalametās chances at the Oscar? Is he too young to vote in his favor? Will Kaluuya and Chalamet split the new Academy vote? What is Daniel Day-Lewisā real life persona?? What can derail the favorite, Gary Churchill at this stage? And whoās the best actor of this generation, Denzel or DDL? Also Mike explains why heās so obsessed with Phantom Thread, both Mikes gush over how versatile Daniel Kaluuya is, Mike No. 1 does another Oscar Level impression of the best line from Darkest Hour, and we both wonder if Roman J Israel Esq is a good enough film to give Denzel a chance at redemption after last yearās denial for Fences. THIS WEEK: Your two favorite film reviewers, Audy and Elvin, are back! They first review the Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) written and directed, Denzel Washington (Malcolm X, and Training Day) starring Roman J. Israel Esq. While Elvin appreciated Denzel's acting and movie star ability, the movie overall for him was quite weak and not really that good of a legal thriller, while Audy felt director Dan Gilroy couldn't quite nail down the characterization realistically of Roman along with feeling the entire film was unfocused and contrived in its drama. Next, the fellas rebound to review the dark comedy crime drama from Martin McDonognah (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths) Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.Ā Both really loved the film and praised the direction, writing, and tour de force acting of Frances McDormand (Fargo and Burn After Reading), but also the acting efforts of costars Sam Rockwell (Moon) and Woody Harrelson (Money Train, White Men Can't Jump). Both state it's a must watch, and a Top 10 Film of the Year with strong chances of being a contender for best picture in the awards chase. Lastly, both guys review the new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War.Ā Elvin loved it and can't wait for the film to come out, whereas Audy was not so impressed. He expected more since this movie is the whole validation of the MCU's overall existence of being for the past 10 years.Ā Roman J. On this post Thanksgiving episode, Jon reviews Pixar's Coco, The Man Who Invented Christmas, and Roman J Israel Esq, then goes into a light discussion about the difference between sharing premises and outright ripping off in Hollywood.
Join Nick and Michael as they pour through law books to try and justify 'Roman J. Israel, Esq.'. The biggest crime committed in this movie was to vilify the title character, so the boys explore Dan Gilroy's motives, what sort of endings they would have liked to have seen, and the performances given by the talented cast. They also talk about their favorite Denzel movies and their favorite Colin Farrell movies before getting into a little Trailer Talk.
On this week's episode, Dave and Kris are still in the process of recovering from various plagues (Apologies for the occasional coughing!), but that doesn't slow them down from getting to the bottom of this week's releases. First up is Kris with an installment of Keepin' Up with the Jensons, revisiting THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER (4:50). Rather than rehash the plot, Kris ponders the point of it all, with some unsatisfying conclusions. Next up, Evan walks through ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ. (9:24), the new film from NIGHTCRAWLER director Dan Gilroy featuring Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell. It's not necessarily a bad film and it boasts some fine performances, but it ultimately suffers from a terminal case of not having a firm grasp on its own point, leading to an uneven tone and baffling plot twists. Last up is Dave and Kris with COCO (30:09), the new Pixar film guaranteed to make you cry. It's a delight to behold that is gorgeous and heartfelt despite some issues of predictability, and is a welcome addition to the Pixar tradition of finding worthwhile, emotional stories all around us.
