In this episode of “In Stride,” Sinead is joined by animal behavior expert Mary Hunter. Mary Hunter earned a Master of Science in Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas in 2013 and a biology degree from the University of Chicago. During her time at UNT, Mary spent three years studying animal behavior and training with Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz, with whom she published her first book, PORTL: The Portable Operant Research and Teaching Lab. Mary serves as president of The Art and Science of Animal Training, a Texas based non-profit organization. Mary currently provides animal training and animal behavior services in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and teaches undergraduate and graduate classes in the behavior analysis department at the University of North Texas as an adjunct instructor. In this episode, Mary discusses various topics related to training and animal behavior, including: • Using PORTL to teach people how to train behaviors using non-verbal communication. • The dynamic between the teacher and learner and the shift in responsibility duing the training process. • Establishing a pattern of planning and doing and why it should be kept separate. • Problem solving through deconstruction and addressing the missing or incorrect components before putting the pieces back together. Mary earned her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Chicago and a master's degree in behaviour analysis from the University of North Texas. She consults with people and their pets, working mainly with dogs and horses. In addition, Mary teaches online courses for professional animal trainers and others interested in the science of behaviour through her company, Behavior Explorer.  Mary has taught classes at the University of North Texas as an adjunct instructor. Her interest in instructional design led her to convert an upper-level undergraduate class into a self-paced, mastery-based course using Dr Fred Keller's Personalized System of Instruction.  In 2019, Mary and Dr Jesús Rosales-Ruiz published their first book, PORTL: The Portable Operant Research and Teaching Lab. Mary's primary research interests include studying the process of shaping and developing better methods for teaching both people and animals. Laura Perkins resides in Michigan with her husband, 2 dogs and 2 cats. They are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their baby daughter in December!   Currently, Laura provides 1-1 behavior consulting for families and their dogs through her business Laura Perkins Animal Behavior.  She also provides virtual services through Kiki Yablon Dog Training.  For the first time this summer Laura served as a TA for Susan Friedman's Living and Learning with Animals course.   Laura began training dogs as a young kind in 4-h where she was introduced to what we would today call “balanced training”.  Her “aha” moment regarding clicker training and positive reinforcement based methods was via an agility instructor who used Laura's dog Sammy as a demo to free shape getting on the table and laying down.  This was the moment that led Laura to pursue an understanding of how this stuff works!   Laura graduated from the University of Illinois in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in Animal Science.  She wasn't satisfied with her learning regarding behavior specifically so she went on to pursue a master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas where she graduated in 2012.  There she studied with Jesús-Rosales-Ruiz and was an active member of the ORCA lab (Organization for Reinforcement Contingencies with Animals).   Between graduate school and now, Laura has worked at a doggy daycare, has served as the behaviorist on staff at a county shelter in Oregon, and has continued to grow her business.   Laura's dog hobbies are doing nosework, obedience and occasionally some at-home agility with her two dogs Dan (Herding Dog Multi Blend) and Doug (Border Collie).  Outside of dog training, Laura enjoys hiking, gardening and is learning to play the guitar. This episode is the first of several Holiday presents we have created for you. Our guest is Dr Michaela Hempen. She will be sharing the work she's been doing with her quarter horse mare, Blondie. Blondie is a cribber. If you aren't familiar with that term, cribbing, or crib biting as it is also called, refers to a stereotypic behavior in which the horse closes its teeth around a surface such a fence board or a feed bucket and then arches its neck so it can suck in air. Cribbing has been viewed as a pathology. People try to prevent horses from cribbing by putting cribbing collars on them. The collars make it uncomfortable to crib, but most horses end up cribbing anyway. Michaela decided to look at cribbing through a different lens. With the help of Dr Jesús Rosales Ruiz she was able to show that cribbing responds to changes in the environment. It's not something pathological in the animal. It's a habit you can change. In this episode Michaela describes the procedure she used to teach Blondie a new repertoire of behaviors to replace her cribbing habit. Her work is exciting not just for owners of cribbers, but for anyone who has habits they'd like to change. That refers to their horse's habits and even potentially to their own. So when the calendar clicks over into 2022 and you're thinking about your New year's resolutions, think about Blondie and the work Michaela is describing in this podcast.

My special guests this episode are Dr Jesus Rosales-Ruiz and Mary Hunter. As hosts of the Art and Science of Animal Training Conference, they bring together behavior scientists and animal trainers to inspire both communities and elevate the conversation. The theme of the most recent conference was negative reinforcement. In this podcast we revisit this topic and so much more. Our discussion of negative reinforcement meant more exploration of Constructional Aggression Treatment (C.A.T). Jesus and Mary shared some great stories from the lab (even one about training a cockroach!) that are important for trainers to hear. Sometimes what occurs in a laboratory experiment looks very different from what trainers do. A great example was our discussion of counter conditioning. We also discuss the importance of function-based interventions and how positive reinforcement can have better effect once you take care of the negative reinforcement contingency already in place. This also tied into the issue surrounding coercive applications of positive reinforcement and how to remove those barriers. Jesus and Mary share some relatable real-life examples to help illustrate these issues trainers face, for example when animals show fear responses to new objects or household items. There were so many titles I could have given this episode. Another good one would have been: “We Haven’t Known What We’ve Known”. That’s a quote from Dr. Jesús Rosales Ruiz. It refers to this huge jig saw puzzle we’ve all been working on that’s called animal training. Episode 124: Mary Hunter Pt 1: Growing Cilantro - Yes It Is About Training! This week begins a series with Mary Hunter. Mary is a horse owner, a training coach for both horses and dogs, and an applied behavior analyst. She has a great blog: StaleCheerios.com. She organizes the annual Art and Science of Animal Training conference, and she together with Dr. Jesús Rosales Ruiz, she has written the PORTL Manual. She was also our guide for the Listen and Learn Audio course on Applied Behavior Analysis. Just before Thanksgiving we spent a delightful afternoon catching up with Mary. We started out talking about gardening and the growing of cilantro. That led us to extinction and then to shaping and finding approximations that create early success.

This week’s episode explores the stimulus control quadrants developed by Dr. Jesús Rosales Ruiz. When I say stimulus control many of you are probably thinking about the four criteria that are used to judge if a cue is under full stimulus control. This is not what Jesús is talking about. He’s looking instead at the conditions under which learning occurs. It’s a fascinating discussion. Don’t fight extinction is an important part of the stimulus control quadrants. Welcome to the 9th episode of The Dog Real Talk. Today I’m honored to host amazing Jesús Rosales-Ruiz, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Behavior Analysis at University of North Texas. I had a pleasure to talk to dr. Rosales-Ruiz during ClickerExpo Luminos in UK in 2018. I had a chance to ask dr. Jesús about the topic of extinction. Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1995 under the direction of Dr. Donald M. Baer. During his graduate training he also worked closely with Dr. Ogden R. Lindsley. Dr. Rosales-Ruiz’s areas of interest include antecedent control of behavior, generalization, behavioral cusps, fluency-based teaching, treatment of autism, teaching of academic behavior, animal training, rule-governed behavior and contingency-shaped behavior. He has served on several editorial boards, including the Journal of Precision Teaching, the European Journal of Behavior Analysis, and the International Journal of Psychology and Psychological Therapy. Last week, as you’ll recall, we had a special guest - a surprise visit from Dr. Jesus Rosales Ruiz. Dominique and I were discussing some reading she’s been doing in Paul Chance’s book, Learning and Behavior. We were stumbling over the differences between schedules of reinforcement, rates of reinforcement, and variable reinforcement. Each one is describing different aspect of reinforcement, but it’s easy to get them tangled up so you forget which definition goes where. They remind me of all the power cords that wrap around the top of my desk. As much as I try to keep them tidy and separate, they seem to twist themselves together into a confusing knot. At the beginning of last week’s episode Dominique and I were getting ourselves twisted into our own version of a knot as we began a discussion of these terms. So I enlisted the help of Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz to help sort us out. On the last night of the Art and Science of Animal training Conference in Dallas Texas, we found a semi quiet room in which to record. My intent was to send Dominique just a ten or fifteen minute quick audio postcard, but once we got started, it was hard to stop! So here is the second half of my conversation with Jesús. Enjoy!

We were certainly getting twisted into a confusing knot as we began a discussion of these terms. So I enlisted the help of Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz to help sort out them out. In our previous podcast we talked about Ken Ramirez’s suggestion to do it differently. He was referring to the training of husbandry procedures, especially as they relate to medical care. In this podcast we’re going to see how that phrase applies to performance work. We interrupted the conversation just as Dominique was about to talk about patterns. She had been talking one trial quitters. Dr. Jesús Rosales Ruiz introduced that phrase to us in the July webinar. He went on to talk about the ABCs of training, but in a way Dominique hadn’t thought about before. So we’ll pick up again where we left off. Our conversation is going to take us to patterns and the microshaping strategy, to techniques for building duration, and to a discussion that’s centered around what to do when your animal says “no I don’t want to.” We’ll jump back in at the point where Dominique is talking about several wow moments from the webinar with Jesús.

Heads are spinning in the best way possible after the June 30th webinar with Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz. We taped this podcast the following day so naturally we couldn’t help but begin with a review of some of the key concepts Jesús covered. He gave us a packed webinar which gave us a great launching point for a discussion that began with the use of jargon when describing different training techniques and led on to loopy training, the difference between emotions and emotional responses, and macro versus micro training.

It was Dr. Jesús Rosales Ruiz who gave us the name “Loopy Training”. That’s a name that seems on first glance to be silly and frivolous but it's really grounded in the very sophisticated concept of movement cycles. This week’s podcast is part of a long conversation Dominique Day and I were having one afternoon in late May. In this podcast we continue on with the discussion of poisoned cues. We explore how loopy training can help retrain behaviors that have poisoned cues attached to them. That takes us into a discussion of what it means to have clean loops and how to use loopy training to create a balance between calm energy and enthusiasm in your animal learners. Not surprisingly food delivery becomes part of the conversation. We end with cue communication - an important topic which will be the main focus of podcast #13.

Karen Pryor coined the term “poisoned cue”. She commented that behavior analysts can easily set up experiments that look at pure positive or pure negative reinforcement. But Karen said that’s not the real world. The real world is filled with mixed consequences. What happens when a cue can lead to good things happening or to bad things happening but you don’t know which it is going to be? That’s the poisoned cue. Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz explored this question in a study he conducted with one of his graduate students at the University of North Texas. In this podcast Dominique Day and Alexandra Kurland describe his findings and discuss how this relates to horse training.
