Synchronous systems produce AC current; Converter-based systems produce DC that must be converted into AC. This is achieved through software and algorithms. On the other hand, inherent inertia is achieved by the physical, rotating mass of the machinery involved in synchronous power generation. Among patients with colorectal cancer and synchronous liver metastases, the subgroup with a primary cancer in the rectum is especially challenging. Compared with colon cancer, most patients with stage IV rectal cancer will have locally advanced primary tumors at increased risk for obstructive and/or post-operative complications resulting in delays in systemic therapy. In this episode from the HPB team at Behind the Knife, listen in on the discussion about treatment sequencing for synchronous liver metastasis from rectal cancer Hosts Anish J. Jain MD (@anishjayjain) is a current PGY3 General Surgery Resident at Stanford University and a former T32 Research Fellow at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Timothy E. Newhook MD, FACS (@timnewhook19) is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Surgical Oncology. He is also the associate program director of the HPB fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Jean-Nicolas Vauthey MD, FACS (@VautheyMD) is Professor of Surgery and Chief of the HPB Section, as well as the Dallas/Fort Worth Living Legend Chair of Cancer Research in the Department of Surgical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Learning Objectives · Develop an understanding of the three treatment sequences for resection of disease in patients with synchronous liver metastasis from a primary rectal cancer (reverse, combined, and classic approach) · Develop an understanding of the benefits, risks, and nuances of each of the three treatment sequences · Develop an understanding of which patient cases each treatment sequence is ideal for as well as which cases they are not suitable for. *This episode was intended to be released on Monday, December 30, 2024. While the video version was released on YouTube on that date, apparently I forgot to complete the process of scheduling it to go out on audio platforms, and only noticed the error on Friday, January 3, 2025. I apologize for the error. In this solo episode, I close out the year by reflecting on the significant events and personal growth I experienced throughout 2024. I ask myself questions about my guiding values and decision-making processes when faced with challenges, and explore what I would like to take with me and to leave behind as we enter 2025. I share a bit about personal hardships I faced this past year, including a choppy start to the year as the highs of a paradisiacal vacation ended in worsening illness culminating in a new low. This experience led me to seek even more novel treatments for my symptoms, specifically a stellate ganglion block procedure, which I discuss in detail, highlighting its impact on my nervous system and overall well-being.As I navigated my health struggles, I made the difficult decision to step back from therapy to focus on consulting, allowing me to prioritize my health while still providing support to parents of gender-confused youth, eventually resulting in developing my course, ROGD Repair. I delve into the importance of listening to our bodies and trusting the process, which ultimately led to the development of this niche program that applies my strengths in psychology and communication to the novel challenges facing families today.Throughout the episode, I also confront the challenges of being in the public eye, including the unexpected backlash I faced in May, and how I am learning to find humor and perspective in difficult situations. As I look forward to 2025, I share my intentions for the new year, including wedding planning and the launch of continuing education courses for therapists, all while maintaining a focus on connection and community. 00:00 Start[00:01:18] New Year's intentions and reflections.[00:06:49] Navigating personal health challenges.[00:09:30] Stellate ganglion block experience.[00:12:55] Effects of SGB medical procedure.[00:17:10] Therapy vs. Consulting Transition.[00:23:39] Niche consulting for parents.[00:25:36] Friendly fire and hidden enemies.[00:30:24] Relationships with podcast listeners.[00:33:09] Healing through positive relationships.[00:37:16] Nature of evil.[00:44:09] Synchronous communication versus asynchronous.[00:46:16] Finding ikigai and gratitude.[00:51:32] Embracing the aging process.[00:53:17] Non-toxic lifestyle choices.[00:57:44] Ego-dystonic versus ego-syntonic.[01:01:51] Healing through humor and levity.[01:06:21] Clear-eyed compassion and eye health.[01:09:06] Growth and perspective in life.[01:14:00] The power of positive perception.[01:17:01] ROGD Repair community benefits.[01:17:56] Desiderata by Max Ehrmann. Suddenly a sound rings out, stopping you in your tracks. Panicking, you search for where it could be coming from. It's your phone, and if you're like a quarter of 18 to 34-year-olds in a recent British study, you probably won't answer it. The same study found that 70% of people in this age group prefer text messages to phone calls. Why do so many people hate phone calls? While previous generations grew up using landlines to talk to their friends, smartphone-equipped younger people have grown up accustomed to using text messages, group chats and voice notes for social conversations. What these media have in common is that they are asynchronous – they don't need to happen in real time. When you can craft a reply free of interruption, you have greater control over your contributions to a conversation. It also means that you can reply when it's best for you. Synchronous communication, like phone calls or face-to-face conversations, can lead people to feel a loss of control and the corresponding anxiety. Coupled to this is that fact that many young people report associating phone calls, particularly those without prior warning, with bad news. This means that new social codes are being established. Many people will now text someone to see if they're available to take a phone call. If someone doesn't feel able to sum something up in a few short messages, they might leave a long voice note. Could it be that not wanting to intrude on someone with a sudden phone call is just a question of good manners and respecting someone's boundaries? Maybe, but this doesn't mean that anxiety around communication has been eliminated. Texting may be asynchronous, but many people report tensions from being 'left on read' – when you know someone has read your message, but they don't, or won't, reply. Many would agree with British writer Daisy Buchanan, who reminds us how picking up the phone to talk to someone can be far more effective at relieving tension than a series of awkward messages. So, are these new social codes better at respecting boundaries, or are they just creating a whole new set of potential anxieties? 发短信available 有空的intrude on 打扰respect boundaries 尊重他人的界限left on read 已读不回,发出的消息显示已读但没有收到回复pick up 接听电话

This week, a stream polluted by an old coal mine at a former golf club is getting cleaned up thanks to a land trust and a new pot of federal money. Plus, we have news about why it's hard for states to access other federal mine reclamation money. We also talk with an author of a new report that says chemical recycling of plastics isn't all it's cracked up to be for the economy or the planet. We head to a festival celebrating a very special population of fireflies in Pennsylvania that flash in a pattern. We have news about Pa.'s budget, heat islands in Pa. cities, and a new dark sky park in the works.
Every year for two weeks between mid-May and mid-June, Congaree National Park in South Carolina is home to a fairy-tale-like display of flashing lights. These rhythmic performances happen all because of thousands of fireflies, flashing their belly lanterns at exactly the same time. According to the National Park Service, there are just three types of these synchronous fireflies in North America, making the experience all the more magical for the lucky visitors who get the chance to see them. Firefly scientists and enthusiasts hope these displays in places like Congaree will inspire people to care about other kinds of fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, in the U.S., which are not as well-studied – or well-protected – as synchronous ones. Some community scientists are already taking on this mission with projects like the Firefly Atlas, where volunteers can help survey for fireflies and report sightings. This story was originally reported for NPR by science correspondent Pien Huang. In this second part of a three-part series of the TTL podcast, Mon-Chaio and Andy dive into what research has to say about remote working. They explore various aspects including the impact of remote work on mental health, performance, synchronous vs. asynchronous communication, and team cohesion. Highlighting a study published in Nature titled 'Virtual Communication Curbs Creative Idea Generation', they discuss how virtual settings can limit creative idea generation compared to in-person settings due to narrowed visual fields and cognitive focus. However, they note that virtual communication might have a small positive effect on selecting the best idea from a generated pool. The conversation also touches on the importance of high synchronicity in media for effective team convergence and conveyance, and the effects of remote work on coworker relationships and productivity. FOUR ACTIONABLE LEADERSHIP TAKEAWAYS When getting in person, try to dress the same "level" as your customer's office attire. When in doubt, dress one notch nicer. Use the right communication tool for the job. Synchronous conversation wins. Use this decision criteria for when to meet your customer in-person: size of deal, proximity to your location, and stage in the sales process (discovery phase is ideal). Let's really push forward this conversation about online learning, shall we?So many times we either vilify training to be a yoga teacher online or we act like all online learning is the exact same. Both of those things aren't true, as we discussed with my guest today, Zaria Rochester.Zaria has trained to be a yoga pro in many spaces, both in-person and online-only training, so she offers the unique perspective of someone who has actually trained in both modalities—not just taken one and punched down on the other.Take a listen.KEY RESOURCES*We are often really snobby about the value of online learning vs. in-person learning. We tend to make people who learn online feel like they are less than those of us who trained in person*Online learning makes our industry entry point much more accessible. This is one of the huge benefits of online learning.*It is uncomfortable to learn the skills to teach well in an online setting. Especially for those of us who never thought we would be teaching online, it is easy to say that “online” is not as good as in-person learning. But really, we are saying we need to sit with the discomfort of learning a new skill set in order to share our teaching with more people.*Teaching online requires us to be much more prepared than we need to be in person. This means that the “read the room” technique of teaching that many of us use–myself included here, doesn't apply in an online setting.*Synchronous vs. Asynchronous learning matters. Typically we need to have some sort of synchronous learning in order to ensure that quality teachers are coming out of training programs–but the Yoga Alliance requires very little of this. If you think that should change, make sure you tell them by reaching out at help.yogaalliance.org*Having a teacher who can guide us as we sort through yoga is critically important, be that teacher online or in person. If you don't have that kind of relationship with someone, it will behoove you to seek that out.*The current Training model within the industry is a lot like learning to swim on the side of the pool. Making sure you lean into mentorship after your training is over can make a big difference in your first couple of years of yoga teaching.*Finally, an important quote Zaria repeated from Ava Taylor. It may take up to seven years to really get a handle on building a career as a yoga pro. Be prepared–the more we repeat this the more we have realistic expectations for our entire industry.RESOURCESWorking In Yoga WebsiteWorking In Yoga NewsletterZaria's WebsiteSunlight Streams Blog

For mission-critical applications in various industries like banking, capital markets, insurance and healthcare, there is a need to support highly available synchronous data replication to ensure high level platform protection and availability. Providing this functionality is key for a business to function unhindered. The cost of data unavailability can be significant to a business, with some estimates measuring the impact at several thousand dollars per minute and upwards of six figures or more if the unavailability lasts for an hour or more. And this doesn't take into account recoverability to the latest dataset right before the failure. With these types of dollar amounts, the inability to bring the system back to its latest data point can have a tremendous impact on the viability of a business. Customers need RPOs of zero to help ensure any incident that takes down a primary site will allow a secondary disaster recovery site to be brought online quickly with the latest copy of the data.So without further ado, drum roll please…Nutanix™ Files Storage now supports establishing a metro cluster with our 4.4 release. Live from the floor of the March 2023 IHRSA Trade Show in San Diego, host Pete Moore welcomes back (for the third time!) the team of Austin Cohen and Justin Turetsky. FlexIt's mission is to empower everyone with flexible Interconnected Health experiences, including Virtual Personal Training, Virtual Nutrition, and Virtual Physical Therapy – Wherever, Whenever®. The platform is the ultimate tool for motivation and accountability, helping users reach their health and wellness goals through live, 1-on-1, private sessions with elite fitness and wellness professionals and custom features designed and optimized for training. Each client's program is customized based on their needs, lifestyle, and goals and delivered on a proprietary platform designed and optimized for wellness experiences. During the pandemic, the team successfully brought clubs and trainers to a virtual marketplace, connecting consumers with fitness experts and incorporating club brands. As things progressed and the pandemic started to fade, they also recognized the need for preventive health services in the growing field of Telehealth. They saw there was a chance to bridge the gap between consumers who don't necessarily need a doctor but want convenient access to fitness and wellness experts. "I think for us, at our core, we've always tried to have a consistent revenue generating model that is built on good business practices and be able to cut back some of our spend, which was focused on growth and marketing," states Cohen. They offer a wide range of fitness pillars, including high-intensity training, boxing, strength training, and physical therapy. The platform even provides access to doctors of physical therapy for specialized care, such as pre and postnatal training or injury recovery. FlexIt has also been recognized and awarded by prominent industry publications including Men's Health, Runner's World, and U.S. News & World Report, and was named a "Most Innovative Product of 2021" by Innovation & Tech Today. Some key moments: [00:03:58] Digitizing live two-way fitness experiences for all. [00:08:03] Industry evolving, not pivoting or changing. [00:11:17] Entrepreneurial question: different pulse, confluence, coexistence. [00:14:12] Challenging times for business leaders, uncertain future. [00:17:15] Synchronous communication leads to personalization and immersion. A few key takeaways: FlexIt has transitioned from focusing solely on virtual personal training to embracing interconnected health. They offer four core pillars of nutrition, physical therapy, low-impact wellness, and fitness training, spanning 28 modalities. The company has developed its own proprietary technology that optimizes the online personal training experience. Trainers can interact with clients as if they were physically in the same space, using features like pre-recorded videos, drawing on the screen, and sending workout plans. They draw inspiration from the telehealth industry, where virtual consultations have become more common. They aim to fill the void for preventive health services, providing convenient access for individuals who don't necessarily need a doctor but still want expert guidance in their fitness and wellness journey. Their technology is applicable in both B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) contexts. Their tech is appropriate for use on corporate wellness platforms as well as their direct-to-consumer platform. FlexIt's ability to adapt their business model as the market evolves is highlighted. They used a methodical approach to educate their clients on the changes and benefits that come with their evolving services. Click here to download transcript. Synchronous germination is the goal—uniform seedlings that germinate within a 48-hour window and grow uniformly throughout production. Dr. Will Healy joins host Bill Calkins for a deep dive into the germination process with a focus on pansy and viola crops. Will begins by explaining why water and oxygen are the most critical elements in pansy germination, as well as the importance of hydration levels from Day 0-4. He then shares ways to reduce the potential of creating a “gel layer” on seeds, instead moving them into the germination stage effectively. Next, Will explains best practices for flat filling with uniform moisture and ways to avoid dry spots and “checkerboarding” in young plant production. Moving down the seeding line, pansies and violas should be top coated with a coarse media but distribution of the media is the key element. At the end of the line should be a water tunnel but, again, there are protocols to follow, and Will explains them all. Lastly, when your plug trays are filled, there's always the discussion of whether bench production or a chamber is optimal. Will explains pros and cons for both. This week's EYE ON NPI packs quite a punch, it's the powerful TI TPS61033 Fully-Integrated Synchronous Boost Converter (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/texas-instruments/tps61033-synchronous-boost-converter), a souped-up DC/DC regulator with a generous 5.5 A internal switch, in a tiny SOT package. This chip will chomp through your power generation needs, with a specialty at boosting Li Ion / LiPoly batteries to 5V at up to 2 A continuous current. The TI TPS series (https://www.digikey.com/short/m345b8wt) of boost converters is well-known here at Adafruit, they're the basis for our popular PowerBoost series of boards (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=powerboost) - all-in-one switching converters that will take a LiPoly battery in and give you 5V out for making charging phones or dev-boards easy. We've been using the TPS61090 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS61090RSAR/566911) on boards like the PowerBoost 500 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1903), that has an internal 2 Amp switch. For the PowerBoost 1000 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2030) we go with a TPS61030 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS61030RSAR/610198), with an internal 4A switch. Synchronous boosters with internal switches help engineering in three ways: disabling the chip fully disconnects the output and input without having to worry about the conducting body diode of a FET, it reduces BOM costs because there's two/three fewer components to worry about, and of course it makes layout easier and smaller. For a while, we've had folks ask for a PowerBoost 2000: a board that will take Lipo input and provide 2A output, which would let it easily power single-board computers like a Raspberry Pi 4. Finally there's a chip that will do the job! The TI TPS61033 (https://www.digikey.com/short/vt3wj7t7) really is a fully-integrated synchronous boost converter, only a few passive components are required: input and output bulk capacitors and, of course, an inductor. If you want to operate at 5V fixed output, you don't even need a feedback resistor divider! And, it's in a tiny package compared to the TPS610x0 chips, with thoughtful pin ordering so you can lay out the PCB on 2 layers with chunky fat copper pours to reduce inductance and act as a heat sink. The datasheet specifically steps through component selection for making a 5V 2A output from single cell battery using a 4x4mm 1uH inductor so we're pretty confident that this would make a great PB2K. If you have a rechargeable battery project that needs 5 V output and you want to go with a rock-solid booster that can provide 2 Amps of current, the TI TPS61033 Fully-Integrated Synchronous Boost Converter (https://www.digikey.com/short/vt3wj7t7) will make you jump for joy. Best of all, it's in stock! Thousands of them! All at DigiKey for immediate shipment. Order today and DigiKey will pack them up and send them off tonight so that you'll be boosting your batteries by tomorrow afternoon.

Let me ask you: Do you know what a research synchronous language is? What about hybrid systems? Last try: have you heard of Zelus, or ProbZelus? If you answered “no” to one of the above, then you're just like me! And that's why I invited Guillaume Baudart for this episode — to teach us about all these fascinating topics!Guillaume is a researcher in programming languages who works on ProbZelus, a probabilistic extension to Zelus, itself a research synchronous language to implement hybrid systems. To simplify, Zelus is a modeling framework to simulate the dynamics of systems both smooth and subject to discrete dynamics — if you've ever worked with ODEs, you may be familiar with these terms. If you're not — great, Guillaume will explain everything in the episode! And I know it might sound niche, but this kind of approach actually has very important applications — such as proving that there are no bugs in a program.Guillaume did his PhD at École Normale Supérieure, in Paris, working on reactive programming languages and quasi-periodic systems. He then worked in the AI programming team of IBM Research, before coming back to the École Normale Supérieure, working mostly on reactive and probabilistic programming. In his free time, Guillaume loves spending time with his family, playing the violin with friends, and… cooking! Our theme music is « Good Bayesian », by Baba Brinkman (feat MC Lars and Mega Ran). Moving From A Culture of Efficiency to A Culture of Effectiveness Acting and improv skills are similar to soft skills in sales— leading with empathy and understanding your audience and your customer is paramount. Sales leaders need to build a strong sales culture and eliminate mediocrity, which starts with the willingness to invite, embrace, and accept feedback. Synchronous conversations are making a comeback. Whether you get coffee with a prospect in your own town or fly to your prospect's city to close a deal, face-to-face interactions are invaluable. Sales isn't an easy profession, and leaders should be honest and transparent with their teams about the work required to close deals. Efficiency does not equal effectiveness. Sales technology should focus on making people better, not just faster. Sales organizations need to adapt to changes in the market and rethink what's working and what's not. In this podcast, Mike Cabot and Jeb Blount discuss the challenges of sales in the current climate, including the impact of technology and the need for emotional intelligence when dealing with analytical stakeholders. They also emphasize the importance of celebrating small victories and providing feedback to improve performance. Sales Is Like Acting— Empathy Is Essential As a child, Mike Cabot and his sister starred in a local cable television show for seven years. Later on, Cabot gained acting experience both in theater and through featuring in commercials. In his sales career, he has been able to leverage the improv skills he learned from acting at an early age to connect, engage in deep listening, and show empathy to prospects and clients. The job of a sales professional isn't just to sell a product or service, it's to help people. And in order to truly help people, great sales professionals have to be great empathizers. The same can be said for actors. To tell a story convincingly, an actor must take on the character's persona. She must step into their shoes and see the world through their eyes. Otherwise, it's not authentic. Empathy is a critical skill for sales professionals, and acting is an excellent way to hone this skill by putting yourself in someone else's shoes. This is what sets the best salespeople apart. They can quickly and easily see the world through someone else's eyes and adjust their messaging, style, and strategy accordingly. The Show Must Go On Often, people make excuses for why they can't sell, such as a lack of leads or poor marketing. As sales professionals, we must deliver for the audience in front of us, no matter what. Embracing this idea is crucial in building a strong sales culture. Mastering the same soft skills that improv actors use is critical because you must listen not only with your ears, but also with your eyes and intuition. On stage, if you weren't paying attention, you wouldn't know how to respond when something gets thrown back at you. Dealing With Analytical Stakeholders Buyers use emotions to make decisions. Tap into their emotions and stories to meet their needs. Engaging with analytical stakeholders in sales requires a thoughtful and empathetic approach. Understanding the different levels and roles within the stakeholder groups is crucial, as each individual has unique concerns and priorities. While these stakeholders are analytical by nature, it's important to recognize that emotions play a significant role in their decision-making process. By tapping into their emotional needs and sharing relevant stories, sales professionals can connect with them on a deeper level and demonstrate how their product or service can help solve their problems. Building trust and showing the value of saving time or avoiding negative outcomes are key strategies for engaging with these stakeholders. Synchronous communication occurs when two people speak to each other at the same time. Why might asynchronous communication be more effective? This week, Shawn & Ivan speak with Dr. Oliver Viner of Digital Practice about asynchronous client communication. Oliver recommends The Lex Friedman Podcast with Sam Altman (https://bit.ly/3NWY22Z). Contingent reinforcement is great and all. But what if I could have the reinforcement delivered at the same time as my target behavior? Despite having been described for some time, very little has been done to explore the potential use of synchronous reinforcement. Fortunately, Dr. Claudia Dozier joins us this week to get this new line of research up to speed by discussing two of her recent publications on the subject. So listen in while eating a big bag of your favorite snack! This episode is available for 1.0 LEARNING CEU. Articles discussed this episode: Diaz de Villegas, S.C., Dozier, C.L., Jess, R.L., & Foley, E.A. (2020). learning lessons about deeply decarbonized electricity markets from around the world including optimal prices in non-convex markets, reliability insurance, and system securityFarhad Billimoria, Conleigh Byers, PhD, Ahlmahz Negash, PhD, and Paul Dockery discuss adaptation of market design for the energy transition including fat tails and increased exposure to extremes; batteries and price responsive demand; natural gas fragility and marginal pricing; and inverter-driven resources and system security. Then the team plays a new game where they synthesize expert explanations of convex vs non-convex pricing and reliability insurance. The Big Themes:Purpose-built solutions centered on people: Managing resources to deliver for customers can be a challenge for companies with large services organizations. Certinia's solutions are purpose-built, focusing on the people and the service economy business, rather than product ID, which was formerly considered to be the "center of the universe."Synchronous process flows: When looking at process flows, most companies find that they have silos of automation, and the "as quoted" verse "as delivered" aspects generally are not in alignment. "By having a system that runs all the way from opportunity to renewal, we [Certinia] bring those things into alignment with each other and have the "as quoted" and "as delivered" very much in sync with each other," notes Brown.Automation to enhance opportunity: When speaking with service economy workers, it is clear that "low-value work makes them crazy." Automating this work enables service economy workers to do more of what they love, like being in front of customers and providing "intellectual horsepower." Certinia applies automation as a means of optimizing the employee experience, too, and having a "great, enriched career journey." The Big Quote: "We are, kind of, starting a new chapter in our company's history with the rebranding to Certinia... and everything that we've developed up to now is widely increased the aperture of who we are. If you look at it across the spectrum of all those different products, we now are a full end-to-end provider. And hence, Certinia, as our new name. And we think it probably reflects not only the company we are today, it's the company we aspire to be. And so working with the large customers and the mid-tier customers that we have, we listen very carefully to what they need to get certainty in their environment, how to manage the very large and complex services organizations, and ultimately to have success. So we think the rebranding is the next chapter of our history, we think it's a really important thing to do, because it reflects the nature of who we are. But more importantly, we see big things in our future."
Maybe you call it a daily stand up. Maybe it's a huddle, or even a status meeting. But has your team stopped to ask if these daily meetings are really working for them?Today's episode digs into the benefits and pitfalls of the remote stand up – from aligning with your team, to leading with empathy, to meetings that really could have been an email. You'll hear from Marshall Walker Lee in defence of daily stand ups, with support from Matan Talmi, the co-founder of Spinach.io, and Kate Sullivan, head of legal at EasyJet. New debater David Shaw says ditch the synced meetup, with support from corporate humor comedian and Supermeme.ai co-founder, Sanjeev Yencee.

Nightmare Magazine - Horror and Dark Fantasy Story Podcast (Audiobook | Short Stories)
It could have been ketchup. Or sriracha sauce. V8 or cranberry juice or pinot noir. It could have been Karo syrup with food coloring as it had been in Carrie or Bosco Chocolate Syrup as in Psycho. It didn't matter. My dissertation had been on suspension of disbelief in scripted violence, and I knew that as long as the audience agreed that the red scarf pulled from Juliet's breast was her blood dripping from Romeo's dagger, it didn't matter that it was a scarf. | Copyright 2022 by Shannon Scott.
