#Clown #AmericanClown #CircusArts #Clowns On this episode of the Circuspreneur Podcast, host Sheneas Stiletto interviews writer, director, and circus documentarian Guilford Adams.American Clown is a feature-length documentary exploring the plight of clowns in a country that looks on them with a growing sense of apprehension and disdain. Guest appearances include John C. Reilly, Steve-O, David Arquette, and Matt Morgan.Guilford Adams has worked as a professional clown for nearly two decades. In recent years, he's watched media reports of “clowns” terrorizing neighborhood streets at night, the reboot of “IT” and Pennywise, the shuttering of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the unceremonious end to the regional Ronald McDonald program, where “assistants” to Ronald appeared at grand openings, community events and elementary school shows.Guilford was one of those dismissed assistants to Ronald. As he felt the culture shifting, he started thinking about what it might mean for him, his family and all of his clowning comrades. The film follows Guilford's quest as he surveys the current state of clowning with his friends who are also struggling to adapt, as well as legendary performers of past eras and their take on the history and art of clowning.American Clown premieres today at the Chinese theater in at the Los Angeles Dances with Films Festival.

Send us a textNo name in the poetical world is more firmly established than that of Fitz-Green Halleck. (Ghost of Poe voice)Edgar Allan Poe wrote these words about Fitz green Halik for Graham's Magazine in 1843. This episode will take a look at Halleck as inspiration for some of America's first homoerotic works. My name is George Bartley, and this is Episode Episode 383 - to clasp thy hand in mine revisited. This is the first of a series of podcast episodes for Pride months dealing with some of the individuals in Poe's literary circle - some of the I people who were responsible for some of the earliest homoerotic literature in the United States. If you have been listening to past episodes of Celebrate Poe, you probably know by now that I really like memory aids - especially when introducing a new subject or individual. Probably the most important name to remember is Fitz-Greene Halleck. At first, I wasn't sure if the name was pronounced HALeck or HAYeck - but think of the computer Hal in 2001 - A Space Odyssey - Hal - who has the famous line “I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.” Think Hal - for Halleck. And if I say HAYLeck instead of HALeck - which I probably will do - just chalk it up to me pronouncing the word wrong - it should be HALeck.Fitz-Greene HALeck was born in 1790 - almost 20 years before Poe - in Guillford, Connecticut. Haleck and Guilford had an interesting relationship - it is said that the town never fully accepted Fitz Greene, and even though Halleck moved back to Guilford for the last two decades of his life, it appears that he never really felt at ease in his own hometown. Now when Fitz-Greene was two years old, two drunken soldiers were passing by his father's front door. The soldiers thdought it would be funny to discharge their rifles loaded only with powder right next to the side of the infant's head. They thought it would be funny to watch the infant scream. As a result, little Fitz-Greene had severe hearing problems in his left ear for the rest of his life - often appearing isolate in his relationships with other people because he just wasn't able to hear what they said.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

AJ's treatment and recovery has gone amazingly well, but he's still got work to do. This morning, Chaz and AJ shared the next steps he's taking. (0:00) The senior assassins game is not new, but did make local headlines after a building was put in lockdown protocol in Guilford. Chaz and AJ spoke with a parent, Curt, who wanted to warn students about the dangers of the game. Maddie, a senior student from another town, was also on the phone to share how her classmates are enjoying the game with some safety stipulations. (7:33) Detective Martin Podsiad from the New Haven Police Dept., was in studio with Chaz and AJ this morning. He shared a bit about his career as a detective, his strength as an interviewer, and the RICO case they aced thanks to a collaborator at the top of the crime syndicate. (14:50) The New York Knicks still have a lead over the Boston Celtics, but it has not been easy. Comedian Paul Virzi, a huge Knicks fan, was on the phone this morning to share the intense anxiety he's had throughout the series. (35:32) Live Nation's Jimmy Koplik addressed the very recent news from the Foo Fighters, who announced a live show later this year, and then he teased a replacement announcement for 3 Doors Down on the Creed tour. (42:32)
On Episode 233, we are thrilled to welcome back, MATTHEW GOODMAN! We are so grateful that Zoom and, before them, Skype (remember them?) opened up the world to conversations with authors. That said, there's still nothing like sitting in the same room with other humans talking about books, ideas, and historic happenings. Matthew joined us at Book Cougars HQ here in Connecticut to discuss his new book, PARIS UNDERCOVER: A WARTIME STORY OF COURAGE, FRIENDSHIP, AND BETRAYAL, now available from Ballantine Books. The book is a narrative history about Etta Shiber and Kate Bonnefous, two middle-aged women who smuggled out British servicemen from behind enemy lines, their arrest, Etta's best-selling memoir about their efforts, and the price Kate paid for that book. Don't miss our conversation with Matthew at the end of this episode. Paris Undercover is about history, but it speaks to our current time. Some highlights in this episode: We both have started reading around in THE PORTABLE FEMINIST READER, edited by Roxane Gay, starting with “If Men Could Menstruate” by Gloria Steinem. Chris also read “Being Female” by Eileen Myles. Emily finished the novel FOOD PERSON by Adam Roberts, and Chris read the graphic memoir EPHEMERA by Briana Loewinsohn. It was also time for another ghost story from THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: From Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. We both thought “The Signal Man” by Charles Dickens was “meh,” although it had some good lines and moments. In Biblio Adventures, we recap seeing Maura Casey at Bank Square Books in Mystic, our Independent Bookstore Day jaunts to Breakwater Books in Guilford and R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, and Emily's volunteer experience at Cherry Jubilee in NYC. We had such a fun time recording this episode and hope you enjoy it. We're celebrating May, Historic Preservation Month, with an episode on the Modern houses of the 1950s and 1960s. Could you live in a glass house? New Canaan, Connecticut's Mid-Century Modern homes designed after the Second War are world famous. In addition to Philip Johnson's Glass House, now a museum, New Canaan has homes designed by Marcel Breuer, Eliot Noyes, Frank Lloyd Wright and Edward Durell Stone. Each one is a part of architectural history and is a masterwork of the era's most talented architects. But by the 1990s, people began to demolish these relatively small homes sited on large lots. People in New Canaan began to band together to save these artworks-”machines for living”. Towns across Connecticut have at least one or two good Mid-Century Modern homes worth saving and celebrating. Host Mary Donohue discusses what a homeowners and community members can do to help save these modern homes. Her guests are Gwen North Reiss, historian and author of New Canaan Modern: A Preservation History published by the New Canaan Museum and Historical Society in 2024 and Mary Dunne, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer for the Dept of Economic and Community Development and homeowner of an architect-designed, Mid-Century Modern home. This week we'll be talking with Andrew Waters about his latest book, Backcountry War: The Rise of Francis Marion, Banastre Tarleton, and Thomas Sumter (2024, Westholme Publishing). In it Andrew weaves the history of three key leaders in the American Revolution into in a single narrative, focusing on the events of 1780 in South Carolina that witnessed their collective ascendance from common soldiers to American legends. It was a time when British victories at Charleston and Camden left the Continental Army in tatters and the entire American South vulnerable to British conquest. Yet in those dark hours, Sumter, Marion, and others like them rose in the swamps and hills of the South Carolina wilderness. Their collective efforts led to the stunning American victory at Cowpens and a stalemate at Guilford's Courthouse the following year that finally convinced British general Charles Cornwallis to abandon the Carolinas for Virginia and eventually to Yorktown where his beleaguered army surrendered.

What was his name? How old was he? Where did he come from? What happened to him? These are a few of the questions concerning the man known as William Dempsey. Eyewitnesses saw him murder Deputy U.S. Marshal Isaac Evans, and a jury convicted him of killing Marie Lavor, but did he murder others? Was he a young man named William Dempsey, as he claimed, or did he steal the real William Dempsey's identity? One hundred years later, these questions continue to elude historians. Dr. Guilford's interest in health issues related to yeast and mold began with his work on immunologic tests for Candida albicans. In the mid-1990s, he recognized glutathione's vital role in detoxification, particularly against heavy metals like mercury, which led to his formulation of ReadiSorb Glutathione, a liposome-encapsulated version of reduced glutathione. He has received accolades for his innovative contributions to medicine, including the Norman C. Clark Award for Innovation in 2002. Tune in to learn about how glutathione functions as both an antioxidant and a crucial component in linking toxicity and immune dysfunction.

Most people with ADHD traits are original thinkers and creative problem solvers, but don't always know how to make the most of these abilities. My own search lead me to the work of psychologist JP Guilford who studied creativity in the 950s, and is based on the notion that all creativity is evidence of divergent thinking. Spoiler alert: if you are neurodivergent, you are creative, even if you don't think of yourself that way. In this episode, using Guilford's model, I will break down the four different types of creativity (aka divergent thinking) and share simple, effective strategies for how to enhance yours, from brainstorming and mind mapping to perspective shifting and role-playing. Troubled by your tendency to go off on tangents? Have trouble making decisions because you can see the benefits of every option? Feel self conscious about your impulsivity and intuition? It's all evidence of your divergent, creative thinking! Don't forget to share this episode with a fellow creative and choose one new strategy to implement this week. Guilford's Model of Divergent Thinking (aka Creativity) Fluency: generating a large number of ideas or solutions Flexibility: generating ideas that are different from each other.Originality: generating ideas that are novel or unique.Elaboration: developing, refining, and elaborating on ideas. We'll not only cover tools and techniques to amplify your creativity in each of these four areas, but how to protect your creativity through strategic rest, structured downtime and how to avoid toxic productivity and revenge bedtime procrastination. In this final episode of the 2024 Listen and Learn series, hosts Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood conclude their exploration of classic literature in the field of creativity. They discuss the importance of studying these foundational works to gain a historical perspective and bridge connections between research and creative teaching and learning environments. Together, they dive into the Creative Studies Project, a research study conducted by Sid Parnes and Ruth Noller in 1972 at Buffalo State University. The project aimed to determine if the Osborn-Parnes Creative Problem Solving (CPS) process could be taught and its impact on creativity, academics, and life. The study involved 350 students divided into experimental and control groups, with notable figures such as J.P. Guilford, E. Paul Torrance, and Don MacKinnon serving on the research board. The results of the two-year Creative Studies Project showed significant differences between the experimental and control groups in their ability to cope with real-life situations, produce and evaluate new ideas, and engage in productive, creative behavior. The findings also revealed that 90% of the students believed they would apply what they learned in the program to their future lives and found it valuable compared to other college courses. The hosts emphasize the importance of teaching creativity and its potential to foster psychological health and well-being. To conclude the episode, Cyndi Burnett leads an activity from the original Creative Studies Project curriculum, challenging listeners to generate impossible ideas for improving something and then modify them to make them work. The hosts encourage listeners to submit their solutions along with the final code word for the Listen-and-Learn series to questions@fuelingcreativitypodcast.com Check out our website at fuelingcreativitypodcast.com Eager to bring more creativity into your school district? Can we teach students to think creatively? In the latest episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast, hosts Dr. Matthew Worwood and Dr. Cyndi Burnett delve into the work of E. Paul Torrance, the father of creativity in education. This fourth installment of the Listen and Learn series continues the exploration of classic literature in the field of creativity, providing a historical perspective that bridges the gap between research and teaching practices. Beginning with Torrance's groundbreaking paper, "Can We Teach Children to Think Creatively?" published in 1972, Cyndi and Matthew discuss the evolution of creativity studies from Guilford's pioneering speech in 1950 to Torrance's influential theories and tests. Cyndi emphasizes Torrance's vulnerability and the qualitative evidence he presented, while Matthew shares his personal journey into creativity, inspired by Sir Ken Robinson and furthered through applying Torrance's principles in his own classroom. The episode also spotlights the variety of strategies and modalities Torrance examined for teaching creativity, from creative problem-solving to motivation and environmental factors. Cyndi reflects on her own transformative experience with Dr. Roger Firestein's course and the profound impact it had on her life. Meanwhile, Matthew recounts his early career challenges and eventual discovery of the importance of originality in student projects, leading to a dedicated focus on teaching creative thinking skills. On the morning of October 25, 1943, the body of twenty-two-year-old Lion Brewery heiress, Patricia Lonergan, was discovered in a locked room in the New York apartment she shared with her infant son. Patrica was nude and had been bludgeoned with a candelabra. Suspicion quickly fell on her estranged husband, Wayne Lonergan, who had fled the country to Canada, where he was serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force.Wayne Lonergan was apprehended a few days later and returned to New York, where he was charged with the murder and two days later confessed to killing Patricia in a jealous rage. Despite his confession, Lonergan's case went to trial and quickly became one of the most sensational trials of the decade. While the murder itself was a terrible tragedy, the extensive press coverage and intense public interest was on Wayne's sexual identity and the supposedly scandalous lives of the two high society figures at the center of the case.Wayne was ultimately found guilty of the murder and served more than two decades in prison, after which he was deported back to Canada, where he resided until his death. Few people ever doubted that Wayne had indeed killed his wife; however, to this day many have questioned whether his sexuality and the couple's nontraditional marriage biased the jury against him and led to an unfair trial.Thank you to the incredible Dave White (of Bring Me the Axe and 99 Cent Rental Podcasts) for research!ReferencesAnderson-Minshall, Diane. 2021.
