Welcome to Mysteries to Die ForI am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 9, missing person is the featured crime. This is The Florida Man Cometh by Jim WinterThis week's story come to us from Jim Winter, author of the Holland Bay series, which includes Holland Bay and The Dogs of Beaumont Heights. Like his series, this story takes place in what he calls “the Celloverse,” set in and around the fictional City of Monticello. DELIBERATIONTeasdale's early morning response to an abandoned school bus has turned into a scavenger hunt for a Florida man gone AWOL. Which one of the three party animals is missing Florida man James Floren? Trashcan Man, who is now unnaturally baldUnicorn Man, who bounced his head off at least one windshieldPacer Man, who managed to get a car stuck on a roller coasterHere are the facts as Teasdale sees them:A school bus and driver were borrowed from the school district by Mayor Nate Keller for a fishing party on Saturday. To Keller's knowledge the bus was returned with a full tank of gas. The school bus wasn't returned to the school district but left on Rufus King's lawn. The driver, Charlie Tobin, is missing.Searching the bus, Teasdale discovered a stack of neatly folded clothes on the driver's seat and an annoyed alligator chained in the aisle. Before being abandoned, the bus was parked at The Waffle House. The manager said a drunk Larry Molnek, a sales manager for a local car dealer, came in with a man he didn't know. The manager tossed Molnek out for fighting. Either Molnek or the stranger head butted a windshield before leaving in the bus.Teasdale and Deputy Swenson received a BOLO Florida Man James Floren. The recently AWOL husband has family in Ohio, including now respected attorney Joe Reese. As teens, Floren and Reese were busted for breaking into the amusement park to climb the B-52 coaster.Inside the closed amusement park, Teasdale and Swenson discovered a naked man in a trash can. He was pale, white, and newly bald. Next, they found a man trapped in a Pacer stuck on the B-52 coaster. He was pale beneath his tan complexion. -Lastly, Swenson discovered a man in one of the bathrooms. He had a bloody, black-and-blue bump in the middle of his forehead. Which is the Florida Man cometh? About Missing PersonsSince 1975, the FBI has maintained the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) missing person and unidentified person statistics. According the 2023 statistics report, the files are retained indefinitely until the person is located or the record is cancelled by the entering agency. Data is collected on missing persons with disabilities including senility, where circumstances indicate the disappearance was non-voluntary and/or physical safety is in danger, where catastrophe is involved, and juveniles. As of December 31, 2023, NCIC contained 96,955 active missing person records. Within the calendar year, 563,389 records were entered and 563,644 records cleared. Of the active...

“All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.” United States Constitution, Article I, Section 7 Review the origins and debate over Article I, Section 7 of the United States Constitution, which provides that any bill raising revenue must originate in the House of Representatives. These bills were often referred to as “money bills” and this clause today is often referred to as the “Origination Clause.” This provision addresses the authority of the federal government to tax, as well as to raise revenues and funds from other sources. Article I, Section 7 ensures that taxation and similar means of raising money must first be proposed by the House of Representatives — which is composed of the most immediate representatives of the People. The Origination Clause preserves the keystone of “no taxation without representation.” The Senate has the authority to amend or concur in amendments to such bills, just like any other bill. This ensures the wisdom and experience of the Senate can influence these important matters, without allowing them to cower or coerce the House, and prevents an aristocracy from taking hold. He was also the final presidential candidate fielded by the dying Federalist Party. With help from our guest, we'll explore how King's career mirrors the rise and fall of one of America's first political parties.

This episode, the inaugural episode of the Second Decade podcast, details the bizarre (by modern standards) political situation Americans faced in 1816. The Democratic-Republican Party, hoping to score its fifth Presidential election win in a row, ran yet another Virginian, James Monroe. It looked to be a cakewalk, considering that the opposition party, the Federalists, was in full meltdown mode after they insisted on showing the country just how much they hated the War of 1812 with a disastrous and ill-advised confab in Hartford. But the dull Presidential race wasn't the real political story in 1816. There was an epic disaster in the making at the Congressional level, and voters rose in revolt like no other time in American history. In this episode you'll meet James Monroe, college drop-out and heir apparent to the Virginia dynasty; Rufus King, the last man to wear pantyhose on the floor of the U.S. Senate; and you'll learn why getting sloshed on the Fourth of July was, in 1816, every American's patriotic duty. Getting started on Rutledge's' draft of the Constitution, some members noticed that there are some very odd things contained in the document. Rufus King of Massachusetts can keep quiet no longer. He has agreed to things so far because he believes that a strong central government must emerge from the Convention. But what he sees on paper now, is a nation divided by avarice and slavery. Either what Rutledge has written must change or the three-fifths must be eliminated. He won't say the word, but the room senses he means abolition. Gouverneur Morris has no such limits. He will rail once more, passionately and deeply about the evils and morality of slavery. The Convention listens, then gets down to work. Realizing that the entire room is unwieldy and that the best and fastest work gets done in committee, they form several such groups, including, the committee on all the stuff we forgot or are too busy to work on...

For some weeks, Gouverneur Morris of New York has been absent from the Convention. Now, at the lowest point of the proceedings, he arrives with a single purpose: to derail the 3/5th's compromise. The tensions rise as the Slave States begin to believe that there are those, "within or without doors" who mean to take their slaves away. This will never be acceptable to the Slave States, and indeed, there is at least one non-Slave State that admits that it feels the same way. The debate boils down to one simple thing, do we unite with slavery, or do we dissolve without it? Morris will attempt to force the latter, but like all others before him, he will fail. When the dust settles, the Connecticut Compromise passes, and the Convention begins to move forward again.
