Technically the first ever quadruple-bill episode (if you also count the Richard Donner cut of Superman II, which we do), as voted for by Patrons of this podcast for, on the history and legacy of Episode Title ! The sequels to the previous episode on SupermanSUPERMAN II was inevitable after Richard Donner completed 75% of the movie, filmed at the same time as Superman (1978). His work on the sequel was halted during Superman's production, but as Superman flew into the box office and became a critical and financial success, the sequel was fired up again... and Donner himself was unceremoniously fired from the movie by the Salkinds, and replaced with Richard Lester; a move that didn't go down well with the cast and crew... SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT came about due to the open secret of Richard Donner's material existing in a vault somewhere. After a few legal issues, notably with the estate of Marlon Brando for the production of Superman Returns, a new 2001 DVD version of Superman also led to the discovery of 6 tonnes of unused, previously lost material shot by Richard Donner for Superman II. In an unprecedented (at the time) fan campaign to see Donner's cut, it was finally released to acclaim in 2006...SUPERMAN III is less of a Superman movie, and more of a comedy vehicle for the late, great Richard Pryor, but that didn't mean it was easy to get made. A lot of people were still annoyed at the Salkinds for their treatment of Richard Donner, including Christopher Reeve himself. Reeve almost didn't return as the iconic character, but changed his mind and relished playing Superman vs Superman (which was also almost the title of the movie), but in retrospect it would be a movie he wouldn't have too much fun with, despite the slapstick tone... SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE would only be made after the Salkinds sold the rights to The Cannon Group; a production company known for making low quality movies en masse to make as much profit as possible. Cannon's plan though was big franchises: they bought Superman with the intent of spending $36 million on Superman IV. They were also making Masters of the Universe, the first big screen adventure for He-Man. But Masters of the Universe's financial woes would drastically affect Superman IV, with disastrous consequences for the Superman franchise, and leading to a 19-year wait for Superman to return...I would love to hear your thoughts on Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III & Superman IV: The Quest for Peace !CONTACT.... After Superman III came and went with a whimper in 1983, the Salkinds knew their Superman money machine was in trouble. So much so they were within a few years of making a deal with Cannon Films to take over the franchise. Yet they had one more play. A film that was in development even while Superman III was still in production. One that they were sure would bring a whole new audience to the DC property. Yes, they had Supergirl up their blue sleeves. Listen in as the boys return to the Superman property they started reviewing back in March, by going through the ‘off shoots'. Beginning with Supergirl and ending with a review of Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice (from Superman's POV) Garrett, Matt, and Adam are going to be looking at all ways DC tried keeping this property alive, and then dive into what the future holds for the Man of Steel. Be sure to stay tuned till the end, as the boys announce what they're going to be reviewing next week!

After Superman III and the following film Supergirl (which we'll get to in a couple months) failed to make much of a dent in the box office, as well as meet fan expectations, the Salkinds finally took the hint and sold the Superman property off. And who they sold it to is one of the most infamous stories in filmmaking history. Anyone who has seen the documentary Electric Bugaloo knows who and what the Cannon Group represented in the late 70s and early 80s. With schlock like the Death Wish sequels and Chuck Norris actioners in their resume, they were far from a respected film production company. Yet, with the purchase of the He-Man and Superman properties, they were intent on changing that perspective. Maybe we'll talk about what happened with Masters of the Universe another day. But for now, we talk about Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. Listen in as the boys dissect all of their thoughts on the movie going into this viewing, and then talk about what has been called one of the worst films of all time. The Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast has treaded waters like this before in the DC Universe. See our Catwoman and Batman and Robin reviews. Will this one be just as unpredictable? Only one way to find out! And be sure to stay until the end, as the guys reveal what their next retrospective will be. Hint: it's continuing a previous one.
With Richard Donner fully out of the picture and Richard Lester back in tow, the Salkinds could finally do the Superman movie they seemingly wanted to make from the beginning. The result, is the Superman film that many say was the beginning of the end of the Man of Steel. Well, all except Garrett of course. Despite writing many articles and doing a podcast on it in the past, Garrett has never been able to talk about Superman III long form. Listen in as he uses his The Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast to finally debate the Richard Pryor starring superhero movie. Is it really as bad as Matt thought the last time he watched it ten years ago? What side does Adam stand on this?
Though filmed at the same time, it is safe to say 1980's Superman II is of a different ilk than Richard Donner's Superman The Movie. Reason being the director was fired midway through, and what we got as a result was a very successful, if different feeling, film than Donner's 1978 seminal favorite. The boys get back together to talk about the theatrical cut of Superman II, as (partially) directed by Salkinds hire Richard Lester. But as the podcast goes on, Garrett and Matt really dug into the weeds of differences between the original cut and 2006's Richard Donner Cut. Which one is better? And how is the movie overall? Thank you all for the support as we get into a series Garrett has been wanting to cover for years. And be sure to come back next week as Garrett FINALLY gets to talk about Superman III long form. Much to one of his partner's chagrin.

For our latest venture into Development Hell, we take on one of the biggest, most infamous examples of a film that never came to be: Tim Burton's Superman Lives. In the first part of our deepest dive yet, we start most people's first exposure to the story, Kevin Smith's story of getting hired to write the script. We examine Smith's story and dissect his script, but to really lay the groundwork for this tale we need to get to know the producer who hired Smith to begin with, Jon Peters. We relive the most intense and absurd of their filming experiences, revel in the early years of the View Askewniverse, ponder whether Jon Peters thinks Barbara Streisand can read, learn something new about sex worker hair trends of the 70s, and so, so much more. Listen as we rifle through the vast and numerous filing cabinets that hold this story, as we wish Warner Bros had done before Peters could get his hands on Supes' rights from the Salkinds. CW: Sexism, homophobia, violent behavior, comparisons to Donald Trump, mention of the Heidi Fleiss Hollywood Madame case -- and that's all just Jon Peters! "From this day on, now and forever, you will bring all our gifts to all the children in all the world and all this to be done on Christmas Eve" Santa Claus the Movie is what you'd call an 80's cult classic. It's a Christmas movie that most people don't like, but I find it a major guilty pleasure. Learn why I defend this movie, along with going into the history of the Salkind family, which involves Greta Garbo, a Japanese monster movie, the Three Musketeers and how the production of Superman would set in many of the ideas that would be reused on Santa Claus the Movie. Fans had been anticipating the release since the hint of General Zod and his cronies at the beginning of the first movie. The three villains were cast out of Kryptonian society with no dignity or remorse. But it was nothing compared to how the Salkinds were about to treat their director Richard Donner. He was quickly replaced with Hard Day's Night director Richard Lester. Hollywood drama aside, there was a whole generation of kids that thought Superman 2 hit all the marks. The action, humor, and comic bookiness of the film felt like a perfect balance even if it didn't entirely stand the test of time. Did you enjoy Superman 2? What's your story? This week on DC TV Classics, Keith Chow and Adam Starcaster analyze the first incarnation of an extended DC Universe, 1984's Supergirl. Directed by Jeannot Szwarc, the Salkinds attempted to broaden the universe created in the Christopher Reeve Superman movies by exploring the adventures of his "cousin" Kara Zor-El. Starring Helen Slater in the title role and Faye Dunaway -- as the villainous witch Selena, Supergirl failed to meet the box office heights of its predecessors. Despite its box office struggles, the movie will go down in history as the first mainstream female superhero film, paving the way for current franchises like Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel as well as the Maiden of Might's own hit television series! It was 40 years ago Superman the movie hit the big screen to make you believe a man could fly. In a special extended edition Kryptonian memory bank, we take a look back at how Warner Brothers and the Salkinds promoted this film with our special guest Brian Mckernan, and how did a kid from New Jersey, make the transition to Superman!? Hear Christopher Reeve, in his own words in another rare Petrou interview.
We talk about the first 2 Superman movies (1978 and 1980), and in particular the craziness that was going on behind the scenes with Alexander and Ilya Salkind and Richard Donner, just to get these movies made! What was the original story arc supposed to look like? Why is it that when you watch the Donner cuts of Superman I and II they essentially have the same ending, with Superman turning the earth backward? We explain all this and more, including the cutthroat methods of the Salkinds, the removal of Richard Donner as director before Superman II and the subsequent rewrites and reshoots of much of his work on Superman II, the addition of Richard Lester, and the eventual creation of the Donner Cut of each film.
Richard Donner, Christopher Reeve, even Richard Lester and the Salkinds, all had declared they were done with Superman. After a disappointing Superman 3 and a disastrous Supergirl the franchise seemed more toxic than kryptonite and the rights were sold off to cheapo genre film company Cannon Films. But despite star Reeves' earlier comments distancing himself from the character, Reeve again returned in exchange for both control over the story and a guarantee his pet project Street Smart would be made. The film ended up a notorious Nuclear Man sized bomb, but is it as bad as is thought? Listen to Jakob, Stuart, and Arnie's review to find out!
