Technically the first ever quadruple-bill episode (if you also count the Richard Donner cut of Superman II, which we do), as voted for by Patrons of this podcast for, on the history and legacy of Episode Title ! The sequels to the previous episode on SupermanSUPERMAN II was inevitable after Richard Donner completed 75% of the movie, filmed at the same time as Superman (1978). His work on the sequel was halted during Superman's production, but as Superman flew into the box office and became a critical and financial success, the sequel was fired up again... and Donner himself was unceremoniously fired from the movie by the Salkinds, and replaced with Richard Lester; a move that didn't go down well with the cast and crew... SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT came about due to the open secret of Richard Donner's material existing in a vault somewhere. After a few legal issues, notably with the estate of Marlon Brando for the production of Superman Returns, a new 2001 DVD version of Superman also led to the discovery of 6 tonnes of unused, previously lost material shot by Richard Donner for Superman II. In an unprecedented (at the time) fan campaign to see Donner's cut, it was finally released to acclaim in 2006...SUPERMAN III is less of a Superman movie, and more of a comedy vehicle for the late, great Richard Pryor, but that didn't mean it was easy to get made. A lot of people were still annoyed at the Salkinds for their treatment of Richard Donner, including Christopher Reeve himself. Reeve almost didn't return as the iconic character, but changed his mind and relished playing Superman vs Superman (which was also almost the title of the movie), but in retrospect it would be a movie he wouldn't have too much fun with, despite the slapstick tone... SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE would only be made after the Salkinds sold the rights to The Cannon Group; a production company known for making low quality movies en masse to make as much profit as possible. Cannon's plan though was big franchises: they bought Superman with the intent of spending $36 million on Superman IV. They were also making Masters of the Universe, the first big screen adventure for He-Man. But Masters of the Universe's financial woes would drastically affect Superman IV, with disastrous consequences for the Superman franchise, and leading to a 19-year wait for Superman to return...I would love to hear your thoughts on Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III & Superman IV: The Quest for Peace !CONTACT.... After Superman III and the following film Supergirl (which we'll get to in a couple months) failed to make much of a dent in the box office, as well as meet fan expectations, the Salkinds finally took the hint and sold the Superman property off. And who they sold it to is one of the most infamous stories in filmmaking history. Anyone who has seen the documentary Electric Bugaloo knows who and what the Cannon Group represented in the late 70s and early 80s. With schlock like the Death Wish sequels and Chuck Norris actioners in their resume, they were far from a respected film production company. Yet, with the purchase of the He-Man and Superman properties, they were intent on changing that perspective. Maybe we'll talk about what happened with Masters of the Universe another day. But for now, we talk about Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. Listen in as the boys dissect all of their thoughts on the movie going into this viewing, and then talk about what has been called one of the worst films of all time. The Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast has treaded waters like this before in the DC Universe. See our Catwoman and Batman and Robin reviews. Will this one be just as unpredictable? Only one way to find out! And be sure to stay until the end, as the guys reveal what their next retrospective will be. Hint: it's continuing a previous one.

This film is a confounding quagmire of bad dialogue, a confusing plot, cheap FX, unenergetic performances, and Jon Cryer. But at least the story of the film's production is fascinating. Plus, we need your help in finding a modern movie that is both less than 2 hours long, and entertaining.  As always, if you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe. Enjoy!

We open the show talking about Sam's rewatch of Superman IV The Quest For Peace. How did it stack up with Sam's Superman III rewatch? Both Pals are over Lana being mad about "the secret." Is the secret even a big deal? Is Ally the Parasite? Sam and Henry both loved the kids forming their own little Scooby gang and want to see more!HENRY'S NOTES:EPISODE  12 - “They Weren't Just Flowers, They Were Peonies” Superman IV - Thoughts?Let's talk about Superman and Lois Season 2 Episode 12S02E12 - “Lies That Bind” Directed by:David MahmoudiehWriting Credits:Rina Mimoun We pick up right where we left off with Clark levitating in front of Lana. Meanwhile, Jordan and Jonathan question whether Lois and Clark are telling them the complete story. Lastly, Natalie tries her best to get Sarah to acknowledge Jordan. The Lana Stuff - Lana asking the obvious question right off the bat, “How did people not put this together” and Clark having a great response for the age old question - “People see what they want to see.”“After saving you and Pete that night” - confirmation of Pete Ross' existence. Also reminiscent of the famous Dan Jurgens' story from Adventures of Superman #474 about drunk driving.“Did you ever love me?” I mean yeah in the way that a 14 year old loves his girlfriend aka JORDAN AND SARAH. Sorry, Lana has NO reason to be mad. This is contrived. Now she's mad at Lois? Oh please. I mean I get it, they are lying but it's too protect everyone. Lol to Lana BREAKING UP with the Kent-Lanes.The Kids - Finally the boys with Nat IN school…and I guess out of school. What happened to Jon-El's S shield. SUIT!!!!! FINALLY!!!! How do we feel about Nat giving her suit to a boy? Love the kids being a scooby gang searching the caverns. Love that Jordan saved them and that they were all sitting around laughing about it. This is a good team that I wish had come together sooner. It was nice not seeing Nat so crabby. Awwwww - Kyle! What a sweet dad, making an open mic night for Sarah. LOVE THIS. Huge babyface turn for this guy. Who actually wrote that song? Didn't see it in the credits. Tal-Rho - Do we trust him? Or do we smell another double cross? I like the idea of redemption because Superman trusts him. Does yelling while doing heat vision help? Did it hurt?Ally - She can siphon powers? Cool action scene. Fun that she's a god now but like, still what are her motivations?

Sean and Cody, back from an unplanned hiatus, are joined by The Industry podcast host Dan Delgado for a look at the rarest of birds: an actually good film from schlocky 1980s grindhouse studio Cannon Films! In Runaway Train, prison lifer Manny (Jon Voight) is joined by a whiny shoeless sidekick Buck (Eric Roberts) for a poop-scented breakout from Alaska's most notorious hoosegow. But their brilliant escape goes terribly wrong when the engineer of the freight train they stow away on croaks from a heart attack, and no one in the entire Alaska Railroad system seems to know how to slow down the train. Environmental issues discussed include the impact of the railroad, a harebrained early 1900s scheme to turn Alaska into Scandinavia, and how perennial Green Screen podcast villain Tricky Nick Nixon swindled Native Americans out of their land for, you guessed it, oil. How, when, and why were railroads built across Alaska, and how was that process different from how train infrastructure developed in the rest of America? What was “recapitulation,” whose idiotic idea was it, and how did it manage to be both environmentally disastrous and crudely racist? What did President Warren G. Harding really die of? Why did so many of the Cannon films star Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson? How did famed Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa get involved in this movie? Why is “600” the magic number for Eric Roberts's career? Should Golan and Globus have just shelved the idea for this film and concentrated by putting more money into Superman IV: The Quest For Peace? How did Danny Trejo parlay a life of crime into a successful film, philanthropy and restaurant career? All these questions and more are waiting to jump the track in this, the third-to-last regular episode of Green Screen. Big thanks to Dan Delgado of The Industry podcast for joining us on the show. A tribute to the legendary award-winning composer, arranger and orchestrator who collaborated with John Williams on many projects over the years, as remembered by his stepdaughter Renata Pompelli Featuring Special Guest Mike Matessino Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto and Tim Burden Among the collaborators who worked with John Williams during his long and distinguished career, Alexander Courage (1919-2008) certainly holds a very special place. Composer, arranger, orchestrator and conductor of rare skill and incredible bravura, Alexander Courage (affectionately named "Sandy" by his family and closest friends) is considered one of the best and most revered musicians who ever worked in Hollywood at least since the 1940s. His association with John Williams started way back in the mid-1950s, when Courage requested a young man named Johnny Williams to perform as pianist for the soundtrack of the 1957 film musical Funny Face starring Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn. Courage recommended Williams to Deutsch for orchestration duties on Some Like It Hot. Williams often spoke of Courage's importance as an arranger and orchestrator for the great MGM musicals of the 1950s, comparing him to great arrangers like Robert Russell Bennett and Conrad Salinger for his uncanny ability in creating a unique orchestral sound. Courage's collborations with John Williams continued also throughout the following decades. In 1970, Courage joined Williams as an orchestrator on Fiddler On The Roof, for which the composer won his first Academy Award (and thanked Courage during his speech). Courage also contributed orchestrations for The Poseidon Adventure (1972), The Cowboys (1972) and also some of Williams' blockbuster scores of the era including Superman and Return of the Jedi. One of their key collaborations was for the 1987 film Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, the last starring the beloved Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. Among his orchestration credits for John Williams are also major blockbuster scores including Home Alone, Hook and Jurassic Park. We're very honoured to have Alexander Courage's stepdaugher Renata Pompelli as the special guest of The Legacy of John Williams podcast to honour and celebrate Sandy's memory and legacy on the day of his 102nd birthday (December 10). Renata is the family's custodian of memories and historian In this conversation, she shares many affectionate memories of Alexander Courage, both as a man and as a musician, offering an intimate, caring and lovely portrait of one of Hollywood's true (and perhaps lesser-known) musical geniuses, including his long-standing friendship and working relationship with John Williams. Christopher Reeve returned to his most iconic role one last time, and most people agreed it was one (or two) too many. With a shoe string budget and a cutting room floor full of key scenes, can there really be anything in this movie worth praising?Of course! The movie may not be the high point of the series for special effects, but the all star cast ensures that we still get some great moments. In the new episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, two big screen returns: one that went a little bit better than the other. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987) saw Christopher Reeve return to play the Man of Steel. But a late more than halving of the production budget played havoc with the film, and led it to Milton Keynes. The Muppets (2011) meanwhile in a small way had the hit sex comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall to thank for its existence. It was a seven year battle to get the film made. Stories of both are told in this episode. Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriespod. Support our work at www.patreon.com/simonbrew.
