Would you believe that in 1973, Evel Knievel wasn't done in by a motorcycle accident but a bunch of bumbling roller skaters? Bailey's Comets, another DePatie-Freleng production conceived by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, attempted to out-do Wacky Races in every regard. More characters! More teams for these characters! More outlandish situations! More memorable protag... no, we can't say that with a straight face. Dastardly and Muttly these bozos AIN'T!!
Spring may be round the corner, but it's always winter in our souls! Yes, as most normal people dare to celebrate the evenings getting ever so slowly lighter, The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour draws the heavy brocade curtains, lights a candle or two and reclines further into the misanthropic gloom. It certainly beats going outside, where the real horror lies. In this extended trailer for their NEW SUPERNATURAL SERIES, Messrs Velvet, Blackout and Bognops move the glass of nostalgic criticism over the animated lycanthropic-farce Fangface, and try to make contact with BBC1's 1992 sitcom So Haunt Me. If there really *is* somebody there, all will be revealed After Dark... How many stars of Capcom had a Before-They-Were-Famous career at Ruby-Spears? How many online auctions of original animation-cells would you have to win before you become the rights-holder of a cartoon? And how many sitcom-dads does it take sitting round the table until they can see the ghost? Watch agog as an unseen spectral hand presses the Play button, and find out... Arcade games exploded onto the scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with several shows, animated or otherwise, airing on TV. Jump ahead to the 1990s and video games left the arcade, going to living rooms everywhere. One popular franchise, still popular to this day, was and is Mega Man, which had an animated show from the masters of adapting video games to television, Ruby-Spears, the minds behind cartoons like Pac-Man, Saturday Supercade, and Dragon's Lair.
The holiday TV tradition of FAMOUS CLASSIC TALES specials by Hanna-Barbera, API, and Ruby-Spears from Kenner Toys is explored with author/historian MICHAEL LYONS.

The animated hosts of the Cult Film Showdown explore the strangest time in human history - the late 20th century. Chuck Norris is so incredible as a voice actor that his voice alone made sections of Karate Kommandos live action! Watch along at https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRkso3AeKZUk2kT_iXfXP8PCb6iaufS48&si=7nKxhyHpiA2z0QQm Episode 7 "Chuck Norris Karate Kommandos" Chuck Norris is an operative for the United States government who has a team consisting of Pepper, a technological genius, Kimo, a Samurai warrior, Reed, his apprentice, Tabe, a Sumo warrior, and Too Much, the young ward. Together they foil the plans of The Claw and his right hand man, The Super Ninja. Karate Kommandos (also known as Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos) is an American animated television series that originally aired in 1986 as a syndicated five episode mini-series. It was created by and starred Chuck Norris as himself, and produced by Ruby-Spears Enterprises. The series follows the framing device of Mister T (also a Ruby-Spears production). At the beginning of each episode, a live action segment with Norris, usually at a gym or a martial arts studio, is shown to explain what is going on. At the end of each episode, Norris narrates a moral lesson for the audience to learn. What's up, dudes? Remember the Centurions? Kenner released the 7” Centurions line in 1986. The figures had cybernetic Exo-Frames with a number of hardpoints on the surface, onto which the various parts of their Assault Weapon Systems attached. In the accompanying Ruby-Spears cartoon, personnel on the orbiting space station Skyvault beamed the AWS to the team.London Editions Magazines published Centurions comics in the UK. Despite the vague near future label, the UK comic firmly establishes the year as 2087 in issue #8 in the 4 page story entitled ‘Time Trap.' In fact, it's New Year's Eve 2087, and even on Skyvault the turn of the new year is eagerly awaited. Max, Jake, and Crystal have only 2 ½ minutes before midnight, and Crystal beams Jake up to Skyvault to celebrate the New Year with his friends. Just as Jake is teleported aboard, he discovers everything in a state of suspended animation. Yes, everyone of his friends is frozen in time. Investigating with the space scanner, Jake discovers that time hasn't stopped, just slowed down almost to a halt. Doc Terror apparently fired a Time Stasis beam at Skyvault causing some sort of time distortion. Not knowing how to operate Skyvault's defense systems, Jake instead opts to use Ace's Orbital Interceptor AWS. He's not used to handling space missions though, and he flies erratically. Fortunately, this prevents Doc Terror from locking his weapons on him. Jake fires a multi-particle missile at Doc Terror's Flying Fortress, disabling it and shutting down the beam. Free from the time stasis, Crystal beams Jake aboard, and the team ushers in the new year.Weapons? Check. Teleporters? Yup. Dracula? Umm… So put on your Exo-Frame, yell Power Extreme, and dive into this episode on the Centurions!Check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! Puppy Power Goes Wrong! Or rather, it first goes right then goes wrong? Or goes right in all the wrong ways? The legacy of Scrappy-Doo, one of the most maligned characters Hanna-Barbera ever created, isn't as simple as some make it out to be, and Pemmy, James and Krissi sit down to hash out what happened, when and why, while looking at three cartoons featuring the pup. It's a tale of network executives meddling, writers reaching and Fred Flintstone's catchphrase being turned into yet another dog. Enjoy!

Okay, so here's the story: A rough street cat known for stealing fish is paired with a not-too-bright dog and his gang of Halloween rejects. Add up one part spooky dog and one part bad attitude, and you get 100% Ruby-Spears. Here now is the story of how this cat and dog show came to Saturday Morning. Where did these Creeps come from? Why did Mel Blank with a “K” become Mel Blanc with a “C”? Does this show give us a legitimate look at what's in panda penis? All these questions, and more, will be answered in this look at HEATHCLIFF AND DINGBAT! Thanks for ‘tooning in. Before the early 1980s, Hanna-Barbera and Filmation were the only two industry juggernauts that ruled the Saturday Morning airwaves with HB ahead of the pack. And nobody could catch up to either in popularity and the amount of animated shows they produced in a factory-like way. But with the advent of weekday afternoon and first run syndication in the 1980s, other companies started to appear and for the first time become real competition for the two studio giants of the animated landscape. The one that popped out of nowhere and was stiff competition for both was a French/American company called D.I.C. Or Diffusion Information Communications was its full name … although there are some in the industry that thought it should have stood for Do It Cheaply. Though, much like a great number of these companies that cropped up in the 80s, D.I.C produced a great number of shows based on toys (M.A.S.K and Care Bears) as well as shows based on comic strip characters (Heathcliff and Dennis the Menace). Their most popular and best remembered character might very well be INSPECTOR GADGET. An original character that was not connected to a popular toy line. Although one would come out of its popularity. D.I.C was also infamous in the industry for underbidding properties and courting toy companies away from other studios. A good case in point is the way they took over Alvin and the Chipmunks from Hanna-Barbera legends Ruby-Spears and GI Joe away from Sunbow after the failure of GI Joe the Movie. So, join Bret, Jamie and Andrew as they take a trip down memory lane as they prove once and for all that they DO know D.I.C. And a big thank you to performer Madam Misfit for allowing us to use her electro swing version of INSPECTOR GADGET at the end of this episode. Please go to her website to learn more about her as well as listen to and purchase her music. And follow her on social media.

In Hollywood today talking with American voiceover actor Beau Weaver, talking about how he made the challenging transition from a career in radio personality (KILT and KULF/Houston; KFRC/San Francisco; KHJ/Los Angeles) to voice actor; becoming one of the pioneers of satellite broadcasting as an original member of the air staff for 'Transtar Radio Network'; the backstory of his first promo voice company called "Three Fine Pipes" and how taking classes with legendary voiceover actress Joan Gerber helped launch him into a successful voiceover career with clients such as Animal Planet, National Geographic and Entertainment Tonight, to providing the voice of Superman/Clark Kent in the Ruby-Spears produced animated series 'Superman' and later as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in Marvel's 'Fantastic Four'. The candid and always original Beau also explains how to balance working hard and setting goals together with being inspired and being present (a harder lesson to learn as he describes in the podcast); plus two things he does every day that bring him joy. Buzz Dixon's writing resume has included Thundarr the Barbarian, Jem, Inhumanoids, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Tiny Toon Adventures, Tarzan and the Super 7 (the Web Woman installments), Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, Dungeons & Dragons and the Teen Wolf animated series. He has worked for Filmation, Ruby-Spears, Sunbow and Warner Animation. He has also worked with some legendary people including Jack “The King” Kirby. The man who basically created the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. But it's GI Joe he's best remembered. And wrote some of the most memorable episodes for the series using his time in the Army to help guide the writing team in creating stories for a military team. Bret, Jamie and Andrew continue their discussion about work in the industry and the weekday afternoon and Saturday morning. And his thoughts about the revival of interest in 1980s property. And what it was like being part of creating those properties back then. As well as advice to young writers who wish to get their ideas out.

Don Bluth's laserdisc games helped keep arcades interesting for just long enough while the console side of video games was going bust, and Ruby Spears capitalized on it with the Saturday Supercade series on CBS. Space Ace was one of seven total games adapted into this anthology series, and it's... not great. It's a mild sight better than some of the other shows on it, sadly.Special thanks to Krissi Harding from James' other podcast, Gaming Street Irregulars, for helping with the intro!

By his own admission, screenwriter, game designer and author Flint Dille considers himself almost famous. He also never forgets how fortunate he was to be writing for television animation during what he has referred to in his book as ‘the geek 1980s'. In the forefront of the storytelling landscape from his early work with Ruby-Spears to the memorable episodes he wrote for both GI Joe and later as a writer and script editor for the Transformers. Working with some of the biggest luminaries of our time including George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Jack Kirby, Frank Miller and Gary Gygax.

Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal
Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week, we get back to the Saturday morning basics… cartoons! What is it about that magical Saturday morning animation that took our attention, sparked our imaginations and created a popular culture that we celebrate today? The debate begins and to help us draw to a few conclusions we have an animation heavyweight in Aaron Augenblick founder of Brooklyn based Augenblick Studios, an independent animation studio. Notable productions include The Jellies!, Losers, UglyAmericans, ShortiesWatchin’ Shorties and WonderShowzen. Augenblick co-wrote and directed the 2007 short film GoldenAge, which was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and won the Grand Prize in the Ottawa Film Festival. To relax a little, Augenblick Studios animated two episodes in Netflix’s HeadspaceGuidetoMeditation series that takes viewers through the benefits and science of meditation and has now focused his attention to developing original content at HBO Max, Adult Swim, TBS, and PBS. He created the horror-comedy series DeathHacks for Snapchat, which debuted in Fall 2020 and has animated and produced the upcoming Adult swim half-hour comedy series TeenageEuthanasia that will premiere next year. Whoa, that’s a lot, so let's get to it! Join Grim Shea, Marke, Jimmy The Gent and Johnny Heck as they pay homage to cartoon greatness, Ruby-Spears and celebrate the cartoons that were, are and will be!
