I explore the complicated history of the film, from the firing of director Richard Donner to the eventual release of the Richard Donner Cut. We'll compare the theatrical version directed by Richard Lester with Donner's vision, discussing the differences in tone, plot, and character development. Technically the first ever quadruple-bill episode (if you also count the Richard Donner cut of Superman II, which we do), as voted for by Patrons of this podcast for, on the history and legacy of Episode Title ! The sequels to the previous episode on SupermanSUPERMAN II was inevitable after Richard Donner completed 75% of the movie, filmed at the same time as Superman (1978). His work on the sequel was halted during Superman's production, but as Superman flew into the box office and became a critical and financial success, the sequel was fired up again... and Donner himself was unceremoniously fired from the movie by the Salkinds, and replaced with Richard Lester; a move that didn't go down well with the cast and crew... SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT came about due to the open secret of Richard Donner's material existing in a vault somewhere. After a few legal issues, notably with the estate of Marlon Brando for the production of Superman Returns, a new 2001 DVD version of Superman also led to the discovery of 6 tonnes of unused, previously lost material shot by Richard Donner for Superman II. In an unprecedented (at the time) fan campaign to see Donner's cut, it was finally released to acclaim in 2006...SUPERMAN III is less of a Superman movie, and more of a comedy vehicle for the late, great Richard Pryor, but that didn't mean it was easy to get made. A lot of people were still annoyed at the Salkinds for their treatment of Richard Donner, including Christopher Reeve himself. Reeve almost didn't return as the iconic character, but changed his mind and relished playing Superman vs Superman (which was also almost the title of the movie), but in retrospect it would be a movie he wouldn't have too much fun with, despite the slapstick tone... SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE would only be made after the Salkinds sold the rights to The Cannon Group; a production company known for making low quality movies en masse to make as much profit as possible. Cannon's plan though was big franchises: they bought Superman with the intent of spending $36 million on Superman IV. They were also making Masters of the Universe, the first big screen adventure for He-Man. But Masters of the Universe's financial woes would drastically affect Superman IV, with disastrous consequences for the Superman franchise, and leading to a 19-year wait for Superman to return...I would love to hear your thoughts on Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III & Superman IV: The Quest for Peace !CONTACT.... We'll compare and contrast both versions, ponder what the comic book movie landscape would look like had Donner realized his vision, reveal why the producers dumped scenes with Marlon Brando, discuss the ups and downs of shifts in tone, and so much more.Ryan's Recommendations: “Pink Flamingos” (1972), “Female Trouble” (1974), and “Polyester” (1981)For exclusive bonus content and early releases of every episode, join our Patreon and become an Official Minder: http://www.patreon.com/onetrackmindpodcastTheme Music by: Bildschirm (bildschirm.bandcamp.com). Week one of our theme, ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY, ends with an obvious follow up to last Wednesday's episode with “Superman II” but not just any Superman II. After Richard Donner got fired during production of Superman II, they brought in Richard Lester to reshoot some stuff and finish it off leading to the classic theatrical release of the movie. Twenty six years later, Richard Donner was backed up by a horde of demanding nerds on the internet and given the green light to recut Superman II into a movie that was as close to Richard Donner's original vision as they could get. We're doing this version to maintain the “Donner-ness” but some Lester shots and scenes were still used. There's less “Superman and Lois in France” and more “Lois jumps out of a window and pulls out guns.”. A little less “flag waving” and a little more quick “shots of a crowd that is not from 1980”. It's fun enough. Lois is wild in this one. I'm going to teach you all something very very valuable right now about podcasting.  Prepare yourselves, because these are pearls of wisdom right here.   The key to having a successful podcast is CONSISTENCY.   So here we are, willy nilly releasing episodes a couple of weeks apart, a couple of months apart...our last full episode was mid-April...so...yeah.  Consistency.  Always consistency. Having said that, this episode is a cracker! Where else can you get Movie News that's over a month old without going back and listening to old... ... ...yeah, I suppose you could do that.  And why not?  We have fun, don't we?   This week's episode deals with the absolute clusterfuck that was the making of Superman The Movie and Superman II. And next week, we go into to detail comparing and contrasting Superman II the theatrical cut with the more recent Richard Donner Cut, the original director who was fired after having completed 80% of Superman II and was given a chance in 2006 to realise his vision.  Also, we got a couple of Daleks to do Trivia Corner, so listen out for that... Also be sure to take a gander at Si's pod art for this week, it's bloody gorgeous! Enjoy!   MUSIC TRACKS Modern Funk Groove by StudioEtude. Feel The 80s by Nuclearmetal. SUPERMAN II: The Richard Donner Cut is one of the most interesting Home Entertainment stories in film history.  Released in 2006, this version of the movie captures the original vision director Dick Donner had for the second of his two Superman movies.  In part 2 of our Superman podcasts, we go into the origins of the "Richard Donner Cut" starting with the unauthorized superfan cut and Michael Thau's initial conversations with the studio and their interest in a Donner Cut.  Then we dive into the behind-the-scenes stories of the editing, production, and marketing of the film, including insights into how Dick Donner felt about the film and the fan reception.  And  we wrap up the discussion by looking at the impact of this film on the Home Entertainment industry and its love of "extended editions" and "director's cuts." The Guests:Michael Thau first worked with director Richard Donner on "Ladyhawk." He led the restoration of Superman and was the driving force behind "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut".Derek Hoffman was Dick Donner's assistant then, following in the footsteps of Geoff Johns (DC) and Kevin Feige (Marvel).  He is currently a VP at The Donners' Company. In this month's episode, Charlie and George are willing to believe a man will fly - with a podcast special on Superman The Movie and Superman 2!   The films had a big effect on the Brothers McGhee growing up and as it's the Man of Steel's 85th anniversary (and 45th anniversary of the first movie) it felt the right time to revisit the classic comic book epics!   There's a whole lotta Superchat to get through, gigantic scripts, creative accounting, crazy casting, location changes, and plenty of behind the scenes drama!   The lengthy chat only covers the theatrical cuts of these films, however we will be covering the Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2 in a Patreon special in the near future!

Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast

Though filmed at the same time, it is safe to say 1980's Superman II is of a different ilk than Richard Donner's Superman The Movie. Reason being the director was fired midway through, and what we got as a result was a very successful, if different feeling, film than Donner's 1978 seminal favorite. The boys get back together to talk about the theatrical cut of Superman II, as (partially) directed by Salkinds hire Richard Lester. But as the podcast goes on, Garrett and Matt really dug into the weeds of differences between the original cut and 2006's Richard Donner Cut. Which one is better? And how is the movie overall? Thank you all for the support as we get into a series Garrett has been wanting to cover for years. And be sure to come back next week as Garrett FINALLY gets to talk about Superman III long form. Much to one of his partner's chagrin.

It is the second installment in the Superman film series and a sequel to Superman (1978). It stars Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Terence Stamp, Ned Beatty, Sarah Douglas, Margot Kidder, and Jack O'Halloran. The Richard Donner Cut - Kryptonian villain Gen. Zod (Terence Stamp) and his henchmen are accidentally freed from their outer-space imprisonment and threaten Earth with destruction, just as Superman (Christopher Reeve) decides to renounce his superpowers for his new love, Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). This alternate version of the film is based on footage shot by director Richard Donner before being replaced on the project, and it includes material not seen in the film's original 1980 release.

(Director Cuts part 1 of 3)   Being a director can be tough.  You have a vision for how you see your project coming to life, but that doesn't always come to fruition.  Producers, studios, and any number of influences can alter the picture in a million little ways.  Occasionally, a director has a chance to come back and show audiences how they would have done it differently if they had another chance.  The Richard Donner Cut of Superman II is just one example of a director getting a redo.

Justin & Josh return to the Superman universe with a look at the "what if" version of Superman II. Although not perfect, it's an interesting specimen to behold. Certain modifications were bold, clever and interesting. Nevertheless, there are instances where the theatrical version out shines it and yet plenty of times when it doesn't. However, despite the strengths and imperfections of either version, the Donner cut of Superman II is a rare cinematic treat that deserves to be treasured. A Soulless Minion (minus one) takes on the sequal to the greatest superhero film ever made... Superman II! This represents the second to last in our unofficial countdown of the Superman films in reverse order. Justin (the minion in question here) is a lifelong fan of the franchise and does his best to explore the various plot elements and behind-the-scenes goings on of the film that have now become the stuff of movie legend. This commentary strives to examine the elements of this version of the film while at the same time comparing to the Richard Donner Cut of the film released a few years ago. Because this version is the one most of us grew up with, it seemed only right to do a commentary on this the theatrical cut. Superman II is not a perfect film, but it's a fun and entertaining ride through superheroland. Sync Point - The first black frame after the WB logo fades to black Email us soullessminions@gmail.com
