In which the Mister joins me in reviewing SUPERMAN (2025), from writer/director James Gunn, based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.  The film dives into the complexities of Clark Kent's (David Corenswet) dual life, exploring his struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as he navigates his role as both a journalist and the Man of Steel. The film sees Superman facing unintended consequences after intervening in an international conflict, leading to a tarnished reputation and presenting his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) with an opportunity to exploit the situation. Ultimately, Superman must win back public trust and confront Luthor's schemes with the help of his colleagues at the Daily Planet and his loyal super-dog, Krypto.  The film clocks in at 2 h and 9 m, is rated PG-13 and is still in theaters.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.#Superman #NationalAlliedPublications #JerrySiegel #JoeShuster #DCComics #JamesGunn #DavidCorenswet #Superman #AlanTudyk #Gary #GraceChan #SupermanRobot12 #BradleyCooper #JorEl #AngelaSarafyan #Lara #MichaelRooker #SupermanRobot1 #PomKlementieff #SupermanRobot5 #MaríaGabrielaDeFaría #TheEngineer #SaraSampaio #EveTeschmacher #StephenBlackehart #SydneyHappersen #GiovannieCruz #CherylKimble#NicholasHoult #LexLuthor #WendellPierce #PerryWhite#BeckBennett #SteveLombard #NevaHowell #Ma Kent#PruittTaylorVince #PaKent #MikaelaHoover #CatGrant#SkylerGisondo #JimmyOlsen #RachelBrosnahan #LoisLane#ChristopherMcDonald #RonTroupe #ZlatkoBuric #VasilGhurkos #FrankGrillo #RickFlagSr #EdiGathegi #MrTerrific #NathanFillion #GuyGardner #IsabelaMerced #Hawkgirl #SeanGunn #MaxwellLord #Superhero #Comics #ComicCharacter #Superman2025 #ActionEpic #AdventureEpic #SciFiEpic #Action #Adventure #SciFi  @WarnerBros  #FridayFamilyFilmNightOpening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library

At the Flicks

And that's a wrap – of the Summer. Which means the big blockbuster season, lasting seemingly for ever, is over for another year.  However, we couldn't let this moment pass without having our say on some of the key movies of the hot months.  For this discussion we have unleashed Graham, Jeff and Phil to do the honours.  Phil of course watches just about everything with the other two rather in his wake.  We made sure that for the main four films included in this review, all three lads have cast their critical gaze over them. Only four films I hear you say? Look, at our combined ages getting to see even four was pushing it! But seriously, we wanted to focus on four of the hits and try to remain positive.  In fact, it's all so positive Jeff and Phil hardly disagree on this show!  So what are the four films: F1: The Movie – Apple finally have a monster hit on their hands, but in amidst all the sports cliches and the stunning IMAX visuals, is it any good?  Jurassic World: Rebirth – Forget the end of the last movie, a new dinosaur age is about to dawn.  Are we all dinosaured out or does this movie bring fresh thrills to old fossils?  Superman – The Man Of Steel is back, this time under the auspices of James Gunn and new Superman star David Corenswet.  Just how does it compare to the Zack Synder films and Rochard Donner's 70's classic?  Fantastic Four: First Steps – Speaking of Superheroes returning with new actors and a new premise.  Marvel promises that this one is different – is it?  And as an added bonus, Phil and Jeff discuss (spoiler free) **Weapons**.  Needless to say Graham won't watch it unless someone pays for his dry cleaning!  Was it a great Summer? Box office takings may have been down and there may have been too many sequels or reboots, but was the all-important quality good? We will give you our answer in the show.  As always please tell us what you think. For now, we are getting our notebooks out for the Fall (Autumn) season.  Watch out for us scribbling At The Flicks. Bye for now.

Next up, the hosts break down the SNL cast shakeup as Devon Walker, Emil Wakim, Michael Longfellow, and veteran Heidi Gardner leave the show. Then, in Weekly Watches:Peacemaker Season 2 (HBO Max, premiered Aug 21): James Gunn's follow‑up to The Suicide Squad continues in his newly rebooted DC Universe. Critics say it's darker, heavier, more emotional than Season 1—with Cena delivering, a tragic multiverse twist, and a brutal arc pitting Peacemaker against version of himself and the man who killed his dad. Superman (2025): Gunn's official Superman reboot (starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult as Lex) skips a traditional origin story and drops us into a hopeful, charismatic world where Superman isn't a god, he's a human-hearted hero—complete with Krypto the dog and a screwball romance tone. Grossed over US $600 m globally; critics praise its lightness and earnestness, though some say it's overstuffed Fisk Season 3 (Netflix): Kitty Flanagan returns as Helen Tudor‑Fisk in this quirky Aussie probate-law comedy. Now a partner at Gruber & Fisk, she navigates bonkers estate cases and awkward networking snafus. Fans found it charming, though some say the third season lacks the flawless flow of earlier ones.

It's a different kind of show this week as Darren and Adam discuss the recently released Superman film. The movie, directed by James Gunn, stars David Corenswet as Superman. The discussion includes a look at box office results and factors contributing to them, criticism of art and the various things we like and dislike about the film. Though it isn't a particularly sciencey topic, we can't help but apply our own brand of critical thinking to some aspects of the film. The film is currently in theatres worldwide and available to purchase digitally. It's recommended that you watch it before listening to this episode as there are plenty of spoilers, if you care about that kind of thing.

John welcomes second-term Democratic congressman and former mayor of Long Beach, CA, Robert Garcia to talk about the imperative for his party to move away from “respectability politics” to combat the Trump 2.0 agenda. Garcia explains why the Texas redistricting fight transcends the particulars of the Lone Star State as a central part of Donald Trump's plan not just to steal the 2026 midterm elections but to stay in office past 2028—and the Jefrey Epstein scandal, far from subsiding during the congressional recess, is only gathering steam. Garcia also waxes poetic about his love for Superman, what the character means to many gay Americans such as himself, and why, for all of David Corenswet's swagger in the role on the big screen this summer, Christopher Reeve remains (now and forever) the gold standard Man of Steel. James Gunn's Superman (2025) is in cinemas right now, and is really good! It has a wonderful central performance by David Corenswet, and is as colourful as it is hopeful, and we need that right now. As I'm off this week, it felt like a good time to revisit the late Christopher Reeve's iconic performances in Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III & Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.Technically the first ever quadruple-bill episode (if you also count the Richard Donner cut of Superman II, which we do), as voted for by Patrons of this podcast for, on the history and legacy of Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III & Superman IV: The Quest for Peace ! The sequels to the previous episode on SupermanSUPERMAN II was inevitable after Richard Donner completed 75% of the movie, filmed at the same time as Superman (1978). His work on the sequel was halted during Superman's production, but as Superman flew into the box office and became a critical and financial success, the sequel was fired up again... and Donner himself was unceremoniously fired from the movie by the Salkinds, and replaced with Richard Lester; a move that didn't go down well with the cast and crew...SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT came about due to the open secret of Richard Donner's material existing in a vault somewhere. After a few legal issues, notably with the estate of Marlon Brando for the production of Superman Returns, a new 2001 DVD version of Superman also led to the discovery of 6 tonnes of unused, previously lost material shot by Richard Donner for Superman II. In an unprecedented (at the time) fan campaign to see Donner's cut, it was finally released to acclaim in 2006...SUPERMAN III is less of a Superman movie, and more of a comedy vehicle for the late, great Richard Pryor, but that didn't mean it was easy to get made. A lot of people were still annoyed at the Salkinds for their treatment of Richard Donner, including Christopher Reeve himself. Reeve almost didn't return as the iconic character, but changed his mind and relished playing Superman vs Superman (which was also almost the title of the movie), but in retrospect it would be a movie he wouldn't have too much fun with, despite the slapstick tone...SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE would only be made after the Salkinds sold the rights to The Cannon Group; a production company known for making low quality movies en masse to make as much profit as possible. Cannon's plan though was big franchises: they bought Superman with the intent of spending $36 million on Superman IV. They were also making Masters of the Universe, the first big screen adventure for He-Man. But Masters of the Universe's financial woes would drastically affect Superman IV, with disastrous consequences for the Superman franchise, and leading to a 19-year wait for Superman to return...This episode was originally released on 16th November 2023Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. Happy Tuesday! With a new version of Superman hitting movie theaters, I was so happy to chat with one of my favorite Men of Steel this week - you guys, it's Brandon Routh! You know Brandon from playing Clark Kent/Superman in Superman Returns. He also played Daniel Shaw on Chuck, Todd Ingram in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Ray Palmer/The Atom across the Berlanti Arrow Universe. We talk about this in the interview, but I feel like Brandon's version of Superman maybe didn't get the appreciation it deserved at the time. It was interesting to talk with him about living up to the legacy of Christopher Reeve and how it feels to watch David Corenswet wear the blue cape. We also discuss how Brandon was able to find closure by playing Superman again in the 2019 Arrowverse crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” I really enjoyed this conversation and Brandon is such a lovely, grounded guy. I can't wait to see him in his new film Ick, directed by one of my favorite directors Joseph Kahn (who also directed me in the short Power/Rangers). Be sure to stick around after the interview for the hindsight, straight from a hotel in Vancouver.
