Paper Son: Chinese American Citizen.  Chinese immigration to America was unique for various reasons.  All of this is the subject of my new series. I begin with the historical account of early American naturalization and immigration events, politics, and jurisprudence.  From the early years I work through and discuss first the Gold Rush and then the construction of the intercontinental railroad to the onslaught of Chinese immigration into the United States. Eventually leading to violence, exclusion, and deportation of Chinese persons.  All this finally led to the United States Government's acknowledgement and apology.  Including a recognition of Chinese American contributions. The discussion about naturalization and immigration inevitably leads to the questions of (1) who should be an American; and (2) what is an American?Support the show

This week we discuss the dark history of the world's most infamous prison. Sitting in the chilly waters of San Fransisco Bay, Alcatraz was the home of America's most difficult and dangerous criminals including Al Capone and Robert "Birdman of Alcatraz" Stroud. Over the years, 36 men in 14 different attempts would try to escape the island. Whether or not some of them were successful is still up for debate. In the sweltering summer heat of 1985, the terrified citizens of Los Angeles made sure their windows and doors were locked, as a prowler was on the loose. Initially dubbed by media as "The Valley Intruder," as his crime spree spread to San Francisco he would eventually be known as "The Night Stalker." Any surviving witnesses had one common memory; their curly-haired attacker, who reeked of wet leather, also had wide-spaced, rotting teeth and horrible halitosis. In part one of our coverage of Richard Ramirez, we discussed his abusive childhood, his sadistic and violent father figures and we began discussing his crime spree. What do you get when you combine an impressive education, experience in tech marketing, and a love of stand-up comedy and storytelling? You get Kathy Klotz-Guest, founder of Keeping It Human! Kathy is a textbook example of creative problem solving and out-of-the-box thinking. People create products and services. People use products and services. Yet the traditional approaches Kathy found in her mid-90's tech marketing jobs seemed to completely ignore the people and humanity. As intelligent humans are prone to do, Kathy saw a problem, then set out to solve it. Armed with the skills she was honing doing stand-up company and improv after hours, Kathy started to introduce idea that telling stories and bringing humanity into the picture could change everything in marketing. Long before YouTube and social media changed the face of marketing, Kathy was laying the groundwork. Improv and comedy were fun and invigorating. Corporate tech marketing was not. Armed with the idea that people relate to real people, humor and even vulnerability, Kathy left the corporate world behind and set out to turn marketing and selling on its ear. She was brave enough to call the marketing establishment on its tone-deafness. Using the first feedback coming back across the early Internet, Kathy started to convince the establishment that she was on to something. Marketing was really storytelling. It required experimentation and risk taking and a willingness for brands to abandon the safety of the corporate monolithic image. Brands had to become human, and Kathy was ready to teach that lesson. What followed was 20 years of innovation and creativity in storytelling on both business and comedy staged in the San Fransisco Bay area. There have been seminars, workshops, speaking engagements, and books. When Kathy says things, smart marketers listen. Her commitment to creatively changing the face of that business is paying off, and its a GREAT story. Imagine that? An expert storyteller with a great story to tell. Thanks Kathy! When not on trails she is either working in the lab, traveling to races, or annoying her partner in crime, husband Bunsak Pra. On the podcast, she talks about her history in gymnastics and how obstacle racing gave her a second chance to be an athlete and more.    Find Rea:  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rkolbl   Instagram: http://instagram.com/reakolbl   Show Sponsored by:  Four Sigmatic - http://www.foursigmatic.com Use code: DIYS to save 10% on your order   Keto Kookie - http://ketokookie.com?aff=156  Use Code: DIYS to save 10% on your order   Mistobox Coffee Club - http://mbox.coffee/Y9FA Use Code: DIYS to save $10 on your subscription   Full Shownotes:  http://www.dirtinyourskirt.com Join the Facebook Group:  http://www.dirtinyourskirt.com/tribe Support the Show: http://www.dirtinyourskirt.com/support

Subscribe to the Slow Boat Sailing podcast for free on iTunes and Stitcher! Native Alaskans Erik and Meagan bought a boat in the San Fransisco Bay area and sailed it down the often unforgiving California coast to the warm waters of Mexico. It may be a surprise to the followers of their blockbuster, YouTube channel Resolute Sets Sail, what they did next. Instead of turning west to the islands of the south Pacific as is more popular or heading through the Panama canal towards the Caribbean, Erik and Meagen went on some epic month long offshore passages to Hawaii and Alaska. Learn about their problems importing their dog into Hawaii. (I could not believe it! U.S. Citizens have to jump through hoops to take their dog to Hawaii.) Learn about the travels of these low-budget adventurers under sail in their Cascade 36. They are super cool, and they make great videos!       Before we get into an interview we have an audio sample of my Navigation Rules: International and Inland (Abridged), Study Guide for USCG Captains' and Merchant Mariner Exam on CD Baby. It is the least expensive study course for the toughest exam on the USCG captain's exam that I know of at $9.99. I edited this interview during my 27-day passage at sea from Ecuador to French Polynesia, which was hard because we had limited electricity, and I need to buy a newer faster computer to edit podcasts and video. After the Slow Boat was hit by a whale half-way through the 3,500 nm trip, I got much busier with managing downwind sails, autopilot, and engine bleeding problems. I'll talk about that trip in the next episode. This episode is being uploaded in Tahiti, which has MUCH faster internet than Hiva Oa in the Marquesas. I was only in Hiva Oa for less than a week before having to come back home for work. I hope to release episode 8 of the Slow Boat Sailing YouTube channel's round the world vlog before the next podcast. If you are a YouTube subscriber, send me a private message on Facebook or Twitter with your USA address by Wednesday, January 11, 2017, to be in a drawing for the first ever printed copy of Slow Boat to Cuba. This is a one of a kind collectors edition of the Amazon sailing eBook bestseller on its first day on sale. I'll show the results of the drawing in episode 8 of Slow Boat Sailing's vlog series.   We will be running contest where our most loyal Patreon supporters can become part of our crew literally as we explore the paradise islands of the South Pacific. Patrons of the round the world vlog and podcast get bonus podcast episodes and free audiobooks of How To Sail Around the World Part-Time and Slow Boat to Cuba. They get never before released audiobook chapters of Slow Boat to the Bahamas. Slow Boat to the Bahamashttps://www.amazon.com/Slow-Boat-Bahamas-Linus-Wilson-ebook/dp/B018OUI1Q2/ and How to Sail Around the World-Part Timehttps://www.amazon.com/How-Sail-Around-World-Part-Time-ebook/dp/B01B0OFYNW/ have been #1 sailing bestseller on Amazon.  Support the vlog and podcast athttps://www.patreon.com/slowboatsailing When we hit $80 per round the world vlog episode or podcast episode, I will give away 2 weeks in a private berth for two to one of our Patrons. Patrons will be randomly selected based on their long-term support on Patreon. This is several thousand dollar value. Captained charters of similarly sized monohulls usually exceed $400 per day. Thus, this reward is over a $5,000 value. The timing of that berth depends on the schedules of the winner and Captain Linus Wilson. I hope a Patron can join the Slow Boat in the Marquesas this summer. The rewards of being a Patreon far outweigh the costs. Since starting the podcast and YouTube channel, we have had to upgrade our cameras, computer hard drives, and audio equipment. Podcasts must pay hosting fees. We have incurred high internet access fees in foreign countries to put out a regular podcast and to upload videos. For every hour of podcast or minute of video many hours of work must go into them to produce them. We only produce highly edited podcasts and videos because we believe our listeners and viewers time is so valuable. The vlog is also a video cruising guide of the places we visit focused on the seamanship necessary to visit the exotic foreign ports that we visit. The vlogs recount the adventures of the Slow Boat crew. The host of the podcast and the captain of the Slow Boat is Linus Wilson who holds a “six pack” captain’s licenses issued by the United States Coast Guard. The “Slow Boat” is an Island Packet 31′. There are 13 episodes planned for season 1.https://slowboatsailing.wordpress.com/2016/09/18/3-new-episodes-planned-for-slow-boat-sailings-season-1-13-planned/ Hopefully, we will have the support to film many more seasons of our round the world voyage. Season 1 goes from New Orleans, to Florida, to Cuba, stops at Providencia, though the Panama Canal, and across the equator into the South Pacific. Season 2 will feature the trip to and cruising in the most beautiful and remote islands in the world, the Marquesas. If you win the Patreon crew drawing, you could be a star in season 2. She talks about how they use permaculture on their ranch to increase species diversity and to increase the water holding capacity of the soil. She touches on how to get into ranching, the advantages of small herd dairy, and the importance of leasing land. Key Takeaways from this Episode: -The healing power of using proper livestock rotational management on a landscape is tremendous. Doniga often sees the benefits after just one or two rotations. The disturbance created by the livestock starts to build organic matter in the soil, sequester carbon, increase water infiltration, and that then leads to increased species diversity. -The big impact of stock ponds. Early keypoint dams have played a huge role in the health of their farm. Water is kept on site, instead of running off site, causing erosion. Retaining this water has helped to rehydrate the landscape. -Don't be afraid to lease land. Land is prohibitively expensive in California, so leasing is a good option for ranching. It will require some work, but a lot of land is available. Visit www.permaculturevoices.com/12 for show notes.

BLAME SALLY is one of the most powerful word-of-mouth success stories in recent years.. Each of the four women put her individual career aside to start Blame Sally in the San Fransisco Bay-area when they were in their late thirties and forties the age at which bands are traditionally supposed to break up and begin solo careers. Their latest CD is "Speeding Ticket and a Valentine" released on Ninth Street Opus.Water." THE TWILITE BROADCASTERS continues the longstanding tradition of two part rural harmony vocals with simple acoustic string instrument accompaniment once common in the Southern part of the United States (starting in the 1930's). The irinfluences include The Monroe Brothers,The Louvin Brothers, The Stanley Brothers, Jim and Jesse, and more but have a sound that is uniquely theirs. Adam Tanner and Mark Jackson formed the group in 2009 in Weaverville, North Carolina. They have just released a new recording called "The Trail of Time."
