In this episode of the Coast To Coasties Podcast, I sit down with MST1 Gavin Kline and discuss the highly requested episode of what the job of being a Marine Inspector involves. Marine Inspections is a highly sought after career to get into for the Coast Guard because of the plentiful career opportunities after the Coast Guard and for the amazing work-life balance the job provides while in the Coast Guard. We list the pathways to become a marine inspector and what we do in the day to day life of an inspector. While there are a lot of technical terms in this field we break down the job into an easily understandable language so everyone can understand and make a mental picture of what we do out in the field. This is an amazing job that is highly competitive to get into however, once you gain the skillsets inspectors develop, you will be highly marketable in the maritime field the rest of your life, so I highly recommend anyone looking to make themselves marketable or interested in making the Coast Guard a career, listen to this episode and check out why we love working as Marine Inspectors! Thank you!

I am both a suicide attempt and childhood rape survivor turned two-time TED Talker and international mental health trainer. David Woods Bartley has seen his fair share of successes and setbacks, from directing a nationally recognized nonprofit to battling the long-term effects of childhood sexual trauma and a life-threatening mental illness. The latter, a brutal knock-down, drag-out fight with clinical depression, led David to a suicide attempt. Thanks to the support of many people and being shown the necessity of putting one's self-care on a pedestal, David continues the essential yet challenging journey from the isolation of mental “hellness” to the inclusive space of mental wellness. His life having been saved, David is committed to moving the conversation about suicide, male sexual trauma, and mental illness from the dark shadows where they now live to the forefront of public concern. In doing so, his mission is to shine a bright light on the crisis we now face and open doors to the possibility of mental health for everyone, everywhere. Currently, David is a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the International Association for Youth Mental Health, the National Storytelling Network's Healing Story Alliance, and Active Minds. In addition, David holds certifications in Mental Health First Aid for Adults and Youth, SafeTALK (Suicide Awareness for Everyone), and the suicide prevention technique known as QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer). In addition to giving two TED talks and being named a 2021 Mental Health Champion by the prestigious Steinberg Institute, David has presented more than 600 times to audiences across the United States, Canada, Central America, and India, giving in-person and virtual presentations on the subjects of suicide, male sexual trauma, mental health, organizational culture, and servant leadership. David has been invited to present to organizations such as the United States Army, the United States Coast Guard, the Food and Drug Administration, OSH India, Sutter Health, AbleTo, the California Highway Patrol, the Indiana Organization for Nursing Leadership, the University of Connecticut, Boston College, the California Northstate School of Medicine, and a wide range of elementary, middle and high schools, community organizations, and diverse faith denominations 2-TimeTEDx Speaker | International Mental Health Presenter | SME on Suicide 2021 Steinberg Institute Mental Health Champion Links and Socials www.davidwoodsbartley.com X: david@davidwoodsbartley.com FACEBOOK: @davidwoodsbartley

Tracey Brown is an internationally-recognized speaker in the mindset industry with her signature speech “The Disease of Playing Small,” featured in Season 4 of the Amazon Prime Video series Speak Up. Her journey into understanding how our minds are set was born from trauma—the literal flames of life-threatening burns at the age of eight—as well as the trauma associated with doing four years of Search and Rescue and Marine Safety in the United States Coast Guard. Her #1 best-selling book, Rescue to Recovery, is her story of navigating over 30 years of undiagnosed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Not unusual for veterans, but typical of all too many people since the Covid-19 pandemic. While working as a scar tissue therapist, Tracey realized that there are great similarities between physical and emotional injuries and, when left unaddressed, similar ways in which they limit us. Tracey's mission is to help others understand that we have great power in our choices and can train our minds to serve our highest good. In this episode of The Real ResQ, host Jason Quinn is joined by Ryan Beard, a flight mechanic in the United States Coast Guard. Beard recounts his first rescue mission, where he and his crew saved two sailors whose sailboat had run aground on the Galveston, Texas, jetty. This successful rescue earned him an achievement medal and the USCG District 8 Rescue of the Year award. Another notable rescue involved a medevac of a crew member with a critical blast injury. Beard's disciplined crew resource management and quick decision-making skills were crucial in these high-pressure situations. During Hurricane Harvey, Beard and his crew were one of the first to respond to the storm and perform rescue operations. They faced challenging conditions, including a violent squall line and rising floodwaters. They embarked on multiple missions, hoisting people in critical condition and navigating through power lines and dangerous obstacles. Beard's actions and skills were instrumental in the rescue of 32 people. In addition to flying, he also assisted with maintenance tasks and fueling operations, contributing to the success of the massive air rescue operation that saved and assisted 1,738 lives. Beard talks about the dedication and hard work of the Coast Guard during the hurricane relief efforts and the camaraderie among the team. He also discusses his transition to The Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) and the training he underwent to become a precision marksman. He emphasizes the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone and challenging yourself to learn and grow. We conclude our conversation with Beard offering advice to those considering joining the Coast Guard. He encourages anyone to reach out for more information. Enjoy! Key Moments:The voyage to a data-driven US Coast Guard (5:21)Navigating data-driven approaches to US Coast Guard operations (20:28) Balancing experience-based decision making with data-informed decision making (25:34)In whose data do you trust? (30:10) Measuring the value of data (33:80)Should an AI ethicist be part of the team or should everyone really be an ethicist? (45:00) Key Quotes:“Up until three years ago when we started this, some people – and really our entire organization – just thought data as IT. They didn't think much past that, because no one had ever really challenged them to think about it. So it wasn't really thought of as, ‘this is the data that we have, and this is the commander's business. This is how the business is going to run. It's not just letting IT figure it out.'” “I think that technology has helped us along the way to visualize data that otherwise would be difficult and time consuming to conceptualize and understand. And as we continue to find ways to make humans understand better what it is that they're looking at – especially in extremely dynamic and complex data situations – I think you'll start to see a shift of trust and that's really experience. It's experience in using data informed decision making activities.” “Would an ethics, an AI ethics advisor to the CDAO be a great thing? Absolutely. Are we all just ethicists? Yes, but I would say that there is a lot of understanding needed. There's a huge area where you could be an expert in the ethics of artificial intelligence and provide sound guidance day after day. I would think that this particular type of employee would be extremely valuable.” Mentions:U.S. Coast Guard 11 Missions AI U.S. Executive Orders White House Orders Federal Agencies to Name Chief AI Officers America's Cyber Defense AgencyMake Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life… And Maybe the World Bio: Captain Brian Erickson currently serves as the United States Coast Guard's first Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer and is principally responsible for the coordination of data and artificial intelligence activities across the organization.
