Today's topic is a recent film that does a great job with one of the trickiest types of stories to tell in film-making - true stories which the audience is already familiar with. In this episode, we talk about... The timing for the film's release, and all the ways that makes it more poignant. The process for bringing the film to Sundance, then making a deal with Netflix, and then adding high-profile backers like the Obamas. Sara's career as a writer and director. How she got involved with this project, how 9/11 impacted her, and how she brought her experiences in post-9/11 NYC to the film. How Sara likes to change genres and experiment with her range, and how she is able to land a variety of films to work on. Ways Sara simplifies her cerebral thought process to communicate directions to actors. Choices Sara made as she was deciding how to film the movie and the types of cameras used. What Sara is currently writing and other ideas she has in the pipeline. The cultural shift that happened after 9/11 and how it even impacted the kinds of movies being made. Sara's advice for new filmmakers - which is to only take projects you're excited about! This week on BEHIND THE LENS, a reflection on 9/11 and the Victim's Compensation Fund and Special Master Ken Feinberg with our prerecorded exclusive interview with director SARA COLANGELO talking about WORTH, and then a shift to something lighter as writer/director JON SHERMAN is live talking about his new film THEY/THEM/US. First up this week is a surprise non-scheduled prerecorded exclusive interview with director SARA COLANGELO talking in-depth about one of the complex issues surrounding the attacks of 9/11, the Victim Compensation Fund, now brought to the big screen with the narrative film WORTH. Written by Max Borenstein and adapted from Special Master attorney Ken Feinberg's memoirs, WORTH is a film that's more than worth your time and your compassion. Already known for her exemplary storytelling with the acclaimed Little Accidents and The Kindergarten Teacher, with WORTH, Colangelo ups the ante to deliver a powerful and compelling cinematic telling of this chapter in the history of 9/11. With a cast led by Michael Keaton in an award-worthy turn as Ken Feinberg, WORTH also stars Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, Tate Donovan, Laura Benanti, Shunari Ramanathan, and Talia Balsam, each brings a humanized emotional resonance to each character and the film as a whole. Watching Keaton is a master class in acting. Then a big post-world premiere welcome to writer/director JON SHERMAN who joins us live talking about his latest comedy, THEY/THEM/US! Take a listen as Jon goes into the laughs, foibles, fun, and frenzy that the blending of families brings to the story, the genesis of the film, structuring story, crafting the comedic elements while never forgetting the drama of family, the considerations of visual design and working with his cinematographer, score and needledrops, editing comedy, casting, shooting as one of the first films approved to film during pandemic lockdown with industry protocols in place, the challenges of shooting on a 20-day schedule but with the bonus of having a first-rate union crew who would normally be tied up with larger projects were it not for the pandemic, budgeting struggles with finding an additional $75-100K beyond the budgeted film exclusively for covid protocols with safety and testing, incorporating local Ohio community into the film, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

_____ Cinemático é uma produção do B9 Apresentação: Carlos Merigo Coordenação Geral: Carlos Merigo, Ju Wallauer e Cris Bartis Produção e Pesquisa: Pedro Strazza Edição e Sonorização: Alexandre Pottaschef e Mariana Leão Coordenação Digital: Agê Barros, Pedro Strazza e Hiago Vinicus Atendimento e Comercialização: Rachel Casmala, Camila Mazza e Telma Zenaro See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fresh off quarantine and on the precipice of returning to it, Jonathan (@Berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) return to the theme of Small Screen. That is to say, these films are all streaming originals or at least available on a streaming service. It's a good way to check off some movies that slipped passed the two of them over the years or maybe even this year. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 1 - The Kindergarten Teacher (2018) Corey had first pick for this theme and she selected the Maggie Gyllenhaal lead vehicle The Kindergarten Teacher (2018) which is streaming on Netflix. This is the American remake of an Israeli film written and directed by Nadav Lapid. The 2018 version of the film is directed by Sara Colangelo and stars Gyllenhaal, Gael García Bernal, and Ato Blankson-Wood. In the film, Gyllenhaal plays the titular kindergarten teacher who becomes obsessed with one of her students whom she believes is a child poetry prodigy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Sara Colangelo joins us to discuss her process for working with actors, the advantages of a Netflix release and why directing shouldn't be a dictatorship.
More interesting and thought-provoking discussions on BEHIND THE LENS this episode with three very talented directors as each brings issues of human nature to the forefront through film. JAMIELYNN LIPPMAN and MICHAEL GREENE are live, while we've got a prerecorded interview with SARA COLANGELO. First up this week is part of our prerecorded interview with writer/director SARA COLANGELO talking about her latest film, THE KINDERGARTEN TEACHER starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and newcomer Parker Sevak. Adapted from a screenplay and film by Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid, Sara explores the psychological complexity of a kindergarten teacher and her obsession with a seemingly prodigal student named Jimmy. Questions of moral and ethical ambiguity arise and Colangelo digs deep with indelible performances, emotional depth and a distinctive visual palette. Then, MICHAEL GREENE joins us live talking about his new film, LIVE. Last week actor Asante Jones was on hand talking about working with Michael, his acting process, and the cautionary tale told with LIVE. This week, Michael talks about the film from the point of view as writer and director, the challenges of getting the film made, finding tone, casting, and other elements of the process. Rounding out this episode of #BTLRadioShow is writer/director JAMIELYN LIPPMAN who returns to BTL this year with her latest documentary - 3 YEARS IN PAKISTAN: THE ERIK AUDE STORY. Erik's story made the news more than 14 years ago when he was arrested and held prisoner in a Pakistani prison accused of a crime he didn't commit - drug trafficking. An up and coming actor and stuntman, Erik's life was put on hold - and almost ended as he was on death row - before those working in the United States to secure his release were finally successful, with Erik retaining his own integrity by not making a deal to cop a plea and confess. While Erik's story was told in 2010 by the Nat Geo show "Locked Up Abroad", there was much that wasn't covered. Calling on her own friendship with Erik, Jamielyn felt it important to dig deeper, provide more context and explore the man Erik was and who he has since become. A 2 1/2 year process in which interviews were obtained (and in some cases, refused), dramatic recreations were conceived and shot, and a lengthy editing process, Jamielyn talks about it all. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
