Based on the novel Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty chronicles the 1980s Showtime era of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team featuring notable NBA stars Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Series co-creator and showrunner Max Borenstein describes the challenges of having to imagine what certain moments and conversations looked like without having been in the room: "Our role is to take the things we know - I look at it as the tip of the iceberg... the role of the drama is to then imaginatively reconstruct what might have been or could have been underneath the surface, and oftentimes.. you're imagining your way into that room where you have no idea exactly what was said." Borenstein goes on to explain what drew him to tell this particular story from this particular time period: "I happen to be a basketball fan, but what was exciting to me was not just retelling the story of this particular basketball team; it was that this particular basketball team and this dynasty speaks to a change in the way entertainment worked and the way celebrity works... I think the Showtime Lakers [are] a perfect prism through which to view that moment in time." Season one of Winning Time is now available on HBO Max. There weren't a lot of Jews involved with the "Showtime" Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s. But there was Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and coaches Paul Westhead and Pat Riley, and all these big characters and iconic stories are coming to TV in a new show, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, debuting March 6, 2022, on HBO Max (Crave for Canadians). Aside from a handful of Jewish actors involved—notably Adrien Brody and Jason Segal as coaches Riley and Westhead, respectively—the real Judaism comes behind the scenes. The show's creators, Jim Hecht and Max Borenstein, are both Jewish, as is the man who wrote the book on which the show is based. Jeff Pearlman is a veteran sportswriter who's written several books that haven't been turned into TV shows, as well as one, now, that has. He joins for a lengthy interview about his book, his writing process and, to settle an argument with his mother, his bar mitzvah. This week on BEHIND THE LENS, a reflection on 9/11 and the Victim's Compensation Fund and Special Master Ken Feinberg with our prerecorded exclusive interview with director SARA COLANGELO talking about WORTH, and then a shift to something lighter as writer/director JON SHERMAN is live talking about his new film THEY/THEM/US. First up this week is a surprise non-scheduled prerecorded exclusive interview with director SARA COLANGELO talking in-depth about one of the complex issues surrounding the attacks of 9/11, the Victim Compensation Fund, now brought to the big screen with the narrative film WORTH. Written by Max Borenstein and adapted from Special Master attorney Ken Feinberg's memoirs, WORTH is a film that's more than worth your time and your compassion. Already known for her exemplary storytelling with the acclaimed Little Accidents and The Kindergarten Teacher, with WORTH, Colangelo ups the ante to deliver a powerful and compelling cinematic telling of this chapter in the history of 9/11. With a cast led by Michael Keaton in an award-worthy turn as Ken Feinberg, WORTH also stars Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, Tate Donovan, Laura Benanti, Shunari Ramanathan, and Talia Balsam, each brings a humanized emotional resonance to each character and the film as a whole. Watching Keaton is a master class in acting. Then a big post-world premiere welcome to writer/director JON SHERMAN who joins us live talking about his latest comedy, THEY/THEM/US! Take a listen as Jon goes into the laughs, foibles, fun, and frenzy that the blending of families brings to the story, the genesis of the film, structuring story, crafting the comedic elements while never forgetting the drama of family, the considerations of visual design and working with his cinematographer, score and needledrops, editing comedy, casting, shooting as one of the first films approved to film during pandemic lockdown with industry protocols in place, the challenges of shooting on a 20-day schedule but with the bonus of having a first-rate union crew who would normally be tied up with larger projects were it not for the pandemic, budgeting struggles with finding an additional $75-100K beyond the budgeted film exclusively for covid protocols with safety and testing, incorporating local Ohio community into the film, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Legendary Entertainment and Warner Brothers now have four kaiju movies in their MonsterVerse franchise.  Kaiju, giant monsters that rampage through cities, are once again on the big (and small screen) in 2021's GODZILLA VS. KONG.  This was a highly anticipated film where two of the most iconic monsters in movie history go head to head in a major Hollywood film. Cartographer and geologist Dr. Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård) is hired by apex Cybernetics to investigate the center of the earth.  When Kong is endangered from an attack from Godzilla, Monarch decides to move him to Antartica where an entrance to the earth's innercore may exist.  Soon Godzilla's rampage back on the surface makes Lind and others wonder if there is a greater conspiracy than just angry monsters. Genre director Adam Wingard directs a film based off the screenplay by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein.  The cast includes Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza Gonzalez, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, among others.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this latest big monster movie and give their thoughts where it fits in the MonsterVerse as well as other recent Kaiju films such as RAMPAGE (2018).

Andrew and Manu chat about the rumored details behind the prequel and also briefly touch on the update about the Long Night spin-off possibly going into production in October. Then, it's back to "The Pointy End," which came to its own pointy end in a series of scenes: Tyrion & the Hill Tribes meeting Tywin in the Lannister camp, Robb showing his mettle when a scout interrupts his War Council, and King's Landing, where Barristan Selmy is unceremoniously dismissed from the Kingsguard and Sansa begs for her father's life. Tywin & Tyrion's oh-so-complicated relationship is explored, as are the Hill Tribes, Barristan's great respect, the Lannisters quietly orchestrating Sansa's request, and the show's subtleties with wine, furtive glances, camerawork, and more.
