Make sure you're wearing hearing protection for this latest episode of TDBR, because we're talking about 2019's Sound of Metal, the 2019 slice of life drama directed by Darius Marder which follows a metal drummer coping with hearing loss. This film was a huge hit at the Academy Awards, managing to nab both Best Sound Design and Best Editing, plus a few nominations for acting. It stars Riz Ahmed, Paul Raci, and Olivia Cooke. Believe us when we say that this film comes across as a horror movie to musicians like ourselves - wear earplugs at concerts people! We briefly discuss how much emotional resonance can carry a film, the fear of losing something you take for granted, and why a Miller Lite brewery is required to fulfill the needs of Ohio alone. Thanks for listening guys! Our next couple of episodes will be on Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood', and the television series 'Better Call Saul'.

Sidey is famed for his sartorial elegance so it should come as no surprise that he picked the Top 5 Suits for us to discuss. By the end of this week's show, you'll know your two-piece from your three-piece, your tuxedo from your dinner jacket and your shell suit from your tracksuit. SOUND OF METAL is director Darius Marder's 2019 story about Ruben, a drummer in the experimental heavy metal band Blackgammon and the impact of his devastating and sudden hearing loss on his ongoing issues with sobriety. Riz Ahmed was Oscar nominated for his portrayal and it's a transformational and powerful performance but it's supporting actor Paul Raci, himself the son of Deaf parents, who steals the movie as Vietnam veteran and recovering alcoholic Joe, the charismatic leader of the community. A rallying call not to treat individuals with disabilities as broken, waiting to be fixed, we all enjoyed this moving journey alongside the fascinating insights into the Deaf community and culture it also provides. As a father to two girls I've been subjected to more than my fair share of unicorns over the years and feel strongly that this week's kids feature, the animated series REGULAR SHOW, has it right: The Unicorns Have Got To Go, which is coincidentally the title of the episode we watched. Mordecai and Rigby find their friendship tested when Mordecai is more interested in buying new cologne 'Dudetime' in order to attract waitress Margaret than spending time with Rigby playing the latest exciting video game, Strong Johns. But when Mordecai sprays himself with the aftershave the only thing attracted to him is a group of douchebag unicorn bros, out for a good time and definitely not trying to trick you into drinking a cup of their suspiciously spermy looking cocktails. Soon things get out of hand; Rigby's trampoline gets broken and park manager Benson, a sentient gumball machine, appears to be sexually assaulted. Will the boys rid themselves of the hangers on and patch up their failing friendship inside 12 minutes? We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Lost and Found - The Place Beyond the Pines - Episode 61The Place Beyond the Pines (Free on MPlayer, also available on Hungama Play, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube, and VI Movies)Welcome to OTTplay Lost and Found, one podcast that talks about critically acclaimed films and shows but lesser-known. I'm your host NikhilFilmmaker Derek Cianfrance is probably not one of the biggest names in Hollywood, but he is regarded as one of the best indie filmmakers in recent years. Some of his most notable films include Blue Valentine, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, and he is also credited with co-writing the story for the acclaimed 2019 film The Sound of Metal by Darius Marder, starring Riz Ahmed and Olivia Cooke. However, Cianfrance's best film is also one of most lesser-known films of the past decade, The Place Beyond the Pines and it's our Lost and Found film for today. It was released in 2012 and features a star-studded ensemble of Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Emory Cohen, Dane DeHaan, and Ben Mendelsohn. It also features a stacked supporting cast of Mahershala Ali, Bruce Greenwood, Rose Byrne, and Ray Liotta. The plot is set in two timelines, the first of which revolves around Ryan Gosling's character Luke Glanton, a motorcycle stuntman working at a traveling carnival, who hopes to win back his former girlfriend's affections and to be a good father to his baby boy. However, circumstances force him to commit crimes in order to build a future for his loved ones. This puts him on a collision course with a policeman named Avery Cross, played by Bradley Cooper Years later, Luke and Avery's sons become best friends, unaware of the tragic history surrounding their fathers. Director Cianfrance has constructed the narrative taking inspiration from Shakespearean plays with themes surrounding destiny, revenge, and the complicated relationship between sons and fathers. The film is also a sombre reflection of a rotten society destroying the lives of its unsuspecting civilians. This slow-burner is undoubtedly one of the best films of the past decade. If you haven't watched The Place beyond the Pines yet, do so its streaming on MPlayer, also available on Hungama Play, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube, and VI Movies.Well that's the OTTplay Lost and Found for today, until the next episode it's your host Nikhil signing out.

In today's episode, Chinny and Emmett welcome Tim Rasmussen who not only has a degree in Peace Transformation, but is also the host of the podcast Pop Violence. The Play It Forward team borrows Pop Violence's concept of reviewing “movie/films that interlace critical perspectives about violence, justice, conflict, and peace” by discussing the film ‘Sound of Metal'. Through their conversation, themes from the movie begin to align with some of PeacePlayers core values such as ‘inside out transformation' and ‘seeing people as people'. Listen to learn how! For those who have not yet seen ‘Sound of Metal', We forgot to provide a description of the movie in the episode so here's one from Rotten Tomatoes: “During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. Utilizing startling, innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben's experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world.” Love movies and peace building and social justice? Movie of the Year: 2020Sound of Metal The Taste Buds discuss 2020's Sound of Metal! The Sound of Metal tells the story of a rock drummer, Ruben, who is losing his hearing and must learn to live with his new hearing loss while confronting all his old demons, chief among them an addiction to heroin, which, not to get political, but don't do heroin, everybody. The film follows Ruben as he parts from girlfriend Lou and begins the hard work of rebuilding his life and learning how to sit with the silence he now finds himself in. The movie asks how do we deal with loss? And how do we deal with never getting back those things most precious to us? Along the way, the audience is transported by Riz Ahmed's transcendent performance and rookie director Darius Marder's ambitious sound design. Both of which deliver the audience an experience that is at once moving and powerful even as it embraces the still and, yes, finally, the quiet. Tough questions Calling a movie “an actor's showcase” is often pejorative to the rest of the film. (A) is this movie an actor's showcase for Riz Ahmed and (B) Is that totally okay if you want to tell an intimate story? We get into this and also tackle Riz and Lou's relationship. We know relationships, so you don't want to miss that. Silly Season At one point, Mike says, "More like unsound and mental!" Which, to me, seems borderline. I like to stay further back from the edge than Mike, though, so I respect him. He also yells out, "That's Whiplash-style, baby!" And I think that is more the type of joke we aim to make around these parts. As sort of a weird joke, I am going to indicate here that Ryan wins this one by the score of 20-19, but also I am going to further indicate that I would think it was funny to just make something like that up. "Sound Of Metal" is one of the best films of 2020 and we have a treat for you all today. We conducted three separate interviews talking with key people involved in the making of the film. First up is supervising sound editor Nicolas Becker, who takes us into one of the year's best soundscapes. Then we have writer/director Darius Marder who tells us about the screenplay, working with the deaf community and the actors of the film. And then we have someone who is part of both groups, actor Paul Raci who plays Ruben's mentor Joe in the film. All of them have a unique perspective to lend in these fascinating conversations.
