Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to outlive some sicko's demented hobby games. We watched both Escape Room movies by Adam Robitel. When did we all stop loving the simple things in life? When did the pure pleasure of a video game or, I don't know, going for a walk in the park become boring and passé?Everything now is all trap myself in this, escape from that. How could the ultimate adrenaline rush become facing certain death for ephemeral thrills?Maybe these questions just prove that I'm not the thrill-seeking type. Call me boring, but after watching these two films, boring is what I'd rather be. Beats dying at the hands of some murderous lunatic.(Recorded on July 12, 2024)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Escape Room - The Movie Database (TMDB)Escape Room trailer - YouTubeEscape Room: Tournament of Champions - The Movie Database (TMDB)Escape Room: Tournament of Champions trailer - YouTubeTaylor Russell — The Movie Database (TMDB)Logan Miller — The Movie Database (TMDB)Tyler Labine — The Movie Database (TMDB)Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Resident Evil (2002) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Isabelle Fuhrman — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Purge (2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Nik Dodani — The Movie Database (TMDB)Atypical (TV Series 2017–2021) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Marathon Man (1976) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Oh, Dustin. We're baaaaaaack!! The Cadaver Dogs return, joined by Allison Broder of the Who's There? Podcast, with a brand new episode on the horrors of aging and dementia. We'll first dive into the popular found footage film THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN (2014), directed by Adam Robitel. College student Mia is making a documentary on Alzheimer's, and Deborah Logan and her daughter invite Mia to feature them as her main subjects. But what happens when Deborah's condition takes a turn for the supernatural? On the other side of the world, three generations of women come together when the oldest's mind begins to unravel in the Australian movie RELIC (2020), directed by Natalie Erika James. This one gets a bit experimental, but we're unafraid to discuss its symbolism from mazes to mold to that weird alien-like creature. 0:09:07 - The Taking of Deborah Logan 0:37:48 - Relic 1:06:24 - Comparisons 1:17:56 - Bone Reviews Follow us at:  instagram.com/cadaverdogspod twitter.com/cadaverdogspod . When she wasn't racing sled dogs in the snowy Midwest, Chelsea consumed all the cinema she could get her hands on. During high school she attended night classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where she assisted filmmaker Robert Banks Jr. in shooting Super 8 experimental horror films. Robert also introduced her to films like Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Larry Cohen's God Told Me To and Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes.   After high school, Chelsea attended Ohio University's Honors Tutorial College School of Film program where she focused on Directing. Upon graduating, Chelsea moved to sunny Los Angeles to pursue her filmmaking dreams. After working for comedy legends Ivan Reitman and Judd Apatow, Chelsea found her horror home at Blumhouse Productions (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister, The Purge, Get Out, Split, Us) where she served as the executive assistant to Jason Blum for several year. She also shadowed Adam Robitel on the 2018 Blumhouse film Insidious:The Last Key.   Since leaving her post at Blumhouse Productions, Chelsea started directing full time. Chelsea released four short films on Crypt TV, Slay Per View, Marco Polo, Project Hope, Under The Bed, which have exceeded over 1M views. On this week's episode, we're digging up queer writer/director Adam Robitel's found footage shocker The Taking of Deborah Logan! After discussing the tropes of the found footage sub-genre, we'll discuss Robitel's ties to the Paranormal Activity franchise, and how this film does and doesn't stand out from its peers. We'll also try to answer the most common questions brought up in discussions of the film: is the conflation of mental illness with possession offensive? Should the film have steered away from using First Nations/Indigenous practices as a plot point? (Why can't it just be a white person murder ritual, Karen?) and should more be made about Sarah's sexuality?Plus: old lady possession vs hot young girl possession (paging Jennifer Carpenter!), snake wrangler sex jokes, concerns about the number of attics in a single house and, of course, lezzing out over Sarah and Sheriff Tweedy. And of course: our thoughts on that money shot scene. Questions? Comments? Snark? Partly because the country is on lockdown and partly because Jonathan (@Berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) were not feeling like the previously planned theme was that compelling, April 2020 features Small Screen movies. These are films that are currently streaming on one service or another. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 4 - The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014) Corey loves horror and has been subscribed to Shudder for a while. They were offering a special so she decided to take the last pick of the month from there. A film crew shows up to Deborah Logan’s (Jill Larson) house where she and her daughter, Sarah Logan (Anne Ramsay) still live. The setting is very East Coast rural, and there is only Harris (Ryan Cutrona), the groundskeeper who hangs around to help Sarah and Deborah. Watch The Taking of Deborah LoganWatch on AmazonClick here to Watch The film crew is there to document Deborah’s descent into Alzheimers. The agreement is that the crew gets to make Deborah the focus of their documentary, and they will pay handsomely for that privilege. Sarah realizes that they need the money if Deborah is going to continue living and maintaining this home, but Deborah is private and would rather the crew not be there. As the days progress, disturbing signs of Deborah’s mental health quickly arise and give way to questions about whether this is the signs of a degenerative aging disease, or whether it’s something else. There are lots of signs of cult activity surrounding Deborah and her life of secrets as the town’s original telephone switchboard operator, but how much of it is nonsense, and how much is real. In the end, Sarah and the film crew end up with more Deborah than they bargained for. The Taking of Deborah Logan Review The Taking of Deborah Logan is a bit of an odd duckling on my second viewing. On my first viewing, I was so struck by the pacing and shocking nature of the visuals that I overlooked some of the film’s more problematic issues.  Don’t get me wrong, this film can almost stand on it’s disturbing scenes and tension built cleverly around a very real issue that many people have to face. But the wires begin to show a bit on a second viewing when you aren’t dazzled by the initial shocks in The Taking of Deborah Logan. I feel like a lot of the camera work for the documentary is extraneous, but not in a good way. Paranormal Activity 2 is a shining example of extraneous footage that works to build tension, but Deborah had a hodgepodge of silly angles and shaky cam footage that didn’t work in favor of the movie. That said, I really love this movie! The imagery, the cult aspect, the old person who can’t be controlled - It’s great. The execution of the whole thing is pretty darn good too. The pacing is really what makes this movie a must-see because it’s so fast that there is never a chance to get bored.  Did I mention the impressive and shocking imagery? Score 8/10 Spoilers This film is about Deborah’s descent into a weird kind of cult possession. It starts out looking like Deb just has some severe form of Alzheimer's,

Hey everyone and welcome back to Brutally Honest Reviews, only on The Brutally Honest Network. For those of whom were holding out for Saw 13...Sam (Shots Fired), here it is, lol. In all seriousness today we are reviewing a film that shocked a lot of us with the trailer. Yes, it's another death or escape kind of film in the same vein as the Saw franchise, however taking a different spin. This film, arguably with a largely no name cast aside from Tyler Labine of Reaper and Tucker & Dale Vs Evil is Directed by Adam Robitel. If you ever saw that super creepy meme floating around with the possessed woman slowly devouring a live woman's head whole in the dark, that's Adam's Directorial Debut. The Haunting of Deborah Logan. So, despite being new and this being a relatively old concept, we all thought a large portion of this movie was actually quite fresh and new and well done. We all had different takes in this fun review. Let us know what you think and remember to always keep it Brutally Honest. It's a January movie (not a good sign right?) but it's got a premise that's easy to deliver on. Are the deaths satisfying? Are the characters likable? Is the story ridiculous? Is there a twist? Is Karen from Daredevil any more tolerable? Most importantly, how bad is that sequel setup??  SPOILERS BEGIN at 13:19  Watch Escape Room on Amazon Support the show by giving us a review on iTunes Would you like to know more? Visit our Home.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. There have been many films where people are stuck in some sort of game or scenario that leaves them in a life or death situation. Examples include THE BELKO EXPIRMENT, CUBE, 13 SINS, SAW, THE COLLECTOR, THE KILLING ROOM, and EXAM just to name a few. The very first mainstream release of 2019 is ESCAPE ROOM which itself follows the same concept. Six individuals from different walks of life receive gifts to participate in an escape room; basically a form of LARP. The winner is guaranteed a ten thousand dollar prize if they can solve the puzzle. As the game begins, the participants find out that the game may not be a game at all, but a life or death trap. As people begin to die, each finds out their prior life events may actually be the reason they were picked in the first place. The film is directed by Adam Robitel who had directed successful horror films THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN and INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY. And the movie brings together in starring roles genre favorites Deborah Ann Woll, Tyler Labine, and Logan Miller. With a fairly good critical rating and successful financially, some think it may be a new franchise. Dark Discussions takes a look at this latest film in the line of “game-themed” horror and gives their thoughts. The Taking of Deborah Logan is another entry into the found footage genre that falls into every trap that the subgenre has to offer including being outright boring while also attempting to shock the audience. Written and directed by Adam Robitel, the film presents some interesting ideas about possession and disease but it ultimately falls short of being both a successful horror film or a worthy entry into the found footage subgenre. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Unfortunately as we get old, there are some diseases that folks are more apt to come down with. They seem to all be life threatening or debilitating to the individual in some way. One such disease is Alzheimer's Disease, a form of dementia that can eventually cause immobilization and death. Last year's film, The Taking of Deborah Logan, uses it as a catalyst for a horror film. Alzheimer's itself in some ways out horrifies the "actual" frights within the film. Mia, a college student working on a documentary on Alzheimer's, is given a grant for her college project. Deborah Logan, an older woman who has been diagnosed with the disease, agrees to be the subject of Mia's documentary. Mia and her crew set up at the woman's home and with the help of Deborah's daughter, Sarah, they agree to present both the disease and Mrs. Logan in a non-exploitative way. As expected when filming commences, Deborah's unpredictable behavior shows how the disease effects the everyday life on the Logan family. Yet, as time goes by, more bizarre things begin to occur that may not just be related to Alzheimer's. Produced by Bryan Singer, the film was co-written and directed by his long time collaborator, Adam Robitel, a character actor and jack-of-all-trades behind the scenes of films. Starring Emmy Award winning actress, Jill Larson, in a career defining role as Deborah Logan, the film has received many positive reviews and has been considered one of the best examples of cinéma vérité.
