A growing protest movement On 28 March, in downtime Jakarta across from the Sarinah department store, an unlikely group of protesters gathered holding signs and making speeches. The crowd largely consisted of middleclass women of various ages, gathered under the name ‘Suara Ibu Indonesia' (Voices of Indonesian Mothers). For the organisers, the choice of name and location for their protest was deliberately designed to evoke a moment in Indonesia's past, now 27 years ago, when in the final months of the autocratic Suharto regime an economic and political crisis saw student protests met with deadly violence at the hands of the military and police. Then a group called Suara Ibu Peduli (Voices of Concerned Mothers, SIP), tapped into growing concern within wider society about the state of their country. In late March 2025, as student protests at campuses and in front of law offices were once again met with violence by state law enforcement, the women who gathered in downtown Jakarta expressed their fear of a return to unbridled militarism and a contempt for democracy. The revision of the Military (TNI) Law a few weeks earlier, which opens the door for active military figures to occupy more and key positions in the government and bureaucracy, appears to have sparked a broadening of the growing protest movement. As one of the original SIP organisers, Karlina Supelli was quoted as saying, “If mothers have joined the protests, this means that the situation has become critical.” What compelled the Suara Ibu Indonesia protesters to go to the streets now? What are the urgent concerns of activists and students amid a time they describe as ‘Indonesia Gelap'? Can such opposition to the newly installed Prabowo government be sustained for the long haul? In this week's episode Jemma chats with Olin Montiero, a feminist activist, researcher, writer, consultant and producer. Olin has been working for the women 's movement since the 1990s and was a member of the Suara Ibu Peduli movement in 1998. She has founded several women organisations in Indonesia, including the network Peace Women Across the Globe Indonesia and ArtsforWomen, connecting women activists, artists, art workers and cultural workers for a feminist collaborative space. Olin facilitates feminist networks Jagat Setara (Online platform feminist discussion), Woke Asia Feminist (young feminist in Asia network), and FeministArt Community (a new young people discussion on art creativity and feminism). In 2025, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jemma Purdey from the Australia-Indonesia Centre, Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University, Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales and Tito Ambyo from RMIT. I guess if you had a little boy named “Tony” who lived in your mouth, and hid in your stomach you gotta trust your gut, right? Especially when shit is about to hit the fan. On this week's episode, The Babes cover a film that makes you not want to go to any remote, haunted destinations anytime soon - It's the iconic, unsettling 1980's horror-thriller: “The Shining”. We chop down the bathroom door to analyze the other side of the horrors of isolation, sinister obsession, telepathic heroes, AND how genius shouldn't come before human decency. After you check-in, let's jump on our tricycles, grab that bat, and have a drink with Llyod in the Gold Room. Why not kick-off our first episode with the movie that inspired this podcast?! Jasmine and Sarinah deep dive into the modern horror thriller, Fresh (2022). This film had us chewing on the concepts of dating apps, the weaponization of “soft boy” tactics, and reviewing how this movie goes against the grain of movie tropes that women face in horror films. Table for two please! We have a big appetite for Fresh!TW: This episode discusses cannibalism, violence against women, and gore. This is a public episode. Hey guys, Sarinah here - if you're anything like us and have been feeling the crippling weight of the current state of our planet on your shoulders, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.Everywhere you look there seems to be a new environmental disaster. Flooding in Libya, deadly wildfires in Canada and Maui – the list just never seems to end. And this relentless drumbeat of environmental crises can feel so overwhelming. It's not just the headlines; it's the images of polar bears stranded on melting ice, the choked skies of megacities, and once-lush rainforests reduced to stumps and ash. These emotions can be incredibly isolating, leaving us feeling like nothing is ever going to change or get better, making us just want to throw our hands in the air and give up. However, it's important to remember that these feelings are shared by countless others who, like us, are deeply concerned about our planet's future. As people who care about the environment, it's nearly impossible to tune out and look away, but today we wanted to talk about what that is actually doing to our mental health, and how we can better cope with our current climate reality. In this episode we share personal anecdotes of how it affects us, find solace in shared experiences and together seek ways to better cope and make a positive impact amidst the chaos. Hi everyone! Sarinah here! Coming to you live from my childhood bedroom visiting my mom following a beautiful trip down California along highway 395. This is my first ever Earth to Humans newsletter, so enjoy this maiden voyage as I try to re-connect with my early 2000's Wordpress days writing to the ether. My guest for this episode is an expert in natural resources management, a woman who's been on the front lines of one of the most crucial environmental issues facing us today. She's a problem-solver and policymaker, but above all, an advocate for our planet's most precious resource: water. Can Great Salt Lake survive us? Laura Briefer, the Director of Salt Lake City Public Utilities, has been working tirelessly to address the water crisis in Utah. She's been an integral figure in water policy for over two decades and has seen first-hand how the environment is shifting right in front of us. She is one of many stakeholders involved in preventing the disappearance of Great Salt Lake. A natural wonder that once stretched across nearly a quarter of the State of Utah (about 22,400 square miles), has been shrinking at an alarming rate. As of 2021, Great Salt Lake now spans a mere 950 square miles, revealing more of the lake bed with each major drought. Lake beds contain a variety of heavy metals in the sediment that, when lake levels recede, dry out and form toxic dust. These airborne dust particles not only affect human health, but also have devastating ecological implications. They can contaminate local ecosystems and have effects on air and water quality. Therefore, the issue of lake shrinkage is not only about the loss of water but also concerns the potential mobilization of hazardous substances that can impact both human health and the environment.Through Laura's eyes, we'll explore what's happening to the Great Salt Lake, why it matters, and most importantly, what is being done about it. Laura Briefer brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for sustainability to this issue. We're thrilled to have her this episode of the Earth to Humans Podcast. We love to hear your feedback, so have a listen and let us know what you think about the show!An update from meAs I mentioned, I'm Sarinah, one of the producers and hosts behind the show and I'm super excited to be building this community with all of you and connecting on a deeper level. I work in a variety of creative and environmental spaces, from nature videography, photography and artwork, to wildlife surveying and field captures.Lately though, I've been getting SUPER into block printing and linocutting. I started small, carving out tiny scenes into pink Pearl erasers, but am now moving onto larger rubber blocks so I can work in more detail. Something about the carving blade smoothly gliding over the stiffness of the rubber unlocked something in my brain launching me into a simultaneously soothing and instantly addicting new venture. Earlier this year I represented two films that I produced and directed at the 2023 Wild and Scenic Film Festival in Nevada City, CA, where I got to connect with some truly inspirational fellow filmmakers and re-ignite my passion for good storytelling. I also got to represent Earth to Humans in the March issue of Diversity in Action Magazine where I was interviewed about what makes our podcast so unique and how the show has evolved and grown alongside our growing decolonized mindset around conservation and the environment. After a long winter in the Sierra Nevada, I'm excited to finally get outside and go hiking and fishing and disappear into the woods for a while. I'm so grateful for Hannah and Matt and this amazing team and community that we've built together. Especially with the weight of all of the world's current issues, its so healing to be able to fight alongside these two as well as you, our listeners, and do what we can to enjoy this beautiful planet and try to make it a better place for all of its inhabitants. Let's keep fighting and do our part to make sure the Earth's voice is heard,Sarinah This is a public episode. Welcome back to Earth to Humans! On our first episode back for the season, Sarinah speaks with guest, Beth Pratt, Executive Director for California at the National Wildlife Federation and renowned conservationist who has worked tirelessly to protect and restore wildlife habitats across the state (which is huge by the way).In this episode, we'll be discussing Beth's unique relationship with a certain mountain lion known as P-22, who became a symbol of the coexistence between wildlife and humans in urban areas. P-22 captured the world's attention when he journeyed from the Santa Monica Mountains to Griffith Park, right in the heart of Los Angeles, where he settled down and made his home. His presence in the city provided a rare opportunity for people to connect with wild animals and inspired many to take action to protect the city's remaining wild spaces. We had Beth on the show back in 2017, but a lot has changed since then. For one, the famed 101 freeway wildlife crossing that was then just an idea still in need of final funding, now looms completed over the huge 10 lane freeway. Unfortunately since our last interview, P-22 was captured by wildlife officials in December 2022 due to concerns related to his health and a few days later, on December 17, 2022, was euthanized. Our conversation discusses the impact of his loss on the local community and the wider conservation movement as well as the challenges facing urban wildlife and the importance of preserving natural habitats in cities in order to support biodiversity and the survival of these precious predators. So, join us as we delve into the fascinating world of urban wildlife and learn more about the amazing journey of P-22, the people who have been touched by his impact, and the many urban species he has inadvertently saved due to his global impact.
Apa saja teorinya?

Mohon Maklum
Who do you look up to or learn from? For Thoughts That Count we talked pros and cons of Father's Day and all kinds of families/relationships, featuring an analysis of some problematic Kanye West lyrics about being a father and what that means to him. We were also joined by filmmaker, producer and actor Vonne Patiag, who works across stage, screen and performance to focus on issues exploring queer and ethnic intersection in Australia. Vonne has co-written a queer sitcom called Obviously! That opens as part of Sydney Fringe Festival next Thursday night, he’s also recently created a short documentary calledShading, examining current practices of ‘white-washing’ ethnic skin tones of performers in the film and theatre industries. Plus, we spoke to Sarinah Masukor and Jaya Keaney about The Watermelon Woman, a film that stars Cheryl Dunye as a movie-obsessed young queer woman working in a Philadelphia video store. She’s drawn to films from the 1930s which feature anonymous black women and decides to make a documentary about actress Fae Richards, known as ‘the Watermelon Woman’. Sarinah from Runway Australian Experimental Art has been working with Jaya Keaney to feature Jaya’s written response to the film, and Runway are hosting a screening happening at Golden Age Cinema and Bar on Wednesday September 12.

It’s been two years since we launched this podcast, and it’s amazing to me that we have already released close to 100 interviews. This show began as an experiment, but it has moved well beyond that to become a central hub of the internet for folks who are interested in conservation. We’ve interviewed biologists, researchers, filmmakers, activists, artists, politicians, musicians, authors, educators, chefs, entrepreneurs - all of whom are involved with conservation in some way. Today’s show is special - not just because we are celebrated 100 episodes - but because we are introducing two new contributors to the show! Sarinah Simons and Courtney Rae will be helping us expand the scope of Eyes on Conservation. No longer will you be hearing solely my voice here on the show, but the voices of Courtney and Sarinah, as well as EOC producer Sean Bogle. In today’s discussion we’ll be talking about the future direction of this show, and sharing our perspectives on the current state of the conservation movement.
Today, Sarinah Simons brings you interviews from the front lines of the 2019 Film Festival. After wandering the streets of Park City, Utah and seeing more films in five days than she would in an entire year, Sarinah interviews the filmmakers and creators behind some of her favorite films seen at the festival. This included the films Anthropocene: The Human Epoch co-directed by Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky and Nicholas de Pencier, Honeyland co-directed by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind directed by and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor. Learn what inspired the filmmakers and what motivates the meaning behind the art.
As the world of brand names and politicians offer their bandwagon platitudes for the summer of 2020 we’ve been thinking a lot about what that means for us. On the surface of it, conversations about wildlife, nature, conservation, climate change, mass extinction, and more – don’t often feel like there is a direct connection with racism, LGBTQ rights, gender equality, rampant runaway nationalism, classism, wealth inequality... And yet, the two worlds of our cultural values and the physical space and beings which inhabit it are completely intertwined. They are intersectional. They are undetachable. That is why we have made the decision to rebrand our podcast. We feel the name “Eyes on Conservation” no longer serves the purpose it once did. We feel that it doesn’t address those issues enough, and instead of simply throwing a #BLM stamp on our Instagram, patting ourselves on the back, and calling it a day, we’ve decided to make social equality and natural conservation - the natural allies that they are - central to our journey forward. And we want you to take the journey with us. We would like to hear from you what you think about this. What ideas you have for a new name, what concerns or questions you have. Please give us your feedback either through email at info@wildlensinc.org or by calling our voicemail at 208-917-3786. We will listen and read everything you send us and would love to share your answers on an upcoming episode.
