Dr. Jud Brewer (neuroscientist, NYT bestselling author, Director of Research and Innovation at Brown University's Mindfulness Center, executive medical director at Sharecare Inc.) brings so much wisdom to the Anxiety Lab. He shares his breakthrough approach to tackling anxiety using mindfulness. We talk about treating anxiety like a habit, a better way to change behavior than “I should,” mindful eating, having imaginary conversations with people in our heads, and not being able to stop worrying about something stupid even when we know it's something stupid. We also get pretty granular about planning anxiety. You can find Dr. Jud at drjud.com, on IG (dr.jud) and twitter (judbrewer), and his incredible book is called Unwinding Anxiety. Are you struggling with eating habits? Do you want to end the cycle of overeating or restricting and change your relationship with food? Eating with awareness and understanding your body's cues is the key. In this episode of “Your Life in Process” Diana and regular contributor, Dr. Judson Brewer, discuss resetting your eating habits to overcome challenging food patterns. About Dr. Judson BrewerJudson Brewer M.D. Ph.D. (“Dr. Jud”) is a New York Times best-selling author and thought leader in the field of habit change and the “science of self-mastery”, having combined over 20 years of experience with mindfulness training with his scientific research therein. Follow him on Twitter @drjudbrewer Key TakeawaysIf you want to find a way of eating that works for your unique needs, first begin to notice your own eating patterns in order to bring awareness to the associated behaviors, emotions, and physical body sensations. Our relationship with food is impacted by our judgments, rules about “good vs. bad” foods, our food-related values, and our societal body culture. Take a compassionate perspective with yourself around your eating habits. You struggle with your eating because you care about your health, body, and life. Anxiety, even saying the word makes me a bit anxious. But, what if there was a way to unwind it and come back to calm that was counterintuitively simple. Often anger can be triggered by getting something we don't want, having something we want taken away, or when we feel our values are threatened Evolutionarily, anger may be linked to maintaining our social status Anger can become a habit loop with a trigger, behavior, and result associated with it. The first step in changing your anger habit is to map out its loop. It is possible to take action against injustice without acting from anger, but acting from compassion and values For long-term change, focus on the bigger better offer of being compassionate Relevant Resources Mentionedhttps://drdianahill.com/extras/ (Download your Daily Process for Episode 3 Here) Read Dr. Jud's books: https://bookshop.org/books/the-craving-mind-from-cigarettes-to-smartphones-to-love-why-we-get-hooked-and-how-we-can-break-bad-habits/9780300234367 (The Craving Mind) and https://bookshop.org/books/unwinding-anxiety-new-science-shows-how-to-break-the-cycles-of-worry-and-fear-to-heal-your-mind/9780593330449 (Unwinding Anxiety) https://drjud.com/ (Learn more about Dr. Jud's Aps and programs) for eating, anxiety, and smoking Check out Dr. Jud on the http://www.fromstrivingtothriving.com/ (From Striving to Thriving Summit) with Diana https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnbeh.2014.00424/full (Research study Diana mentions about compassion meditators and anger ) Learn more about http://www.lightfully.com/ (Lightfully Behavioral Health) Thank you for listening to Your Life in Process! Abstinence from alcohol Abstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past. Benefits of “low-risk” drinking Following these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. This week on the podcast I'm talking with Dr. Jud Brewer. Dr. Jud Brewer is a New York Times best-selling author, neuroscientist, addiction psychiatrist, and thought leader in the field of habit change. He is the Director of Research and Innovation at Brown University's Mindfulness Center, where he also serves as an associate professor. He is the executive medical director at Sharecare Inc. and a research affiliate at MIT. Dr. Jud has developed and tested novel mindfulness programs for habit change, including treatments for smoking, emotional eating, and anxiety. We are talking all about his newest book: Unwinding Anxiety: New Science Shows How to Break the Cycles of Worry and Fear to Heal Your Mind. Dr. Jud's new approach to anxiety focuses on how anxiety itself becomes a habit. From his own personal experience in medical school as well as his history of treating patients, he came to realize that the same mindfulness techniques that he was successfully applying to smoking and emotinal eating could be applied to anxiety itself (something that was often at the root of the addictive behaviors.) Anxiety is a normal and necessary component of the human experience; however, under some circumstances normal psychological processes related to anxiety can unwittingly become entrenched in "habit loops" that can keep an individual stuck. New York Times best-selling author, neuroscientist, addiction psychiatrist, and thought leader in the field of habit change, Dr. Jud Brewer, joins us for a fascinating discussion of his novel model of anxiety as described in his new book "Unwinding Anxiety: New Science Shows How to Break the Cycles of Worry and Fear to Heal Your Mind”.
