A HSE Midwest consultant is warning of potentially fatal risk posed by measles. English health authorities have declared a national incident in light of high levels of transmission of the viral illness in some areas, while cases are also on the rise in parts of mainland Europe. Children under a year old, those with weak immune systems are most at risk of transmission and one in 10 Midwest children aren't up to date with their MMR vaccines. Consultant in Public Health Medicine at Public Health HSE Midwest Dr Breda Cosgrove says while the consequences can be grave, getting a vaccine is a surefire way to protect yourself.

The College of Public Health Medicine is adding its voice to the condemnation of the new government's controversial plans to repeal smokefree legislation to fund tax cuts. New Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has said his coalition government is committed to reducing tobacco-use through education and encouraging smokers to start vaping, but says the goal to achieve Smokefree 2025 is not workable. The president of the College Sir Collin Tukuitonga says smoking is the single biggest commercial risk factor for preventable disease and premature death in Aotearoa and is responsible for almost ten percent of all health loss. According to a new report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Ireland has the lowest immunisation rates for measles in Western Europe – warning of a threat of outbreaks due to vaccination gaps. Increased incidences of croup and chest infections are being seen in children as a result, with paediatric services at University Hospital Limerick reportedly managing higher attendances of infants with respiratory illnesses than ever before.
