S6 E4: Being Enough - Exploring Perfectionism w/Dr. Ellen HendriksenWhen will it ever be enough? When will I be enough? These are the questions people with perfectionistic tendencies ruminate over, oftentimes without definitive answers. Today we've got another necessary conversation for so many of us — we're talking with Dr. Ellen Hendriksen about her new book How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists, which came out January 7. It turns out, perhaps not surprisingly, that feeling a lack of enoughness is a widespread problem, and Ellen's book taught me so much about perfectionism — including that I apparently am one, even though I never would have thought that of myself. Perfectionism, as Ellen writes, can be used for good — it can help us have high standards, a strong work ethic, reliability, and a deep care of others — but it can also be used for ill, especially when it comes to our relationship with ourselves. Today on the show we explore the link between perfectionism and never feeling good enough; we talk about clinical perfectionism and where it stems from; how to stop putting our self-worth in the wrong places; seven shifts we can take to feel more enough; and so much more. Ellen has a Ph.D. from UCLA and completed her training at Harvard Medical School; she is a clinical psychologist at Boston University's Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders and, in addition to How to Be Enough, she also wrote How to Be Yourself: Quiet Your Inner Critic and Rise Above Social Anxiety. You might have seen her work everywhere from The New York Times to The Washington Post, BBC News, New York Magazine, Harvard Business Review, Psychology Today, Scientific American, The Guardian, Goop, O: The Oprah Magazine, and more, and she's here to help us stop being so hard on ourselves already.  How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists by Dr. Ellen Hendriksen

We will learn: The surprising difference between healthy high standards and destructive perfectionism How to recognize when your good intentions have become rigid rules that no longer serve you Why true connection comes from sharing our messy parts, not our perfect performance Have you ever caught yourself putting something off because you're waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect idea, or the perfect version of yourself to emerge? Maybe you don't consider yourself a perfectionist because your closet isn't color-coded or your life doesn't look Instagram-perfect. But what if perfectionism shows up in the way you hold yourself back? What's fascinating is that perfectionism isn't actually about being perfect – it's about never feeling good enough. And in our current culture of "hustle harder" and "live your best life," this feeling of inadequacy has found the perfect breeding ground. We're even trying to perfect the way we practice self-care or show up authentically – can you see the irony? Today our guest is Ellen Hendriksen, a clinical psychologist and author of "How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists." She brings a fresh perspective to the perfectionism conversation by showing us how our values can secretly transform into rigid rules, and how true growth comes not from perfect execution, but from authentic alignment with what matters most to us. Ellen Hendriksen, author of How to Be Enough, delves into the nuances of perfectionism, how it affects teens, and offers guidance on fostering self-acceptance while maintaining drive and ambition. If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Full Show NotesIn a world where teens are striving to excel in grades, sports, arts, and social standing, societal pressure and self-imposed standards can frequently lead to a feeling of inadequacy. Many teenagers, despite achieving great things, grapple with the invisible weight of not being "enough." As parents and mentors, it's crucial to comprehend this ongoing "silent epidemic" of perfectionism that threatens to undermine their self-worth.Our guest today, Dr. Ellen Hendriksen, provides an enlightening take on this pervasive issue. A reputable clinical psychologist and author, Ellen's latest book, How to Be Enough, explores the intricate dance between striving for excellence and recognizing innate worth. Whether you identify as a perfectionist or are raising one, this episode is rich with insights that illuminate the road to self-acceptance.Ellen explains how perfectionism, often seen as a quest for flawlessness, is actually a misdirected convincing that one is never truly enough. Yet, it's not all bad. She points out the positive side of conscientiousness—when drive turns into relentless self-criticism, though, that's when perfectionism becomes unhealthy. In our conversation, we gauge how to identify when this line is crossed. The Perfectionism PendulumPerfectionism doesn't just show up; it has roots, be it familial, societal, or personal predispositions. The discussion digs into patterns in family dynamics, such as anxious rearing and contingent love that may unknowingly perpetuate high-stakes environments for teens. Ellen unpacks how these environments can entrench the belief that self-worth is earned, not given. For parents of adolescents, recognizing how perfectionism manifests during these formative years can offer insights into what it means to provide unconditional love—emphasizing love independent of achievement.Supporting Exploration Over PerfectionEllen reminds us that adolescence is a time of exploration. Teens can feel trapped in a cycle of sticking only to what they excel at, driven by external praise and a need for validation. This episode emphasizes the importance of supporting your child in breaking free from this mold, encouraging them to try new things without fear of judgment, and valuing the process over the outcome.Using Values to Overcome CriticismShifting focus from labels to values can be a solid strategy for overcoming self-critical thoughts and preserving self-worth. Instead of defining oneself by arbitrary or external standards, teens and adults alike can cultivate a life driven by values. A focus on personal growth and learning rather than fulfilling rigid expectations can pave the way for a healthier mindset.Fostering Warmth and RelationshipsFinally, the episode underscores the significance of warmth and connection over sheer competence. Ellen advises that fostering sincere relationships requires emphasizing kindness and intention over an endless pursuit of correctness, often the hiding place of perfectionism. This principle resounds through both family interactions and broader social connections, fostering a healthier community atmosphere for teens. In the Episode...My discussion with Ellen Hendriksen was as insightful as it was reassuring. Among the fascinating concepts explored in this episode, we also cover:The difference between healthy and unhealthy perfectionismHow gender roles play into adolescent perfectionismStrategies to shift from rigid to flexible thinkingSpecific steps parents can take to support self-acceptance in teensTo delve deeper into these life-changing insights and more, check out How to be Enough and visit Ellen's website at ellenhendriksen.com. You're an overachiever. Maybe you're often referred to as a badass. Everyone's in awe of how much you get done, and how in control of life you seem to be – and admittedly, that admiration feels good. In fact, you live for it. What almost nobody knows is that you're fizzling with anxiety, up at night ruminating on things, quick to anger, and you struggle to relax. We're discussing High Functioning Anxiety (HFA). It's not an officially recognized diagnosis, because the person continues to function – quite well, in fact. That doesn't mean the struggles with anxious thoughts and feelings aren't real, or even debilitating. My guest is adventurer and coach, Charlotte Fowles, who is no stranger to overachieving and busy-ness addiction. Charlotte experienced a decade of trauma, including divorce, depression and cancer, which meant she had to change her overachieving ways. She now helps executives and leaders to manage their own inner challenges, including HFA. Sidebar: We also debunk the concept of badassery as looking like you've got everything together. So fun! SHOW NOTES:  On this show…we are dropping the negativity, the fear, and the anger as we adopt a kinder approach to ourselves and others. We are seeking the good, the possible, and even the impossible as we initiate a radical mood makeover. Tired of feeling frustrated, irritated, and helpless? Most of us are. Yet day after day we visit and revisit these feelings, staying stuck without a real plan forward. Unlike Cinderella, there is no Fairy Godmother standing ready to transform our lives or our attitudes with a wave of her wand. We have to dry our eyes, calm our nerves, and cool our jets to see what we're actually working with. You can't strive for better if you aren't sure where you're falling short. And wallowing in our melancholy mood is getting us nowhere. So, let's start there. What are your mind and body telling you and where might you be missing the message?  Your body might be saying, “Hey you, I'm tired and I need a little more rest to perform at the level at which you are pushing our life's pace.” But outside influences say - there is plenty of time to rest when you're dead. Your mind might be saying, “Ouch, I'm getting bogged down with all this conflicting information and super anxious bu the tone!” But outside influences tell you - you HAVE to stay informed or you can't get involved. It's up to you to fix it!  As a result of this constant struggle, you feel behind and anxious about catching up. Wonder where your bad mood comes from? I'm not sure but it sounds like we're on the right track. And if you don't know, should you look for the answers? Let me remind you, no one is going to do it for you. There isn't a happy clown to visit when you feel blue or a water boy to ice you down when you're angry, and if there was a warm hug at ready when you're having a bad day - I would know about it! Did I mention the journey to self-discovery is essentially a solo mission? Oh sure, you have plenty of help along the way but it takes your foot on the gas to continue forward.  So I want to know more about these moods, where they come from, and what can I do to get to the source of the irritant, overcome it, and get back on my journey. It's hard to expect peak performance when you have sludge in your engine, right? Mamta Sharma gets us started with an Instant Mood Makeover – How to Change Mental State in Under 5 Minutes The Better Health Channel gives us more ideas on Monitoring your mood.
