About:Energy, a world-leading innovator in battery development software, announces the expansion of its student racing initiative, 'Drive to Recharge', a program that aims to educate the next generation of battery engineers, address the Global battery skills gap and support the development of 3,000 battery engineers by 2030. Since its launch in December 2023, 'Formula Student: Drive to Recharge' has rapidly grown, Formula Student is one of Europe's most established educational engineering competitions organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (iMechE). Teams worldwide design, build, test, and race small-scale formula-style racing cars, powered by petrol engines or electric motors. With advancements in electric vehicle technology, many teams are now switching to fully electric. Drive to Recharge Student Racing Programme About:Energy has since expanded this programme to include 18 teams from eight countries. In addition to Formula Student UK, the expanded program now includes sponsorships of teams competing in several other events, such as, Formula Student in Germany, FS Alpe Adria, Formula Bharat in India, MotoStudent in Spain, the Shell Eco Marathon, and the Electric Solar Vehicle Championship in India. The sponsorship provides each team with a battery cell model of their choice, cutting-edge simulation tools, and educational resources to design a battery pack for a small-scale motorsports application. By offering access to cell models, student racing teams gain deeper insights into cell behaviour, enabling them to make well-justified design decisions to stretch the performance limits and increase the key battery pack performance metrics, such as pack energy density and power density while maintaining safety. The tools provided by About:Energy empower university students to enhance their battery pack designs using the same advanced modelling tools employed by the world's largest companies. This programme aims to support existing government policy on training development focussed on the battery industry. This announcement builds on the excitement of the Formula Student competition at Silverstone which happened July 20-21, About:Energy sponsored 9 teams that showcased their innovations and competed against some of the best engineering talent globally. About:Energy has a close history with Formula Student with several of its employees previously participating in the programme including Gavin White, CEO of About:Energy, who was Team Leader of Queen's Formula Student team which placed as the ninth best UK team in 2018. Gavin White, CEO of About:Energy said: "Student racing competitions embody the 'learning-by-doing' approach, which is crucial in addressing the shortage of skilled battery engineers in our industry. Our goal is to accelerate electrification by creating a seamless modelling experience that leads to faster and more cost-effective battery development. By equipping the next generation of engineers with these tools, we educate them on battery modelling capabilities, preparing them for future careers in the industry." The benefits of the program include enabling student teams to design faster, more efficient cars that are expected to place higher in both the design competition and the dynamic racing competition events. Additionally, students' employability is enhanced as they gain experience with industry-leading modelling tools and a deeper understanding of battery systems and simulation tools. Michal Grzyb Team Leader, Light Electric Motorcycle (LEM), Wroclaw said: "About:Enegry's cell model helps us in designing new batteries and optimizing them both electrically and thermally, a task that has previously been very difficult, and sometimes even impossible when relying on physical experiments." These student teams operate on limited budgets and tight schedules, making physical testing costly and time-consuming. About:Energy battery pack models enable virtual testing and rapid design iteration. Simulations ca...

In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents. His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race hand in hand.Get a copy of Tony's book hereFollow Tony on FacebookFollow Tony on IGFollow Tony on TwitterFind Tony on Linkedin

I first met Pete Armstrong as he was pitching at the Ecosummit event in Berlin in 2018 and last year. The scale of the impact possible in transforming our heating and water storage systems in our homes blew my mind. I’ve always been so involved in the ‘electrification of everything’, so I’ve watched since with interest. Mixergy were also mentioned in a recent podcast episode with Robert Trezona of IP Group, one of their early (and follow on) investors. So I thought I’d invite Dr Pete Armstrong to join us. About our guest Dr Pete Armstrong is CEO and co-founder of Mixergy, an Oxford University spin-out company which has brought to market a unique hot water tank. Pete completed his PhD on intelligent hot water tanks at Oxford Uni with fellow student and co-founder Ren Kang, before going on to win a Technical Innovation award within the 2013 Shell Eco-Marathon electric car competition, and a prize in a Climate KiC venture competition, which was the genesis of Mixergy in 2014. Mixergy has since received investment from IP Group, Oxford Science Innovation, Centrica Innovations and Foresight Williams to grow and develop the business. About Mixergy Mixergy has developed an intelligent hot water tank, which is unlike others on the market. The Mixergy tank operates on an integrated Internet of Things platform and is designed to selectively heat smaller portions of water. As a fleet, Mixergy aims to offer a Demand Side Response (DSR) service to the National Grid, absorbing excess power load and time shifting demand to help balance the grid. This “Internet of Tanks” vision will help to facilitate the generation and utilisation of more renewables nationwide to support a greener future. The Mixergy tank is also a benefit to consumers, saving up to 40% on hot water bills through sophisticated machine learning.
Into the STEM program at Wheat Ridge High School. An exciting and refreshing look at how just one high school STEM program is making a difference that could one day engage students to join the automotive industry. The Wheat Ridge High School STEM program along with their University of Colorado Denver partner will be building two hydrogen fuel cell cars for the 2017-18 school year. One will once again be a Prototype vehicle along with an urban concept vehicle. They will both be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The competition, held annually in the Americas, Asia and Europe, provides a real-world environment for students to test vehicles they design and build themselves; with the goal of going the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. The Shell Eco-Marathon inspires young scientists and engineers to think about energy efficiency and offers them a platform to work on energy solutions in a practical manner. Wheat Ridge High School STEM is once again working towards having a Rover ready to compete in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge in 2018! The competition will be held in Huntsville, Alabama on April 13th and 14th. They have submitted a model of a NASA Human Powered Rover that folds into a 5’ x 5’ x 5’ space. Drivers must prepare for the physical demands of the race. Peddle Power. They took second place in the NASA high school competition in 2017. Talking points: Wheat Ridge High was contacted by the University of Colorado-Denver to build a joint program. The challenge was to see if a college level senior design class would work at the high school if they had help from an instructor and support from the college. Permission was granted from the school Principal to put STEM on steroids. STEM: Science | Technology | Engineering | Math They started with 16 students and currently there are 80 students in the program. Eight students were at AAPEX for their presentation at ASA-CARS. They compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon against other colleges. Keep in mind this is high school STEM. Competition is for fuel efficiency. In 25 minutes you need to complete a 6-mile course. The team has won twice in the last three years. Carbon fiber is used for the body. They have many divisions and special work teams that work on the project. Design Driver Machining and metal working Body, Gear, Electrical and Steering Marketing to learn the business side They get funds to make the project viable. $30K to $50K a year Arduino Media Department All public facing on YouTube and Facebook 2017-2018 the vehicle is an urban concept car You must go through phases to qualify for the Shell Eco Challenge You get specs from Shell. This must be a street legal car. After school and Saturdays are needed to get the project completed.
