Job openings post a sharp decline The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, also known as the JOLTs report, showed job openings of 7.6 million in the month of December. This was below the estimate of 8 million and the reading of 8.09 million in the month of November. While this may sound disappointing, this still leaves the ratio of open jobs to available workers at 1.1 to 1. A softening labor market is still not a bad thing considering it is coming from such a strong spot where workers have had an immense amount of power over employers for a couple of years. The Fed wants to make sure the labor market isn't too strong as it could cause inflationary concerns, so I actually see this as a positive considering it is still a good report, but not too strong. I still believe the labor market could soften further without it being problematic for the economy.   Jobs growth still looks positive Although the nonfarm payrolls growth of 143,000 in the month of January missed the expectation of 169,000, I still see the number as healthy for a growing economy. This number also came after upward revisions of 100,000 for December and November. The January number was slightly off the average of 166,000 in 2024, but I would expect to see a lower total in 2025 given the fact that the unemployment rate is extremely healthy at 4%. I was surprised to see wage growth accelerate to 4.1% in the month, which was higher than last month's reading of 3.9% and was at the highest level since May 2024 when it also registered 4.1%. At this level I wouldn't say wage inflation is problematic, but I would say it is worth watching. If it reaccelerated to a higher level that could pose problems for the battle over inflation. I would say overall the job report looked healthy with no major surprises and for the most part it would point to a labor market that is continuing to soften, which I believe is good for our economy as a whole.   Redemptions are high for climate mutual funds Climate mutual funds, sometimes called green funds, grew quite rapidly from 2019 through the beginning of 2024. Apparently, investors began realizing that the equity concentration in these mutual funds really hurt their returns in 2024. Redemptions of $30 billion means investors wanted to leave these climate sensitive mutual funds to invest elsewhere. It is estimated worldwide that climate focused mutual funds are approximately $534 billion. Redemptions of $30 billion is a pretty big hit considering that equates to around 5 to 6% of fund assets. Based on how times are changing, I believe going forward investors should not expect their returns to keep pace with the overall market. Another problem for investors is when redemptions in these funds are high, the fund manager must sell off assets to raise cash, perhaps at lower prices which can really hurt the performance of the fund going forward. This is because the stocks have been sold out of the portfolio to raise cash and if the stocks rebound, the fund performance will lag because of the missing equities that had to be sold. On the other side, if they sell positions with a gain, this will create tax consequences for investors.    Behind the curtain of private equity Private equity over the last few years has become the cool thing in investing. Investors have been trying to get into private equity as an alternative asset, which I personally do not believe in because of the behind the curtain details no one knows what's going on. Over the last 10 years, private equity assets have increase 300% to around $4 trillion. What's even more amazing is that the fees collected by these private equity firms has increased 600%! A trade group by the name Institutional Limited Partners Association has had enough. They are pushing for new guidelines to standardize financial reporting for private equity investors including public pension plans, university endowments, and charitable foundations. What I thought was crazy is that private equity firms will vary how much they disclose to their clients based on how much they invest. The small investors will get less information than the bigger investors. In my opinion, it is not a wise place to put your money as I like to know what is going on with my investments. There are ways that the private equity firms are enhancing returns by using certain types of financial engineering as opposed to the old way of selling the companies they buy and returning cash to the investors. The most revealing thing I could find was the median fee that the small investors pay is somewhere around 2%. I have said many times in the past if your broker is trying to sell you or put you into the hot private equity market, I recommend saying no thank you and find another broker.   Are 401(k) Loans a Good Idea? Taking a 401(k) loan may seem like an attractive option for quick access to cash, but it often comes with significant financial drawbacks that make it a bad idea. When you borrow from your 401(k), you are essentially taking money out of your retirement savings, which means losing potential investment growth and compounding returns that are crucial for long-term wealth accumulation. Although you repay yourself with interest, the interest rate is usually lower than what your investments could have earned if left untouched. Additionally, 401(k) loans must be repaid within a set timeframe, and if you leave your job, either voluntarily or involuntarily, the outstanding balance becomes due. Failure to repay results in it being treated as a distribution, triggering income taxes and, if you are under 59½, an additional 10% early withdrawal penalty, plus a 2.5% penalty in California. This can lead to a significant tax burden and further reduce your retirement savings. Moreover, and this is the biggest drawback in my opinion, when you repay the loan with interest, even though you are paying that interest to yourself, you are paying that interest with after-tax dollars which means you are being taxed twice.   First you have to earn that money and pay taxes on it in order to pay the interest, and you are taxed again when you withdraw that money in retirement. Many people also fall into the trap of taking multiple loans, which can create a cycle of dependency and derail long-term financial security. While a 401(k) loan might seem like a convenient way to borrow, the risks of lost investment growth, tax consequences, and potential repayment difficulties make it an unwise financial move in most situations.   Companies Discussed: Fox Corporation (FOXA), PVH Corp. (PVH), Dollar General Corporation (DG), United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS)

California joins the union and messages need to be delivered. UPS had a solution and decided it needed to be luxury and efficient. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders podcast. Teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop, to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So, here's one of those. [Colair Cooling & Heating] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders podcast. Dave Young here with Stephen Semple. And we're talking about empires and how they were built. Get it? That's the name of the pod... that's what we do here. Stephen Semple: I've never put that together before. Dave Young: Wow, I see. Aren't you glad I'm here? Stephen Semple: I'm so glad. Dave Young: You whispered the three letters, UPS, into my ears just as the countdown started. And I'm trying to think of a UPS story, and mostly what I think of when I think of UPS, think back years ago, I sort of remember, I think their start but I remember that being a UPS driver was a way better job back then than it is today. But that's probably not a big part of this story. So let's talk about how they started. Stephen Semple: Pretty sure it was UPS recently that actually just put through a new pay package and benefits, and things along that lines. That really ramped up what people are being paid at UPS, if I remember correctly. But you're right, this is not a big part. It's not a big part of the story. Dave Young: I think it started... how long have they been around, Stephen? Stephen Semple: They were founded on August 28th, 1907. Dave Young: I feel like probably I lived in a town so small that we didn't have one until maybe the sixties or seventies. They just didn't show up. Stephen Semple: Well, and this is an interesting part. There was a big challenge to them becoming nationwide. They were founded in August 1907 by James Casey and Claude Ryan in Seattle. I didn't realize that they had started in Seattle. Dave Young: Oh, okay. Stephen Semple: And they actually first started as their original name was the American Message Company. And today of course is known as UPS, United Parcel Service. They do like 90 billion in sales and have over 500,000 employees. Just what a monster they have become in this space. But basically they started around the time California joins the union. And you know what ends up happening now, I know Seattle's not and before people go nuts, I know Seattle's not in California, but I was just trying to, you know, Historic landmark. Dave Young: It's the West Coast, yeah. Stephen Semple: Exactly. But I get it, before people know- Dave Young: Didn't all join at once. Yeah. Stephen Semple: ... So, California joins the union. There's this growth happening. In the west, there's this need to transport items and it's hard getting things to the new territories. And lots of delivery services pop up. Wells Fargo pops up for the transportation of money. The Pony Express is created for transporting of mail. Now, of course, the Pony Express only lasts 18 months because the telegraph wipes them out. Right? Dave Young: Right. Stephen Semple: But here's the interesting thing, with the telegraph, you still need a messenger service to run the last leg. To take it from the telegraph station to the person. So, Jim Casey's, 19 years old, he's in Seattle and he sets up this business for basically running the telegraphs. That's how they start. Dave Young: Okay. They're the last mile guy. Stephen Semple: That's the reason why they're the American message service. They start off as being the last mile guy.

Tribolet said that while there were many issues with the store, the “last straw” was seeing Dollar General throw an exorbitant amount of items in the trash despite touting that it donates items to the local community. “We're throwing away coffee that's not expired but it's close. Or you're throwing out a box of Lucky Charms that you know there's a whole world of kids who would love to eat those. But you can't donate them out, because you're supposed to throw them away,” Tribolet told Spectrum. “There have been tears that have been shed.” Dollar General argued in a statement to Spectrum that it does work with Feeding America, but the organization has specific guidelines about what can be donated. Feeding America's corporate donation guidelines explicitly state that “food approaching expiration” is welcome. Its website also lists canned goods as great donations, which Tribolet claims get thrown away at Dollar General, according to Spectrum. “It's sickening, and it's saddening, especially for someone that has morals,” Tribolet told the outlet. “If you've ever been at the bottom and never had anything, you know what it feels like to see items get thrown away. That could have gone to somebody that needed them.” What's the best way for workers to respond if you feel your employer is mistreating you? Julie Bauke (rhymes with NOW-kee) can offer advice. On this day in history, July 24th, 1929, the Kellogg-Briand Pact took effect. It was ambitious, as pacts go, because get this – it was an international agreement outlawing war as an implement of foreign policy. In addition to everything else, in typical Nazi fashion, the Third Reich just brazenly ignored the agreement. The Kellogg-Briand Pact, also known as the Pact of Paris, was an international agreement for peace first established in 1928. The formal name for the pact was the General Treaty for Renunciation of War as an Instrument of National Policy, which committed signatory states to refrain from using war as a means to resolve disputes or conflicts of any origin. Initially signed in the wake of World War I by the United States, France, and Germany, it was later adopted by many other states. The pact was crafted outside the auspices of the League of Nations and was spearheaded by U.S. Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg and French foreign minister Aristide Briand. However, the pact's effectiveness and overall impact have been widely debated. Critics point out its inability to prevent a little thing called World War II and the lack of a mechanism for enforcement. Despite its ambitious goals, it was often seen as irrelevant and ineffective, criticized for its legalistic and moralistic tone and its limited influence on foreign policy.Nevertheless, the Kellogg-Briand Pact wasn't entirely without success or influence. After the Second World War, it provided the legal basis for the concept of a “crime against peace,” which was used in the trials and executions of top Nazi leaders at the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals. Additionally, it paved the way for similar provisions in the Charter of the United Nations and other treaties, contributing to a more proactive American foreign policy. It also arguably contributed to a significant decrease in declared wars post-1945.Snark aside, the agreement broke new ground. The idea that a multilateral treaty could even attempt to outlaw wars of conquest and, in so doing, render violators pariah states even if war itself couldn't be forcibly stopped, was a relatively novel concept in the wake of the 19th century's widespread empire-building. That general idea remains the basis for things like the United Nations and NATO, so good on you Kellogg and Briand. The Kellogg-Briand Pact, 1928Starting from August 1, 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will permanently allow employers to verify employment eligibility remotely, as per new regulations. The move comes just before the expiry of temporary COVID-19 era flexibility for employment verification on August 30. The option is exclusively for employers in good standing with the federal E-Verify system. According to the rule, employers must inspect copies of I-9 documents within three days of an employee's start date, verify authenticity via live video, and acknowledge remote verification on the I-9 form. The rule will not be retroactive and will only apply to new hires post-August 1. In conjunction, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will release an updated Form I-9 for use from August 1, designed for compatibility with mobile devices. Representatives from the Society for Human Resource Management and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have hailed this decision as beneficial for the modern workforce and a facilitator for efficient onboarding.Remote Work Verification Allowed for New Hires Per DHS Rule (2)Attorneys for Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange, have denied allegations of witness tampering by prosecutors. The lawyers have agreed to a gag order, despite rejecting claims that Bankman-Fried's interactions with a New York Times reporter constituted witness tampering. These events followed prosecutors' attempts to restrict Bankman-Fried and his allies from making public statements that could potentially impact the case. Previously, FTX, which was valued at $32 billion, filed for bankruptcy after failing to repay depositors, and Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to fraud. Bankman-Fried's lawyer, Mark Cohen, confirmed that his client had shared personal documents with the New York Times, including writings by former colleague Caroline Ellison, who is cooperating with the U.S. government–let's call her a witness for simplicity's sake. The New York Times published an article featuring excerpts from Ellison's personal documents provided to the paper by SBF, including correspondence in which she expressed frustration with the job and over her breakup with SBF. Ellison has pleaded guilty to defrauding investors and is cooperating with prosecutors. SBF continues to deny wrongdoing.FTX's Bankman-Fried denies witness tampering, accepts gag orderUnited Parcel Service (UPS) is set to resume labor negotiations tomorrow with the Teamsters union, which represents 340,000 UPS employees, in a bid to avoid a strike that could disrupt supply chains and negatively impact the economy. Since April, discussions have been ongoing concerning a contract for UPS's U.S. drivers, package handlers, and loaders, as their current five-year agreement is set to expire on July 31. UPS stressed the urgency of reaching a fair deal that ensures certainty for customers, employees, and businesses nationwide. The Teamsters union is pushing for a five-year contract that enhances pay and full-time jobs, and strengthens protections for workers. While preliminary agreements have been reached on removing a two-tier pay system for delivery drivers and installing air conditioning in delivery vehicles, disputes over pay raises for part-time workers remain unresolved. The talks stalled on July 5, with both parties attributing the deadlock to the other.Just as a quick fun fact, UPS' gross profit for the quarter ending March 31, 2023 was $17.3 billion. Its gross profit for the twelve months ending March 31 was $73 billion.United Parcel Service, Teamsters union to resume labor talks on Tuesday | ReutersNew Jersey is suing the Biden administration in an attempt to halt New York City's plan to impose tolls on vehicles in Manhattan. The plan, intended to reduce congestion and fund mass transit, could see a daily toll of up to $23 charged on vehicles in central Manhattan as early as next year. New Jersey claims in its lawsuit that the federal highway administration's environmental review of the plan was insufficient and overlooked the financial and environmental burdens imposed on New Jersey residents. The state is concerned that the tolls would lead drivers to reroute through New Jersey to avoid the charges, causing environmental, financial, and human impacts. It also points out that New Jersey would not receive money from New Yorkers entering its state. New York City, which holds the record for the most congested traffic in the U.S., estimated in 2022 that the charge would reduce traffic, improve air quality, increase transit use, and generate between $1 billion to $1.5 billion annually, supporting $15 billion in debt financing for mass transit improvement.New Jersey sues to block New York traffic congestion plan | ReutersOmegle.com LLC is aiming for a pre-trial victory in a lawsuit that accuses the anonymous video-chatting platform of enabling a predator in Canada to exploit a minor he encountered on the site. In a motion for summary judgment, Omegle has argued that it did not knowingly assist in the abuse and parts of the suit are time-barred by a statute of limitations. The lawsuit, lodged in 2021, alleges that Omegle is defectively designed due to its failure to prevent child access and ban identified predatory users, thereby indirectly engaging in sex trafficking. Omegle contends that as the plaintiff resides in Michigan, local product liability law, which has a three-year statute of limitations, should apply. It further argues that the sex trafficking claims are inapplicable due to the lack of proof that Omegle was directly involved in a commercial sex trafficking venture. This follows Omegle's unsuccessful attempt to dismiss the lawsuit under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The plaintiff's legal strategy is novel, as it has involved framing the case around product liability to bypass this legislation's protective measures. In other words, they're aiming to treat the site itself as a faulty product – like a toaster that doesn't function properly … if that toaster also enabled child predators to contact victims and the toaster manufacturer didn't do anything to curtail that use. Omegle.com Seeks Summary Judgment in Sex Trafficking LawsuitMaxMin - Section 230 - by Andrew Leahey

Hard Money Lender through the Lens of a Flipper   Listen in as Kelli Garrett shares all the moving parts of her Hard Money Lending program, Rehab Wallet.  Kelli goes into detail on what a hard money lender is looking for in an investor.  She also bases a large portion of her success on a habit she does every day, paving the way toward a Clear Vision.   Kelli Garrett began her professional career the day after graduating college with an entry level position at United Parcel Service.  She quickly moved up the ranks of the company, and within two years, was promoted to operations manager where she was in charge of an entire UPS center with over 200 employees.  With a knack for turning under-performing centers into highly-effective ones, Kelli was transferred to multiple facilities over her career at UPS.  Eventually, she was transferred to New Jersey and promoted to Division Manager where she was over multiple centers and 1000+ employees.  In the year 2000, with a longing to return back to South Carolina and a dream to become an entrepreneur, Kelli left UPS after 12 years of service.   Since leaving corporate America, Kelli has owned and operated multiple successful businesses including a mortgage company, a house flipping business, a candy manufacturing company, an appraisal company, multiple convenience stores, a restaurant, a landscaping business, a courier company and many others.   Kelli believes strongly in the notion of not having all of her eggs in one basket and therefore regards multiple streams of income as a must-have.  Her current businesses include a residential and commercial real estate rental portfolio and a hard money lending business called Rehab Wallet.  She also invests passively with multiple private equity firms and real estate syndications that have proven track records and strong operators. Kelli's work ethic, dedication to treating people fairly and her ability to recruit great talent has proven to bring much success to all of her business ventures over the past 30+ years.   Kelli is also a 4 time All-American women's college basketball player.  She is in the Hall of Fame at Easley High School as well as at The College of Charleston where her #14 jersey hangs in the rafters of the arena as women's basketball all-time leading scorer.    Kelli always has been and always will be “ALL ABOUT THE HUSTLE” and nobody does it better!   Social Media Links: Facebook Kelli Garrett/ @kelli.garrett2 INSTA/ LinkedIn Kelli Garrett  Website: GarrettVenturesGroup.com     To learn more about Jen Josey, visit www.TheRealJenJosey.com To join REIGN, visit www.REIGNmastermind.com

Market Increase The Fed continued to spook markets yesterday with the outlook for monetary policy. The 0.75% rate hike to a range of 3% - 3.25% came as no surprise, but the concern came when the outlook for rate hikes going forward was released. The current estimate is a terminal rate or an endpoint of 4.6% next year. Six of the 19 “dots” were in favor of taking rates to a 4.75%-5% range next year, but the central tendency was to 4.6%, which would put rates in the 4.5%-4.75% area. The current expectation is that the Fed will raise rates by at least 1.25% in its two remaining meetings this year and then potentially another 0.25% next year. I do believe at this rate the Fed has gone too far. They completely missed the mark last year and now are completely missing the mark on the other end. If you look at the first photo it is the dot plot from the meeting last September. You will notice not a single member had the Fed Funds Rate toping the 0.75% - 1.0% range and a majority believed the rate would fall between 0% and 0.5%. The second picture is the current dot plot which as you can see is drastically different. I wouldn't give much confidence in the current dot plot given how far off the Fed was at their meeting last September Streaming Services Streaming services are now in a big hurry to add advertisements to their content to help reduce costs for subscribers. In addition to providers like Netflix, Paramount, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery they will also be competing with Facebook and Google. Supply and demand being what it is, there's a possibility that the high available ad space will decrease the prices for advertising, especially with the slowdown in the economy. Also, don't forget the traditional advertisements on TV and radio. There's a term they are using in advertising called Cost Per Mille (CPM). Mille is Latin for thousand and it measures the price of 1,000 advertisement impressions. It is estimated that the CPMs will come in somewhere around $20-$30. HBO Max currently is topping that range over $40. For Netflix, depending on the analyst, estimates range from $20 to $50 CPM‘s. If Netflix does not get the higher price their stock could fall by another 40 to 50% from current levels. It was also revealed that studios that have a lot of content such as Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery used to charge very low levels for content and have now been hoarding it for their own streaming platforms. This means other content providers like Netflix and Amazon will have to spend billions of dollars to create new content which may or may not attract viewers.   Real Estate Being a value investor as I am, it means you only invest when what you're buying is on sale. For the past couple years, we have been talking about growth stocks and real estate being well overpriced. Here is a comparison for you that backs that up. During the two-year timeframe of covid stimulus, household net worth ballooned by $39 trillion or 158% relative to the US GDP. The housing bubble of roughly 15 years ago saw household net worth increase by 98% of GDP during its two hottest years and the big dot com boom that eventually crashed saw an increase of 79% in household net worth compared with the United States GDP. Be careful where you invest or what you buy as those two other historical events ended poorly for many investors.   December 2022 I have been guiding my clients that come December 31 of 2022 they'll be very pleased with the way their portfolio looks. Much of that is based on what is in the portfolio, but there are other factors that I see as positive that I will share with you. Currently funds' relative exposure to the stock market is lower than 90% of historical readings, which means we should see more money come into the market before year end. Also, with the new tax law on stock buybacks I believe many corporations will dramatically increase their stock buybacks before December 31st rather than paying taxes in 2023. Lastly, I have continued to see improvement in commodities such as wheat, corn and soybeans with the prices being down in some areas more than 30%. I've also heard talk that meat supplies appear to be improving as well. This could help produce lower inflation numbers and that could lead to the Fed slowing down their interest rate hikes. I should also mention that this was the worst first half in over 50 years and it would not be surprising to see a bounce in the last quarter on the right equities.   Population Many times when we post about the employment situation, we get comments about why so many jobs and why they're not being filled. First, we have never had this many open jobs going back to 2010 there were about 2 1/2 million open jobs compared to the 11 million now. It has been rising steadily. Second, our population is getting older and as that happens more people are retiring. In 1999 the percent of retirees of the population was around 15.75%. Today that has risen to nearly 20% and is expected to rise more as years pass. Third, we need to increase the legal immigration which has fallen off dramatically over the last 10 years, part of that was due to Covid. 10 years ago, legal immigration was around 800,000 a year and now has dropped to just over 200,000 a year. It is very difficult to include or count the illegal immigration. The difference with legal immigration is it also brings in what is known as STEM professionals. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Immigrant students receive about half of all master's degrees in the STEM fields and about 44% of doctorates. The United States needs to substantially increase its legal immigration because of our low birth rate, if we do not, we will be experiencing a lower quality of living in the US in 15 to 20 years.   Investing Some continue to say that we are wrong about Bitcoin continuing to drop dramatically in price. We also doubted the idea of companies like Beyond Meat and were told we didn't get it because many people are going to switch over to this new form of protein and we should be buying the company that trades under the symbol BYND. Back in July 2019 the stock had a high of $196/share and dropped to about $66/share 14 months later. Then January 2021 it came back to $178/share with people rejoicing. Now, in September 2022 you can pick the stock up for around $16.50/share and the company still has no earnings and in fact has lost $4/share over the last 12 months. Be careful of hype in the market, it will destroy your portfolio returns over the long term.   Home Sales Existing home sales came in at 4.8 million on an annual basis. That's the seventh monthly decline in a row and outside of Covid the slowest pace since November 2015. Compared to last August, sales were 19.9% lower. I don't see that trend turning around anytime soon with a slowing economy and rising interest rates. Prices did drop from the prior month which I think is the trend that we will be seeing going forward.   Rising Interest Rates With rising interest rates and a slowing economy this is when investors really need to work hard at understanding a company's balance sheet. Two important areas you want to make sure the company is strong in are liquidity, which comes from good quick and current ratios, and the upcoming debt maturities. For this you want to check the long-term debt to equity to make sure that number is similar to the total debt to equity. If not, this could be a warning sign that the company has a lot of short-term debt which means they would need to renew at higher interest rates going forward causing an increase in interest expense and reducing earnings.   Investing There are only a few months left in 2022 and we are beginning to look at where to invest in 2023. Unions have really come on strong this year and I expect that will continue with the current administration. There are some big contracts coming up next year with the Teamsters. United Parcel Service will see their contract end on July 31, 2023, and I expect the union will ask for big increases based on inflation. Also, some big car makers have contracts coming up with the UAW and I don't believe it will go well. I think we could see strikes against Ford Motor company, General Motors and Chrysler whose parent company is Stellantis. I'm sure the union will play the game of how much money the car makers have made and not take into account that going forward with the slowing economy sales will slow as well, which feeds into lower profits. Increases in price Over the last year, we have seen prices at the pump increase for our cars and now that winter is approaching, you'll also see the cost to heat your home go up as well. Across the country the cost is expected to increase by 17.2% for an average cost of $1202 to heat your home.

Charles Jolley, CEO of URB-E, want to disrupt the local delivery infrastructure. URB-E is building a local container delivery network using ebikes and collapsible containers that are pedaled around cities and neighborhoods. The company says a single delivery person can pull up to 800 pounds of stuff, which is sufficient to replace an internal combustion delivery van. URB-E has launched in New York and Los Angeles, where riders can earn between $18 and $24 an hour, with paid time off. The company's mission is “to be the global leader in foldable, emission-free transportation solutions.”The last mile in the supply chain, between a distribution center and a retail location or your home, has been the focus of innovation over the past century, starting when United Parcel Service was founded in Seattle using bikes. The evolution of on-demand delivery, however, became enmeshed with fossil fuel-powered cars and vans, and we're still paying the price. What could last mile deliveries look like in a post-carbon society? It may resemble the founding of UPS, but with logistics and electric bike technology taking the place of pedal power. In this episode we talk about the choice he made to keep an active lifestyle traveling the world instead of following the much often recommended advice to provide Catherine with a stable schedule and environment, how Catherine responds to having a new adventure in a new place every few days, traveling with a loved one with dementia, and how he's had to come to terms with the fact that one day their travels will come to a natural end. Kelli Garrett began her professional career the very next day after graduating college with an entry-level position at United Parcel Service. Kelli quickly moved up the ranks of the company, and within a couple of years, she was promoted to operations manager where she was in charge of an entire UPS center with over 200 employees. With a knack for turning under-performing centers into highly-effective ones, Kelli was transferred to multiple facilities over her career at UPS. Eventually, she was transferred to New Jersey and promoted to Division Manager where she was over multiple centers and 1000+ employees. With a longing to return back to South Carolina and a dream to become an entrepreneur, Kelli left UPS in the year 2000 after 12 years of service. Since leaving corporate America, Kelli has owned and operated multiple successful businesses including a mortgage company, a candy manufacturing company, an appraisal company, multiple convenience stores, a restaurant, a landscaping business, a courier company, and many others. Kelli believes strongly in the notion of “not having all of her eggs in one basket” and therefore regards multiple streams of income as a must-have. Her current businesses include a real estate rental portfolio, a residential and commercial rehabbing business, and a hard money lending business called Rehab Wallet. Kelli's strong work ethic, dedication to treating people fairly and ability to recruit great talent has proven to bring much success to all of her business ventures over the past 30+ years. //SAY HI TO KELLI Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kelli.garrett.1675 Instagram: @kelli.garrett2

In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents. His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race  hand in hand.Get a copy of Tony's book hereFollow Tony on FacebookFollow Tony on IGFollow Tony on TwitterFind Tony on Linkedin
