It is a privilege to welcome singer, musician, and author Jeff Michaels to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Whether his music is being played during some of television's most popular reality shows or inspiring people in the aftermath of Boston's worst terrorist attack, he has entertained fans with thought-provoking lyrics examining today's most significant social and political issues while infusing them with his unique brand of humor. Jeff's dedication to the independent music scene has been a lifelong cause. Several of his songs have been licensed to over a dozen television shows, appearing in episodes of The Real World and Teen Moms (MTV) and the T.O. Show (VH1).Jeff was also a member of pop band Luce, whose music appeared on major motion picture soundtracks for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and 13 Going on 30! His willingness to use his music to commentate on some of society's most challenging issues has helped Jeff carve out a dedicated fan base. His song advocating equal rights, “Same F'ing Sun,” resulted in overwhelming fan support and attention from gay activist groups. Another of Jeff's songs, Boston Strong, captured the city's remarkable response to the tragic Boston Marathon bombing, resulting in Jeff receiving a personal thank-you letter from former Massachusetts Governor Duval Patrick. Jeff's passion for creating extends beyond the world of music to published books. His comedic travel book, Please Hug Me—I've Been Delayed, was featured on NPR and the Chicago Tribune. Jeff is a vocal proponent of human rights when he isn't writing or creating music. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Jeff Michaels spoke about how his music was incorporated into classic reality TV shows, inspiring people after Boston's darkest day with music and his new single: “Lost in the Night.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.
Here we are with musician, songwriter, and activist David Fagin who has spent his career challenging the industry. As frontman of The Rosenbergs, he pioneered artist-friendly deals and teamed up with Robert Fripp to fight for master ownership. He's testified on Capitol Hill, composed for major networks, and co-wrote Boston Strong, the Boston Marathon theme song.A former HuffPost columnist, he's never shied away from controversy, from taking on corporate exploitation to creating viral videos with millions of views. Leading The Counterfeiters and The Wankers, he mixes music, satire, and pranks—including fooling the internet with a fake Oasis reunion tour. We will get to hear about his unique experience and the advice he shares for artists.

Karen Cordaway lives in Connecticut and found her love for baseball shortly after becoming a new mom. We discuss how Karen was captivated not by her town's favorite — The New York Yankees — but instead by the early 2000s Boston Red Sox. We dive into exactly what it was about the Sox that drew her in and explore the emotional rollercoaster of losing connection with the team as players moved on. She also gives a first-hand account of what it was like to be at Fenway Park the day of the Boston City Marathon bombing, and how the city rallied together to become “Boston Strong” in the aftermath. Karen is the host of The Everyday Bucket List Podcast, and together, we discuss the beauty of unplanned adventures in sports and life, highlighting how sometimes the most memorable moments aren't those we spend months planning or pour money into but are spontaneous decisions made in search of fun. In our first stab at Legendary's Monsterverse, we tackle 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is really just a shiny American remake of Invasion of the Astro-Monster, Destroy All Monsters, and All Monsters Attack except there are no aliens dressed like a New Wave band and nuclear radiation is net positive for the environment. We've got our favorite Godzilla autist Andy from Those Good Old Fashioned Values back to talk all about our big favorite guy and why this movie isn't good. At least Nicole's home turf of Boston gets razed in the climax. Too bad you can't see much of it through all the CG snow/rain/fog. Brought to you by Murk-O-Vision! *Yes, we'll go back and do Kong: Skull Island when we hit 2020 and COVID makes it so there were only three movies to talk about for the entire year. Monday, April 15, 2013 stands as the most chaotic time in Boston's modern history and was the beginning of a traumatic four-day manhunt that shutdown the city. Two home-made pressure cooker bombs went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon twelve seconds apart, filled with enough nails and ball bearings to cause maximum damage. Three people were killed as a direct result of the explosions on Boylston Street that afternoon: 29-year-old restaurant manager, Krystle Campbell, 23-year-old Chinese student Lingzi Lu, and the youngest of the victims, 8-year-old Dorchester boy Martin Richard; 264 others were injured, some lost limbs from the blasts. In the days that followed, MIT Police Officer Sean Collier would be ambushed and murdered by the wanted men, a civilian carjacked and terrified for their life, another officer would nearly die, and one more would succumb to injuries from the shootout a year later. Journalist and Boston Strong co-author Dave Wedge joins me to talk about the 10th anniversary of Boston Marathon Bombings and the events that followed in Cambridge and Watertown.Follow the show at @crimeofthetruestkind. On this Monday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, Sid makes the day's theme the recognition of the ten-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. Lest we forget the gravity of that day's horrific events and what it means to be "Boston strong" as legendary Red Sox slugger David Ortiz so eloquently put it during his on-field speech just a week after the marathon explosions. In other news of the day, Ohio Representative Jim Jordan gets ready to hold his Judiciary committee hearings here in New York City aimed at exposing Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg, a Ron DeSantis PAC releases an advertisement video meant to attack Donald Trump, Trump releases his own campaign video aimed directly back at DeSantis, and Glenn Youngin and Mike Pompeo essentially pull themselves out of the 2024 presidential race. Curtis Sliwa, Rich Lowry, Nicole Malliotakis, Noam Laden, Scott Zolak, Jennifer Harrison, Madeline Brame and Dan Mason join the program, and as always make sure you don't miss out on the "Movie Monday" installment of The Peerless Boilers Sid's Take Trivia Game. SEASON 02: BONUS EPISODE 07 10 Years Since the Boston Marathon Bombing We have a very special bonus episode for you today. It's been 10 years since the Boston Marathon bombing. An event that impacted so many lives forever. An event that caused the country to rally around Boston. An event that strengthened and united Bostonians like never before. We became Boston Strong. Today we are taking a minute to reflect back to that day in 2013, but also to tell a redemption story ten years in the making. Thank you for joining us for this very special bonus episode. Our guest today is one of our Boston Moms Senior Contributing Writers. On Monday, April 15, 2013 at 2:49pm, she was volunteering one block from the Boston Marathon finish line; bagging food for hungry, exhausted runners. Fast forward ten years later, and our very own Kristen Douthit will be running the 2023 Boston Marathon on April 17. Proud is an understatement. We are so thankful to Kristen for making time to share her story with us between marathon training, work and momming her 3 kids. About Our Guest KRISTEN DOUTHIT is Southern by birth, but has called Boston home since 2008. Unlike most Boston natives, she still really loves the snow and cold. She and her husband have two energetic, kind sons (2013, 2014) and a sassy, smart baby girl (2016). Kristen jokes that she has a masters degree in laundry, and a PhD in child conflict resolution — which she uses far more than her actual physics and politics degrees. After seven years as a stay-at-home mom, Kristen went back to work full-time in 2021 as a program coordinator for a research lab at Boston Children's Hospital. In her “spare” time, she runs her own business, serves on multiple alumni committees for her alma mater, and runs marathons. Her passion is seeing moms feel comfortable in their own skin and less alone in the chaos that is motherhood. In honour of the 10 year anniversary of the Boston bombings, we've decided to re-air our conversation with Cassandra Bonn, who ran the marathon on that fateful day back in 2013.Cassandra is 47 year old Account and Sales Executive with Quinte Broadcasting in Belleville ON. She took up running in her early 30s and even though her two children were young at the time, she went all in on training to the point that she qualified for the Boston Marathon. In 2013 with her husband, children and mother in the crowd, she absolutely nailed her first crack at Boston in a net time of 3:34:46. After collecting her medal and belongings, she was walking rather gingerly towards the family meetup area when the two bombs went off. What followed was utter chaos as she and thousands of others tried to make sense of what had happened and flee to safety. Cassandra walks us through the range of emotions she felt from confusion to terror as she reunited with her family and left the gridlocked city. It's been 10 years but the sound of emergency vehicles can still trigger a visceral response in her today. Cassandra didn't allow her Boston experience to be defined by that tragedy. The following year in 2014, she and her husband were two of the over 35,000 Boston Strong runners who made the trek from Hopkinton to Boylston Street, crossing the finish line hand in hand. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon has long been a Boston qualifying event, but after the Boston Marathon was also targeted by terrorism in 2013, the two races now share a unique bond, forged by tragedy, determination and hope. Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray joins us to recount the moments and days after the bombs went off at the finish line. He also shares why he's run this iconic race 50 times and how the entire racing community became “Boston Strong.”Then, from professional Olympic runners like Joan Benoit Samuelson to first-time marathoners, pacers can help you keep a specific time or even set a new PR. And Red Coyote pacers Mike Sullivan and Josh Lacan are here to explain how.And last, the Memorial Marathon has a new and improved process for gear check this year. Since taking on the CDI director role at Brigham at Women's Hospital in October 2017, Deb Jones has made big changes with big impact. These include: A deep focus on risk adjustment and mortality reviews. Boston is an incredibly competitive healthcare environment with 25 hospitals operating within the city. Patients have a choice of where to shop for care, which makes rankings in the likes of U.S. News and World Report absolutely critical for survival. In a 2022, Brigham made the honor roll by grabbing the no. 14 spot in the country on that list. Doubling the number of her staff, to 20 CDI professionals between Brigham and Women's and affiliated Faulkner Hospital. And then retaining them… forever. Jones has yet to lose a single staff member (two that did leave have since returned). Getting after it in general, with provider education, new CDI software, and an engaged team that issues 2,000 queries a month. Deb is a success (in my opinion) because of her positive, engaged, and friendly managerial style, coupled with her close connections to the c-suite, including the CFO, and her ability to tell the right story with the right metrics. If you're a leader in this space, or an aspiring HIM or CDI professional looking to learn from someone with a track record of success, she's worth listening to. We get into all of this—risk adjustment, metrics and reporting strategies, staff retention, leadership, and relationship building—on the latest episode of Off the Record. We also use the word “synergy” a bit too much for either of our liking. But, we recover with some good talk about the Boston restaurant scene, the importance of happy hours (yes, I invited myself on air—awkward), and music too, including her son's music career after graduating from the Berklee College of Music.
Joe Quintanilla, Joe Q represents the newest formed team in beep baseball. The Boston Strong are part of Adapted Sports New England, and eager to attend Beast of the East tournament. They have a goal of making the World Series next year.
“When someone tells you something can't be done, it's a reflection of their limitations not yours.”On this week's episode of the Eat Green Make Green Podcast I sit down with the inspiring Adrianne Haslet. Adrianne is a Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor and Keynote Speaker. A former world ranked ballroom dancer, Adrianne lost the lower half of her left leg in the Boston Marathon bombings. One year later she began dancing again. Three years later she was on the starting line of the Boston Marathon and has run the race multiple times since. We talk all about that life altering day in 2013, her incredibly inspiring comeback story, and how's she's rewritten her life and become one of the most sought after speakers in the world.Show NotesAdrianne's InstagramAdrianne's TEDx

“I can close my eyes still and remember every sign and every person's face and every dog. I can remember all of it. It was a true unicorn of a day.” Adrianne Haslet went through hell to get to the start line of the 2022 Boston Marathon. But she got there. And then, she started in Hopkinton and ran 26.2 miles — with guide Shalane Flanagan by her side every step of the way — to cross the finish line on Boylston Street. Adrianne and Shalane finished the race in 5:18:14, coming in fourth place in the para athletics division. Today, Adrianne returns to the Ali on the Run Show to share every detail of what she calls the best day of her life. ("It sounded like a Rocky movie the whole way," she says.) In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents. His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race hand in hand.Get a copy of Tony's book hereFollow Tony on FacebookFollow Tony on IGFollow Tony on TwitterFind Tony on Linkedin
