This is something a little different for the Halloween season. In the Midwest around 1972 was a wonderful man called himself Dr. Creep (Horror host )he did tons of charities and delighted many of us kids that loved scary movies. The Amazing thing he also believed in the paranormal. Rick Martin his manager tells us wonderful stories about this man. I had the honor of working with him and enjoyed every second of it. Happy Halloween Berry (Dr.Creep) Shock Theater (Dr. Creep) In 1971, WKEF management began looking for a gimmick to garner ratings on Saturday nights. When Hobart suggested a late-night horror movie show, station management accepted the idea; encouraged by colleagues, Hobart himself auditioned for the hosting job by donning a monk's robe, fangs and skull-like make-up, initially calling himself "Dr. Death". After Hobart was given the job the fangs were abandoned and the skull face motif toned down for being too fearsome, and the character's name was changed to "Dr. Creep". Shock Theater premiered on Saturday, January 1, 1972 and was a fixture on WKEF for thirteen years. The title was also spelled Shock Theatre and by 1977 that spelling remained. During that time, Dr. Creep co-hosted Clubhouse 22, a popular weekday afternoon kids show, adding to his local star power. 1972 TV Guide ad for Shock Theater(Dr. Creep) (note fangs and skull-face) Like many other late-night horror shows, Shock Theater/Shock Theatre played classic "B" horror films, with bumpers and breaks featuring the host, leaning more toward the humorous than the horrific. By the mid 1970s, Shock Theater/Shock Theatre had moved to Saturday afternoons, garnering a younger following. The show was moved back to late Saturday night by 1977; then was renamed Saturday Night Dead when WKEF changed network affiliations on January 1, 1980 and the show followed NBC's Saturday Night Live. But by the early 1980s, the show's humor had become more risqué, causing increasing clashes with station management. Consequently, Shock Theater/Shock Theatre ended its run in March 1985, but Hobart remained a Master Control Operator at WKEF for six more years. Dark Divinity by G.A. Miller Narrated by Dana Tyler Bolton Editing by Jack Burrows Assistant editor - Matt Burrows About the author: G.A. Miller is another voice in the chorus of horror authors, drawing his ideas from every day, commonplace events that take unforeseen turns down dark corridors, often with horrific consequences. His lifelong bond with horror began in the late 1950's watching Zacherley, the “Cool Ghoul” host Shock Theater on TV and grew from there. When he picked up the first paperback edition of Stephen King's “Salem's Lot” in 1976, there was no turning back. Once he began committing his own demons to paper, he's had numerous stories published in a variety of publications and his latest novella, “The Shopkeeper: Curios, Curiosities and Rarities” was submitted for consideration in the 2020 Bram Stoker Awards, and he resides in New England. Ghost stories, TV horror hosts, and cemeteries are visited in this Halloween-themed episode. Host Allen Forkum (editor of The Nashville Retrospect newspaper) interviews historian Fletch Coke about the history of Nashville City Cemetery and about the stories of people interred there, including Confederate generals, a mysterious woman buried under a boulder, a U.S. president, the man who named Old Glory, and notable Nashville historical figures. The cemetery is the city's oldest public grave yard, established in 1822. (Segment begins at 04:50) The Captain William Driver monument is pictured in 1959. Driver is known for originating the name “Old Glory” for the American flag. (Image: Nashville Public Library, Nashville Room) This Nashville Banner photo shows the neglected state of City Cemetery in 1937. It accompanied an article headlined “Patriots Rest in Weeds” (see the July 2015 Nashville Retrospect). (Image: Nashville Public Library, Nashville Room, photo by John E. Hood) In 1959, Mayor Ben West headed a major restoration of Nashville City Cemetery. (Image: Nashville Public Library, Nashville Room, photo by Bill Goodman) The Steele boulder monument is pictured in 1984. (Image: Nashville Public Library, Nashville Room) The 1908 survey map of Nashville City Cemetery has been crucial for locating graves at the site. Burial records up to 1846 were lost during the Civil War. (Image: Nashville City Cemetery Association, Metro Archives) Also hear audio clips of Nashville’s legendary TV horror hosts, Dr. Lucifur and Sir Cecil Creape. Experts Jeff Thompson and Larry Underwood (Dr. Gangrene) relate the history of these local TV personalities who, from the ‘50s to the ‘80s, hosted late-night showings of monster movies. (Segment begins at 40:10) Dr. Lucifur (Ken Bramming) as he appeared in the intro to his TV program “Shock Theater” of the 1950s and ’60s. Notice the “mystic circle” effect. (Image: Jeff Thompson) Ken Bramming on the “Shock Theater” set called the Purple Grotto, which featured a door stained with bloody handprints. (Image: Jeff Thompson) Original caption from the Nov. 1, 1976, Nashville Banner: “Resident Opryland spook Sir Cecil Creape greets 4-year-old twins Keith and Kevin Tidwell.” (Image: Nashville Public Library, Nashville Room, photo by Bob Ray) This cut-out mask of Sir Cecil Creape’s face was used to promote the Channel 4 show “Creature Feature” in the early '70s. The show was hosted by the ghoulish Sir Cecil, played Russ McCown. (Image: Stanley Hime) Dr. Gangrene (Larry Underwood) is an award-winning Nashville horror host who has been performing for almost 20 years, carrying on the tradition of Dr. Lucifur and Sir Cecil Creape. (Image: Larry Underwood) Larry Underwood (right) and his brother, Jimmy, are pictured in Ben Cooper brand Halloween costumes in 1972. (Image: Larry Underwood) And finally, Allen Forkum reviews some of the “creepier” stories in the October 2018 issue of The Nashville Retrospect newspaper, including: the auction of Jacob Schnell’s “haunted house” in 1974; the 1926 Nashville Banner editorial about Halloween vandalism; a 1976 Banner story about Morris Levine and his popular Halloween parties; and an 1868 article about the strange fate of a young woman buried with a valuable diamond ring. Content warning: This episode deals with the topic of mental health. Some of the imagery is quite intense and is presented as horrific.  In this episode Dawn, Rachel, and guest Woody discuss Shock Theater: the season 3 finale in which Sam leaps into an inmate of a sanitarium and the treatments cause him to believe he is actually some of the persons a normal viewer would have already seen him leap into. Somehow in this setting we find a way to discuss the importance of unicorns, RuPaul Memes, and Arby’s curly fries. A lot of us were introduced to classic horror films through midnight showings on local TV on Saturday nights. Many of us knew of our local horror host.  The horror host was (and still is) a great American phenomenon full of crazy costumes, clever names, and a lot of charisma.  The greats are still legendary, and horror hosts continue entertaining us on the internet and streaming video outlets.  In this episode I talk about the confluence of events that led to late night horror movies on television, and some of the unique personalities that haunt our memories with our first views of classic scary Universal monsters.   If you like the show, please consider writing a review on iTunes.  It really helps.  Thanks a lot for listening.    You can now subscribe to the Hellbent for Horror podcast now available on iTunes and Stitcher   iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/hellbent-for-horror/id1090978706 Stitcher link: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/hellbent-for-horror?refid=stpr   For you, the listeners of Hellbent for Horror, Audible is offering a free audiobook download with a free 30-day trial to give you the opportunity to check out their service. Late Saturday nights was a time for little boys to howl. "Shock Theater" came on around one! We learned every line of the 'original' "Dracula" (1931), memorized every release date of every Mummy movie from 1932 to 1945, and, most important, got married for life to: "The Bride of Frankenstein". This is the story of those late Saturday nights, which gave our mothers such trouble, since it was they who would have to ... wake us up for church.
