An in-depth conversation with the Sikh musician and educator about growing up as a child of immigrants and turning to music for solace and inspiration. Launching from last week's Q&A with Sonny Singh, a Sikh musician and educator, we delve into his role in the film From Here, an eloquent and moving documentary that follows the stories of four children of immigrants who confront racism, xenophobia, and an oppressive immigration system with creativity and activism. Sonny is a musician with the band Red Baraat. In 2022 he released a solo album called Chardi Kala—in which he returns to the Sikh devotional music of his childhood (which we discuss at length in this podcast). Sonny has also spent decades working as an educator on social justice issues. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/border-chronicle/support

Taína Asili speaks with Sonny Singh, a Brooklyn-based musician who has brought his fiery trumpet & vocals to audiences around the world for the last decade . Sonny's first musical outlet as a child of immigrant parents in North Carolina was singing Sikh devotional music, later exploring many other musical genres. In 2003, Sonny co-founded the political rock band Outernational and recorded an album produced by Tom Morello. Since 2008, his vocals and trumpet have become central to the sound and raw energy of the renowned bhangra brass band Red Baraat. Sonny's 2022 debut solo album, produced by Wil-Dog Abers of Ozomatli, is entitled Chardi Kala, the Sikh concept of revolutionary eternal optimism. Chardi Kala is a return to Sonny's Punjabi & Sikh roots, but with the lens he's developed over the course of his life as a touring musician, educator, and activist. The O Positive Festival, held in Kingston, New York, in early October every year, presents a weekend full of music, art and wellness activities across all genres and disciplines, for all age groups, indoors and outdoors, and all for the price of a donation. But it's behind the scenes that O Positive has the biggest impact. The festival confronts the lack of affordable and free health care amongst the USA's artistic community by exchanging 'The Art of Medicine' for 'The Medicine of Art' by which "underinsured artists and musicians create and perform in exchange for a variety of services donated by doctors, dentists and complementary care providers."For this Episode of One Step Beyond, Tony Fletcher speaks with Art Director Lindsay Wolkowicz and Music Director Lara Hope about the specific health problems working artists face going about their manual labour, and how O Positive seeks to make a lasting change in the landscape of USA health care - or rather, the lack of it. Tony also takes his tape recorder around the various concerts, wellness activities, and interactive art displays, which range from tours of the Festival's celebrated Murals program, to a Mindfulness walk, an interactive book-gifting art display, and music by such varied acts as Mercury Rev, Roxiny, Sonny Singh, Amanda Palmer and the Mac & Cheeze Balkan Power Trio.More information about the O Positive festival can be found athttps://opositivefestival.orgThe O Positive 2022 Festival Music Preview playlist can be found athttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/3qNZ6CRBHwACM3T7tYw3JMThe IlluminatiO+n immersive art, music and wellness audio tour is available at:https://opositivefestival.org/illumination/Rebecca Kelly G is at https://www.rebeccakellyg.com/Three of this year's commissioned murals depicted below, depending on your streaming platform:Questions/comments/suggestions? It is not often that I get to see an artist perform live at a record release party days after our interview. But - that is what happened with Sonny Singh and his Joe's Pub premiere for the record Chardi Kala.
Red Baraat's Sonny Singh delivers borderless Punjabi anthems of hope and love as he takes center stage on the debut solo album “Chardi Kala,” whose title translates to the Sikh practice of eternal optimism and determination through the darkest of times. Produced by three-time Grammy winner Wil-Dog Abers of Ozomatli, you can hear their influence on each other via “Thir Ghar Baiso.”
For over a decade, Sonny Singh has brought his fiery trumpet and lead vocals to audiences around the world with his acclaimed group, Red Baraat. Now, he has released his solo record, Chardi Kala, named after the Sikh concept of revolutionary, eternal optimism. Offering a response to the violence and tumultuousness of these times, Chardi Kala, released and recorded independently, pushes the boundaries of Sikh Kartan and South Asian spiritual music. It also represents Singh's return to his early Punjabi and Sikh roots, as seen now through the lens of his experiences as a touring musician, educator and activist. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

It was anti-capitalist mass direct action. How did it even happen? Savneet Singh is not only a great friend, but he’s also one of the most driven workers I’ve ever met, who offers such an interesting perspective on life, entrepreneurship and business. Overall, he’s just incredible at what he does. Savneet and I met through our mutual friend, Sonny Singh, and I’ve been a fan of his for a while now. Savneet is the CEO of PARTech, a provider of point of sale software to the retail and hospitality industry. I was so excited to have a CEO like Savneet on because his company is actually a publicly traded company, trading under $PAR on the NYSE. Savneet has accomplished quite a lot before even starting at PARTech. His investments range from real estate to Uber to cryptocurrencies to websites. Not to mention, he’s also a partner with Ali Hamed, a past guest on Panic, at the VC firm CoVenture. Savneet has so much vision around the software space, some of which he shares with me on the podcast. In this episode, Savneet and I also discuss his admiration of Warren Buffett, public companies, fintech, PARTech’s origin story, Saas businesses, COVID-19 impact on restaurants, SPACs, ecommerce, bitcoin and more. Today, we’re gatecrashing one of the lecture theatres at Cardiff Metropolitan University to join our student teachers as they grapple with some of the big issues in education today. In a special (very) extended edition of the podcast, recorded live in front of an audience of PGCE primary and secondary students, we’ve gathered together a panel of speakers who represent school senior leadership, government, the regional consortia and academia to present and discuss on the topic of curriculum design. Speaking just three days after the publication of the final version of the Curriculum for Wales, due to be implemented in schools from 2022, our panellists are generous with their thoughts and advice to the next generation of the profession, making it clear that we need to become curriculum designers as well as classroom practitioners. Our panel consists of: Dr. Kevin Smith from Cardiff University Gareth Rein from St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Penarth Barry Crompton from Stanwell School in Penarth Nicky Hagendyk from the Education Achievement Service regional consortium Sonny Singh from the Welsh Government Following their presentations, the panel answer questions posed by the audience. This event took place twice (as we have a lot of student teachers!), and you can hear the audience Q&A from the other session (featuring a slightly different lineup of panellists) in a bonus episode also released today. If you’ve been inspired to ‘read, read, read’, the book recommendations from Kevin and Gareth are listed below to get you started. Dr. Kevin Smith Dewey, J. (1938) Experience and Education. New York, Macmillan. Eisner, E. W. (1979) The educational imagination: on the design and evaluation of school programs. New York: Macmillan Freire, P. (2014). Our curriculum design panel mega-episode landed in your feed today, with nearly two hours of thought-provoking presentations and discussion about curriculum design and the new Curriculum for Wales. We actually ran this event twice on the day so that every one of our PGCE students could see it. The second run had a slightly different panel - Kathryn Lewis from Central South Consortium replaced Nicky Hagendyck and Lloyd Hopkin from the Welsh Government replaced Sonny Singh. We retained the services of Dr Kevin Smith, Gareth Rein and Barry Crompton. The second batch of students also had some great questions for the panel, and we didn't want you to miss out on hearing these, so we hope you enjoy an additional 20 minutes with our experts.

On Sikhism: "It's about having direct devotion and access to the Divine, and if that's our way of thinking, that is a commitment to radical equality. Prayer is an important access point to the divine, but prayer is also fighting against injustice, organizing, feeding people, clothing people..." On being a faith leader: "There's no concept of 'clergy' in the Sikh faith. I define [a faith leader] as someone who is organizing and mobilizing people from a particular faith community for ... at its best, various forms of social and economic justice." On leadership opportunities for youth: "We're seeing very smart and on-point young folks that are challenging some of the more conservative elements of our community... about homosexuality, caste, and gender equality." In this episode of our free podcast series “NYC Faith Leaders,” Maggi Van Dorn interviews Sonny Singh, a Brooklyn-based justice educator, activist, published writer and community organizer and musician, who talks with us about Sikhism, his call to social justice, and the expression of his faith and calling in music. We hope you will not just listen to this series, but download the podcasts to hear while driving, jogging, or washing the dishes. And subscribe in order to be alerted when new installments are available. It’s a great way to learn about the faiths of our New York City neighbors.
