On this week's episode, Equiteam's Liz Daniels chats to Senga Riches, Director of All-Steps Formation Riding. Formation riding is something that the Equiteam founder knew very little about, so when Senga likened it to synchronised swimming, with horses instead of water, we were instantly intrigued. From being inspired by the Spanish Riding School, to helping with basic schooling, and assisting in confidence growth, Senga's passion to make formation riding accessible to all is very clear. With a strong ethos on inclusivity, All-Steps Formation Riding host clinics, competitions and demos all over the UK and are looking for people of all levels to have a go. Rupert is the creative force behind Horse Boy, Rowan is his mentor, teacher and muse. Together all aspects of Horse Boy begin and from there the wider team helps to develop each aspect.Rupert Isaacson was born in 1967 in London to a South African mother and Zimbabwean father, and grew up half in London, half on a remote horse farm in the British countryside and also with Africa looming large in his life. Coming from a family of pioneers and adventurers – Russian Jews who went to Africa on his father's side, British, Dutch and mixed race settlers on his mother's side – Rupert's grandparents were journalists, war correspondents, cattle ranchers and artists. His father is an architect and his mother a sculptor. So making your own destiny is something he grew up with. A journalist for the British and American press from the early 1990s (Daily and Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Independent on Sunday, Esquire, National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveller – among others), he has also published several guidebooks to Africa and India, and is he author of three non-fictional memoirs: The Healing Land (a New York Times Notable Book), which tells the story of his family in Africa, and of his own time spent living with the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert; The Horse Boy (a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller), which tells the story of his journey across Mongolia on horseback with his autistic son Rowan; and The Long Ride Home, which tells of the three subsequent healing journeys he and his son made to Africa, Australia and the Navajo Reservation, as well as his discovery of how horses can help autism and special needs in general.Rupert also runs the Horse Boy Foundation, from his New Trails ranch near Austin, Texas, which offers services to autism families, and helps direct several satellite centers offering similar services in North America and Europe. In partnership with Iliane Lorenz he also teaches Horse Boy Method, Horse Boy Learning (a homeschool technique aimed at autism, ADD and ADHD families among others), and other kinetic learning techniques, along with Stress Free Dressage, a way of introducing riders to the higher levels of equitation without being screamed at(!).A successful documentary filmmaker – The Horse Boy and Endangerous – and write and conceiver of reality TV shows (The Quest – which aired on ABC in 2014 – was his original concept and he helped produce the show), and in addition his mainstream Hollywood projects include The Horse Boy feature film and The Goth Lords.A career in human rights runs parallel to all this. In 2004 he founded the Indigenous Land Rights Fund, which helps hunting and gathering tribes gain legal title to their ancestral land and which helped the Bushmen of Botswana win the largest land claim in African history in 2006 – as a result of which he is now banned from Botswana (!).Finally there is his first love – horses both cross country riding, and classical dressage (he works closely with the Valenca Family in Portugal and studies with Christian Bachinger of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna). A small time breeder of Lusitano horses, Rupert relaxes by reading historical novels, planting trees and drinking beer, especially IPAs. He quite likes wine too. Joell Dunlap runs Square Peg Foundation one of the most successful and pioneering equine assisted programs in North America. Starting with a simple idea: how could the quirky kids find a place in the world of riding as a sport when the world of dressage and hunter jumper barns can be so judgemental and unforgiving. She fell into creating programs for people with autism, ADHD, depression, eating disorders, and so on first with jumping, dressage and polo and then organically into therapeutic world, but without losing sight of helping them learn and excel as equestrians. The well-being of the equine partner is paramount at Square Peg and Joell is know for doing the impossible, taking off the track Thoroughbreds and putting them through the Old Masters system of training dressage from the ground with in hand work, long reining and lunging. The clients themselves become the horse trainers and end up often finding employment through this program which is now a registered health provision for San Mateo County, CA - aka Silicon Valley. It sounds like a slick path to success but Joell started as a teenage single mother of a child with learning challenges, working at the race tracks galloping two-year-olds in order to make ends meet. No silver spoon here. Her story provided her with the insights and compassion needed to work with challenged and at risk youth, including teenage sex-workers from San Francisco's notorious Tenderloin neighborhood, as well as putting together successful educational programs for kids, that no school would take. Her partnerships with renowned classical dressage trainers, such as the Valenca family from Portugal, Christian Bachinger of the Spanish Riding School and Dominique Barbier have brought her a recognition internationally that she has used to help establish programs as far afield as Europe and Asia. Join us for a fascinating discovery of how Square Peg Foundation makes all this work. In this episode of Tart Words, Suzanne Fox and Linda Hengerer are discussing Mary Stewart’s book Airs Above the Ground and how she uses unusual settings, creates vivid animal characters, and shows relationship dynamics.   It was first published in 1965 by Hodder & Stoughton and is now available in ebook editions.  Description from Amazon:Vanessa March's husband Lewis is meant to be on a business trip in Stockholm. So why does he briefly appear in newsreel footage of a fire at a circus in Vienna, with his arm around another woman? Vanessa flies to Austria to find her husband - and inadvertently becomes involved in a mystery surrounding the famous dancing stallions of Austria's Spanish Riding School . . .Takeaways for writers:In Airs Above the Ground, Vanessa March is having lunch with her mother’s friend Carmel, whose son Tim wants to see his father in Vienna. Carmel proposes that Vanessa chaperone Tim when she travels to meet her husband Lewis. Vanessa and Lewis should have been on holiday, but an urgent work assignment came up and Lewis had to postpone the holiday; they had a blazing row that Vanessa regrets. Carmel mentions having seen Lewis in a newsreel about a circus fire near Vienna; after seeing the newsreel herself, Vanessa calls Carmel to say she’ll take Tim with her to Vienna and hand him over to his father. Vanessa and Tim forge an unlikely alliance, and both give each other the courage to continue on their respective journeys. Both Tim and Lewis have secrets that play into the story, as does Vanessa’s background as a vet and Tim’s desire to work with the Lippizaner stallions. As secrets are revealed and surprising skills unveiled, mysteries are solved and relationships are forged.Exercises for writers:Unusual Settings – The circus and the Schloss are not your usual settings; note how Mary Stewart incorporates the unique aspects of each into the story. Whether your settings are unusual or not, how do you use Setting to enhance the story’s narrative? Vivid Animal Characters – Horses play an integral part in Airs Above the Ground. If you have animal characters, either as pets or as a plot point, how do you give them a personality that makes readers believe the animal/character? Think about animals in movies or on television (Beethoven, Lassie) and how they are the focus of the story. Even if your animal character isn’t a large part of the story, what small trait can you give them that will resonate with readers?Relationship Dynamics – Vanessa meets Tim at the airport when Carmel gives him over to Vanessa. Though not far apart in age, they are in experience. How do you introduce characters and give them context for a relationship? In the beginning it doesn’t seem that Vanessa and Tim will spend a lot of time together, but they do; how do you show a growing friendship between characters who would not naturally be friends?

This is one of the most fabulous interviews I've had the privilege of being part of. Andreas Hausberger. He's a chief rider at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. He is beautiful, friendly, learned, generous and has a great sense of humour. His passion is infectious. Andreas is a genius with work in hand and is in high demand from some of the top riders of today to help with the high school movements of piaffe, passage and pirouettes. In this all encompassing interview, Andreas talks about the history and tradition of the School and what it has to offer the modern sport. He starts with his journey up the levels of the Spanish Riding School and we get deeper into the flexibility of the School, the masters who went before and their influence….there's a lot of fascinating history in this. For years Andreas has worked with German dressage royalty: the Werndls and Rothenbergers and he gives us some insight into this work and talks a little bit about Cosmo and Dalera. It's reassuring to know the top riders have their ups and downs as well! Andreas emphasises the importance of patience, consistency and having good eyes on the ground; the importance of the rider's seat; taking the fear out of training, not forcing the horse and seeing the horse as a partner as well as focusing on doing the exercises correctly. We go on to discuss Classical versus Rollkur as training methods as well. All I can say is…listen to this podcast! Due to travel restrictions, it was conducted over WhatsApp rather than face to face so the quality isn't as great as I'd hoped for. You might have to sit down and pay close attention, but that's hardly a bad thing.

My regular clients will recognize serious curriculum concepts like “giant stripper boobs” and “50 lbs of queso in your pockets.” While I’m not exactly the Spanish Riding School in terms of presentation, I love to coach — and my favorite way to do is through audio coaching. In this episode, I describe what’s unique about my customized audio coaching services (besides references to strippers and queso). I also include a real audio coaching segment I did for a special client and her horse. Best of all, I include a super fun offer to my listeners to email me any issues with their horses or horsemanship that they would like assistance with. I will be selecting one or two each week — and will do a customized audio coaching segment for them on the podcast! Horses have been part of Jessica's life from the very beginning, riding in her first big championships, the Bundeschampionate at age 12. As a senior, she's been on the podium at the World Cup Finals, Aachen CHIO, the Europeans and World Equestrian Games both as a German team member and individually. Her most successful senior partners have been the stallion, Unee BB as well as the two mares, Zaire and Dalera BB. Having trained with Isabell Werth in the past, the German now works with her brother Benjamin, also a successful rider, as well as Jonny Hilberath, and Andreas Hausberger from The Spanish Riding School. I interviewed Jessica at the Europeans in Rotterdam where she had a rollercoaster of a show with Dalera. From an uncharacteristic miscommunication in the Grand Prix, which brought tears of shock to the rider, she stormed back for a glorious Special, and a Personal Best freestyle, which saw her with a team gold and individual bronze, beaten only by her team mates, also with PBs. She might be softly spoken, but Jessica has a real competitiveness and passion for bringing out the very best in her highly intelligent, if a bit crazy, four legged proteges. We talk about keeping it natural for the horses and learning to surrender as well as working with each unique personality. Training without force, giving horses a reason to work and the importance of routine. Jessica is really into rider fitness as well so we talk about what she does and her new “Dressurfit” course which she has developed with brother Benjamin…which is coming soon in English! So, yay! We then talk about the advantages and disadvantages of being on the German Team, relaxing at shows and we discuss her new goals.

Monty Roberts is the creator of the world-renowned and revolutionary equine training technique called Join-Up. Monty travels the world demonstrating that non-violent, gentle, training creates breakthrough performance as you partner with your horse. Monty grew up on a working horse farm as a firsthand witness to traditional, often violent methods of horse training and breaking the spirit with an abusive hand. Rejecting that, he went on to win multiple World Championships in the show ring and was named FEI Man of the Year in 1997. Today, Monty’s goal is to share his message that “Violence is never the answer” and to that end he is credited with launching the first of its kind Equus Online University; an interactive online lesson site that is the definitive learning tool for violence-free training.   Favourite Inspirational Quote My life’s goal is to leave the world a better place than I found it for horses, and for people too.   Who Has Inspired Monty Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the most influential world leader that ever lived for improving the lives of horses.   About This Episode Monty reveals how he is living the life he has dreamt about. www.schoenbrunn.at | Download Tour-Guide (PDF)© by Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.

Schloß Schönbrunn - The State Rooms and Imperial Apartments on the piano nobile

The Carousel Room owes its name to the large oil painting hanging on the left. It depicts the Ladies‘ Carousel held by Maria Theresa in the Winter Riding School of the Hofburg in 1743 to mark the recapturing of Prague in the War of the Austrian Succession. This Winter Riding School, today known as the Spanish Riding School, is still the setting for performances by the famous Lipizzan stallions. Here Maria Theresa rides on a Lipizzaner at the centre of the picture, followed by her ladies-in-waiting. To the left is a portrait of Maria Theresa’s father, Emperor Charles VI, wearing a sumptuous Spanish coat-dress. www.schoenbrunn.at | Download Tour-Guide (PDF)© by Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.
