Big announcement this week, starting February 1st the HWIDG Patreon will be back up and collecting donations, please edit your subscriptions as you see fit, and thank you for your support. This week El Chaco are back in 2025 and bringing in a big episode talking about...ReparationsPlaying GodCommand TrackVictim points are all the rage, and they'll continue to be as long as we keep giving into this delusion that you are somehow owed for having a bad experience. In the same vein as trying to get an apartment because you were on the hours long sinking of the Andrea Doria, the gimmies are out here trying to capitalize on events a century gone by. This is absurd, the only person to blame for your circumstances is yourself, take responsibility and move on.It's the Year 2125, HWIDG has been on the internet for 107 years. The Patreon is at nearly 200 space dollars. Tab and Chaco are hooked to dozens of machines barely alive, eyes held open to an endless stream of AI Generated rage bait, so the show may go on. Are they alive? Technically yes. Is life worth living? Not at all. Why are we trying to extend life, when we haven't even gotten rid of the things that make life crap? Maybe we should work on improving today, instead of gaining endless tomorrows.Someone once spoke on power corrupting, someone else once spoke about how those who seek power are the least qualified to wield it. Both of those have been rattling around my head for the last 5 years as I've moved more and more into management. This vicious cycle of earning more, and living better has pushed me from the simple console jockey I once was, into a leader, and I gotta say it sucks. At the end of the day someone has to make the tough choices, and I think I'm better at it than someone who wants to make the tough choices, so I guess I'll just keep going. All of that plus, News, Your voicemails, and as I said February 1st the Patreon will return to offset the costs of producing the show.
Seefahrten sind immer auch eigenwillige Unternehmen. Man weiß nie, was auf hoher See passiert.
Matt Crawford speaks with author Marcia Peck about her debut novel, Water Music: A Cape Cod Story. This is the story of twelve-year-old Lily Grainger, and the summer of 1956 spent with her family on Cape Cod. That was the summer the Andrea Doria sank, pilot whales stranded, and Lily's father built a house he couldn't afford. Target practice on a nearby decommissioned Liberty Ship echoed not only the rancor in her parents' marriage, a rancor stoked by Lily's competitive uncle, but also Lily's troubles with her sister, her cousins, and especially with her mother. Lily dives deep into her cello lessons and her love of Cape Cod to try and navigate the stormy waters of her familial relationships. While this is a story of a 12-year-old girl coming of age, anyone can pull something from this story and see themselves as an adolescent trying to figure things out or as a parent doing the same, or both. A lovely deep and rich read that will envelope you.

Breaking the Silence with host Dr. Gregory Williams With Guest, Award-winning writer, author of Water Music a Cape Cod Story, Marcia Peck This week's Special Guest will be Marcia Peck. "Marica is the author of Water Music: A Cape Cod Story." She is an award-winning writer and has received many awards. Her articles have appeared in Musical America, Strad Magazine, Strings Magazine, and Senza Sordino. Her work has been supported by The Minnesota State Arts Board, The Loft Literary Center, Ragdale Foundation and Hambidge Center. Guest, Marcia Peck's book, Water Music, The bridge at Sagamore was closed when we got there that summer of 1956. We had to cross the canal at Buzzards Bay over the only other roadway that tethered Cape Cod to the mainland. Thus twelve-year-old Lily Grainger, while safe from ‘communists and the Pope', finds her family suddenly adrift. In her increasingly desperate efforts to salvage her parents' marriage, Lily discovers betrayals beyond her understanding as well as the small ways in which people try to rescue each other. She draws on her music lessons and her love of Cape Cod—from Sagamore and Monomoy to Nauset Spit and Wellfleet Dunes, seeking safe passage from the limited world of her salt marsh to the larger, open ocean.

We hear about an exciting project to save and record accounts of shipwreck survivors. The project's goal is to raise awareness and understanding of the experiences of those who have been unfortunate enough to experience shipwreck. This is crucially important at a time when familiarity with life at sea is diminishing and there is a noticeable absence of empathy for seafarers in distress - and yet, as a maritime nation, seafaring remains a huge part of our history and shipping is a growing industry that brings us ever more of our worldly needs. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Daniel Jamieson who is running the research project at the University of Plymouth. They discuss the long and fascinating history of shipwreck survivors' accounts before discussing the many interviewees who have already contributed to the project, providing eyewitness insights into a variety of contemporary and well known maritime disasters as well as far more personal stories of maritime disaster. The stories include Helen Cawley, who survived the sinking of the liner Lakonia in 1963 as a 14-year old; Sheelagh Lowes, stranded on Suwarrow of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific 1996 for 6 months, her yacht Short Time having been thrown on a reef; a number of survivors of the sinking of the liner Andrea Doria in 1956; Sara Hedrenius, who survived the sinking of the ferry Estonia in 1994 in the Baltic; and Ben “Skippy” Cummings whose vessel capsized andsank on a reef off Antigua, four miles from the finish of his trans-Atlantic race.

April's challenge prompt is to read a book recommended to you by a bookseller or librarian. Ideally, you'd ask a bookseller or librarian for one, but also we know there's a lot of reasons you may not want to do that and that's ok! There are other options, like reading something a favorite bookstagrammer or booktok account has recommended, or picking a book off of a recommendation display at the store or library. Or you can take one of our highly specific (to our own tastes) recommendations that we offer to you in this episode. Books Recommended: Fight Night by Miriam Toewes Quartet and After Leaving Mr. McKenzie by Jean Rhys Evil Flowers by Gunnhild Øyehaug Slenderman: Online Obsession, Mental Illness, and the Violent Crime of Two Midwestern Girls by Kathleen Hale The Membranes by Chi Ta-Wei (this is also on Hoopla) The Bay of Noon by Shirley Hazzard The Mount by Carol Emshwiller (this is also on Hoopla) Collision Course: The Classic Story of the Collision of the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm by Alvin Moscow Our next book discussions will be A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab and All This Could Be Different by Sarah Thankam Mathews. You can find them at your local bookstore or library and read along with us. A survivor of the Andrea Doria tells her story.
Hanna describes the chain of avoidable errors that led to the collision and sinking of the Italian cruise liner Andrea Doria off the coast of Nantucket. Intro music is from "Across the Line" by the Wellington Sea Shanty Society.
For one of our first listener requests in a long time, we will be doing one of the last remaining Average-Joe battleships: The Andrea Doria. It's not great, it's not bad, it's just good. And there is nothing wrong with that. Steve speaks at length with retired talent agent, author and film packager Budd Burton Moss who relates stories of working with a constellation of actors in the 1950s and 1960s, including Rita Hayworth, his long time friendship with Sidney Poitier, his marriage to actress Ruth Roman (Strangers on a Train), her harrowing tale of survival on the sinking Andrea Doria luxury liner, and much more. A very rich interview.

The luxury passenger line Andrea Doria was the pride of post World War 2 Italy. The ship was the embodiment of beauty. In 1954, she and the Swedish ship Stockholm collided during dense fog off Nantucket Island. This is the story of the loss of one of the most luxurious ships in history. I am joined by professional diver and researcher Andrea Murdock Alpini.

We continue our mini series on maritime disasters with the third part of our episode on the wreck of the magnificent Italian passenger liner the Andrea Doria. Launched in 1953 as a means to rebuild Italy's reputation and status on the world stage after the Second World War she enjoyed a splendid career for just three years before she sank in 1956 after a horrific collision off the coast of Massachusetts. To find out more about the wreck of the vessel itself Dr Sam Willis spoke with the underwater explorer John Moyer who has has dived over 120 times on the Andrea Doria wreck, one of the most dangerous wrecks in the world. This episode continues our mini series on maritime disasters and our investigation into the wreck, in the summer of 1956, of the Italian passenger liner, Andrea Doria. This episode includes eyewitness accounts from Linda Hardberger and Mike Stoller. Linda is now 80 and lives in San Antonio Texas – she has been a teacher, librarian, museum curator and is a mother and in spite of her terrible experience on the Andrea Doria has been boating for 40 years. Mike Stoller is now 89, lives in California and is one half of the songwriting team Lieber and Stoller – who wrote, among many other hits, Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock and Stand by Me. The Andrea Doria was built in the 1950s, born from Italy's bruised pride after the Second World War, and seen as a way to put Italy back on the map as a major player in the world of transatlantic travel. She became a hugely important ship for the Italian nation, a true icon of Italian culture and history. Launched in 1953 to great fanfare and fitted with the most exquisite Italian art, she enjoyed a successful career – though cut far too short by the events of July 1956. David and Rachel banter their way through the first part of the sinking of the SS Andrea Doria, doing little justice to listener Christien's fabulous script, but grateful for a chance at a two-parter during a busy week.
Taylor tells Josie about an infamous 1980s TV special about an infamous 1920s gangster. Plus: meteorites, the collectors that love them, and the dogs that don't.

The luxury liner SS Andrea Doria made the voyage from Italy to America a hundred times without incident, and earned rave reviews from her wealthy passengers, who loved her modern décor and fabulous food. On her hundred-and-first trip, however, a cascade of poor decisions, design flaws, and bad luck ended in her sinking just off the coast of Massachusetts. On this episode, we take you through one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century, and attempt to explain why so many experienced divers are still risking their lives trying to salvage the wreck.
