With Dr. Roger Romani (Stanford University):NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has revealed a violent high-energy universe full of stellar explosions, black hole jets, and pulsing stars.  These cosmic objects are often faint when observed with visible light, but glow bright with gamma rays.   Dr. Romani describes the quest to discover the true nature of the most puzzling of these gamma-ray sources.  Several turn out to be a kind of bizarre star corpse called a 'black widow' pulsar -- where a dead star has a companion that it is slowly destroying.This is a talk from 2014, but it is still relevant today.

Astrophysicist Risa Wechsler studies the evolution of the universe. She says that our understanding of how the universe formed and how it will change over time is changing as new technologies for seeing and measuring space come online, like a new high-resolution camera that can quickly map the full sky to see everything that moves, or new spectrographs that will map the cosmos in 3D and enable us to get new clues about the elusive dark matter. Aaron Lee Tasjan has a pretty simple writing process: he gets up around 8am, has a glass of water, and pets his cat. Then he writes. But not every day. "I only write when my body tells me to, when I can go off yesterday's fumes," he told me. And in one of the best rituals I've ever heard, Tasjan always writes with a pencil--but never uses the eraser. "I hate erasers," he says.Tasjan lives in Nashville, where the Frist Art Museum serves as a tremendous source of inspiration for his songs. His new album Stellar Evolution is out now on Blue Elan Records.

Stellar evolution, SN explosion, and nucleosynthesis by Keiichi Maeda. on Wednesday 12 October Massive stars evolve toward the catastrophic collapse of their innermost core, producing core-collapse supernova (SN) explosions as the end products. White dwarfs, formed through evolution of the less massive stars, also explode as thermonuclear SNe if certain conditions are met during the binary evolution. Inflating opportunities in transient observations now provide an abundance of data, with which we start addressing various unresolved problems in stellar evolution and SN explosion mechanisms. In this chapter, we overview the stellar evolution channels toward SNe, explosion mechanisms of different types, and explosive nucleosynthesis. Fundamental parameters for dEB SB2 binary system J064726 39+223431 6 A new challenge for stellar evolution models by Mikhail Kovalev et al. on Monday 26 September We present a study of eclipsing binary J064726.39+223431.6 using spectra from the LAMOST-MRS and TESS photometry. We use full-spectrum fitting to derive radial velocities and spectral parameters: ${T_{rm eff}}_{A,B}=6177,,5820$ K, $v sin{i}_{A,B}=59,,50~kms$ and ${rm [Fe/H]}_{A,B}=-0.19$ dex. The orbital solution and light curve analysis suggest that it is a close pair of fast rotating stars on circular orbit. We measure their masses to be $M_{A,B}=1.307pm0.007,, 1.129pm0.005,M_odot$ and their radii to be $R_{A,B}=1.405pm0.052,, 1.219pm0.060,R_odot$ resulting in surface gravities of $log{g}_{A,B}=4.259pm0.033,,4.319pm0.042$ (cgs). Theoretical models cannot match all of these properties, predicting significantly higher ${T_{rm eff}}$ for a given metallicity. Derived age of the system 1.56 Gyr indicates that both components are younger than Sun. Revisiting the Schönberg-Chandrasekhar limit in post main sequence stellar evolution by Shaswata Chowdhury et al. on Sunday 18 September The Sch"{o}nberg-Chandrasekhar limit in post main sequence evolution for stars of masses in the range $1.4lesssim M/M_{odot}lesssim 6$ gives the maximum pressure that the stellar core can withstand, once the central hydrogen is exhausted. It is usually expressed as a quadratic function of $1/alpha$, with $alpha$ being the ratio of the mean molecular weight of the core to that of the envelope. Here, we revisit this limit in scenarios where the pressure balance equation in the stellar interior may be modified, and in the presence of small stellar pressure anisotropy, that might arise due to several physical phenomena. Using numerical analysis, we derive a three parameter dependent master formula for the limit, and discuss various physical consequences. In this illustrated talk, Dr. Burgasser explains what happens when a newly forming star doesn't have "what it takes" to produce energy in its core in an ongoing way.  This results in "failed stars" or brown dwarfs -- objects that were predicted in theory, but only discovered in the 1990's.   Today, many thousands of these brown dwarfs are known, spanning a wide range of temperatures and masses, and occupying a unique niche at the intersection of stars and planets. Dr. Burgasser discusses how such faint objects are discovered, highlights their exceptional properties, and describes what this (mostly) invisible population can tell us about the formation and history of our Milky Way Galaxy.   Recorded March 9, 2022.Adam Burgasser is a professor of Physics at the University of California,  San Diego, and an astrophysicist who studies the coldest stars, brown dwarfs, and extrasolar planets. Prof. Burgasser defined the “T spectral class” of brown dwarfs as a graduate student; and is one of the co-discoverers of the TRAPPIST-1 exoplanetary system, a system of seven Earth-sized planets orbiting an object at boundary of the star/brown dwarf divide.

Physics Colloquium 14th October 2016 delivered by Professor Thierry Foglizzo The supernova explosion of massive stars is primarily powered by the gravitational contraction of their core into a neutron star, before the formation of a black hole. Despite numerous observations of supernovae in distant galaxies, the underlying mechanism is still a major challenge to theorists. Prof Foglizzo will review the state of the art, with an emphasis on the multidimensional effects of hydro and MHD instabilities. Non axisymmetric one-armed instabilities known as the Standing Accretion Shock Instability and the corotation instability are able to redistribute angular momentum radially even for moderate rotation rates. Numerical simulations of simplified models are used to evaluate their effect on the explosion and the pulsar spin. Surprisingly, both instabilities can be illustrated with a simple hydraulic experiment based on a shallow water analogy. Results are analyzed in view of the constraints on the angular momentum budget set by stellar evolution on the one hand and by the spin properties of pulsars on the other hand.

Transcript: Mass is the fundamental quantity that controls stellar evolution. The main sequence on an HR diagram is a correlation between the properties of luminosity and effective temperature. The main sequence runs from high luminosity hot stars down to low luminosity cool stars, but the underlying variable on the main sequence is the mass of the star. High luminosity hot stars are high mass and low luminosity cool stars are low mass. The principles of stellar evolution were first worked out by the English theorist Arthur Eddington in the 1920s. He used the idea of pressure force balancing the gravity inward force in a star to deduce the way that stars evolved. This hydrostatic equilibrium that applies at every point within a star creates a stable situation where the rate of evolution is governed by mass.

Transcript: A human lifetime is a blink of an eye compared to the age of the stars which can be hundreds of millions or billions of years. So how is it possible for astronomers to understand the life process of a star, to see their birth, death, and life? Consider an analogy of an intelligent ant living in a forest who lives a very short time but observes the diversity of nature. For instance, there are tall trees and short trees, saplings, fallen logs. Some of the falling logs have been helped by insects to decay back into Earth itself. Could a short living intelligent ant deduce the life cycle of the forest from sapling up to tall tree, to fallen log, and then back to Earth by observations over a short period of time? This is the situation astronomers find themselves in.
