We're experimenting and would love to hear from you!In this episode of 'Discover Daily', we explore groundbreaking developments in AI, cryptocurrency regulation, and early universe water formation. AI startup Anthropic has reached a staggering $61.5 billion valuation after closing a $3.5 billion funding round, showcasing impressive growth with an annual recurring revenue of $800 million. The company's latest AI model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, introduces innovative 'hybrid reasoning' capabilities, pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has made a landmark decision, declaring that meme coins generally do not constitute securities under federal law. This significant shift in cryptocurrency regulation has far-reaching implications for the industry, though it comes with important caveats and has sparked debate among regulators. Our main story delves into a revolutionary study published in Nature Astronomy, suggesting that water may have first formed in the universe just 100 to 200 million years after the Big Bang. This discovery challenges our understanding of cosmic evolution and implies that conditions for life may have existed far earlier than previously thought. The research opens up exciting new avenues for investigating the potential for early habitable environments and the emergence of life in the universe. From Perplexity's Discover Feed:https://www.perplexity.ai/page/anthropic-reaches-61-5b-valuat-goxeBd89TI6.SXIGLTUGUQ https://www.perplexity.ai/page/sec-says-meme-coins-are-not-se-yn4ZON0XRmyFivwgjKtRuQhttps://www.perplexity.ai/page/early-universe-may-have-had-wa-fUgTawHmSWGvtriYXLndsA**Introducing Perplexity Deep Research:**https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-perplexity-deep-research Perplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. We're experimenting and would love to hear from you!In this episode of ‘Discover Daily', we explore groundbreaking developments across technology and space. OpenAI unveils its first comprehensive rebrand, introducing a refined blossom logo, custom OpenAI Sans typeface, and a nature-inspired color palette under the leadership of their design team. We also delve into Apple's exciting ELEGNT project, a revolutionary lamp-like robotic companion prototype that could hit markets by 2027.Our main story focuses on an astronomical breakthrough that's reshaping our understanding of the universe. The Quipu superstructure, discovered by Dr. Hans Böhringer and his team at the Max Planck Institute, spans an astounding 1.3 billion light-years and contains 200 quadrillion solar masses. This cosmic giant is part of a newly identified group of five superstructures that collectively house nearly half of all known galaxy clusters in their observed region. The massive discovery challenges existing cosmological models and could revolutionize our understanding of dark matter, gravity, and universal structure formation. Named after the ancient Incan record-keeping system, Quipu's vast size and complex shape are forcing scientists to reconsider theories about how matter clusters at the largest scales, potentially leading to groundbreaking revisions in our understanding of cosmic evolution and structure formation. From Perplexity's Discover Feed: https://www.perplexity.ai/page/openai-rebrands-olNMmsxrR2e8pTl74GelVA https://www.perplexity.ai/page/apple-prototypes-tabletop-robo-B0ohlEMNRXei655eYqfigg https://www.perplexity.ai/page/largest-structure-in-universe-kX97crgVQuKyHnGt6dR4MQ Perplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. With Prof. Caleb Scharf (Columbia University)Is humanity on Earth special or unexceptional? Extraordinary discoveries in astronomy and biology have revealed a universe filled with endlessly diverse planetary systems, and a picture of life as a phenomenon intimately linked with the most fundamental aspects of physics. But just where these discoveries will lead us is not yet clear. We may need to find a way to see past the mediocre status that Copernicus assigned to us 500 years ago. Dr. Scharf helps us to come to grips with the implications of some of the latest scientific research, from the microscopic to the cosmic.Caleb Scharf is Director of Astrobiology at Columbia University in New York and is considered one of the leading scholars at the interface of astronomy and biology. He is the author of the popular book Gravity's Engines, which was the basis of the BBC/Science Channel documentary, Swallowed by a Black Hole. His textbook, Extrasolar Planets and Astrobiology won the 2011 Chambliss Prize. His book, The Copernicus Complex, was published by Scientific American/Farrar, Straus and Giroux; Recorded October 2014

“We may indicate that the [ankh] is a part of the concept complexes of the archetypical mind, the circle indicating the magic of the spirit, the cross indicating that nature of manifestation which may only be valued by the losing. Thus the crux ansata is intended to be seen as an image of the eternal in and through manifestation and beyond manifestation through the sacrifice and transformation of that which is manifest” (Law of One, Session 93.22).
Explores angels from Judeo-Christian and Islamic faiths, Hinduism and Buddhism, the beliefs of ancient Egypt, Yezidism, and Zoroastrianism as well as what Theosophists, Kabbalists, Sufi masters, Eastern gurus, and modern mystics like Edgar Cayce have recounted about angels From the divine messengers of Western traditions to the devas of Eastern traditions to the meleks and spirit beings found along the Silk Road, angels are one of the unifying themes of theology worldwide. But what is an angel, and why do they contact us, believers and nonbelievers alike? In this in-depth study into the mystery and purpose of angels, Normandi Ellis looks at the angelic dimensions of spiritual traditions around the world—from the ancient past to present day. She explores well-known angels from Judeo-Christian and Islamic faiths, the Hindu devata and Buddhist spirit beings, the spirit beings of ancient Egypt, the Peacock Angel of Yezidism, and the yazatas of Zoroastrianism. She compares angelic visions from medieval Christians like Thomas Aquinas and John of Damascus with what Theosophists, kabbalists, Sufi masters, Eastern gurus, and modern mystics like Edgar Cayce have recounted about angels. She looks at dark and fallen angels and their role in the grand cosmological plan. Quoting from sacred traditions, narrative myth, and contemporary angelic encounters, including her own personal interactions with angels, the author clarifies the divergent aspects of angelic beliefs but also reveals the common points shared by all traditions. Ellis shows how, in whatever guise they appear, angels are messengers. She explains that angels are beings of light consciousness, part of the universal life force that connects all beings. And not only are angels actively helping in our planet's cosmic evolution, they also help us see our own place in the cosmic plan.

Nan is an ethnobotanist by passion and trade, and she has had a focus on the native grapes of North America over the last few years. What we might call “native” grapes, Nan refers to as “crop wild relatives.” She talks about the importance of preserving the biodiverse gene pool contained in these crop wild relative, and the work she has helped with to catalog and inventory these North American vines. One of the most famous incidents demonstrating the importance of the biodiversity contained within crop wild relatives is the rescue of the entire European wine industry from phylloxera. The term “crop wild relatives” of course refers to the genetic ancestors of our current domesticated wine crops. But by the time Nan gets done explaining the process of domestication from an evolutionary perspective, you may begin to think of that term in a different way. You may begin to step away from your human-centric perspective and see yourself as a relative of the grapevines that you tend. This idea was introduced to me, actually, on a podcast called The Land You're On, which I highly recommend. It's a podcast that interviews members of the Onondaga and other nations of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois, Confederacy… the oldest currently functioning democracy on earth, and the inspiration for our current society here in the US and other western democracies. If you've heard of the three sisters in gardening and farming – corn, beans, and squash – this came from the people of the Haudenosaunee. Like strawberries? You can thank these folks for those as well. And in one of the episodes about an incredible living library of seeds, an Onondaga Seedkeeper talks about how her culture sees food as a relative. The crops collaborate with the people who farm them to help each other survive, have sovereignty, and provide for 7 generations to come. If you're going to listen to just one episode from this podcast, let it be this one… I never would have thought that a seed bank could make me cry, but wow. And I began to think about how I could see wine as a relative. What would that mean? How would I work differently with vines? How would I work with fermentations if I took this perspective? Nan and I talk about a presentation she created which is one of the most unique and impactful combinations of science and psychology that I've seen. Nan sees wine, grapevines, and everything from an evolutionary standpoint. And like many of you, and myself, cares deeply about what humans are doing to the environment. Because of this, she partnered with a local organization dedicated to mindfulness – imaginebeingwell.org - to explain the Cosmic Evolution Story and how this helps deal with eco-anxiety. I've definitely experienced eco-anxiety, and I found Nan's presentation to be one of the most helpful things I've ever seen, which actually speaks to me from a scientific perspective that I found refreshing and more compelling than many other things I've seen. We only touch on a small part of her presentation here, but Nan has generously allowed me to post the entire presentation on her episode page at BeyondOrganicWine.com. Also at BeyondOrganicWine.com you'll find a link to Nan's talk about the importance of native grapes, and you can learn more about Nan and her other projects at: Ethnobot.org and on Instagram at @successionalforest Enjoy! On the cosmic evolution of AGN obscuration and the X-ray luminosity function: XMM-Newton and Chandra spectral analysis of the 31 3 deg ^2 Stripe 82X by Alessandro Peca et al. on Wednesday 23 November We present X-ray spectral analysis of XMM and Chandra observations in the 31.3 deg$^2$ Stripe-82X (S82X) field. Of the 6181 X-ray sources in this field, we analyze a sample of 2937 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with solid redshifts and sufficient counts determined by simulations. Our results show a population with median values of spectral index $Gamma=1.94_{-0.39}^{+0.31}$, column density log$,N_{mathrm{H}}/mathrm{cm}^{-2}=20.7_{-0.5}^{+1.2}$ and intrinsic, de-absorbed, 2-10 keV luminosity log$,L_{mathrm{X}}/mathrm{erg,s}^{-1}=44.0_{-1.0}^{+0.7}$, in the redshift range 0-4. We derive the intrinsic fraction of AGN that are obscured ($22leqmathrm{log},N_{mathrm{H}}/mathrm{cm}^{-2}43$. This work constrains the AGN obscuration and spectral shape of the still uncertain high-luminosity and high-redshift regimes (log$,L_{mathrm{X}}/mathrm{erg,s}^{-1}>45.5$, $z>3$), where the obscured AGN fraction rises to $64pm12%$. We report a luminosity and density evolution of the X-ray luminosity function, with obscured AGN dominating at all luminosities at $z>2$ and unobscured sources prevailing at log$,L_{mathrm{X}}/mathrm{erg,s}^{-1}>45$ at lower redshifts. Our results agree with evolutionary models in which the bulk of AGN activity is triggered by gas-rich environments and in a downsizing scenario. Also, the black hole accretion density (BHAD) is found to evolve similarly to the star formation rate density, confirming the co-evolution between AGN and host-galaxy, but suggesting different time scales in their growing history. The derived BHAD evolution shows that Compton-thick AGN contribute to the accretion history of AGN as much as all other AGN populations combined. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.08030v2

On the cosmic evolution of AGN obscuration and the X-ray luminosity function: XMM-Newton and Chandra spectral analysis of the 31 3 deg ^2 Stripe 82X by Alessandro Peca et al. on Monday 17 October We present X-ray spectral analysis of XMM and Chandra observations in the 31.3 deg$^2$ Stripe-82X (S82X) field. Of the 6181 unique X-ray sources in this field, we select and analyze a sample of 2937 candidate active galactic nuclei (AGN) with solid redshifts and sufficient counts determined by simulations. Our results show an observed population with median values of spectral index $Gamma=1.94_{-0.39}^{+0.31}$, column density log $N_H/rm{cm}^{-2}=20.7_{-0.5}^{+1.2}$ ($21.6_{-0.9}^{+0.7}$ considering upper limits) and intrinsic, de-absorbed, 2-10 keV luminosity log $L_X/rm{erg,s}^{-1}=44.0_{-1.0}^{+0.7}$, in the redshift range 0-4. Correcting for observational biases, we derive the intrinsic, model-independent, fraction of AGN that are obscured ($22leqrm{log},N_H/rm{cm}^{-2}43$. This work constrains the AGN obscuration and spectral shape of the still uncertain high-luminosity and high-redshift regimes (log $L_X/rm{erg,s}^{-1}>45.5$, $z>3$), where the obscured AGN fraction rises to $64pm12%$. The total, obscured, and unobscured X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) are determined out to $z=4$. We report a luminosity and density evolution of the total XLF, with obscured AGN dominating at all luminosities at $z>2$ and unobscured sources prevailing at log $L_X/rm{erg,s}^{-1}>45$ at lower redshifts. Our results agree with the evolutionary models in which the bulk of AGN activity is triggered by gas-rich environments and in a downsizing scenario. Cosmic evolution of grain size distribution in galaxies using the ν^2 GC semi-analytic model by Ryu Makiya et al. on Wednesday 12 October We investigate the cosmological evolution of interstellar dust with a semi-analytical galaxy formation model ($nu^2$GC), focusing on the evolution of grain size distribution. The model predicts the statistical properties of dust mass and grain size distribution in galaxies across cosmic history. We confirm that the model reproduces the relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity in the local Universe, and that the grain size distributions of the Milky Way (MW)-like sample become similar to the so-called MRN distribution that reproduces the observed MW extinction curve. Our model, however, tends to overpredict the dust mass function at the massive end at redshift $zlesssim 0.8$ while it reproduces the abundance of dusty galaxies at higher redshifts. We also examine the correlation between grain size distribution and galaxy properties (metallicity, specific star formation rate, gas fraction, and stellar mass), and observe a clear trend of large-grain-dominated, small-grain-dominated, and MRN-like grain size distributions from unevolved to evolved stages. As a consequence, the extinction curve shapes are flat, steep, and intermediate (MW-like) from the unevolved to evolved phases. At a fixed metallicity, the grain size distribution tends to have larger fractions of small grains at lower redshift; accordingly, the extinction curve tends to be steeper at lower redshift. We also predict that supersolar-metallicity objects at high redshift have flat extinction curves with weak 2175 AA bump strength. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.06176v1
In this talk, astrobiologist Charles Lineweaver discusses the history of life on Earth and what we can deduce from our understanding of the universe about the existence and history of life elsewhere. He recounts the ongoing discovery of large numbers of exoplanets -- planets orbiting other stars -- and what we can learn from the varieties of planets that are being found. He challenges us to think about what parts in the development of intelligent life on Earth would necessarily happen elsewhere and what parts might be unique to our planet. Charles Lineweaver is an honorary associate professor at the Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics and Research School of Earth Science. His research areas include exoplanetology (the statistical analysis of exoplanets and their habitability), cosmobiology (using our new knowledge of cosmology to constrain life in the Universe) and the study of cancer. He recently completed an online video course at: arewealone.us. Dr. Lineweaver earned a BA in history from the State University of New York at Binghamton, an MA in English from Brown University, a BS is physics from Ludwig Maximillian's University in Munich, and a PhD in physics at the University of California, Berkeley in 1994.
Jay Seegert asks the most important question, "What is our starting point?" What is the primary axiom? How did life, our earth, and the universe begin? He puts the physics of the Big Bang to the test and examines whether or not a case for God can be made. Stay tuned!

Astronomer Jill Tarter is director of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute's Center for SETI Research, and also holder of the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI. She led Project Phoenix, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems, using telescopes in Australia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. While no clearly extraterrestrial signal was found, this project was the most comprehensive targeted search for artificially generated cosmic signals ever undertaken. Tarter serves on the management board for the Allen Telescope Array, a massive instrument that will eventually include 350 antennas, and that has already increased the speed and the spectral range of the hunt for signals by orders of magnitude. With the 2009 TED Prize, Tarter launched SETILive, a citizen project that allowed volunteers to stream live data from the array and help with the search. Tarter's life work is chronicled in the book, Making Contact: Jill Tarter and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. She's deeply committed to the education of future citizens and scientists. Beyond her scientific leadership at NASA and the SETI Institute, Tarter has been actively involved in developing curriculum for children. She was Principal Investigator for two curriculum development projects funded by NSF, NASA, and others. One project, the Life in the Universe series, created 6 science teaching guides for grades 3-9. The other project, Voyages Through Time, is an integrated high school science curriculum on the fundamental theme of evolution in six modules: Cosmic Evolution, Planetary Evolution, Origin of Life, Evolution of Life, Hominid Evolution and Evolution of Technology. The symbolism in the Bible has definite and exact meanings, but to see them you need to know Kabbalah, Alchemy, and the Hebrew letters. The four creatures of Ezekiel represent specific forces within nature and within us, and are synthesized in the sphinx, the four gospels of the New Testament, and the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Like how Columbus used astrophysics to exploit power, why E = mc2 gave us atomic bombs, who the first trillionaire will be, why physics stops Neil from having normal fights with his wife and more. Paul elaborates on how the hylomorphic principle, if anything, fits quantum physics better than it fit the world the medievals knew. Bill asks whether the worldview of people of faith is too rigid, while that of the secular masses is too loose. Paul wonders what "shades of gray" really means, and points out that even though the materialist worldview has become harder and more dogmatic, 20th century physics really exploded its scientific foundation. This epsiode brought to you by Arthur Compton's Freedom of Man and Stephen Barr's Modern Physics and Ancient Faith.

The 2015 Wetton Lecture delivered by Professor Carlos Frenk Cosmology confronts some of the most fundamental questions in the whole of science. How and when did our universe begin? What is it made of? How did galaxies and other structures form? There has been enormous progress in the past few decades towards answering these questions. For example, recent observations have established that our universe contains an unexpected mix of components: ordinary atoms, exotic dark matter and a new form of energy called dark energy. Gigantic surveys of galaxies reveal how the universe is structured. Large supercomputer simulations recreate the evolution of the universe and provide the means to relate processes occurring near the beginning with observations of the universe today. A coherent picture of cosmic evolution, going back to a tiny fraction of a second after the Big Bang, is beginning to emerge. However, fundamental issues, like the identity of the dark matter and the nature of the dark energy, remain unresolved.

A history of all the root races of the Earth, incuding the Polar, Hyperborean, Lemurian, Atlantean, and Aryan races. Evolution is a law of nature that applies to the development of the soul (consciousness), but not in the way most people realize. Furthermore, the Bible explains the previous races and ages (Atlantena, Lemurian, and more), and about fallen angels and the existence of demons, but one has to know Hebrew and Kabbalah to understand. This course reveals the essential clues to understand how we got to where we are now. Learn about the reality of the development of the soul as it is hidden in the Kabbalah, the Bible, the Hebrew letters, and the Zohar.

Point of Inquiry is on a short hiatus right now as we transition to a new podcast team. In the meantime, enjoy these classic episodes from the POI archives, featuring Neil deGrasse Tyson, Bill Nye, Susan Jacoby, and other luminaries in the science and secularism movement. Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of America’s leading spokespersons for science. The research areas he focuses on are star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. In addition to many scholarly publications, Dr Tyson is one of America’s most respected science writers, and he writes a monthly column for Natural History magazine simply titled the “Universe.” Among his eight books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and also Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. His most recent book is Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries. He is the on-camera host of PBS-NOVA’s program ScienceNow, which explore the frontiers of all the science that shapes our understanding of our place in the universe. He is the first occupant of the Frederick P. Rose Directorship of the Hayden Planetarium in Manhattan, where he also teaches. In this conversation with D.J. Grothe, Neil deGrasse Tyson examines various approaches to informal science education, his experiences teaching science through pop-culture media outlets, and controversies regarding science popularization. He explains his views on the implications of science for religious belief, questioning the strategy of science educators who seem to equate science and atheism. He also recounts the direct influence of Carl Sagan on his professional development.

Transcript: The universe has not always been the way it is now. The early universe was smaller, hotter, and denser. In fact in the universe soon after the big bang, matter was too hot to exist in the normal, neutral form. Atoms and molecules did not exist, and even after this period, the only elements that could exist were hydrogen and the helium created in cosmic nucleosynthesis by the universe itself plus trace amounts of lithium and beryllium. Thus in the very early universe, there were essentially no heavy elements, so no possibility to form planets, and no possibility of carbon chemistry. The first stars formed a few hundred million years after the big bang. The time is still uncertain, and this epoch has not yet been directly observed by astronomers. However, as soon as the first stars and galaxies formed, heavy elements began to be produced in the cycle of star birth and death: fusion in the cores of massive stars, ejection of the elements in supernovae, and winds from massive stars into the interstellar medium where they subsequently could be part of a next generation of stars. Thus over cosmic time, the heavy element abundance in the universe has steadily increased, and in that sense life can become more likely as time progresses. But not all parts of the universe are created equal. Elliptical galaxies form early, have relatively low rates of star formation, and low heavy element abundances whereas spiral galaxies have active star formation and higher heavy element abundances. So we might imagine that spiral galaxies are more likely galactic sites for life to occur.
Transcript: The big bang model predicts that the universe is evolving, that it was smaller, hotter, and denser in the past. Astronomers would like to test this basic prediction. One test involves spectral lines in distant quasi-stellar objects or quasars where the cosmic microwave background radiation excites the line. Observations and comparisons at different redshifts show that the temperature of the microwave background radiation, which is currently 2.7 Kelvin, was indeed hotter in the past, varying as one plus the redshift as predicted by the big bang model. Also, there are many observations to show that galaxies themselves have evolved, being smaller and having been assembled from pieces so they grow bigger and brighter with time and redshift to the present day. The universe is indeed evolving.

Investigating X-ray luminous galaxy clusters at high redshift (z>~1) provides a challenging but fundamental constraint on evolutionary studies of the largest virialized structures in the Universe, the baryonic matter component in form of the hot intracluster medium (ICM), their galaxy populations, and the effects of the mysterious Dark Energy. The main aim of this thesis work is to establish the observational foundation for the XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP). This new generation serendipitous X-ray survey is focused on the most distant galaxy clusters at z>1, based on the selection of extended X-ray sources, their identification as clusters and redshift estimation via two-band imaging, and their final spectroscopic confirmation. As a first step, I have analyzed 80 deg^2 (469 fields) of deep XMM-Newton archival X-ray data with a new pipeline processing system and selected almost 1000 extended sources as galaxy cluster candidates, 75% of which could be identified as clusters or groups at z

Jill Tarter holds the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, CA where she also serves as director of the Center for SETI Research. She served as Project Scientist for NASA’s SETI program, and has conducted a number of observational programs at radio observatories worldwide. Since funding for NASA’s SETI program was cut in 1993, she has served in a leadership role to secure private funding to continue the the exploratory science. Her work has brought her wide recognition in the scientific community, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Aerospace, two Public Service Medals from NASA, and many other awards. She was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2002 and a California Academy of Sciences Fellow in 2003. In 2004, Time Magazine named her one of the Time 100 most influential people in the world, and in 2005 Tarter was awarded the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization at Wonderfest, the San Francisco Festival of Science. Tarter is very involved in childhood science education: In addition to her leadership at NASA and SETI Institute, she has spearheaded the creation of two curriculum development projects funded by NSF, NASA, and others. The first, the Life in the Universe series, created 6 science teaching guides for grades 3-9, which were published in the mid nineties. Her second project, Voyages Through Time, is an integrated high school science curriculum on the fundamental theme of evolution in six modules: Cosmic Evolution, Planetary Evolution, Origin of Life, Evolution of Life, Hominid Evolution and Evolution of Technology. In this conversation with D.J. Grothe, Jill Tarter discusses the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe, why the search for it is important, the implications for religious belief of such a discovery, recent cuts in science funding, the emerging field of astrobiology, and the need for teaching evolution in the public schools, among other subjects. She also talks about the new Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life in the Universe, which was announced earlier in the week. Also in this episode, Tom Flynn asks Did You Know? about the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence.
Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of America's superstars of science, focuses his research on star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. In addition to dozens of scholarly publications, Dr. Tyson is one of America's most eloquent and popular science writers. He has a monthly column for Natural History magazine simply titled the "Universe." Among his seven books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and also Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS-NOVA series of the same title, in which Dr. Tyson serves as the on-camera host. Beginning Fall 2006, he will appear as the on-camera host of PBS-NOVA's program ScienceNow, which will explore the frontiers of all the science that shapes our understanding of our place in the universe. Dr. Tyson is the recipient of seven honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid "13123 Tyson". On a lighter note, a few years ago he was voted "Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive" by People Magazine. In this wide-ranging interview with DJ Grothe, Dr. Tyson discusses new developments this week in astronomy which may increase the count of planets in the solar system, reveals why he believes it is likely that there is life elsewhere in the universe, examines Intelligent Design and what he calls "stupid design," eloquently explains how parents may foster an appreciation for science in children, and also discusses science education's real-world economic impact for America. Also in this episode, DJ and Lauren Becker discuss the new collaborative effort between the Center for Inquiry and the State University of New York called Science and the Public.
