TCW Podcast Episode 231- Street Fighter 2 Street Fighter 2 is often credited with reviving the arcade scene in the early 1990s. While it successfully brought back the must-have arcade game mentality, it couldn't stop the overall decline of arcades. The original Street Fighter was influenced by many sources, including Bruce Lee's Game of Death, anime like Fist of the North Star, and Space Battleship Yamato. With the rise of beat 'em ups following Double Dragon, Capcom released Street Fighter 89, later renamed Final Fight. Taking lessons from Final Fight, Street Fighter 2 introduced an expanded roster, streamlined special moves, combos, and more. Its popularity led to the release of two enhanced versions: Championship Edition and Turbo. Come explore the history and influences of this legendary game! Text us and say hello! In episode 9 of "Backwards Compatible: A Generation 'S' Podcast," Lou makes his triumphant return as we jump into the world of "Street Fighter II," focusing on "Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers" for the SNES—the definitive way to experience this iconic fighter on home consoles. We explore the various iterations of the game, discussing how each version contributed to its legacy, but we give special attention to "Super Street Fighter II" for its refined mechanics and expanded roster of fighters. As we dissect what made "Street Fighter II" a cornerstone of the 2D fighting genre in the early '90s, we share our favorite characters, stages, and notably, the unforgettable stage music that remains unmatched in its energy and ability to set the tone for battle. We also delve into why subsequent entries like "Street Fighter III" and the "Alpha" series didn't capture the same widespread allure, despite their technical advancements and deeper mechanics. As always, we sprinkle in some pop culture notes from July 1993 to paint a full picture of the era when "Street Fighter II" was king of the arcade and home console scene. Again, another film taking liberties with the source material. Some of it works, most does not. Raul Julia hams it up like no other with his portrayal of M. Bison"Street Fighter: The Movie" is a 1994 action film based on the popular video game franchise. The film follows Colonel Guile, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, as he leads an international team of street fighters to rescue hostages from the evil warlord General M. Bison, portrayed by Raul Julia. The story unfolds on the fictional Shadaloo Island, where Bison plans to rule the world with his army. The film incorporates characters from the Street Fighter video game series, such as Chun-Li, Ryu, and Ken. Despite mixed reviews, the film has gained a cult following over the years for its campy and over-the-top portrayal of the iconic video game characters.Intro for the shopSupport the show'Beavis and Butt-head' Cover art created by Joe Crawford
