There would be no Bay Area rap without Too $hort - facts! For this special 100th episode, Dregs One sits down with $hort to talk about his legendary impact on West Coast hip-hop and some deep dives into the origins of Bay rap, drug kingpins investing in music, the emergence of E-40, Mac Dre, and 2pac, and much more. Too $hort also talks about the new "Freaky Tales" movie in theaters now, his upcoming (and possibly last) albums, and how he spoke his player lifestyle into existence. --Thank you to this episode's sponsors:Local Legend Labs: https://locallegendlabs.com - @locallegendlabs on IGReese Da Beast: https://www.unitedmasters.com/a/reecedabeast - @1officialreesedabeast on IGSip and Spray Sacramento: @_professionaladvice @cafecolonial916 on IG--History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aaOnline Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlAInstagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_oneTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_oneTwitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_oneFacebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone41500:00 Intro01:45 Freaky Tales16:56 Bay Area players24:09 Freaky Tales movie27:45 Moving to SF & Oakland36:08 Independent rap in the 80s52:29 First rappers on the West Coast1:02:12 Shows and tours1:08:57 Putting on other rappers1:18:49 Mac Dre1:24:06 2pac1:31:55 Biggie, East Coast / West Coast1:41:48 Haters, “I Ain't Trippin”1:45:50 The Luniz “Playa Hata”1:54:12 “It's over for Too $hort”2:00:24 New albums

Bay Area, 一度被称为 “the land of pimps and Panthers”. Bay Area hip-hop is “the product of pimps and hustlers just as much as activists and intellectuals”. Bay Area in the ‘80s1981 年第一张 Bay Area Rap record “Super Rat” by Motorcycle Mike ;奥克兰最有代表性和影响力的嘻哈音乐人 Too Short 从 1981 年开始就通过自制磁带在街头累积了信用和关注,他的前三次发行来自独立厂牌 75 Girls Records,1987 年的 “Born to Mack”开始由专业大厂牌发行,同时期成立了自己的 Dangerous Crew 和厂牌 Dangerous Music,音乐中的低音已经有了特点,这也是他将 pimp 作为自己代表形象的开始,在当时的嘻哈场景中十分稀有,1988 年 “Life Is … Too Short” 制作开始成熟;Bay Area 标志声音的标志制作人 Ant Banks,“肥”感的低音,Daft Punk 还表示受到了他的影响;*更正信息:Spice 1 的“Let it Be Known”官方发行时间为 1991 年。 ‘90s 的街头音乐 Mobb Music 和 P-Funk 传承Bay Area 地区突出低音的,与同时期 West Coast G-Funk 有区别的 Hip Hop 风格 Mobb Music;Too Short 我简直太喜欢了,在还没有 G-Funk 这个说法时(或没有形成一种普遍共识的风格),专辑 “Short Dog's In The House”(1990) 已经体现出由 P-Funk 继承而来的风格,并且十分清新,”Shorty The Pimp”(1992), “Get In Where You Fit In”(1993) 同样出色,我们都认为他的贡献是被低估的,并且 Too Short 还是最早以 Pimp 形象作为 rap persona 的老哥之一,这个形象持续而深入人心;关于 Pimp Culture 的 Newsletter 回顾: 关于皮条客文化的思考,以及 2024 年女性视角的补充成立于 1987 年的 Digital Underground 初始风格带有强烈的 Black Panther Party 政治意识,但核心人物 Shock G 认为当时已经有硬核的 N.W.A 和 Public Enemy 了,就将风格转换为更加幽默胡闹,诞生了 Humpty Hump 这个经典形象。 “Sex Packets”(1990) 是非常浓的 P-Funk 影响,"This Is an E.P. Release” (1991) 的 “Same Song”中正式介绍了家族成员——当时还是 Digital Underground 的 Rodie 的 2Pac. 还推荐 “Future Rhythm”(1996) 这张独立发行专辑(有两首歌出现在我们都很喜欢的喜剧电影 “Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood”), “The Lost Files”(1999) 合集, “Who Got the Gravy?”(1998);2Pac 早期还是个快乐 funky 小伙儿,我们都非常喜欢有 Digital Underground 参与的作品;1988 年来自 Vallejo 的 The Click 组合成立,E-40 与兄弟 D-Shot,妹妹 Suga T,表亲 B-Legit 一家子成员,在叔叔 Saint Charles 组织下首次亮相于 EP “The Kings Men” by M.V.P;90s 初开始, The Click 家族,尤其是 E-40 开始成为了 Bay Area 的独特声音之一,抽着说的 flow 对后来的 Bay Area 也有巨大影响,推荐专辑 “In a Major Way”(1995);凶狠且幽默的 Spice 1 从 1992 年的同名专辑开始,保持稳定输出,是一位写词技术高超的 rapper,90s 的作品都获得了高评价,推荐专辑 “197 He Wrote”(1993), 经典全谋杀题材,“Amerikkka's Nightmare”(1994), “1990-Sick”(1995);来自 San Francisco 的 RBL Posse 贡献了草药赞歌 “Don't Give Me No Bammer Weed” (1992 年的 “A Lesson To Be Learned”),RBL 组合有一段已经被遗忘的历史,关于成员之一 Mr.Cee 被残忍错杀的故事,在节目中没有提到,但非常推荐大家了解一下 “A History of RBL Posse with Black C: On Bammer, Mistaken Murders and Lessons Learned”组合 Luniz 第一张的大名曲 “I Got 5 On It”是 Mobb Music 的代表作,最好听的第二张 “Lunitik Muzik”(1997) 首首经典,不仅集结了湾区众多 rapper,与 8Ball & MJG 的合作也很出色,专辑中有当时南方地区的代表制作人 Mike Dean, N.O. Joe 参与制作;组合 3X Krazy 和成员之一 Keak da Sneak 从 90s 一直活跃到 00s Hyphy 时代,与南方制作人也有不少合作;我个人非常喜欢的 Rappin' 4-Tay 在当时的 Mobb 街头音乐场景中展示出稀有的真心内容,推荐专辑 “Don't Fight the Feelin'”(1994);‘90s 其他可以了解的 rapper: Mac Dre(1992 年在监禁时打电话录制的 “Back in da Hood”),Seagram(前三张都是在 Rap-a-lot 发行),Dru Down(皮条的另一代表人物),Mac Mall,Celly Cel,JT the Bigga Figga(Get Low Playaz 兄弟伙,太能出了),这个时期的 Mobb Music 街头场景产出众多,无法一一说道;被称为“The Black Panther of Hip Hop”的 Paris, 始终如一的黑豹子孙,在音乐中坚持表达抗争和强烈的黑人意识,对社会问题和政治进行激烈抨击,他也是一位伟大的制作人,作为导师为 The Conscious Daughters 监制制作,带出了她们成为了日后 Bay Area 女性的榜样;Episode playlist:Too Short - “Oakland”Sly & The Family Stone - “Family Affair”Tower of Power - “What is Hip?”Too Short - “The Ghetto”Too Short - “I'm A Player”2Pac & Digital Underground - “I Get Around”Digital Underground - “On One”E-40 & The Click - “Captain Save A Hoe”Spice 1 - “187 He Wrote”RBL Posse - “Don't Give Me No Bammer Weed”Luniz, 8 Ball&MJG 0 “In My Nature”3X Krazy - “Keep It On The Real”Rappin' 4-Tay - “I'll Be Around”Too $hort - “Never Talk Down “ft. History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 85: Mistah F.A.B. has been at the center of the Bay Area hip-hop scene since he splashed on the scene as the Crown Prince of Hyphy in the early 2000s. Growing up in North Oakland, FAB's parents were in the street life but pushed him towards a different route. This led him to developing his talent as a rapper, putting out his first album "Nig-Latin" through Straight Hits Entertainment with Jazzy Jim and Gary Archer. This eventually led to him catching the attention of Mac Dre, and FAB's debut album "Son of a Pimp" dropped on Thizz Entertainment. This conversation about FAB's early career is like a history of Bay Area rap in itself, touching on artists like Andre Nickatina, The Jacka, Souls of Mischief, Too Short, Messy Marv, and many more. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 05:13 Fab's parents in the street life 14:52 Choosing not to get in the streets 20:10 North Oakland history 24:00 Starting to rap 31:59 Gary Archer & D-Ray 34:09 “Nig Latin” album 38:53 Meeting Mac Dre 46:37 Andre Nickatina 49:40 “Super Sick Wid It” 56:39 “Son of a Pimp” album 58:58 Kanye West, Wake Up Show 1:02:48 “Backpack rap;” Souls of Mischief 1:10:20 The Freestyle King 1:16:12 Freestyle battles 1:21:25 The New Bay & the Hyphy Movement 1:26:54 Messy Marv 1:33:02 Hyphy era hits 1:36:27 Getting banned from KMEL 1:46:07 Ghost Ride It video 1:49:57 The Jacka 1:57:45 Community work --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

In this episode, I open by giving flowers to the Bay Area's own Mac Dre. Twenty years to the day of his untimely death, as well as two years since Takeoff's murder, I discuss why, of all genres, Hip Hop needs to "Change The Game." Then, on back to back nights, Drake pops out at a King's game. One in Atlanta and the next night in Toronto. On a night when Vince Carter's jersey is retired, Drake overshadows the event with words for King's player Demar DeRozan. I give my thoughts on it all and ask why he wasn't supporting his mentor, Lil Wayne. Weezy was in New Orleans at the Lil Weezyana Fest, which featured a Hot Boyz reunion. I tap in at the perfect time to get some jokes off. All that and much more on episode 256 of Unprofessional AF!

In this episode the intro ran long as I celebrated the 22nd anniversary of “Thizzelle Washington” the classic album from the legendary Mac Dre! Then discussion of how listening to an old episode got me out my funk, over the hump, and reminded me to “NEVER GIVE UP”! Then passive aggressive Olympics between Drake and Lebron have me wondering what could've led to the bad break up. Then a repeat feature of Big Sean in the “what you said v.s. what I heard” segment had me clowning. While Sean breaks down over his Covid diagnosis I let you know what I deciphered from it all. All that and more on episode 248 of UNPROFESSIONAL AF!

Slimmy B is 1/4 of the multi-platinum group SOB X RBE. Growing up in Vallejo's Crestside neighborhood, the home of Mac Dre, Slimmy was heavily influenced by Bay Area rap. Shortly after making their first songs in high school, SOB X RBE blew up on a national level. Touring the country and collaborating with artists like Kendrick Lamar and Lil Yachty, the group quickly shot to superstardom. This was short-lived as internal disputes led SOB X RBE to split up. This has not stopped Slimmy's hustle and he has dropped several solo projects over the years. Focusing on music over street politics, Slimmy remains level-headed and determined to continue his success in the rap game. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

Introducing Remember the Time: The Hyphy Movement. In the mid-2000's a sound emerged out of the Bay Area that would overtake the sonic landscape of hip-hop for a brief but impactful period showcasing not only the music, but also the overall culture of the Bay Area. A culture that changed the way the hip-hop nation danced, dressed, spoke, and even drove their cars. The Lil Jon produced, E-40 helmed smash “Tell Me When to Go” accurately summed up the surface of the Hyphy movement as a music and culture, but the origin is much deeper. Without the independent nature of the Bay Area, Hyphy could have never existed. Here, we take a deep dive into a subgenre, a movement, a culture that though short lived, still permeates across the globe to this very day, influencing some of today's top performers.
On November 1, 2004, the hip-hop world was shocked to learn that Bay Area legend Mac Dre was gunned down in Kansas City. Almost 20 years later, there is still no definitive answer as to what led to his death. Using thousands of documents obtained from the KC police department, journalist Donald Morrison conducted a thorough investigation of the facts for his 2021 article, "Who Killed Mac Dre?" On this podcast, Donald reviews his findings and discusses the details around Mac Dre's trip to Kansas City, the shooting, and the rumors that KC rapper Fat Tone was responsible. He also shares his experience witnessing the death of LA superstar Drakeo the Ruler and discusses the parallels between him, Mac Dre, and the long list of other rappers who fell victim to senseless violence. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
In the early 2000s, the underground DVD business was a major conduit of culture. Those documentaries showed the backstory of hip-hop artists and street culture all across the United States. One of the films Hood 2 Hood: The Blockumentary,, also included an early depiction of hyphy culture as I knew it to be-- hyper aggressive. But as the "hyphy movement" spread, the way the culture was shown drastically deviated from the origins of the term. In this episode, filmmaker Aquis "Cash Out Quis" Bryant discusses the era before hyphy went nationwide. Mac Dre's former manager, Chioke "Seaside Stretch" McCoy shares insight on how Dre's murder pushed the culture into the spotlight; and how the industry subsequently took the "hyphy movement" and ran with it. And Rita Forte, a former radio host known as DJ Backside, opens up about the highs of taking the hyphy sound around the world, and the lows of seeing her DJ career come crashing down after bad experience while working for a local radio station.
