This is the table read of Sam In Retrograde written by Sam jarvis (Dollface. Tosh.o). SAM IN RETROGRADE is a weird little comedy about one woman's journey through grief, and her attempt to find herself in the process. More specifically, it's about a girl who starts carrying her dead husband's urn around everywhere and talking to it as if they're still married. Which yes, does affect her relationships with everyone else in her life. As you'd imagine. The project was developed and optioned at CBS Studios with Party Over Here producing, and Bert & Bertie (HAWKEYE, THE GREAT, TROOP ZERO) attached to direct. It was taken out the summer of 2021 and pitched to Hulu, Apple, Paramount+, Showtime, Peacock, FX, Freeform, and HBOMax. While a few execs fought for it, they all ended up passing. And if I recall correctly, Amazon and Netflix passed before hearing a pitch. It was all very cool. The cast for this one is nothing short than spectactular. It includes Katie O'Brien (Teachers), Katrina Davis (Figuring It Out), Julie Brister (Goliath), Suzy Nakamura (Avenue 5, Dead to Me, Dr. Ken), John Ross Bowie (Speechless, Big Bang Theory), Leonard Robinson (Insecure), Ashley Padilla (Son of Zorn) and Andrew Reich with stage directions. We sat down with the writers of Let's Do Lunch, Amanda Lund and Maria Blasucci. Andrew covers so many things with Amanda and Maria including a full description of the food spread at a 90s sitcom taping, the story about how they met, Maria's many appearances on Drunk History, the importance of making your own content, and how to write what's in your heart. Amanda and Maria are Dead Pilots Society regulars that we love having on the show and we're thrilled we got to do their pilot. If you haven't listened to it yet, you must do so now. You're going to love this one. We guarantee it. Joining us today is the incredible comedian known for Comedy Bang! Bang! and Party Over Here, Carl Tart, who tells us all about his non-traditional path to becoming an actor! In this episode, we hear all about how Ashley met Carl in elementary school, why Carl and his mom moved to Los Angeles, what his childhood and family were like, how his mom influenced his career, and much more! We delve into the realization Carl had about his purpose in life before he tells us about his interests in college and what pushed him into comedy. Carl even tells us why he struggled with what people would say about his career choice, why he started doing comedy secretly, how confusing inner voices can be, and his love for improv comedy. The acting and comedy industry is incredibly precarious and exceedingly difficult and today, Carl shares some of the challenges he has faced with us and how he overcame them. We discuss why you need to remove yourself from situations that aren't good for you, why you shouldn't compare yourself to other people, how the writing portion of his career started, and how he deals with external pressure. Carl goes on to tell us all about his incredible sitcom, Grand Crew on NBC, and how it came to be, what brings him joy outside of work, and what advice he would give to people taking a non-traditional career path about not limiting themselves and saying yes! Finally, Carl tells us why he feels like he hasn't changed since becoming successful. You don't want to miss out on this incredible episode! Kelechi Urama staffed off a hot new pilot that had just been optioned. But first she had to drop out of Fordham, transfer to Pittsburgh, and finally move to LA. We'll talk about how she got stuck working admin, used the pandemic to write three new pilots, and got repped off the Black List. I'm Priscilla Nguyen, a pre-WGA writer, and you're listening to NEW SCREENWRITERS ON BREAKING IN.Kelechi Urama is a Nigerian-American screenwriter from Maryland. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Communications, and moved to Los Angeles a year later. In 2020, she wrote a comedy pilot called I NEED BLACK FRIENDS, which got her a manager and an option agreement with Party Over Here and CBS Studios. In 2021, she became a Staff Writer on RUN THE WORLD.

Marques Ray is an actor and comedian who has performed stand up on Conan on TBS as well as Montreal’s Just for Laugh’s Comedy Festival. You may also know him from Fox’s sketch comedy series Party Over Here or as Juan Julio in the ABC series Dr. Ken among other places. Marques’ subtle character choices are nothing short of genius and he is easily one of the funniest performers I know. He would be a great person to talk to about audition advice, career longevity in the entertainment industry, and what it takes to create a truly unique comedic persona. Instead of discussing any of those things, we sat in silence for 25 minutes. Marques used that time to quietly show me funny pictures on the internet.
