Follow & Support Jeff - https://linktr.ee/ThisGuyLikesCrimson This was the 125th episode of my podcast, What are We Doing, and I was excited to have my friend Jeff as my first in-person guest in over two years. I started the show by welcoming Jeff and asking him to discuss Taylor Swift. Jeff praised Taylor's music, highlighting songs like Shake It Off and Blank Space. He was curious what kind of music Taylor would make if she got married, since much of her past work centers on relationships. Jeff imagined scenarios if she and Travis eloped or broke up in 2024, joking that either way it would probably inspire amazing new songs. Transitioning topics, Jeff and I shared our goals for 2024. Jeff mentioned trying to get weight loss surgery to improve his health, training to advance his jiu-jitsu skills, and increasing his content creation. I discussed plans to launch one or two new weekly podcasts alongside my current show, with a goal of ramping up my content output this year. Next we reacted to viral TikTok clips, like the video of the doctor instantly doubting the absurd pregnancy craving excuses of the 1000 Pound Sisters. We also watched chaotic drone footage of homeless encampments, joking about the apparent wedding reception and dance party going on. After that, Jeff and I discussed the endless fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, with Jeff explaining how they can last for years with no defined end. I asked him to help me understand the appeal of playing indefinitely with no resolution in sight. Jeff emphasized it's more about enjoying time with friends than the game itself. I quizzed Jeff on pop culture trivia, admitting I was relying entirely on my memory for the answers. Jeff aced easy questions but struggled to name all of Kim and Kanye's kids, only recalling their daughter North West. Neither of us could even remember all of Michael Jackson's children. As we wrapped up, Jeff thanked me for having him on the show and encouraged listeners to keep tuning in. I closed out expressing appreciation for Jeff coming on the podcast and reminding everyone where to find me online. It was a fun, wide-ranging chat showcasing Jeff's humor and our natural chemistry. I was grateful to provide a relaxed platform for him to share his takes on Taylor Swift, jiu-jitsu, viral videos, and more. What would you do if you were convicted of a gruesome crime you didn't commit? Now imagine serving 16 years of your life for that crime, all the while having to fight against the current of a system that is not only indifferent, but often malicious? You could be furious, frustrated, and fall into a habit of resentment towards the world. Or you could take the admirable path chosen by today's guest, Jeff Deskovic.   Motivated by his own experiences, Jeff is a first-person advocate for justice reform, policy changes, and the wrongfully convicted. His hard work and dedication have resulted in 11 overturned convictions and has successfully pushed for 8 laws to be passed. In today's episode we will look at a normal that's long been accepted, but has seen a growing demand for reform in recent years: the justice system.   Topics covered: Disingenuous police interrogation tactics that result in coerced, faulty confessions Navigating a system full of built-in biases that set many people up to fail Jeff shares his story of wrongful conviction and his journey toward advocacy, legal work, and founding of his own organization to assist the wrongfully convicted Why you shouldn't shirk jury duty Punitive imprisonment vs rehabilitation, and the changes needed within prisons to create a better world   Further Resources: Jeff's Foundation: https://www.deskovicfoundation.org/ It Could Happen to You:  https://itcouldhappen2you.org/ Restorative Justice International:  https://restorativejusticeinternational.com/ Support Jeff's Foundation: https://www.patreon.com/Deskovic “Conviction” Documentary about Jeff: https://www.amazon.com/Conviction-Jeffrey-Deskovic/dp/B08F9CN2XG   Check out our Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/newworldnormal   Click here for the full show notes: https://newworldintentions.com/blogs/podcast-episode/Jeff-Deskovic

“Music is a weapon for me. I want to feel myself bleeding.”Jeff CastelazJeff Castelaz is a big deal in the music biz. A self-made guy who scraped his way from nothing to launch and manage major musical acts, found and run a successful indie label and even serve up president duties at a major record label. All of these things are very impressive and interesting.None of these things are what draw me to Jeff.Jeff is on the show because of his compelling, at times heart-wrenching but incredibly human life story. From his abusive childhood to his struggles with alcohol to the devastating loss of his six-year-old son Pablo to cancer, Jeff is a survivor. A guy who refused to let unbearable pain destroy him, instead leveraging it to access a deeper personal truth, inner strength and sense of purpose.Finding life-saving comfort and solace in both music and cycling as far back as he can remember, Jeff successfully channelled his incredible passion for both into creating a life and legacy of meaning in selfless service to others as an entrepreneur, husband, father and philanthropist. In his most recent post as president of Elektra Records, a division of Warner Music Group, Jeff worked alongside the likes of Ed Sheeran, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kitten, bringing in acts like Fitz and the Tantrums, Saint Motel, The Moth & The Flame and Kaleo.Prior to his post at Elektra, Jeff served as CEO of Dangerbird Records, which he co-founded in 2003. There, he played a key role in the careers of Silversun Pickups, Fitz and The Tantrums and Liam Gallagher's post-Oasis effort, Beady Eye.In 2009 Jeff & his wife Joanne Thraikill tragically lost their son Pablo to cancer just six days after his sixth birthday. From the moment of Pablo's 2008 diagnosis with bilateral Wilms Tumor, a rare form of childhood cancer, Jeff took to the blogosphere to keep friends and family apprised of developments. Sharing his incomprehensible pain with a bold and raw vulnerability, PABLOG! went viral, resulting in a massive and unexpected outpouring of love and support for Pablo and the Castelaz / Thraikill family. Support Jeff and Joanne ultimately channelled into what would become the Pablove Foundation– a pediatric cancer charity which has raised $10 million to date in support of innovative pediatric cancer research and programs for kids and families living with childhood cancer. Each year since its inception, Pablove hosts a charity ride called Pablove Across America. Today — Monday October 5, 2015 — marks the start of Pablove’s seventh annual week-long cycling event in which 40 cyclists will ride from Los Angeles to San Francisco to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer.
