In this wild ride of an episode, we cover everything from neighborhood drama to celebrity scandals and even some questionable dance competitions. Buckle up, because episode 134 is a doozy! First up, I dive into my ongoing battles with my neighbors. From the two-faced twig down the street talking smack about my son to the HOA's pointless mulch mountain blocking the road, I'm reaching my breaking point. I've got some hilarious revenge schemes in the works though, like blasting annoying guitar riffs at 3am. The HOA better watch out, because I'm not afraid to go to war! Next, some shocking celebrity relationship news - Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her husband are splitting up just months after she was released from prison. I speculate this is just Gypsy's pattern of using people until she doesn't need them anymore. Will she find herself in the LGBTQ+ community next? Only time will tell. Speaking of unlikely religious figures, Donald Trump is now hawking a $60 "God Bless the USA" Bible just in time for Easter. This man will slap his name on anything to make a buck, from Bibles to NFTs. I dare churches to start using this MAGA Bible for their services - can you imagine? But the real bombshell this episode is the federal investigation into Sean "Diddy" Combs. With his homes raided, Diddy could be facing some serious charges related to sexual assault and even sex trafficking. This case has Epstein-level potential, and I predict we'll be seeing celebrities' names dragged into it for years to come. Diddy's "no homo" days are over - it's "no Diddy" now. I also weigh in on Dana White's recent awkward podcast appearances. Hosts need to get it together and stop sabotaging their interviews with this MMA kingpin. Maybe what we really need is Dana, Trump, Joe Rogan and the Nelk Boys all on a podcast together, competing to plug their latest money-making schemes. Finally, I react to the wild world of competitive dance on TikTok. When did moms start choreographing routines to Nelly songs? The hip-hop dance finalist videos I stumbled upon have me dying. Well, that's a wrap on this crazy episode! Be sure to like and subscribe so you never miss the insanity. I'll be back next week with more unhinged takes on everything from my battle with the HOA to celebrity antics. Stay tuned and stay wacky - because seriously, what are we even doing? Mystery alert! We've got the curious case of the missing princess. Kate Middleton has been MIA from the public eye since December, and the speculation is running rampant. Kensington Palace claims she had a planned abdominal surgery in January and will be out of sight until March, but the grainy photos, altered images, and vague medical updates have conspiracy theorists in a tizzy. Is she hiding away due to a botched Brazilian butt lift? Did she get terrible bangs and is waiting for them to grow out? Or is she just taking a break after a grueling MLB offseason? The theories are as wild as they are entertaining. Next, we've got the shocking suspension of Murray the Magician from the famed Magic Castle. His crime? Exposing magic tricks online! Murray's viral video, featuring his sexy sidekick wife Dani revealing the secrets behind his tricks, racked up over 50 million views on Facebook. The Academy of Magical Arts was not amused and promptly suspended Murray pending an investigation. Murray argues that the magic community needs to update their outdated rules for the internet age, as anyone can learn these tricks on Amazon. Is the AMA just jealous of Murray's fame, or are they rightfully guarding the sacred secrets of magic? You be the judge! Finally, we dive into the ongoing battle over TikTok's future in the U.S. The House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would force TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a nationwide ban. The clock is ticking, with a September deadline looming if the bill becomes law. TikTok is fighting back with a furious lobbying blitz, urging its millions of users to bombard Congress with calls and even sending their CEO to campaign on the Hill. Will the Senate succumb to the pressure, or will they take a more cautious approach to avoid angering young voters ahead of the elections? The debate over TikTok's potential national security risks is heating up, with officials fearing that the Chinese government could use the app to spy on Americans, push propaganda, or interfere in elections. ByteDance claims they've never received requests for U.S. user data from China and have taken steps to protect Americans' privacy, but many in Washington remain unconvinced. If the ban does go through, TikTok users may have to resort to VPNs to get their daily dose of viral dance challenges and lip-sync battles. As the TikTok drama unfolds, legal experts are already predicting a massive First Amendment battle if the app is ultimately shut down. Previous attempts to ban TikTok have been blocked by federal judges, citing a lack of concrete evidence of the app's alleged national security threats. Will the government be able to make a convincing case this time around, or will TikTok emerge victorious in the courts? Only time will tell. So there you have it, folks! From Kate Middleton's disappearance to rebellious magicians and the looming threat of a TikTok-less existence, this episode of the What are We Doing podcast has it all. Hey everyone, Levi McCurdy here, back with another episode of the What Are We Doing podcast after a brief hiatus thanks to the entire house getting knocked out by the swine flu. Can you believe it? The first pandemic before the actual pandemic! In this episode, I'm diving into my newfound obsession with the Paisano's pizza maker, which has been serving up restaurant-quality pies right in my kitchen. I've also got a genius idea for Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports: "One Bite at Home," where viewers submit their homemade pizza recipes and videos for a chance to be judged by the Barstool crew. Dave, if you're listening, let's make this happen! I couldn't resist poking fun at the State of the Union address and the whole circus that is American politics. From Marjorie Taylor Greene's wild outfit to Biden's questionable claims and the never-ending applause, it's a comedy goldmine. In the entertainment world, I'm dishing on the latest season of Love is Blind and all the jaw-dropping moments that made it unforgettable. Plus, I've got an exclusive new Taylor Swift song, "Kelsea (Taylor's Version)," that I'm debuting right here on the podcast. And get this: Singapore managed to secure Swift for an exclusive performance in Southeast Asia. Talk about a power move! Now, this one's for you, Young Gravy. My fiancée had a wild Instacart adventure involving 600 ounces of gravy and a smooth-talking "King of Gravy Riz." If you want to use the term "gravy raise" in your next song and give a shout-out to the What Are We Doing podcast, be my guest! I also touched on Machine Gun Kelly's latest song and his apparent battle with depression. My solution? Joe Exotic might be the key to turning that frown upside down. To wrap things up, I'm warning you all about China's alleged plan to hack American infrastructure, starting with cell towers and social media. Wake up, people! To start things off, I want to talk about the one and only Taylor Swift. She continues to dominate pop culture, from winning Grammys to dating NFL star Travis Kelce. T-Swift is truly the biggest celebrity in the world right now. Her influence is unmatched. At the recent Grammy awards, Taylor won her 13th Grammy, which is just incredible. She looked stunning and gave a heartfelt acceptance speech announcing her new album that's coming out in April. I'm so excited for more new music from Taylor! No one deserves success more than her. Some other highlights from the Grammys - Miley Cyrus and Amanda Bynes also won their first Grammys which was amazing to see. I'm happy for them. However, Beyonce went home empty-handed again, much to Jay-Z's disappointment. He complained in his speech that his wife keeps getting overlooked. I feel for Beyonce but the numbers don't lie - Taylor Swift is on top when it comes to sales, streams and impact. Moving on to some totally fictional news - I joked that my podcast got a $250 million deal from Spotify, making me the new #1 podcast instead of Joe Rogan. This was just a little fun bit, not actual news! Don't think I'm actually that wealthy now from a Spotify deal. A guy can dream though! I also discussed some of my thoughts on politics and the economy. The government keeps spending billions on other countries while problems persist here at home. I proposed an idea for Taylor Swift to launch a cryptocurrency that could stimulate the US economy. It may sound outlandish but imagine if Swiftcoin became a real thing! Overall, this was a fun episode covering pop culture, music, and some sarcastic commentary on the state of things. As always, I aim to entertain and inform my listeners here on What Are We Doing. Biden's Brewery Blunder Goes Viral - What is Happening?? | What are We Doing Podcast #127

What Are We Doing!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2024 59:47

Hey guys, it's Levi here with another jam-packed episode of What are We Doing. This week we're covering everything from Biden's latest gaffe to mass layoffs at Sports Illustrated and beyond. Let's kick things off with President Biden's speech at a brewery in Wisconsin, where he made a few unfortunate verbal stumbles that had people online questioning his cognitive health. As I'm sure you've seen by now, Biden mumbled something about "brew beered here" that came out as total nonsense. Cue the predictable pile-on from critics saying he's not fit to lead. My take? The man is 80 years old - give him a break! A few tongue twisters don't mean he's unfit for office. At the same time, it's probably best for Biden and the Democrats if he doesn't run again in 2024. Time to pass the torch. Shifting gears, we've got to talk about the ridiculous Oscars snubs for Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. Both were overlooked for their work on the hit movie Barbie, which is up for Best Picture. Total insanity if you ask me. The Academy is clearly biased against comedies and female directors. Not nominating Gerwig for directing is absurd. And Robbie absolutely deserved a Best Actress nod. The Oscars should be ashamed. In wacky crime news, a Pennsylvania man was allegedly stabbed to death by his neighbor for - get this - snoring too loudly. Tragic and bizarre. The neighbor claims the snoring kept waking him up at night, so he went over there and confronted the guy, ending in violence. Senseless violence over something so trivial. My heart goes out to the victim's family. Okay, onto the media world. Big, bad news over at Sports Illustrated where mass layoffs are underway after a licensing dispute. The company that owns SI revoked the license from the publisher, which triggered immediate job cuts. Around 100 staffers were laid off this week across the publisher's properties. Morale is apparently very low at SI. Such a storied brand now struggling to stay afloat in the digital age. I hate to see talented journalists lose their jobs like this. That's just a sample of the stories we'll dive into on this episode. We've also got AI-related updates, the latest with X, and more. So tune in for my unfiltered take on the week's news. And as always, let me know what YOU think! Sound off in the comments or on social media. Watch & Listen to Felix & the JMC Podcast here; https://jmcpod.com/ What's up podcast fam? I'm your host Levi McCurdy and today I had the honor of sitting down with Felix Arroyo, host of the amazing Journeyman Chronicles podcast. This was an epic nearly 2-hour conversation diving deep into Felix's origin story and the trials and tribulations of his podcast journey so far. We started all the way back in 1996, exploring Felix's early days getting into music, writing plays, and discovering his innate passion for storytelling. I was blown away hearing how he taught himself to create music on his own as a teenager, driven by a pure love for hip hop and conscious rap. From writing his own albums to performing live shows at the famous Chameleon Club, Felix gave us an inside look at his come up on the Central PA rap scene. We even got into that iconic green screen "Everything Burns" album cover art that I remembered from back in the day! Beyond music, Felix opened up about his evolution into podcasting and the motivation behind starting the Journeyman Chronicles show. After years stuck in a dead end job, he yearned to take back control of his time and do something aligned with his purpose. Even as he struggled with consistency and technical challenges those first couple years, he persevered with a commitment to keep growing the show. Now in Season 3 he's built real momentum, lining up interviews weeks in advance and attracting more guest outreach than ever before. Our wide ranging conversation touched on everything from the difficulty of balancing passion projects with family life, to the inner belief and work ethic required to make it independently. Felix gave incredible insight into his spiritual grounding and vision to build an inclusive media network spotlighting diverse voices. I could relate to so much of his podcast journey, from scrapping by in the early days to later finding confidence as a host and interviewer. Our transparent talk exemplified the real conversations that podcasting enables between two people genuinely invested in each other's growth. This talk with Felix inspired me tremendously as a fellow podcaster and content creator. I'm pumped for him to keep expanding his reach and honing his skills on the Journeyman Chronicles. His humility, perseverance and care for community shine bright and I know he's destined for big things. I hope you enjoy this candid glimpse into the heart and mind of a talented up and coming podcaster! Please show Felix lots of love by subscribing to his show, and let me know which parts resonated with you the most from our discussion. Follow & Support Jeff - https://linktr.ee/ThisGuyLikesCrimson This was the 125th episode of my podcast, What are We Doing, and I was excited to have my friend Jeff as my first in-person guest in over two years. I started the show by welcoming Jeff and asking him to discuss Taylor Swift. Jeff praised Taylor's music, highlighting songs like Shake It Off and Blank Space. He was curious what kind of music Taylor would make if she got married, since much of her past work centers on relationships. Jeff imagined scenarios if she and Travis eloped or broke up in 2024, joking that either way it would probably inspire amazing new songs. Transitioning topics, Jeff and I shared our goals for 2024. Jeff mentioned trying to get weight loss surgery to improve his health, training to advance his jiu-jitsu skills, and increasing his content creation. I discussed plans to launch one or two new weekly podcasts alongside my current show, with a goal of ramping up my content output this year. Next we reacted to viral TikTok clips, like the video of the doctor instantly doubting the absurd pregnancy craving excuses of the 1000 Pound Sisters. We also watched chaotic drone footage of homeless encampments, joking about the apparent wedding reception and dance party going on. After that, Jeff and I discussed the endless fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, with Jeff explaining how they can last for years with no defined end. I asked him to help me understand the appeal of playing indefinitely with no resolution in sight. Jeff emphasized it's more about enjoying time with friends than the game itself. I quizzed Jeff on pop culture trivia, admitting I was relying entirely on my memory for the answers. Jeff aced easy questions but struggled to name all of Kim and Kanye's kids, only recalling their daughter North West. Neither of us could even remember all of Michael Jackson's children. As we wrapped up, Jeff thanked me for having him on the show and encouraged listeners to keep tuning in. I closed out expressing appreciation for Jeff coming on the podcast and reminding everyone where to find me online. It was a fun, wide-ranging chat showcasing Jeff's humor and our natural chemistry. I was grateful to provide a relaxed platform for him to share his takes on Taylor Swift, jiu-jitsu, viral videos, and more. Episodes like this exemplify the loose, irreverent spirit of my podcast. ************************************************************* ✅GEL BLASTERS - 10% OFF YOUR ORDER https://wawdpod.com/blaster ************************************************************* ✅BLUECHEW - FIRST ORDER FREE Only $5 Shipping https://wawdpod.com/blue ************************************************************* ✅ CUT YOUR PHONE BILL IN HALF - WITH VISIBLE WIRELESS Visible by Verizon is making it EASY to pay for wireless service once again. For those who don't know, Matt Rife is a 28-year-old stand-up comic who recently released his first Netflix special called "Natural Selection." Now Rife has already caught some heat online over an insensitive domestic violence joke he made in the special, but he stirred up even more backlash over the weekend involving an altercation with TikTok mom Bunny Hedaya & her 6-year-old son. Here's the rundown - in Rife's comedy special, he pokes fun at people who believe in astrology. Hedaya's son, who is really into outer space, made a lighthearted reaction video on TikTok pointing out that Rife had gotten his planetary facts wrong. Rife then proceeded to leave a scathing comment directed at the 6-year-old, falsely claiming his mom has an OnlyFans account & that Santa isn't real. Like, what?! This grown man is out here cyberbullying a little kid for literally no reason. All the kid did was correct Rife's astronomy - he didn't even tag Rife in the video! Yet Rife felt the need to personally attack him & his mom in the Instagram comments. It's completely uncalled for. The whole thing blew up online, with TikTokers blasting Rife for his immature behavior. Many pointed out the irony that a stand-up comedian can dish out offensive jokes but can't handle a harmless comment from a child. The controversy comes shortly after Rife's Netflix special dropped, which was already facing criticism over some of its insensitive humor targeting women & domestic violence survivors. So this latest incident definitely isn't doing him any favors. Some folks online have wondered if Rife is just drumming up controversy for the sake of publicity. After all, the famous saying goes "no publicity is bad publicity." But honestly, I think going after kids crosses a line, whether it's intentionally provocative or not. There's enough negativity & cyberbullying online already without targeting innocent children. In other news, exiled conspiracy theorist Alex Jones also made headlines over the weekend after Elon Musk decided to reinstate Jones' previously banned Twitter account. Back in 2018, Twitter had permanently suspended Jones for hate speech & conspiracy theories. But in a Twitter poll on Saturday, Musk asked followers if Jones' account should be restored, & about 70% voted yes. Some experts argue that unbridled free speech tends to give rise to more extreme, radicalized content online. So Jones' return to X will be an important case study to follow in terms of how the site handles misinformation & extremism moving forward. But those are just my thoughts! Let me know what you think about Matt Rife's latest controversy or Alex Jones returning to X. Should Rife face professional consequences for attacking a child online? And does Musk have a point about free speech, or is he just courting controversy? Hit me up on Instagram or Twitter @WhatWeDoinPod & maybe we'll talk more next episode! Alright fam, that wraps up this episode of "What Are We Doing." Stay safe out there & I'll see ya next time! https://twitch.tv/a2ckilla https://instagram.com/a2ckilla Sitting down to record this week's episode of my podcast "What are we Doing," I was thrilled to have my long-time friend and former RadioShack coworker A2CKilla joining me as guest. I've known him for over a decade now, going all the way back to the glory days working behind the counter at our local RadioShack. We always bonded over our love of tech and spent countless hours geeking out over the latest gadgets and devices. Nowadays, A2CKilla has gone all in on pursuing streaming video games on Twitch as his full-time gig. I was excited to pick his brain about that emerging creator economy. But first, I wanted to reminisce on old times and our endless debates comparing Apple and Android products. As an Apple devotee since the early days of iPods and iPhones, I've always defended iOS devices to A2CKilla's pro-Android arguments. He could never convince me that Android phones were superior, though he made some decent points about connectivity and customization options. Still, I valued the simplicity, compatibility, and app ecosystem of my iPhone. One area we dug into was the differences between Lightning cables and USB-C charging. I conceded USB-C seems more universal, but argued Lightning is tried and true, having served me well for over a decade now. I'm fine using an adapter dongle if needed. However, the upcoming adoption of RCS messaging protocols by Apple in 2024 could be a game changer. While I'm wary of opening iMessage's walled garden, I'm intrigued by the promise of improved texting and typed communication across platforms. iMessage is still better, but I'm open to this evolution - even if just to get A2CKilla to stop complaining about green bubbles! Shifting gears, I was able to pick A2CKilla's brain about his experiences jumping into full-time streaming a few years ago. He walked me through the highs and lows, the freedom but uncertainty that comes with staking your career on something as volatile as Twitch subscriptions and follower counts. But his passion shone through and I could tell he was enjoying the ride. In the end, while our tech allegiances may differ, our friendship persists over a decade strong. I appreciated his unique lens as we caught up on life and dissected some meaty tech topics. It made for another great episode that I hope my listeners will enjoy as well! --- ✅THE PERFECT GIFT FOR ANY OCCASION!! Get ready for some salacious celebrity gossip and intriguing ethical debates around relationships and sexuality. In this episode, host Levi McCurdy dives into two eye-catching entertainment news stories that have people talking. The episode opens with accusations made against actor Will Smith by his former assistant, involving graphic claims about Smith's sex life. Then we explore the controversial new reality show created by adult film stars Lena the Plug and Adam22, where the winner gets an x-rated prize. The first story centers around accusations made by Will Smith's former assistant, Brother Bilaal. He claimed to have witnessed Smith engaging in a sexual encounter with actor Duane Martin years ago. Bilaal recounted graphic details of what he allegedly saw between the two men in a dressing room. In response, Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith threatened legal action, bluntly stating "We suin'!" Smith also denied the accusation through his representative, calling it "completely fabricated" and "unequivocally false." Pinkett Smith later said the couple would be taking legal action against what she dubbed a "ridiculous" rumor. She also implied Bilaal may have attempted to extort or blackmail them with the allegation. This story brings up several discussion worthy topics. One is the ethics around spreading unproven accusations, particularly those involving someone's sexuality. There are questions around what details are appropriate to share publicly, even if the claim is factual versus wholly fabricated. Related is a debate around public figures' right to privacy versus the public's perceived right to know intimate details about their lives. There are also conversations around sexuality itself - how much we can ever know or conclude about another person's orientation or private sex life. The story ties into larger social narratives around masculinity, acceptance of sexual fluidity, and judgment of activities deviating from monogamous heterosexual norms. The second story involves adult film stars Lena the Plug and Adam22 announcing a new reality show called "For the Love of Lena." In the show, male contestants will compete for the prize of having a threesome with the married couple. The unconventional grand prize sparks examination around attitudes towards non-monogamy, open relationships and swinging. Earlier this year, Adam22 received extensive criticism when he consented to Lena sleeping with fellow male porn star Jason Luv. This story connects back to double standards around gender; Lena defends their choices, saying one should be free to do whatever makes them happy as long as no one is harmed. The reality show centered on a threesome highlighted attitudes about monogamy, open relationships and female versus male sexual agency. Levi walked through the many compelling themes these tales bring up around relationships, masculinity, consent and judgment of unconventional dynamics. What did you think about this thought-provoking episode? Did any of Levi's perspectives challenge your assumptions or give you a new lens? Hey listeners! In today's episode we're breaking down two of the biggest stories taking over the internet right now. From celebrity relationship speculation to a contentious debate around charity work, this week has been a wild ride online. Let's get right into it! First up is the rumored romance between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. Rumblings started when Swift was spotted at Chiefs games wearing Kelce's jersey and bonding with his mom. But things really heated up when Kelce suddenly appeared in Argentina as Swift kicked off her Eras tour there. Sources confirm Kelce arrived on November 10th, coinciding with Swift's Buenos Aires show which ended up postponed due to weather. Kelce's presence makes it clear he's there to support his potential new girlfriend during her tour. As a longtime Swiftie, this pairing blows my mind! Kelce seems like a party boy while Swift's past relationships have been more lowkey. Is she trying to reinvent her image with this football hunk? Or could this be a strategic PR move? Honestly though, I think this is the real deal. Swift just dropped her new Midnights album so she doesn't need extra hype. The way they've been spotted together seems intimate. After writing extensively about heartbreak, I believe Swift wants something new and Kelce could be the perfect partner. Of course it's still early for this power couple. But if I'm right, expect more public outings and social media posts soon. I'll definitely be watching this situation unfold! Switching gears, MrBeast is facing backlash after launching a charity initiative to build 100 wells supplying clean water in African countries. Though it raised over $300k, some call it insensitive colonialism. The critique is that MrBeast's splashy stunt failed to work with local organizations already addressing the water crisis. Activists say it fuels stereotypes of Africa being "saved" by Westerners. MrBeast brushed off the criticism, saying he doesn't care if it gets him "cancelled." His fans largely defend him for making a tangible impact. In my opinion, there are valid points on both sides. MrBeast's project was a bit self-congratulatory but also benefits disadvantaged communities. The ideal solution would've been collaborating with established local groups. But it's unrealistic to expect perfect wokeness from every creator. While thoughtful criticism is fair, the intense pile-on seems excessive. There's room for growth, not just condemnation. I hope MrBeast engages with the feedback to improve next time. Finally, the beloved giant pandas of the National Zoo have returned home to China after decades charming visitors. Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their cub Xiao Qi Ji were fan favorites, especially during the pandemic when we needed their wholesome content. --- ✅ DUDEROBE - 20% OFF YOUR ENTIRE ORDER https://duderobe.com PROMO CODE: WAWD at CHECKOUT PROMO CODE: WAWD for 20% OFF ✅ CUT YOUR PHONE BILL IN HALF - WITH VISIBLE WIRELESS Visible by Verizon is making it EASY to pay for wireless service once again. What's up everybody! Welcome back to another episode of the What Are We Doing Podcast. I'm your host Levi McCurdy, and this week we have some crazy crypto crime stories to talk about. First up - the founders of SafeMoon have been charged by the Department of Justice with running a massive crypto fraud scheme. According to the indictment, SafeMoon lied to investors by claiming their funds were safely locked in pools to help the token's liquidity. In reality, the founders were secretly diverting tens of millions into their own pockets to fund lavish lifestyles. The SEC has filed similar civil charges against the company. SafeMoon's token was promoted by Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy and grew to have a market cap of over $8 billion in 2021. But it's since come crashing down after the Ponzi scheme was revealed. This is yet another cautionary tale about the risks of crypto speculation. The DOJ agent on the case called it "insatiable greed" - and that seems to be a perfect summary. Our other main story is the conviction of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried on 7 counts of fraud. The verdict came after a wild 4-week trial that gave us a fascinating look inside SBF's corrupt crypto empire. Prosecutors successfully argued that Bankman-Fried secretly misused billions in customer funds from FTX to make risky bets at his hedge fund Alameda Research. The government slammed his actions as one of the biggest financial frauds in history. Some crazy details emerged during the trial. We learned how SBF bought a $40 million penthouse for him and his inner circle in the Bahamas. And how he donated millions in FTX customer funds to political groups. One by one, SBF's close friends like Gary Wang and Caroline Ellison turned on him after pleading guilty themselves. Their testimony showed how Bankman-Fried directed the criminal activity despite publicly claiming innocence. SBF took the very risky move of testifying in his own defense. But he wilted under intense questioning from the prosecution, who used his past words against him. The "math nerd" defense clearly didn't convince the jury. Now he's facing decades in prison when he's sentenced in March. The downfall is just incredible for the guy who was the king of crypto just last year. From a $35 million penthouse to a jail cell - talk about a fall from grace! Let me know what you think about these stories and the justice being served! Is it enough to deter future crypto frauds? Or just the cost of doing business for schemes like this? Looking forward to your feedback. And make sure to hit subscribe for more episodes analyzing the crazy world of crypto each week. WAWD Squad! It's your host Levi McCurdy back with another hilarious episode of the What Are We Doing podcast. Thanks for tuning in and showing some love! This week I'm coming at you live in my butter costume because I'm on a roll with the podcast! Got the boy dressed up as Luigi and my dog Lou Bug rockin' a makeshift Jeff Bezos outfit. We're going big for Halloween this year! But enough goofing around - let's get to the juice! First up, I've gotta dish about Taylor Swift's new romance with NFL stud Travis Kelce. Seeing them together has me shipping harder than Amazon Prime! Get this - Kelce's stats show he averages 99 yards when Taylor attends his games, but only 46 yards when she's absent. Talk about a playoff performance boost! As much as I love Tayvis (yeah, I'm trying to make it happen), Tay's rigorous touring schedule has me worried. Can Kelce's bod handle Swifty's dance routines after his Sunday scrimmages? Not to mention her ex-lover Harry Styles – pretty boy was more concerned with playing dress-up in Taylor's wardrobe than heating up the sheets, if you know what I mean. But enough about Taylor's love life - let's talk about the woman, the myth, the legend herself - Britney Spears! Her new memoir has me gagging with some piping hot tea. Who knew she secretly locked lips with JT during a Mickey Mouse Club sleepover? And her steamy fling with Colin Farrell? Just wild stuff! Of course, I've got plenty of thoughts on the conservatorship drama too. It's clear Jamie Spears abused his power as Britney's father and manager. The whole thing crushed Brit's soul and robbed her creativity, even as the cash rolled in. I'm telling you, that man deserves serious consequences for exploiting his own daughter! Alright WAWD Squad, this next story has me scheming up business ideas with magician Max Major. Ya'll heard of McKamey Manor? It's an extreme haunted house that terrifies people using hypnosis instead of actual torture. Genius! Max and I should open our own hypno-house to traumatize and get rich! I'm seeing dollar signs baby! Okay, switching gears to a viral first date list that's got me firing up hot takes. Who says Applebee's and Olive Garden are off-limits for date #1? Grab those unlimited breadsticks and let the romance flow! But you know I stand firm on hitting the Cheesecake Factory. A first date there proves our compatibility - and leaves room for more brown bread. Whew, another wild ride this week folks! Hey everyone! Buckle up because we've got piping hot tea to spill today - Jada Pinkett Smith just revealed that she and Will Smith have been secretly separated since 2016! I could barely believe it when I heard Jada confess that she and Will have been living totally separate lives for years now. They made the difficult decision to split back in 2016 after nearly 20 years of marriage. But here's the bombshell - they never actually filed for divorce! Jada shared this revelation in a new interview with NBC's Hoda Kotb. She explained that by 2016, she and Will were completely exhausted and stuck in a fantasy about who they thought the other should be. So they divided, but never took the step to legally divorce. This is absolutely wild because Jada and Will always posed together at events and talked about their relationship publicly. So no one had any idea what was going on behind the scenes! It makes you wonder why they hid the separation so long. Jada says they just weren't ready to announce it as they were still evolving their partnership. But 6 years is a long time to keep up appearances, especially when you look at all the drama their marriage has faced publicly. This definitely adds new perspective to Jada's "entanglement" with August Alsina, Will slapping Chris Rock, and more. They went through major controversies as a secretly separated couple! Now this revelation does align with some vague comments Jada has made over the years about complications in her marriage with Will. But she never let on just how official their split was. Of course, we're left with so many questions! Are Will and Jada allowed to date other people? What's their relationship like now after years apart? Do they still talk or see each other? Jada says she made a promise never to divorce. But will they ever file the paperwork to make it official? This has to be a crazy situation for their kids too. Hopefully Jada will share more details in her upcoming memoir and full interview with Hoda Kotb. But I'm dying to know what you guys think! Were you shocked to learn Will and Jada have been secretly broken up since 2016? Do you think they'll ever actually divorce? Let me know in the comments! And get ready, because there is sure to be nonstop coverage of this bombshell revelation in the days to come. Will and Jada's marital status has been turned upside down! --- ✅ CUT YOUR PHONE BILL IN HALF - WITH VISIBLE WIRELESS Visible by Verizon is making it EASY to pay for wireless service once again. Joe Manchin (D-WV): Speaking about Ukraine, first what Putin, Putin's war on Ukraine and Ukraine's determination, resolving the sacrifices they've made for the cause of freedom has united the whole world, that it's united, US Senate and Congress, I think like nothing I've seen in my lifetime. I think we're totally committed to supporting Ukraine, in every way possible, as long as we have the rest of NATO and the free world helping. I think we're all in this together. And I am totally committed as one person to seeing Ukraine to the end with a win, not basically resolving in some type of a treaty. I don't think that is where we are and where we should be. Reporter: Can I just follow up and ask you what you mean by a win for Ukraine? ** Sen. Joe Manchin:** I mean, basically moving Putin back to Russia and hopefully getting rid of Putin. The Ukraine Crisis: Implications for U.S. Policy in the Indo-Pacific May 19, 2022 Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation Witnesses: Charles Edel, Ph.D., Australia Chair and Senior Adviser, Center for Strategic and International Studies Bonny Lin, Ph.D., Director, China Power Project, Center for Strategic and International Studies Tanvi Madan, Ph.D.Director, The India Project, Brookings Institution Dan Blumenthal, Ph.D., Senior Fellow and Director of Asian Studies, American Enterprise Institute Clips 6:57 Tanvi Madan: One implication that is already evident, most visibly in Sri Lanka, is the adverse economic impact. The rise in commodity prices in particular has led to fiscal food and energy security concerns and these, in turn, could have political implications and could create a strategic vacuum. 7:15 Tanvi Madan: A separate and longer term economic impact of the crisis could be renewed goals, perhaps especially in India, for self reliance and building resilience not just against Chinese pressure, but also against Western sanctions. 7:28 Tanvi Madan: The second potential implication of the Russia-Ukraine war could be that Beijing might seek to take advantage in the Indo-Pacific while the world's focus is on Europe, between the Taiwan or the East or South China Sea contingencies. The contingency that would have the most direct impact in South Asia would be further action by the PLA at the China-India boundary, or at the Bhutan-China boundary that could draw in India. This potential for Sino-Indian crisis escalation has indeed shaped Delhi's response to the Russia-Ukraine war. Despite its recent diversification efforts, the Indian military continues to be dependent, if not over dependent, on Russia for supplies and spare parts for crucial frontline equipment. India has also been concerned about moving Moscow away from neutrality towards taking China's side. Nonetheless, there is simultaneously concern that Russia's war with Ukraine might, in any case, make Moscow more beholden to Beijing and also less able to supply India, and that will have implications for India's military readiness. 10:10 Tanvi Madan: The fourth implication in South Asia could flow from the war's effect on the Russia-China relationship flows. The Sino-Russian ties in recent years have benefited Pakistan. However, they have been of great concern to India. If China-Russia relations deepened further, it could lead to increased Indian concern about Russian reliability. And a Dheli that is concerned about Moscow's ability and willingness to supply India militarily or supported in international forums will seek alternative partners and suppliers a potential opportunity for the US as well as its allies and partners. 18:15 Bonny Lin: China has shifted its position on the Ukraine conflict to be less fully pro Russia. Xi Jinping has expressed that he is deeply grieved by the outbreak of war. China has engaged in diplomacy, called for a ceasefire, proposed a six point humanitarian initiative, and provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine. China's position on Ukraine, however, is far from neutral. China has not condemned Russia or called its aggression an evasion. Xi has yet to speak to President Zelenskyy. There is no evidence that China has sought to pressure Russia in any way or form. China has amplified Russian disinformation and pushed back against Western sanctions. To date, Beijing has not provided direct military support to Russia and has not engaged in systemic efforts to help Russia evade sanctions. However, China's ambassador to Russia has encouraged Chinese companies to quote "fill the void in the Russian market." 19:14 Bonny Lin: The Ukraine crisis has reinforced China's view that US military expansion could provoke conflict in the Indo-Pacific. Chinese interlocutors have voiced concern that the United States and NATO are fighting Russia today, but might fight China next. China views NATO expansion as one of the key causes of the Korean conflict and sees parallels between NATO activities in Europe and US efforts in the Indo-Pacific. Beijing is worried that increasing US and ally support for Taiwan and other regional allies and partners elevates the risk of US-China military confrontation. This pessimistic assessment is why Beijing will continue to stand by Russia as a close strategic partner. 19:56 Bonny Lin: The Ukraine crisis has reinforced and strengthened China's desire to be more self reliant. China is investing more to ensure the security of food, energy, and raw materials. Beijing is also seeking more resilient industrial supply chains, as well as PRC-led systems, including alternatives to Swift. At the same time, Beijing is likely to further cultivate dependencies on China, such that any potential Western led sanctions on China or international-community-led sanctions on China in the future will be painful to the West and difficult to sustain. 21:15 Bonny Lin: China has observed that Russia put its nuclear and strategic forces on high alert and NATO did not send conventional forces to Ukraine. This is leading China to question its nuclear policy and posture. 21:57 Bonny Lin: As Beijing watches the Western and particularly G7-led unity among advanced democracies, it is also seeing that a number of countries in the developing world are not joining in on the sanctions. As a result, Beijing has tried to increase its influence and in many ways building on Russian influence in developing regions. And Beijing is likely to try to get all that influence moving forward. 24:24 Dan Blumenthal: China took the opportunity of Russia's invasion on February 4 to lay out a document that criticizes, very specifically, almost all aspects of United States global policy. Very specifically, including Oculus for NATO enlargement to Oculus to the Indo Pacific strategy. It got Russia to sign up to Xi Jinping's theory that we're in a new era of geopolitics that will replace US leadership, that US leadership is faulty and it's dividing the world into blocks such as NATO, that NATO expansion is the problem, that Indo-Pacific strategy is the same thing as NATO expansion. 25:45 Dan Blumenthal: We should take very seriously what they say, particularly in Chinese, and what they're saying is very clearly pro-Russia and very clear, specific, searing critiques of the US-led world order. 26:47 Dan Blumenthal: And frankly, while the West is unified, and the US and the West and some of our Asian allies are unified, most of the rest of the world is not with us on this issue of China and Russia being these authoritarian, revisionist great powers, and that's a real problem. Middle East, North Africa, and Global Counterterrorism May 18, 2022 House Committee on Foreign Affairs: Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and Global Counterterrorism Witnesses: Dr. Hanna Notte, Senior Research Associate, Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Dr. Frederic Wehrey, Senior Fellow, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Caitlin Welsh, Director of the Global Food Security Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies Grant Rumley, Senior Fellow, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy Clips 12:55 Hanna Notte: First, Moscow's military presence in Syria has given it a buffer zone on its southern flank to counter perceived threats from within the region, but also to deter NATO outside the European theater. And second, Russia has turned to the region to diversify its economic relations with a focus on arms sales, civilian nuclear exports and wheat supplies. And in building influence, Russia has largely followed what I call a low cost high disruption approach, also using hybrid tactics such as private military companies and disinformation. Now, these Russian interests in the region will not fundamentally change with the invasion of Ukraine. Today, Russia's regional diplomacy remains highly active, aimed at offsetting the impact of Western sanctions and demonstrating that Moscow is not isolated internationally. 14:09 Hanna Notte: Starting with arms control and Non-Proliferation, though Moscow seemed intent on spoiling negotiations to restore the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] in early March. It subsequently dropped demands for written guarantees that its cooperation with Iran would not be hindered by sanctions imposed over Ukraine. But still, I think the geopolitical situation might make Moscow less willing to help finalize a nuclear deal. As in the past, Russia is also unlikely to support any US efforts to curb Iran's use of missiles and proxies in the region, because essentially, Iran's regional strategy pins down us resources while elevating Russia as a regional mediator, which serves Russian interests well. 15:17 Hanna Notte: Just a few words on Syria. Security Council resolution 2585 on the provision of humanitarian aid to northwest Syria is up for renewal in July. Now, Rationally speaking, the Kremlin should cooperate to avoid a worsening of serious food crisis, especially if an end game in Ukraine remains out of reach. But considering the current level of tensions between Russia and the West, I think the United States should be prepared for a Russian Security Council veto regardless, alongside continued Russian stalling on the Syrian constitutional committee. Moscow has no serious interest in seeing the committee advance. It will instead try to foster a Gulf Arab counterweight to Iran in Syria through normalization, especially for the contingency that Russia may need to scale back its own presence in Syria due to Ukraine. 16:14 Hanna Notte: First, unfortunately I think there's a widespread perception that the Ukraine war is not their war, that it's a Great Power NATO-Russia war, partially fueled by NATO and US actions visa vis Russia. 16:27 Hanna Notte: Second, there are accusations of Western double standards. The military support to Kyiv, the reception of Ukrainian refugees, these are rightly or wrongly viewed as proof that the West cares significantly more about conflict in Europe's neighborhood than those in the Middle East. 16:42 Hanna Notte: Third, regional elites worry about US conventional security guarantees. They fear that the threats posed by Russia and China will accelerate a decline in US power in the Middle East. And they also fear that the US will have limited bandwidth to confront Iran's missile and proxy activities. And with those fears, they feel they cannot afford to put all their eggs into the US basket. 17:07 Hanna Notte: And then finally, each regional state has very distinct business and security interests with Russia. As a result, and I'll end here, I think us opportunities to get regional states to turn against Russia are circumscribed. loosening these ties that states have been building with Russia will require a heavy lift. 18:57 Frederic Wehrey: This engagement is largely opportunistic and ad hoc. It seizes on instability and power vacuums and exploits the insecurities of US partners in the region about the reliability of US support, and their displeasure with the conditionality that the US sometimes attaches to its arms sales. Russian arms deliveries, in contrast, are faster and free from restrictions related to human rights. But Russia cannot provide the security guarantees that many Arab states have depended on from the United States. 19:29 Frederic Wehrey: Now, in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine, Russia is trying to reap dividends from its investment in the region, call in favors, and capitalize on local ambivalence and hostility to the United States, both from states and from Arab publics. America's Arab security partners have differed on joining the Western condemnation of Russian aggression, and some of refuse to join efforts to isolate Russia economically. 20:31 Frederic Wehrey: Russia's disastrous war in Ukraine is tarnishing its reputation as an arms supplier in the Middle East. Russian weapons have been shown to be flawed in combat and often fatally. So, Battlefield expenditures and attrition have whittled away Russia's inventory, especially precision munitions, and sanctions have eroded its defense industrial base, especially electronic components. As a result, Russia won't be able to fulfill its existing commitments, and potential buyers will be increasingly dissuaded from turning to Russia. This shortfall could be modestly exploited by China, which possesses large quantities of Russian made arms and spare parts, which you could use to keep existing inventories in the region up and running. It could also intensify its efforts to sell its own advanced weaponry like drones. 23:50 Caitlin Welsh: The war has reduced supplies and increased prices of foods exported from Ukraine and Russia, namely wheat, maize and sunflower oil, driven up demand for substitute products and reduced fertilizer exports from the Black Sea. Today's high cost of energy puts further pressure on food and fertilizer prices. Most vulnerable to the impact of these price spikes are countries for whom wheat is a major source of calories that rely on imports to meet their food security needs, and that source a significant proportion of their imports from Ukraine and Russia. 24:38 Caitlin Welsh: Egypt is the world's largest importer of wheat, sourcing over 70% of its wheat from the Black Sea. 25:42 Caitlin Welsh: The Russian Ukraine war is limiting access to wheat for Lebanon, already in one of the worst economic crises in the world. Lebanon has not recorded economic growth since 2017 and food price inflation inflation reached 400% in December 2021. Lebanon procures approximately 75% of its wheat from Russia and Ukraine. 28:48 Grant Rumley: Russia is one of the few countries in the world to maintain a relatively positive diplomatic standing with nearly every country in the Middle East. It does so through a combination of an active military presence, high level diplomatic engagement, and a concerted effort to position itself as a viable source of arms, should countries seek non-US material. 29:08 Grant Rumley: Russia's military presence in the region is well documented by Russian MOD statements. Russia has deployed over 60,000 troops to Syria since intervening in 2015. From its two bases in Syria, Hmeimim and Tartous, Russia is able to project power into the eastern Mediterranean, influence the course of the Syrian civil war, and intervene in countries like Libya. 29:47 Grant Rumley: Russia's invasion of Ukraine, however, threatens Russia standing in the region. Already reports indicate Russia has begun withdrawing some troops and mercenaries from the region to support its invasion of Ukraine. While we can expect these reports to continue if the war continues to go poorly for Russia, I'm skeptical of a full Russian withdrawal, and instead expect Russia to continue to consolidate its forces until it's left with a skeleton presence at Hmeimim and Tartous, its most strategic assets in the region. 30:26 Grant Rumley: On arms sales, the Russian defense industry, which has struggled to produce key platforms following sanctions initially placed after its 2014 invasion of Ukraine, will likely have to prioritize replenishing the Russian military over exporting. Further, customers of Russian arms may struggle with the resources to maintain and sustain the material in their inventory. Still, so long as Russia is able to make platforms, there will likely always be potential customers of Russian arms. 41:25 Grant Rumley: I definitely think customers of Russian arms are going to have several hurdles going forward, not only with simply maintaining and sustaining what they've already purchased, but in some of the basic logistics, even the payment process. Russian bank complained last month that it wasn't able to process close to a billion dollars in payments from India and Egypt over arms sales. I think countries that purchase Russian arms will also now have to consider the potential that they may incur secondary sanctions, in addition to running afoul of CAATSA [Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act-Related Sanctions]. I think from from our standpoint, there are many ways that we can amend our security cooperation approach. The Middle East, I think is a key theater for the future of great power competition, not only have we been competing with Russia in terms of arms sales there, but China increasingly has sold armed drones to the region. They've sold it to traditional partners, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE. And what they're doing is is oftentimes what we're not willing to do, our partners in the region seek co-production, they seek technology sharing. China and Russia are willing to work together to build these advanced platforms, Russia and the UAE inked an agreement several years ago to produce a fifth generation fighter. Nothing's come of that yet. China and Saudi Arabia, however, signed an agreement a couple of months ago to jointly produce armed drones in Saudi Arabia. And so I think the US may want to think creatively in terms of both what we sell, how we sell it, and what we're doing to make this more of a relationship and something beyond a strict transaction. 43:39 Grant Rumley: Their presence in Syria has evolved from a modest airstrip in 2015, to a base at Hmeimim that by open source reporting can serve as a logistics hub, a medical hub, it has the runways to host Russia's most advanced bombers. There was reports before Ukraine that Russia was deploying two 22 bombers there and hypersonic missiles. Their facility at Tartous, likewise. Their ability to stage naval assets there has expanded to they can now stage up to 11 ships there. So it has grown from from a rather modest beginning to something much more challenging from a US standpoint. In terms of what we can we can do, I think we can continue to support Ukraine and the defense of Ukraine, and the longer that Russia is bogged down in Ukraine, the harder it will be for Russia's military to extend and maintain its presence in the Middle East. 1:01:45 Grant Rumley: I think the US has several partners in the middle of major Russian arms purchases that we can, like Turkey and the S 400, that has requested the F 16, or Egypt and Sukhoi Su-35, that has requested the F 15. I'm not saying we have to make a deal right now for that, but I think it's clear that these countries are going to have gaps in their capabilities where they had planned on having Russian platforms to complement, and we can work with our partners and work with our own defense industry and see if there's ways in which we can provide off ramps for them to gradually disinvest these Russian platforms. 1:03:00 Frederic Wehrey: When countries in the in the region buy US arms, they believe they're buying much more than the capability, the hardware, that they're purchasing an insurance policy. I think especially for states in the Gulf, there's a fundamental sense of insecurity. These are states that face Iran, but they're also autocrats. They're insecure because of their political systems. They face dissent from within. We saw that with Egypt. So they're purchasing a whole stream of US assurances -- they believe they are. 1:06:00 Grant Rumley: The issue of of co-production is one means to address a common complaint, which is buying from America takes too long. That its too complicated, that if we get in line to buy something from the US, we're going to have to wait years to get it. A good example is the F 16. There are over 20 countries in the world that fly the F 16. We currently -- Lockheed Martin builds it out of one facility. That facility, if you get in line today, you're probably not getting the F 16 for five years from when you sign on the dotted line for it. In the 70s and 80s, we co-produced the F 16 with three other European countries and we were able to get them off the line faster. The initial order at those facilities was for 1000 F 16s. The initial order for the F 16 plant in South Carolina was for 90 F 16s for Taiwan and Morocco. And so from an industry standpoint, it's a question of scale. And so they're not able to ramp up the production because while the demand may get closer to 1000 over time, it's at 128. Last I checked, it's not there yet. And so I think we can use foreign military financing, longer security cooperation planning, working with our partners on multi-year acquisition timetables to then also communicate and send a signal to the defense industry that these are orders for upgrades, for new kits that are going to come down the road. You can start to plan around that and potentially address some of these production lags. 1:17:52 Grant Rumley: China has a lot of legacy Russian platforms, and will likely be a leading candidate to transfer some of these platforms to countries that had purchased Russian arms in the past and may be seeking maintenance and sustainment for them. I think China's already active in the Middle East, it's already flooding the market with armed drones. It's already looking to market other platforms as well. It's sold air defense systems to Serbia. It's looking to advance its arm sales. And so if if we aren't going to be the supplier, China is going to step in. 1:18:57 Caitlin Welsh: USDA has projected that 35% of the current wheat crop from Ukraine will not be harvested this year. So their exports are curtailed, at the same time Russia's exports are continuing. Russia has been exempted. Russia's agricultural exports and fertilizer has been exempted from sanctions for the United States, EU and other countries. So Russia continues to export. In fact, USDA is estimating that Russia's exports are increasing at this time. And I'm also seeing open source reporting of Russia stealing grain from Ukraine, relabeling it, and exporting it at a premium to countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Sen. Rand Paul: ‘We cannot save Ukraine by dooming the U.S. economy' May 12, 2022 NBC News Clips Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY): My oath of office is to the US Constitution, not to any foreign nation. And no matter how sympathetic the cause, my oath of office is to the national security of the United States of America. We cannot save Ukraine by dooming the US economy. This bill under consideration would spend $40 billion. This is the second spending bill for Ukraine in two months. And this bill is three times larger than the first. Our military aid to Ukraine is nothing new, though. Since 2014, the United States has provided more than $6 billion dollars in security assistance to Ukraine, in addition to the $14 billion Congress authorized just a month ago. If this bill passes, the US will have authorized roughly $60 billion in total spending for Ukraine Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY): The cost of this package we are voting on today is more than the US spent during the first year of the US conflict in Afghanistan. Congress authorized force, and the President sent troops into the conflict. The same cannot be said of Ukraine. This proposal towers over domestic priorities as well. The massive package of $60 billion to Ukraine dwarfs the $6 million spent on cancer research annually. $60 billion is more than the amount that government collects in gas taxes each year to build roads and bridges. The $60 billion to Ukraine could fund substantial portions or entire large Cabinet departments. The $60 billion nearly equals the entire State Department budget. The 60 billion exceeds the budget for the Department of Homeland Security and for the Department of Energy. And Congress just wants to keep on spending and spending. U.S. Efforts to Support Ukraine May 12, 2022 Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Witnesses: Jessica Lewis, Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Erin McKee, Assistant Administrator for Europe and Eurasia, U.S. Agency for International Development Karen Donfried, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, U.S. Department of State Beth Van Schaack, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice, U.S. Department of State Clips Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA): Are we making it very clear to Russia that we do not want to pose an existential threat to them, that our only goal is to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine? Karen Donfried: We are making it very clear to Russia that this is not a conflict between Russia and the United States. We are not going to engage directly in this war. President Biden has been explicit in saying we are not sending US troops to fight in this war. So I do believe we have made that clear. Our goal here is to end a war not to enlarge it. Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH): As you all are waking up every morning, I know with the thought in mind that America's role here is to help Ukraine win and I want to talk a little about how we define victory. When Secretary Austin said after meeting with President Zelenskyy, that we can win this war against Russia -- this happened a few weeks ago -- I thought that was positive. On Monday, the foreign minister of Ukraine, who all of us have had a chance to visit with said, of course, the victory for us in this war will be a liberation of the rest of the territory. So Assistant Secretary Donfried, first, just a yes or no. Do you believe Ukraine can win this war? Karen Donfried: Yes. Sen. Rob Portman: And how would you define victory? Would you define victory as requiring the return of all Ukraine sovereign territory, including that that the Russians seized in 2014? Karen Donfried: Well, Senator Portman, thank you for that question. And thank you for your engagement on these issues. Your question very much relates to where Chairman Menendez began, which is, are we in a position of believing that it is Ukraine that should be defining what winning means? And I agreed with Chairman Menendez's statement on that, and that is where the administration is. We believe Ukraine should define what victory means. And our policy is trying to ensure Ukraine success, both by — Sen. Rob Portman: So the administration's official position on victory is getting Crimea back and getting the Donetsk and Luhansk region back as well. Karen Donfried: Again, I believe that is for the Ukrainians to define. Karen Donfried: Against this threat to regional security, global stability, and our shared values, we are supporting freedom, democracy, and the rules based order that make our own security and prosperity and that of the world possible. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ): I believe we must also think about reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, the tools and ongoing governance and economic reforms, specifically in the judicial space, that will facilitate rebuilding critical Ukrainian sectors and attracting foreign investment. The Impact of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine in the Middle East and North Africa May 11, 2022 House Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Defense held a budget hearing on the Department of Defense. Witnesses: Lloyd J. Austin III, Secretary of Defense Michael J. McCord, Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller)/Chief Financial Officer General Mark A. Milley, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Clips 21:40 General Mark Milley: Alongside our allies and partners, at any given time approximately 400,000 of us are currently standing watch in 155 countries and conducting operations every day to keep Americans safe. 21:56 General Mark Milley: Currently we are supporting our European allies and guarding NATO's eastern flank, in the face of the unnecessary war of aggression by Russia, against the people of Ukraine, and the assault on the democratic institutions and the rules based international order that have prevented great power war for the last 78 years since the end of World War Two. We are now facing two global powers, China and Russia, each with significant military capabilities, both who intend to fundamentally change the current rules based order. Lindsey Graham declares, "let's take out Putin" and says there is "no off-ramp in this war" May 9, 2022 Clips Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC): If Putin still standing after all this then the world is going to be a very dark place China's going to get the wrong signal and we'll have a mess on our hands in Europe for decades to come so let's take out Putin by helping Ukraine Secretary of State Antony J. Here are your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy.   Curt Widhalm  00:40 Welcome back modern therapists, this is the modern therapist Survival Guide. I'm Curt Widhalm with Katie Vernoy. And this is the podcast for all things therapists. And that includes money and how we're setting ourselves up for running good practices, taking care of ourselves, both while we're working and towards retirement so that way, we don't have to do this forever. And we can potentially retire someday. And here to help us talk about this is David Frank. He is a financial planner and the founder of Turning Point financial, and he's here to help put the fun back in funds and take the ire out of retirement. So thank you very much for joining us today.   David Frank  01:29 Brilliant, thanks so much for that introduction. Kurt. I'm super excited to be here and to talk about, yeah, all things Money and Finance and even the dreaded R word of retirement.   Katie Vernoy  01:40 I'm so glad you're here, we had a lot of fun working together around the conference. And we definitely I feel like you're a friend of the show and a friend of mine. And so I'm so glad you're here talking about that.   David Frank  01:51 Thanks   Katie Vernoy  01:51 Because I think there's a lot that needs to be discussed. On a previous episode Curt and I had been talking about one of the retirement plans that therapists have is suicide, which is horrible. And, and part of that is just not planning not making enough money. And so to me, I feel like this is an important conversation for us to be having. And you're a great person to do it because you're a financial planner, who has chosen to work specifically with therapists. But before I get ahead of myself, the first question we ask everyone is who are you? And what are you putting out to the world?   David Frank  02:26 Yeah, so as Curt mentioned, my name is David Frank, and I am a financial planner, and the founder of turning point, financial fat is a financial planning firm that I began and it is focused exclusively on helping therapists or mental health professionals take care of their finances. So that's what I'm putting out into the world. That's what I'm doing. My kind of mission is to help people live better lives to help your listeners, your therapists out there live better lives, and also grow their impact in the world. Because when we get sort of some of this money stuff out of the way, we can be more present for every element of our lives. And I think it's less about the money and more about the actual feelings and feeling better about money and not being so stressed and overwhelmed about it.   Curt Widhalm  03:08 What's wrong with you if that you chose to work with therapists? How does somebody be like, You know what there there are people who are easy to work with with money, and I'm up for a challenge. Why? What brought you to the the mental health world as far as your client population here?   David Frank  03:31 Yeah, great question. Well, so within the financial planning community, much like within the therapist, community and mental health community, there's this like raging debate going on about whether niching down and really specifically defining your target audience or target market is a good idea or not. And when I started turning point, when I started my own business, the big thing I was worried about is like, is anyone actually going to show up and want to work with me, like actually pay me money for my services? And the other the secondary concern was like, will I be able to add enough value will I actually be able to, like, really understand what's going on for folks and really help them in a meaningful way. And I became super convinced that the solution to both of those anxieties was to define a niche of who I really wanted to work with. And it was a very, what's the right word, I was just very stressed about getting the right niche. And at that time, I was, I was seeing my own therapist, and I had been seeing this guy for several years, and he was awesome. I was working with kind of a life and business coach, and I was agonizing over this decision. And finally, my coach reflected back to me something that was obvious to him, but was invisible to me. And he just said, Why don't you work with therapists? And I was like, Oh, my it was just like a light went off. That's the wrong metaphor, but it just it felt so right. I love talking to therapists, like I sometimes I think like a therapist. I love learning about their business. And it just seemed like a population that I could help and like you say, like, maybe maybe I'm up for the challenge.   Katie Vernoy  05:01 What do you think therapists get wrong when they think about retirement or saving money or taking care of their finances?   David Frank  05:08 Yeah, I what I see is something that not just therapists get wrong, but just generally most people get wrong. And that's this idea of having to figure it all out or get something perfect, rather than just simply getting started. And when it comes to managing finances, both personal finances and professional finances, like your private practice finances, I think the key really is simply just to get started. And so if we think about saving for retirement, I mean, man, just even saying that makes me feel a little bit overwhelmed, right, like, there's so much there to navigate and figure out. But I think the key is to just sort of get started and meet yourself where you're at and just say, Okay, what you really need to do to save for retirement is just that to start saving. So understanding if you can put away even if it's just $5, every month, just get started, build that muscle, build the practice of saving some money and moving it, even if it's just moving it to a dedicated checking account where you're beginning to build up savings, then like down the road, you can come back and sort of figure out, okay, I should probably be investing this money rather than simply putting it into a checking account or something like that. And it is like it's a practice, this stuff is not a project that you sit down one day and get it all done. And then you're just good. It's kind of like a mindfulness practice is really the way I often think about it and encourage others to think about it is to carve out some time, every week to just spend with your money stuff, both your internal stuff, what comes up for you, when you're dealing with money and finances, and with the external stuff of the accounts that you have in the amounts of those accounts and how you navigate it. So I'm just a huge proponent of just sort of getting started and make taking those small, little steps. And I feel too often people get hung up that like, No, I have to make this big, monumental shift, that perfectionist tendency that so many of us have, can really hold us back.   Curt Widhalm  06:57 So I think in your own way, you've answered a couple of the questions that we would normally ask here, which is, when should people start saving? And how much should they start saving, which I'm hearing you say, early, and whatever you can. So that's kind of the first part of this, for maybe some of our listeners who are earlier on in their careers who are facing things like massive student debt, where it's like, well, I should be throwing money at, you know, getting the government off my back or blowing providers off my back. What do you say to somebody in that position where it's very earlier on where they might be kind of death, avoidant, as opposed to starting to think about investing in themselves?   David Frank  07:44 Well, yeah, a couple of things I want to say in response to that. And first, Curt, I think you hit the nail on the head, start saving as soon as you can, there's this this magic of compounding what we talked about in the financial world. And that just means the sooner that you get started saving, the longer you have, or the longer you give those investments to grow. So the amount that you need to save can are like the percentage of your income that you should be saving toward retirement, it can change dramatically depending on when you start. So if you're starting to save for retirement, say in your mid to late 20s, from mid to late 20s, all the way through retirement, that's like 40 years for most of us. And so if you start that early, you could save like 15% of your income and be absolutely fine. The longer you wait, the greater percentage of your earnings that you'll ideally need to set aside. Now I don't want anyone to hear those numbers and kind of like freak out and prevent them from from even getting started. Because anything is better than nothing in this sort of situation. So that's part of the answer. And we can probably talk more about that. But the the student loan issue, I think is a huge one. And yeah, I mean, I really feel like it's so it's so easy to want to avoid student loans and not even look at them. And what I would say is that, regardless of the type of debt, whether it's student loan debt, or a mortgage or auto loan, or really almost anything else, I don't encourage people to start aggressively paying off debt until they've saved, you know, roughly about one times their their annual income through a combination of emergency funds, retirement account savings, and even just, you know, ordinary savings and other other investments. The one exception to that might be really high interest rate credit card debt, which you might want to pay off. But student loans, especially, the only way that you can really get into trouble with student loans is to ignore them and not look at them. There are so many amazing options in terms of different income driven repayment plans out there. If you have federal student loan debts, I would encourage you to start saving and start looking at your student loans and considering what might the right path be for you because there are so many good options out there. Unfortunately, because there are many options. It's a little confusing and overwhelming to navigate. But there are definitely great resources out there. So super long answer To your question, allow you guys to jump in.   Curt Widhalm  10:03 And if I can provide, you know, maybe a little bit of a perspective on this, you know, if you're looking at student loans, if your rates are like 5 6 7 percent in interest, even that can feel scary. But when you look at like stock market returns over the last couple of years, money that you could be saving 5% on by putting into your loan, you could have been getting returns of 1015, or more percent, depending on how that kind of stuff is invested, where you're using that same money to make your retirement come sooner. This is where having some of the ability to kind of sit and look at some of this stuff. And sitting with somebody like David would, I'm sure walk you through some of these kinds of comparisons of here's how you can make even very little money work for you.   David Frank  10:49 Yeah, I think that's that's an excellent point, Curt. And like that's, that's right. Like, it's always great to be investing the money and seeing really great returns from the stock market, like we have seen over the last couple years, really over the last 10 years, it's been an insane period, where there's been really healthy returns. And you're right, like you could have not pay down your student loans whatsoever. Because yeah, they're probably in the neighborhood of 5 6 7 8% interest each year, something like that. And that's just it's so complicated. Like there's so many factors to think through that I think yes, the more you spend some time just sort of looking and learning yourself, the more comfortable you'll start to be with it. And that way you can kind of avoid making more rash, emotional decisions, which is sometimes when folks get themselves in trouble. And yeah, you know, I'm having a conversation with financial person, who you who you trust, and who can help you make the right decision for you. Because there there is no one right decision really ever when it comes to all these things. It really is personal and helping a client or helping the person sitting across from me determine what is the right move for them, given their life's their their life, rather, their goal, their anxieties around money, their worries, how do we manage all those different things?   Katie Vernoy  11:59 I like that you're talking about it as individual decisions. I think there are some things we're kind of the cold hard numbers with some therapists are great at math, many therapists are not great at math, that's kind of a trope that I don't actually like, I think it's this thing of, of being able to actually look at the cold, hard numbers of what do I save by paying the minimum payment on my debt? Versus what do I earn from even putting something in a very risk free I mean, the stock market isn't necessarily risk free, you could make 10%, or you could lose 20%. You know, there's, there's so much there. And I think some people can hold that risk and are used to that, and some folks can't. And so I think looking at what, what makes sense for you with the emotional makeup of how you're looking at your money, the amount of bass that you have and can play around with as well as what your debt looks like. It seems like understanding that is really important. I think when we're looking at folks who are first starting out, which is kind of Kurt's question, which is like they have student loan debt, most likely, they are not earning a lot. And so you're saying kind of look at the numbers identify what's going to make the most sense, save a year's worth of salary before you really aggressively attack your student loan debt, I would recommend probably paying minimum payments. So you don't start? Well, yes, fee is as well. But like, I think there are folks that want they want to be debt free. And I think there's also a lot of folks who know that most people are never completely debt free because of mortgages or, or car loans or other types of debt that can be accrued. But when you look at folks who are a little further on, and whether it's age wise, or career wise, they're further along, and maybe they haven't saved for retirement, what would you say to them, because I think for folks who are early on and they can save the $5 a month or whatever, that's awesome. And I think that there is that compounding that you were talking about. But there are folks that I've talked to even that are like, I am in my 50s I'm in my 60s, I haven't done anything. And I just don't want to have to work forever. And so what would you recommend for folks who are further on in their life who are maybe further on in their career? What should you say, you know, how do you determine what you should save? How do you determine how and when you can retire? I mean, for folks who are later on I think there's there's sometimes a bigger question mark than folks for starting out. I mean, the message when you're first starting out when you're younger, and you're newer in your career, like just save, start it, you've got a lot of time it'll grow, we promise. But for folks that don't have that time, it's especially people who have recently seen their parents, colleagues and friends go through, you know, 2008 or, or different times when retirement just dropped out completely. I mean, there's some fear there's some societal fear around investing. Potentially you have to look at too.   David Frank  14:47 Yeah. No, I like the way you teed up that question too, because I Yes, starting to save and invest young is such great advice. And I also like to describe it as I'm like, It's advice for time travelers, right? Because it's like yeah, that is a lovely thing, but like who actually does that? I mean, some people do for sure.   Katie Vernoy  15:05 Curt and I both did because of the backgrounds that we have. So we both are very fortunate. But not everyone has that.   David Frank  15:12 No, well, just like as an aside, like, I also have like that similar background, like I have an undergraduate degree in finance, I have an MBA in finance. And so like, right out of the gate, in my early 20s, I was like, I gotta be saving, I got to be putting all this money in a 401k. And I did that from like, 22, or whatever to like, 32. And I was doing great. Like I was killing it. And then you know, life happened. And like, I went through a really rough period in my life, I ended up unemployed for like, three years. And guess what, like, I burned through all those savings. So I thought I had done all the right things. And I had, but like, life just happens. And so the story that I told myself at the age of 35, when I was like, essentially broke and starting over was, like, there were a lot of nevers like this is I'm never gonna have the same amount of money, I'm never gonna have the security, I'm never gonna feel comfortable. It's just like, it's kind of like it's over for me. And the truth is that life had all kinds of twists and turns in store for me, and that most of what I was telling myself then wasn't true. So why do I even tell that story? I think the point is, is like a no one does this money stuff perfectly, even if we start out of the game strong, so just be kind and forgiving to yourself, number one. And number two, you really don't know what the future holds like there can be tremendous improvements made in a really short amount of time. So with that, as background, I would say, again, I have this concept I call money dates, which is just set aside 30 minutes, every day, every week rather, or so every week or so 30 minutes or so put it on your calendar and just treat it as if it were, you know, a client appointment and be like, I'm going to sit with my money stuff, and just look at it every week, and just see what's happening. So that I think, especially if you're find yourself later in life, and you use the specter, you have worry or fear about retirement, just start that practice, start getting familiar with what's happening, start understanding maybe how much you might need to save. Yeah, and also try to bring someone else into it with you. Maybe that's a significant other, maybe that's someone in your personal life, who you feel comfortable having this conversation with, just to sort of make it seem less private and scary. That could also be someone like me, like a financial professional, that you have reason to believe would be trustworthy, and would give you good advice. Because there are always options, there's always hope. There's so many things, different levers, you can pull. And the last point I'll make on this is that if you're really worried First, I would go to the Social Security Administration website and just log in, create an account, see what your you'll be entitled to in terms of social security benefits, it might actually be a little bit more than you're suspecting. And that's just like so that that can provide a really solid base. It's not like you have to pay for everything yourself in return in retirement, we do have a bit of a backstop. So start there, and then begin to think, okay, beyond that monthly payment that I'll likely get, what more might I need? And how might I start to get there,   Curt Widhalm  18:05 I'm imagining these money dates of just sitting around with your financial statements and staring them in the eyes and doing the 36 questions to make you fall in love. Alright. Sounds great. But I don't know also, that it's that far off, when it's actually being able to look at this stuff intently as you're describing, and kind of shifting this from maybe more of the personal finance section to you also work with people as far as their finances towards their practices as well. How did how did those conversations look?   David Frank  18:39 Yeah, I mean, they they really run the gamut, you know, you know, what, what most people want to know, is just like, Am I doing okay? Like, is this okay? And I think the answer is, it's kind of this, I'll give like someone like something I read on the cover of a Buddhist magazine, which is like, your perfect just as you are. And you could use some improvement. I feel like that's always kind of like where I kind of began with this. Yeah. It's, it's, it's just like, that's just the truth, you know, and like, so everyone, like, it's a similar practice of just being like, okay, let's, let's look at your practice financials. When's the last time you looked at your profit and loss statement or your p&l? And for a lot of people, it's like, well, the last time I had to, which is when I had to prepare my taxes last year, and like, from there, like I'm not really sure. And so it's like, okay, let's no big deal, a very common experience. And we can and we can do better. So we can just sort of look at it and just sort of spend time with those numbers and just be like, I don't know what any of this means. Right? Like it's they're confusing. These financial statements are confusing. And every therapist that I've ever met, whether they're self described good at math or terrible at math, can understand them. Because this is just simple math. I think it's more about creating room and space for the uncomfortable feelings that come up. When when folks start to, to work with their practice finances, and it's Working to sort of sweep out of the way limiting beliefs around Oh, I'm just no good at this, I'll never figure this out. Because I guarantee like you can figure it out. And sometimes sure you need some support from a professional like me or a peer or whomever. But it's just spending time. And yeah, asking those 36 questions to fall in love with your practice, P&L, I think is, it's not a bad place to begin.   Katie Vernoy  20:23 That's funny, I think there's, there's so much emotion around money and security. And, and I think everybody, you know, there's a lot of different episodes, we've done with different folks on, you know, kind of money mindset and stuff. And we can link to those in the show notes as well. But I think that there's this idea, you know, we've got the folks that haven't saved anything and just, you know, they're living in a way or practicing in a way where they're barely making enough money to survive, or they're just not thinking about it, or whatever, you know. And then there's folks I've interacted with on the other side, where they don't pay themselves a lot, they save a lot of money in a, like an emergency fund, or they're investing a lot. And one of the questions that you had suggested we talk about is can you save too much? And so, so I wanted to ask about that. Because I think that there are folks who feel very safe, when they have a lot of money saved or set aside. And then and then they don't touch it at all. And to me, I feel like there there's some benefit to that. But I think to a point, and then there's also I think some potential things that can get in the way if you need a gigantic emergency fund.   David Frank  21:41 Yeah, I mean, well said exactly. And I kind of like talking about this too, because having money saved wherever it is, whether it's an a retirement account, or an investment account. It for a lot of people, it feels like safety and security. And I think on some level, but you know, money touches pretty much everything. I might argue everything in life, like every moment of your day, is impacted by money, even if you're just like carving out enough time to not be working or thinking about money. That's that's time, I guess, theoretically, you could be making money, or something like that. So it's so intertwined. And we get so many messages from society around money and why it's important what we should be doing with it. That yeah, that at that end of the spectrum, where it's just like, I want to squirrel away and save, because it creates safety and security, I think, yeah, I think I think there is a risk of saving too much. And it's the question I always ask is sort of, you know, what, what is important? Like, if you find yourself saving a lot of money, ask yourself what is important about having so much money in this account, or what is important about having a big emergency fund, you know, what comes up that there's, there's certainly something going on, and I think it isn't necessarily bad. And yet, I would say if you are constantly finding yourself having to live from a place of restriction or scarcity in that, like, oh, I can't take that vacation. Because I I'd rather be saving money. I can't even maybe take a professional training because even though I feel really passionate about doing that, I need to be saving money. If you find you're constantly saying no to things that would nourish you that would make your quality of life better, then I think there's something there's something you need to look at. And again, it's it's it's likely an emotional issue. And I think that's that's another good opportunity to, you know, work with a professional or also there's like so many, like pretty good tools online these days to help you assess where, where am I really in terms of saving for retirement? How much? Like, how safe do I do I need to be? This is like a personal story about saving so much for retirement, I had a friend who lived in New York, he worked for, I can't remember who he worked for. But he had, he had like a pension, like a really generous pension. And he was putting a ton of money into his 401k. And he was like three years away from retirement. And like, by any measure, he had all the safety and security at least financially that anyone could ever hope for. And he was so looking for forward to retirement, and then the pandemic hit. And he he died of a heart attack, just a sudden heart attack. Totally unexpected. I mean, the reason I share that is like It was tragic. It was horrible. And, and it's life, right? Like we're never we're not promised anything. So I think it's got to be a balance. Yes, save and plan for the future. And just know that there is no such thing as complete safety and security because our life's journeys can end really at any point. And I think we just need to acknowledge both of those facts that yes, we want to be living in the moment and making our current life as good as reasonably possible. And also be planning prudently for the future and then balancing those two and it's tricky.   Curt Widhalm  24:50 Besides just like squirreling money away and the places to put that money and how to spend that money. Are there other considerations of how therapy should be taking care of themselves and their assets. You know, like with your friend example here, I'm sure that part of the extension of this is looking at things like wills and power of attorney type things.   David Frank  25:14 Yeah. Yeah. All that fun stuff. That's yeah, like, I think of it as like, risk risk planning, and then estate and incapacity planning. And as a comprehensive financial planner, those are things that I that I help folks look at as well. And they're things that many of us don't want to want to look at. But yeah, you know, you know, I think when it comes to like, sort of estate in an incapacity planning, and that's the type of work that I will help clients think through, and you almost certainly need to work with a professional attorney licensed in your state of residence to put a plan like that in place. So many folks think, oh, estate planning, that's something for rich people. And yeah, that's true. And it's also pretty much for all of us. So like, putting in place like a professional will, which really just ensures that your your clients are cared for in the event, you can't continue to show up for them the way you do today in your practice, and also having like personal incapacity and estate planning documents in place, powers of attorney, you know, wills, maybe maybe a trust to depending on what state you live in, these are uncomfortable things to think about. It's not comfortable to think about our own potential, passing our inevitable passing, or our potential incapacity. And I think it's really important. It's really, I think, I view this stuff as like an extension of loving kindness to, to your future self, to your clients, to your family members and loved ones. And having having a thought partner to think through what are the right pieces of that plan to have in place for you, I think is is really important.   Katie Vernoy  26:46 The balance between living now and saving for the future, I think is a really tough one. I think along the lines of we could die at any moment. But we also could live longer than we expect.   David Frank  26:57 Yeah,   Katie Vernoy  26:57 I think the retirement age of 65, which, you know, came into place when people lived to be 70 or 75. You know, I think people living into their hundreds, I think that there is there is a lot longer that people theoretically could be retired. We also know there's a lot of therapists who practice well beyond that, because it's it can be a good quote unquote, retirement career. But to me, it seems like there's there's a lot to consider both in how do I live well, today, but also, how do I save enough to really live a long, long life, you know, like, the hope is that you're going to live and be in retirement for 3040 years. Right. You know, I think that that seems that's what I want. And so, if we're looking at identifying, I don't even know if there's a there's an answer here. And it probably is, you know, appropriately and it depends answer. But is there a percentage of our income that we should say, versus a percentage that we should and reinvest into our businesses? Or a percentage that we should use to enjoy our lives? Like, like, Are there standard typical percentages that people can kind of keep in mind when they're trying to make some of these decisions? If they are currently doing that on their own or with a, a non professional thinking partner?   David Frank  28:27 Yeah, that's a great question. And I think you're right, that my answer is going to be prefaced by It depends.   Katie Vernoy  28:33 Of course,   David Frank  28:34 and yeah, you know, and obviously, nothing we've covered here today, including what I'm about to say is advice for anyone listening, right? Like, I don't know, you personally, listener, whoever you are. So I can't give advice that's, that's tailored to your particular situation. But in general, going back to the theme of it, it also depends when you've started saving. So if you're starting to save for retirement, and you're somewhere in your mid to late 20s, targeting saving 15% of your, of your pre tax income. So a quick aside, like it's difficult to know, like, especially if you're self employed, you have your own private practice, how much money am I even making, the best place I think to go and look for that is on the first page of your federal income tax return. I know that's like a scary place like no one wants to go to unless they're absolutely forced to. But there's so many good numbers on it. And there, you will find your total income on the very first page, I think it's like line 16 or something, and that'll tell you your total income. So I would say find that number. And then say if you're in your 20s, multiply that by 15% or 15% of that, that's ideally how much you should be saving every year. If you're in your late 30s, I would say that number should be closer to 25% of your total income. And then if you're around 50, late 40s 50s, then that number starts to get closer to even 50% which is like a scary number. So that's that's kind of aspirational, like who can really do like that's, that's really, really tough, which is why I don't want those numbers like they're not carved in stone. They're rough guidelines. And if you find yourself for not meeting them, that would be a typical human experience, right? Like most people aren't going to consistently meet those. That's okay, just continue doing the best the best you can. And then like, once, if and when you can hit those numbers, then it's like the rest of your money, you need to figure out like, what, what is the right balance for you, and then it totally depends like is, if you can hit your savings targets of let's like, roughly, for most people, it's gonna be like 15, in the range of 15 to 25%. Like, that's mostly realistic. And that's like a pretty solid number that we can really begin to work with that opens up options for yourself for your future self, then they spend the rest of the money in the way that feels best to you, like, yeah, reinvest some of that. reinvest in your practice, like do do what feels what gives you energy, like kind of like, like, you know, what gives you joy? Like that's, that's really how I think it's important to think about   Curt Widhalm  30:53 when you're working with clients, I'm imagining that some of the depends that you're talking about here and getting to know them probably comes very much like therapy, and what do you value would you are hitting some of these financial goals and how you should spend it that for some clients, it might be, alright, you need to start spending this money, let's talk about buying a second house. Whereas for somebody else that might be, you know, what's you know, and see what kinds of, you know, charitable contributions that you can make? Do you ever find yourself in those very, very positive positions, but also on the flip side of that, like, hey, maybe you shouldn't get that doctorate, because it doesn't fit within your financial plans, or any kinds of other like, hold up like, this doesn't seem to fit with the lifestyle and values that you've talked about?   David Frank  31:46 Yeah, I mean, what I like to say, and this is not an original phrase that borrowed it from someone else in the personal finance industry, but I like to say like, you can have basically anything you want, you just can't have everything. So if you really want to do something, for whatever reason, I always encourage a little bit of self reflection, just sort of asking what what is it about, for example, getting a doctorate that feels so important and vital to you? And then if you answer that question to your satisfaction, like that's not it's not my life, it's not up to me what the best use of your money is, if it's really something that's vital and important to you, then the question is, well, what are the right trade offs? So let's, let's just look with some clarity and say, This is how much this is going to cost. In the case of a doctorate, there's student loans and options like that, and just be as clear eyed as we can about the future and say, Okay, here's why you want to do this, here's the why it's important, or here are the elements about it that are important for you. And here's the numbers associated with that, let's just figure out how to make it work well. And sometimes when when, when folks see the other the sacrifices and other areas of their life that they might have to make, suddenly they realize, actually, maybe this isn't what I want, because there are competing employer priorities that are actually more important. And I just, I sort of forgot. So sometimes what I do is just remind people just reflect back to them, what they've told me, or what they've demonstrated to me is important to them. Because as human beings we do with like, we see like a shiny object, and we want to chase after it. And sometimes that shiny object is like really something you should be pursuing. And other times, it's something that's just a distraction, and we just need to be reminded of what's more important.   Katie Vernoy  33:23 I love that I think it's really important, I guess that's the right word, I can think of here to understand yourself your values, and put put an individual plan together, I see a lot of shoulds you should be making this much money, you should be doing this, you should be doing that. And I think being able to really talk through with a knowledgeable person, you know, what, what actually are my values around this? What are my life goals? And how do I actually plan for those life goals versus someone else's, and and even really looking at individual circumstances, I've had folks that have told me that they don't want to take insurance because they get $5 less than their full fee. And I'm like, you're listening to advice from people in California where they get half of their full fee, you know, and so, like, you know, all of these shoulds and the kind of impromptu financial advice from other therapists and Facebook groups I think is something that we really need to fight against so that people can look at their own numbers, their own situation and make their own plan and so I love everything that you've said. And I appreciate your your thoughtfulness and your understanding of the emotional aspects of it that really make it hard for some folks to do this in a clear eyed way.   David Frank  34:43 Yeah, well thank you that's very kind and and yeah, I just think that word should I hate that it's just like stop shooting all over yourself like there is no once i Mister like they're just there is no right answer really for any of this and Yeah, like advice. I just like, I get so triggered Maybe is there I don't know what the right word is. But like when people give advice, I heard this in a webinar I attended the other month. And the speaker said, All advice is autobiographical. And I'm like, what does that mean? And what he meant was that anytime someone is giving you advice, they're speaking from their own experience. So they're really giving advice to themselves, like, oh, I should have done this in the past, or I should be doing this right now. But I'm actually not, or, or whatever it is. And so advice can be good. But whether it's coming from a professional, like a financial advisor, or a colleague that you know, somewhere, or someone you don't know, but in a Facebook group, just ask them to explain. They're like, Oh, okay, interesting point. Why do you why do you say that? Like, what, what is the thinking behind that? And you may discover that, oh, that, that that piece of advice applies for them, because it's autobiographical, but it's sure doesn't apply to me. Um, or you might find it does apply to you, and great if it does, but it is also individual,   Curt Widhalm  36:01 where can people find out more about you and turning point financial, if they want to reach out to you and work with you?   David Frank  36:10 Yeah, so the best thing for people to do is to navigate to my website, and access my finance quickstart guide for therapists. And that'll give you a sense of what you should be thinking about in your fancy financial life. And it also gives you a good sense of what it might be like to work with me. And my website is turning point hq.com. So that's like turning point, a bridge, the abbreviation for headquarters. And yeah, there's a ton of good resources on there. And I think I will even by the time this airs, we'll have a little simple worksheet that folks can work through to help them determine how much they might, they ought to be I don't, I'm gonna use the word should how much they might want to consider saving for retirement so so they can navigate to the website and find all that good stuff.   Curt Widhalm  36:51 And you've got an offer for our listeners as well.   David Frank  36:56 I do for just a special offer. For the listeners of this great podcast, I'm offering 20% off my QuickStart coaching intensive. So navigate to my website, under the Services description, you'll find more information about that. And when they're scheduling that meeting, if they just enter the code, MTSG, or something like that, I will offer them 20% off when it comes to pay me.   Katie Vernoy  37:18 Yay. That's awesome. How to overcome limiting beliefs about money As a former limiting beliefs expert, I, too, used to get sucked into the limiting beliefs about money story. Friend, I'm here to tell you – while getting a graduate degree does increase your income (I have a masters AND a specialist degree) and while, yes, a masters degree is one way to increase your income, what if I told you that what's really holding you back, what's really keeping you from making the income you desire, is your limiting beliefs about money? “Okay, Kayse, but what are limiting beliefs?” Well, limiting beliefs might include your limiting thoughts about the world you were born into. Tennessee receiver, Grant Frerking, is among few others who is completely exploiting NIL benefits to its fullest. Deion Sanders....umm...or maybe just Coach, dipped out of SWAC media day after being referred to by his first name. When you look back to when you were 25, could you have guessed you’d be making as much money, or be as wealthy, as you are today?   Back then, you’d probably have thought someone making as much as you is rich!… But are you? Do you feel rich?   If you stopped working today, would you be able to retire and do anything you want? No? Why is that? Why are high-earners still no happier than when they were just making a modest living?   As John D. Rockefeller is quoted say, when asked when is enough, enough?, he said, “Just one dollar more…”   John D. Rockefeller… One of the richest guys in American history. The guy who’s name is on buildings from New York to San Francisco…. “Just one dollar more”.   I don’t know about you but that doesn’t exactly scream “happy” or “content” to me. To clarify, I don’t use the words “content” or “contentment” to signify complacency. Quite the contrary! I’m a capitalist. In my upper 40s, I get giddy at the thought of how big of an impact I can have in the lives of others.   This begs the question… “How much is enough?” At what stage does our emotional well-being plateau?   According to a 2010 nation-wide survey, lead by Nobel Peace Prize recipients Daniel Kahneman & Angus Deaton out of Princeton University of more than 450,000 responses to a Gallup poll on health & well-being - the magic number is approximately $75,000 per year.   There’s a correlation between income and emotional well-being, but this stops around $75k.   This means, you feel better when you go from $40K to $50K, and $60K to $70K, but once you hit that $75K mark, it’s basically a wash. Everything after $75,000 per year is diminishing returns.   Why is that? 75 racks doesn’t seem really seem like all that much to me. And more than likely, you surpassed that mark years ago.   Ask yourself, is your life really all that much better now than back then? Do you feel richer?   When 70% of lottery winners go broke within 5 years of hitting the jackpot, can we really say that the lack of money was their problem?   Sure, money goes a lot further in Des Moines, Iowa or Indianapolis than in New York or California, so this number is just an average, but the fact of the of matter is that at some point, money does not provide any more value to us emotionally.   So, should we go back to making $75,000 a year? Hell no! But, that also doesn’t mean we should just go buy more stuff.   3 Steps To Increasing Emotional Well-Being Beyond The Money   Know your number. How much do you really need? Do you have kids? Are you college planning? Do you desire more culture and to travel? Get clear on who you want to be, and that will determine what you need. Get crystal clear on what success means to you. If success is measured on a balance sheet, life is going to be pretty unrewarding. Reevaluate your social circles. As Jim Rohn said, “you are the average of you 5 closest friends.” If you are surrounded by money-hungry animals, but you desire to help underprivileged children learn about art, you might want to make some new friends… Resources High-income Improves Life Evaluation, But Not Emotional Well-being? This Podcast Is Episode Number 0235 And It Will Be About Key Reports For Your Contracting Company Explained QuickBooks has over a hundred reports that can be viewed on a regular basis You could spend all of your time seeing a report in QuickBooks and trying to find the way to populate numbers in the report. Many reports are designed for specific things. Take for example the view of the Home Page. Just because the feature is on the Home Page in QuickBooks does not mean it is useful for every contractor. Five Key Performance Indicators Every Construction Company Needs To Survive And Thrive! It is not practical or recommended for the Small Contractor or Handyman to track inventory. For most contractors, the material goes from the supplier directly to the job which is not the definition of inventory. Inventory is what goes into the warehouse and stays, and stays and stays. Most contractors do not have the money to invest in inventory. Your supplier is just down the street.  They have on-demand inventory – what you need when you need it.   Plumbers, Electricians, and HVAC Contractors tend to have a certain amount of inventory, and it is better to do a physical inventory a couple of times a year. (End of year and maybe mid-point of the year and enter as bulk numbers) There are specialty programs that are an add-on to QuickBooks for those larger companies who need to track inventory. Most inventory programs only work with QuickBooks Enterprise. Trying to keep track of each item in the job can be overwhelming and not practical for smaller jobs. If it is a Cost+ or Time and Material job then be sure you only purchase what you need and assign that receipt to that specific job.      Five Key Performance Indicator Reports that are useful to every contractor regardless of their size. #1 Cash How much cash is in the bank. Why because you have bills to pay, material to purchase and upcoming expenses.   #2 Accounts Receivable How much work have I completed and billed the customer? Contractors get confused and think that the signed contract is for “X Amount” and therefore they have that much coming before the job starts.   Accounts Receivable is for completed work that you bill your customer or client. In other words, how much can you expect to pick up a check for today? From someone doing their accounting, it seems simpler to create an invoice for the whole job and then takes payments on it. The problem is that the balance is aging nicely and give a false impression of the company’s financial position. Add the time it takes to determine what is owed to you. After a short while, QuickBooks becomes a real MESS. Then your banker asks for financials, and you are trying to explain to the Banker that your Accounts Receivable includes work not started or completed. Bankers want to know How Much Money can you expect to collect today!           #3 Accounts Payable What bills do I have coming up? Accounts Payable is where you track all your supplier invoices, match against the month end statement and your subcontractor bills. It is not the place to track your monthly payments to your credit cards, your payroll or other tax payments to State and Federal Agencies. These items are in other places as liabilities in your QuickBooks file. Please Note: All transactions on your credit cards need to be entered into QuickBooks (not just the month in balance with payment due).   #4 Profit and Loss Profit and Loss are keeping track of your income and expenses and will reflect the Gross Profit and Net Profit of the business. This report is date specific. Please Note: Expenses are broken down between the Cost of Goods Sold (direct costs to jobs) and Expenses (which tend to be overhead related). QuickBooks by default is on the accrual method. Reports are converted to the Cash Method for Sales Tax and Federal and State Income Tax Reports. #5 Balance Sheet The Balance Sheet is tracking the overall health of the company. Assets include Cash, Accounts Receivable, Undeposited Funds and Inventory. Yes – the Government treats those piles, boxes, and pallets of unsold material as an asset.  (Which increases profit). Unless you are have magical skills, it is impossible to trade that box of treasures for a tank of gas, lunch, bag of groceries. Having a good relationship with your suppliers is key. Good suppliers will encourage the return of material.  Even with a restocking charge – Cash is more useful.   Liabilities is tracking the amount that is due to others. Short term is Accounts Payable and Credit Cards. Long-term is your Truck Loan, Equipment Loan, Loans to yourself or others.   Please Note: Track all money you lend to your company. You cannot get it back out without it being considered income unless you document you put it into the company. Startup costs by nature are funds lent to the business because unless a contractor has been doing “side work” the business did not have any income before it began to cover the initial costs of setting up your contracting company.   Equity is the value you have into the company. The net difference Assets – Liabilities = Equity. I recommend you take as little as possible out of the company. It is designed to grow and take care of your needs. Think company first.  Many expenses are company expenses that as an individual you were paying personally. It is much easier for the company to pay for all business expenses. Your tax accountant can easily review and assign a percentage that may be personal. (This is better than the mad scramble of finding missing receipts at tax time). Contractors Favorite Job Costing Reports Job Profitability Reports are the easiest and most practical to track. Contractors can see job by job; did these jobs make a profit? From this report, you can drill down to more specifics about the job. Because of every small job, every remodel is different and knowing how much the plumber, the electrician, the framer charged is not always relevant.   It gets back to over tracking versus practical information you can see and process at a glance. Which jobs made money and which ones did not. Was it the material costs? What is the timing of the job? Time spent on the job? Lack of Signed Change Orders? Fuel costs have increased everywhere due to recent Hurricanes (if they didn’t work in your area – you are one of the lucky few). Estimating Many contractors are finding it is helpful in bidding the jobs to use a detailed estimating program. Some Estimating Programs link to industry-specific cost codebooks. Please Note: If your estimate is several pages long it is not practical to enter this type of estimate in QuickBooks line-by-line. QuickBooks can be set up to do many things. QuickBooks can have as much detail or as little detail as the user wants or needs. Can be used as an electronic checkbook to a real accounting program with reports. The object is to be able to see useful reports you can read and make decisions Making decisions and being adaptable happens every day when you are in business. There is no such thing as "free sex". This argument has been posed over and over: If you can afford to cake someone, male or female, then are you really "paying for it"? I feel like we all pay for sex in some way shape or form when we are kicking it with someone. Even if you don't leave the money on the nightstand when you done, if you pay for every date, or if you help out with a bill, you might as well just give the person cash in hand. Its the same thing to me. But if you don't have financial issues, if whatever you spend on a date or give a person really wont make a difference in your day to day living, then is it really tricking off? You see first you have to understand the definition of a TRICK: it is someone who pays a HOE for a sexual favor. So by definition MOST women will argue that if a man give them some money or pay for all the dates, he aint a trick. He is just a "good guy" or something, simply because they don't consider themselves a HOE. This is the quintessential part of the term "it aint tricking if you got it" that makes it a controversial statement. Women don't see it as HOEISH to go out on multiple dates or to get a dude to pay for an outfit or a bill if they screwing him. Thats just him "being a real man" lol. KILL YA SELF! So here are the questions: 1) IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO GO OUT AND SPEND MONEY ON A WOMAN OR MAN IN ORDER TO GET IN GOOD ENOUGH TO HAVE SEX WITH THEM, ARE YOU A TRICK? 2) IS IT HYPOCRITICAL OF PEOPLE NOT TO CALL A WOMAN A HOE THAT WONT SLEEP WITH A MAN UNLESS HE HAS SPENT MONEY ON HER? 3) HOW MUCH MONEY, OR WHAT IS THE THRESHOLD AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT YOU CAN SPEND ON A "DATE" BEFORE YOU CAN CALL IT TRICKING? 4) GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE OF TRICKING IN YOUR OPINION 5) HAVE YOU EVER BEEN A TRICK OR HAVE YOU EVER TRICKED SOMEONE OFF?
